Aureole's Journal - X

THE EXAM: HOUSE OF HORRORS (Y1 > Y2)

Each student ready to move from the first year to the second would find a nice, neatly printed letter taped to their door inviting them to participate in a "Non-Mandatory-But-Highly-Recommended-Anyway Test" (or NMBHRAT for short). A location was provided at the bottom of the note (a section of the grounds, just near the forest), and beneath that the words "Come at anytime."

Upon arrival, you would first notice that a peculiar house has been erected. It's not large enough to overshadow any of the dorms by any means; in fact, it seems rather tiny and shabby in comparison, with the door half stripped of its paint, the windows cracked and smeared with dust, and everything looks as though the merest touch will make it collapse.

At first you wonder if you're in the right place at all, but then you notice a little box sitting just outside of the house. Closer examination would reveal a note, written in a loopy handwriting perhaps familiar to some:

Welcome welcome to the House
Please be quiet as a mouse
The House will tell if you are good
The House will tell if you are bad

Think you're up to face the thing?
If you pass it, all will sing
Do your best, oh fair student
I hope your deaths you do circumvent

THE EXAM
THE HOUSE OF HORRORS

The smell is what gets your attention first; like smoke and old wood, it wafts across the air towards you, enticing you onward, pulling you forward, and you reach the little shabby house and the door half hanging off its hinges, practically begging you to come inside.

A sign posted outside reads "Welcome to the House."

At first, you're mildly concerned but upon knocking stepping inside, you realize that the house in question appears deserted.

Well, that's just creepy. But trying to go backwards only results in failure - the door has locked behind you. You're trapped inside, and now you must figure out how to get through the house in order to continue on your quest.

--------------------------------------------

TO GET THROUGH THE HOUSE:

There are THREE MAJOR ROOMS to the House of Horrors. In order to successfully pass through the House and receive your exam credit, you must navigate through all three rooms until you reach the exit, located after the very last room:

  • Cutthroat Kitchen

To get through the Cutthroat Kitchen, you need 10 steps. Roll 1d4 and add up the amount of steps you take (i.e. you roll a 3, that's 3 steps forward). You must get at least 10 steps. If you go over ten, that's fine, as long as it's at least 10.

Each number of steps rolled has it's own consequence:
1 - You open a door in the kitchen looking for the exit and promptly find yourself dunked by a bucket of icy water. Who left that there?
2 - You trip and fall into a vat of what looks like melted chocolate.
3 - You step in a pile of what looks like sticky glue on the floor and therefore get it stuck on the bottom of your foot/shoe for the rest of your trek through the House.
4 - For some reason, there is an entire bin of tiny bones that you somehow manage to knock over, which, of course, makes a terribly loud sound.

  • Lurking Library

In order to get through the Library, you'll have to find the right combination of books in order to find the combination. Roll 3d6, and follow the guidelines below:

      - 1,1 OR 2,2 as two of the numbers - Looks like you've found some sort of...oops better put that back quickly before a certain cranky Librarian sees you looking at por - (try again)
      - 3,3 OR 4,4 OR 5,5 OR 6,6 as two of the numbers - You pull out a book, and then another, and to your relief you see that the door beyond swings open for you to slip through! (success)
      - 1,2,3 (doesn't have to be in order) - Somehow you get entangled in what looks like a long rope made of paper and spend several moments trying to break your way free, when you notice that in the process you've actually fallen out the door into the next room. How convenient! (success)
      - 6,6,6 Is that a giant spi - quick run for it - (start back in the first room)
      - 1,1,1 You try climbing a bookshelf, rather than pull books trying to find the secret switch, and wind up tumbling over the side rather ungracefully. But hey, look, the...nope, just a shadow (try again)

  • Bloodcurdling Bedroom

The Bloodcurdling Bedroom requires only one thing - picking the lock successfully to get through the door on the other side. Roll 1d100. You must get above a 65 to have successfully picked the lock. If you roll below, then your attempts were unsuccessful and you have to keep on truckin'.

Upon their exit from the house, a certain mischievous Trick or Treater can be found lounging in a tree on the other side, looking as happy as a pig in mud. He smiles down at you, his grin terribly self-satisfied, and tosses you a rolled up piece of parchment. Opening it, you see a certificate of Exam Completion.

"Congratulations," he says brightly, and flashes you a wink. "You're now a Knob."

It had been hard in trying to keep her wing from fluttering so much in excitement.

It had been a reasonably short distance to her destination. And boy, was it glowing with just...! Aureole didn't know! She just knew that she wanted to explore it!... And possibly find anything she might be able to keep. For a souvenir, ya know?

This was the right place, right? She was sure she had followed the map rather well.

She couldn't hold back in scouting the exterior of the house for the first few moments. Like a moth to a flame.

It didn't look like anything super grand but it had this air about it. Like something not exactly right but not entirely wrong, either. It even felt old! She shook the chipped paint from her hand before returning herself to the entrance of the house.

For all her looking, she finally noticed a small box. After skimming the note, she pocketed it and headed in through the front door.

The first assault on her senses were the smells. Old and smoky... Like a long forgotten fire pit. That didn't exactly bode well but nothing seemed like it would catch fire...? She hoped so, at least. It appeared to be too late, anyhow, as she felt more than heard the door shut behind her.

She jumped a little but laughed it off as best she could. No one was around so her normal bravado was a little thinner than normal. She'd make it through this! Yeah... YEAH! She could do this!

And... Of course. What had her pride wrought her!

Upon entering the kitchen, the closest room in her sights, she managed to trip on something... And land herself into the largest tub of chocolate she had ever seen.

Her wings tried to flicker off as much of the gooey substance as possible to very little avail. She wiped her face just enough to peer down at herself. She looked like a hot mess... Literally.

She wasn't sure if she should clap out to whoever set that up or take notes. If this had been a clever prank... She wasn't about to miss the opportunity in learning this one!

But she decided on just taking a few mental notes. She needed to find her way out of here and into a shower now before her feathers crusted over.

She had managed to get enough of the sweet chocolate goop from her hooves to keep making her way through...

And then nearly jumped out of her feathers at the crescendo of noise from a bin her had managed to kick over.

Who...!? Who just leave something like this...? Now she was wondering if this was all some elaborate prank after all.

Either way, she shuffled several of the bones out of her way, trying her best to not cause anymore noise that she already had. While she could enjoy a good adventure or two, this was starting to get a little eerie, even for her.

And she had just gotten most of this stuff off!

After making the racket she had, she had walked herself backwards into ANOTHER vat of chocolate!

Who honestly needed two!? Her own estate back home didn't even have one! Aureole was clearly more confused than angry. Sure, chocolate was just chocolate. But what had her going was how someone could possibly have two of those immense tubs of melted sweets?

A loud gasp erupted from her as she swung herself out of the tub, bringing with her a large puddle of chocolate beneath her hooves and her wings twitching once again.

She was sure to be a sight when going back to her dorm.

FINALLY!

Aureole was already terrible at cooking, let alone seeming to have the worst sort of luck in a kitchen. Now that she had made it out of there, relatively unscathed, it was time for the next room!

Making her way towards the library, she found herself trying to wipe her hands off as best she could. Who knew who these books belonged to and, if anyone had tried to touch or handle her things with the sort of mess that seemed to stick to her she'd have been furious.

It seemed to be some kind of puzzle...? Shelves upon shelves of books were lined all around her and it seemed she was to find a specific combination to make her way out of the library.

This didn't look all too hard... At least, she hoped so.

And... As it seemed to be just her luck, the task at hand was proving to be a little more... challenging.

But no matter! It wasn't like she could just turn around at this point.

Aureole's face scrunched as she kept having to wipe her hands off before reaching for another book. The chocolate was starting to solidify which would make it all the easier to chip off but it was making it a little harder on her to try and not smudge it on any of the books.

The shelves were, honestly, a lost cause at this point.

A few more books and her doe-like ears pricked up to the sound of something shuffling open...

A door!

"Hah!" She smirked before whisking herself over and through the door.

She had completely another trial!

Now!

Another door... But locked. The Peryton gave herself a few moments to examine the door for any trickery she knew she would have put on it. So far, nothing. While still keeping a little skeptical air about her, she reached up into her hair and drew out one of the many spooky pins keeping the branch in her hair secured and began to pick at the lock.

Geez!

She withdrew the pin for a moment. She was nearly sure she had nearly broke it! The loud scrape had been an easy enough sign to 'chill' on her end. But was she ready to leave.

She wanted this chocolate out of her hair and for that eerie sense to leave her spine.

Okay... Time to take it a little softer this time.

She had nearly had it! She could feel it!

Her tongue stuck out and she smirked a little at the blooming taste of chocolate hitting it.

'Least the sugar delicate still coating much of her face had some use.

Now that she thought about it...

She drew out the pin once again, stuck it into some of the chocolate and tried once again.

Aureole was willing to try anything at this point. She could feel much of the chocolate crusting her the thin fur of her legs and that was going to be a pain to try and clean up later.

Welp, that was a mistake.

She sighed as she reached up into her hair to pull out another pin to dislodge the one that broke in the lock and proceed to try and get herself out of this place!

She lightly bumped her forehead against the door several times before getting herself back to picking the lock.

She was starting to get a little peeved at the lock. The pin was either slipping out of place or full-on breaking!

A few deep-breathes had her back to concentrating. She was sure her father would have been proud but that only served to churn her closer to a souring mood.

A raging shout echoed out with a following 'THUD' and groan.

Okay so punching the door didn't exactly work... Back to picking... Now with a sore hand.
