Fidgeting about in a haze of barely contained glee, Esfir surveyed the big, blue glazed bowl that her momma had allowed her to use to hold the popcorn that she'd been allowed (under heavy supervision) to make. And from where she stood, with the top of her head just above the counter-top, the near overflowing bowl was a beautiful thing. A quick glance at her watch told the girl that it was almost time.
Moving carefully, Esfir reached up and ever-so-carefully took the bowl of popcorn from where it rested and carried it to the coffee table in the living room. Once she had it settled just so, she blew out a dramatically relieved sigh. Now, she just had to get the other thing she needed for the night to be perfect.
"Big sis," she called in a fluting warble. "Big sis! It's time and you promised to watch the Steven Bomb with me! And I made so much popcorn for us."
Throwing herself onto the couch, Esfir perched on her knees, with her arms draped over the back of the couch, watching and waiting for Kat to hurry up and come out.

It wasn’t often that Kat went back home. She preferred to stay in her own apartment, doing her own thing…but Esfir had a way of wrapping her around one of her cute little fingers and Kat wasn’t able to say no. She never really had been.
So, with a sigh the woman walked into the living room and sank onto the couch next to her younger sister, flopping an arm over the young girl’s shoulders and gently tugging on one of her braids. “You are obsessed. Too much television is not good.”
Kat did reach over and pluck a handful of popcorn, dropping a few pieces on her sister and giving a mischievous smile. “Oops.” She loved Esfir more than she cared to admit…it was easy to adore the girl though, she was so happy and full of life all the time…it was wonderful.

"But this is good television," Esfir protested, allowing Kat to tug at her braid. Less well recieved was the dropped popcorn. Kat knew how much Momma hated messes. Still, her big sis was here and watching the best cartoon ever with her. She'd let the popcorn thing slide.
Instead, she quickly curled into her sister's side and seized her own handful of popcorn to munch on.
"I wish you came by more, big sis," she murmured quietly, wishing that she could keep her sister home forever.

Kat’s arm curled around Esfir again and she held the younger girl close, still not really understanding why the child was so utterly enamored with this show. Though, so far as television went, this wasn’t the worst thing on…just Kat had better and more important things to do than to sit and watch cartoons…at least when watching cartoons didn’t involve her youngest sister.
Quietly though she took another few pieces of popcorn, eating these more carefully. “…I enjoy being alone, Esfir.” Her voice was soft. She didn’t want to interrupt the show that was beginning, the colorful characters being slowly introduced with a catchy theme song.
“I do not consider this place to be home. You know that. You are my favorite part of here. You are the reason I return.”

Maybe Esfir knew that, but she sure didn't understand it. Home was where she and Momma were. And didn't Kat ever come home to see Momma? It didn't sound that way. And that made Esfir feel a heavy lump of sadness in her chest. Still, she remained quiet and merely giving a confused half-nod as a sign that she was listening.
If she was the only reason Kat came back, what did that really mean? Didn't Kat love Momma?
It was all way too confusing. And it made her want to cry.
A few tear leaked out, though Esfir was careful to turn her face away and scrape it against her sleeve. Then, wordlessly, she burrowed into her sister's side like a tiny, heartbroken puppy and tried to focus on her cartoon.

Kat glanced down at her sister, frowning slightly. She didn’t want to upset the child…but this whole country was not her home. She hated it. Hated that she had been forced to move here. But…that wasn’t Esfir’s fault. Or Irina’s, honestly.
Quietly she drew the child closer and bent down, placing a kiss atop her soft hair.
“Don’t cry. I am not mad at mother. I just do not like this place. Any of it. This is not my home.”
She felt bad. Unhappy that she had made her favorite sister cry. Unhappy that she had ruined this special night that the girl had planned.
“Come, Esfir.” Kat playfully tickled her for a moment, then picked the girl up and set her in her lap, wrapping her arms around the child. “Let us not think of these things. Our show is on! You have wanted this for months!”
Gently, she rested her chin on Esfir’s shoulder, eyes on the television screen.
Children were easily distracted, and she only hoped that this would be enough for her sister.
