Tarot's face was set in its usual blank expression, but inwardly she was sighing. She hated when a class did group projects. Honestly she preferred to most things by herself, it was easier. There wasn't going to be any getting out of it either, since the groups had to discuss their project together to prove their various involvements. Wonderful.

Tarot sat and listened while the teacher called out names and paired people up. Finally Tarot's name was called. She was to be partnered with Artemus. It was a mark of how little she knew about the class that Tarot had no idea who Artemus was until the teacher pointed them out. Tarot half-turned in her seat to eyeball the bright pink Sluagh.

This was going to be interesting...

Artemus listened carefully as the teacher gave them instructions for their group project. They weren't feeling particularly enthusiastic about it, but maybe they would get lucky and get paired with someone smart. Intelligent people seemed to have a drive to get their work done soonest, so that would mean less uncomfortable attempts at conversing. Artemus had always been one of few words.

The teacher called out their name, then pointed to a little pale Litch in a dark red sweater with a bell necklace, telling Artemus they would pair with Tarot. Artemus noticed Tarot eyeing them, and eyed them back. They knew a little about Tarot. Quiet, seemed to get good marks. Hard worker, but about as conversant as Artemus was.

This was going to be interesting...

Once the teacher was finished pairing off the class they instructed everyone to get together with their partners and start discussing what they were going to do for their project. With another internal sigh Tarot gathered her books and headed for Artemus' desk, which had a lot more free space than hers did at the moment since it seemed most people were forming pairs in her corner. Annoying of them...

Tarot set her stuff down on the desk, pulled a chair up, sat, then twiddled her thumbs. Okay, what now? She gave Artemus a very blank look. The pair sat in silence, neither seemingly willing to break it. It made Tarot seriously question the intelligence of the teacher. Why in Below would you put the two mostly mute students together?

Artemus was the first to "crack". They opened their history book to the table of contents, then turned to look at Tarot expectantly.

"....Which sounds most interesting," Artemus asked in their soft yet husky voice. Most people were under the impression that the Sluagh was mute, but really they just never had much to say. But if the pair was just going to sit there, it was apparently up to them to make the first move. Picking a topic seemed to be a good place to start. Thankfully Artemus found the entire history book equal, so had no preferences to which chapter Tarot wanted to work on.

They examined the Litch while she looked over the page. Like Artemus and their race, Litchs had dark sclera. Tarot was no exception, her eyes a deep black to Artemus' dark red. Her iris' were a dark blue and probably blended with the black if viewed from far enough away, though since Artemus was close the color seemed vivid. She had short, straight black hair, parted neatly. Her skirt matched her eyes, and Artemus had already noted the necklace and sweater. All the dark colors only made Tarot's pale skin seem paler, though Artemus noted some subtle stripping patterns that had been invisible before. They'd heard about the rot curse that afflicted several Litches, but if Tarot had such a thing it wasn't obvious to Artemus' eyes.

Tarot looked over the chapter, feeling eyes on her the entire time. She ignored them. She got stared at a lot for being kind of weird, so it wasn't anything new. 'Not like they can say anything about me anyway,' she couldn't help thinking as her eyes subtly flicked up to look at Artemus again. Sluagh were so strange-looking, though she still hadn't seen very many of them up close. If Artemus was a fair example of their race, their eyes were similarly dark like Litch eyes and their ears reminded her of Goblins. And those hands! She couldn't imagine any kind of delicate work being done by hands bigger than their face, though Artemus' hands weren't quite that large.

Yet.

"This looks good," she said, pointing to a section in the book about Graven Frostfyre. It was a topic she knew well enough that she shouldn't have any problem carrying the project if Artemus turned out to be lazy.

Artemus nodded. "I will reread the chapter to refresh my memory. A moment please." They flipped through their book to the section and read a bit of backstory on Litches and their settling of the North, the displacement of the Imps due to warn with the Demons, and the gifting of Litch territory to the Imps. It was interesting, and more to the point since it was more of an event than a place they could put this project on a poster board and not have to build a model, like the teacher suggested to the students who wanted to take about historical items over places or events.

"Do you have ideas for the layout," Artemus asked to be polite. Ideas were already swirling around in their head, but since this was a group project they were going to have to collaborate. Artemus found themselves hoping, though, that there was a way to do this to make their participate evident without having to speak in front of the class. They could if they had to, they just would prefer not to.

Tarot sat back and watched Artemus read for a bit, then pulled out a piece of paper and began writing down ideas. So when Artemus finished reading (earlier than Tarot had expected) and asked their question, Tarot was ready with an answer.

"I was thinking we should focus on-," she launched into her answer, pulling the piece of paper she'd been working on closer so Artemus could see it and explaining her thought process. She wanted to go at the project from a certain angle so that it focused more on particular aspects, to keep it from becoming too big and broad. Her voice was it's usual flat, bored tone, and she spent most of her time watching Artemus to make sure the Sluagh was keeping up. If Artemus knew they were being watched they didn't show much indication or concern, watching the paper and the ideas Tarot wrote out with an expression that was as devoid of thoughts or emotions as Tarot's voice. For a moment it almost amused Tarot, then she pulled her mind back to the work at hand.

Heh, hand.

"That sound good to you," she asked, finished with her explanation.

Artemus looked up to stare at Tarot, then nodded their head. They were actually impressed by Tarot's organizational skills. Of course, objectively speaking, they knew that Tarot much be a good student just from observation in the classes they had together. But it was one thing to know and another to know. It was a relief that they were going to be able to get this project done in about the amount of time Artemus had been hoping for.

"I can ask my mother for poster board to work on the project. I can ask if you can come over tomorrow, and we can work on creating the board and combining our areas of research," Artemus offered. They doubted Arabelle would have a problem with Artemus having a school mate over, especially if it was class-related, and Artemus knew there were plenty of supplies and books stashed around the apartment that they could use. They weren't sure how Tarot's living situation was, but they were sure that theirs was plenty satisfactory enough.

Tarot thought it over for a moment, but it was mostly for show. She know her mom would have absolutely no problem with her going over to a fellow student's house to do homework together, as long as she asked permission first. Okay, maybe she would have a problem if she thought the home was unsafe or something like that, but still Tarot didn't foresee any problems. So-

"That's fine," she said, relieved that they had a plan of action that should be quick and simple to execute with a minimum of social interaction between the two. In fact, she was ready to start now. She pulled her own book towards her, opened it to the appropriate chapter, and even though she already knew plenty enough to start writing her half of the project at this exact moment, began to read. She supposed Artemus was alright, intelligent enough to do their work and silent enough not to pester Tarot with their chatter.

She still would have preferred to work alone. Oh well, perhaps she'd get lucky and this would be the last group project for a long, long time.

Artemus could see that Tarot considered their discussion finished. Well, that suited them just fine. They'd rather get to reading and working on the project than engage in pointless chitchat, as it seemed half of the class was doing. Artemus' large ears swiveled around, listening for a moment, then they resolutely put their focus back towards their history book. They'd already skimmed through the chapter once, so they dug into their desk for a notebook and pencil and spent the rest of the class taking notes out of the book on the key points they would need for their half of the project.

Hopefully they could get all this finished up tomorrow, so it was one less thing to have to think about. And, hopefully, if there were any more group projects in the future, the teacher would keep Artemus paired with Tarot. It was a nice change, working with someone who didn't have much to say and still got a great deal done.
