Physical description: A life on the streets has left Matthias with a slim build of muscle over bone. With little to no fat on his body, the wiry used to be mistaken for being a scrawny weakling, but he has since grown into his frame, and now looks lean and muscular. A well kept head of silver hair hangs down to just below his ears, with a side part that gives him a suave, sophisticated look, and accents his blue eyes well.
Most often seen dressed in his limited edition umbreon jacket, Matthias does make an effort to look neat and clean as well. He generally wears a slim fitting pair of black slacks, a red polo shirt, and a black, silver trimmed vest with only one button done up. He borrowed the look from his adoptive father after years of living in rags on the streets. The clothing hides most of the scars Matthias picked up during those years, however the scars crossing his left eyebrow, and just below his left eye are always visible, a testament to his never-give-up attitude that had earned him those wounds.

Goal:To follow in the footsteps of his adoptive father, becoming a dark type Pokemon specialist, and eventually take over the Goldenrod City Gym.
Motivation: Having grown up on the streets, Matthias never wants to have to return to that life. More than that however, he wants to prove that he deserves all of the love, devotion, and care his adoptive father gave him.

Sleight of hand - Matthias loves learning new card tricks, and always keeps a deck on hand to practice, and to impress people on the road. He also keeps his pick-pocketing skills sharp… just in case…
Cooking – While he isn’t all that great yet, Matthias loves to learn new recipes and techniques to feed himself and his friends. Well, if he ever makes any that is.

Personality: Growing up with a lot of other kids depending on him has given Matthias a strong sense of responsibility, and a caring heart, but also a larger than normal dose of cynicism. He will never let anyone go hungry and is always the first to lend a helping hand, but he also is the first to question how the world can let bad situations go unattended in the first place. Matthias got up to a lot of less-than-legal activities to take care of his gang, and to this day he does not regret it. Growing up on the streets left him with a somewhat loose set of morals. He feels that so long as n one gets hurt, the ends often justify the means.
A little withdrawn around new people, Matthias often prefers to keep to himself when he isn’t performing or helping someone out. He uses several emotional masks to keep people safely at arms length, and so far, only his adoptive father has ever really gotten him to break out of his shell.

- Street fighting - Though he has no formal training, a life on the streets teaches you how to hold your own pretty quickly.
Family: Matthias has no memory of a time when he wasn’t living on the streets. Aside from a vague scent of lavender and cigars, he recalls nothing of his parents. With any legal records lost or impossible to find, he has no way of knowing who his blood relatives might be.
In Goldenrod City, his gang was his family. All of the kids were younger than him and looked to him as an older brother. Even though the old gang had been taken to a fine orphanage, and some of them had even found new homes, the still called him ‘big bro’ right until the end.
His only real family now is his adoptive father Martin Valeran, the Goldenrod City gym leader. Martin was the man who took Matthias and his gang off the streets. Apparently, Martin saw the makings of greatness in young Matthias and offered to give him a home instead of taking him to the orphanage. Matthias feels he owes Martin a great debt and will do anything to make his father proud.
Hometown: Goldenrod City - Johto region
Biography: Matthias' earliest memories are of the slums of Goldenrod city. He grew up there, a homeless orphan, often going hungry for days on end. It wasn't until he discovered he had a talent for sleight of hand that he finally started to get ahead in life. Starting off as a simple street performer, he did magic tricks and juggling acts to earn enough money to feed himself each day. Not long after he started performing, he noticed a lot of other kids following him, watching him with hungry eyes. They reminded him so much of himself that he couldn't help but share his food with them. Over time, more and more kids began to depend on him for even a slice of bread each day. It got harder and harder to keep track of them all, let alone feed them.
After a while, Matthias decided that they needed to find a sanctuary. Taking refuge in an old, abandoned warehouse, the group of children were at least able to have a roof over their heads, and running water, even if it was only cold. Matthias began to teach the oldest of the kids what he knew of performing and worked with others on how to keep their new home clean and secure.
It didn’t take long for some of the local Pokémon to take notice of the group of kids, and some of them wandered into the area much to the delight of all the children. With the Pokémon helping them, their lives improved considerably. Fire types provided hot water and cooked meals, while bug types were able to make hammocks, and the normal and flying types helped make little nests or find odds and ends. One Pokémon in particular bonded with Matthias, a small Nikit who had a knack for finding discarded coins and telling where to find bits of discarded food.
Despite the improvement the Pokémon brought, there was still the issue of feeding the ever-growing group of Pokémon and children. Matthias was at his wits end when a pair of teenage thugs wandered into the warehouse. The pair wanted to claim the building as a base for their gang, but Matthias refused to budge. The pair ganged up on him, pummelling him with their fists, but he refused to back down. Nikit was the first to jump in to help him, biting down hard on the hand of one of the thugs. When the thugs flung Nikit towards a wall, Matthias charged forward to save it, catching the fox Pokémon in the nick of time. This finally encouraged the other kids to act, throwing sticks, rocks, and anything else they could find at the bullies. The Pokémon in their care helped out too, despite being so neglected and weak they could barely make a mark. Still it was enough to drive off the thugs, and secure the warehouse as theirs.
After the incident, Matthias still had the issue of feeding all those kids. He tried to go to the local police for help, but was turned away and told to go home to his parents. With no other option, Matthias took his sleight of hand skills and turned to petty theft. He tried to only steal from those who could afford it, something the cities casino made relatively easy. Wait for some sucker to win a big jackpot, then swipe a bit of it as they walked out. Soon enough he was able to buy food for all the kids and tend to all the neglected and mistreated Pokèmon they found. Life was still a constant battle to keep his family safe and happy, but he was getting better and better at winning.
Then one day, it all went sideways, Martin Valeran, the current gym leader of the town won a massive jackpot at the casino, but Matthias had judged his mark poorly. He, just like everyone else in the building had assumed the man was drunk, but this was not the case. it had been an act to bluff people at the poker table. The gym leader caught Matthias by the arm and was about to berate him, but he hesitated. Martin took a good look at the young boy dressed in ragged clothing, far to skinny to be eating right and gave him a look of sympathy. Matthias took that moment as an opportunity to slip out of the mans grip and take off, but he wasn’t quick enough. Martin had one of his Pokémon follow the boy, and soon discovered the rest of the children.
A few days later, as Matthias was getting ready to head out for another day of thieving, there was a pounding on the warehouse doors. A group of adults in suits were there, claiming to be there to help them all and find them homes. Matthias was suspicious at first, no adult had ever helped them before, but they showed up with new clothes, toys, and more food than any of the kids had laid eyes on. Matthias, being 14 at the time was simply shocked. Why did the adults suddenly care when they had never seemed to before? Then in the background he spotted Martin. Almost feeling drawn in, Matthias walked over and asked why, why help them. Martin explained that when he saw how Matthias was caring for this group of kids, he had used the money he won to fund a local orphanage so that they would be able to care for all the orphans in the city, as well as notifying nurse joy about the neglected Pokèmon and helping establish a care system for them.
It was then that Martin offered Matthias a choice, he could go to the orphanage with the rest of the kids, or come and live with the gym leader. Martin told Matthias he saw something in him that he hadn’t seen in a long time and offered to take the boy under his wing. Matthias felt something from this man that he had never felt before… admiration. He took him up of the offer, and soon he and Nikit were undergoing schooling and training under the care of Martin. As it turned out, Martin was a specialist in dark types, and taught Matthias everything he knew. It wasn’t until a year had passed that Martin gave Matthias another surprise, he adopted him, giving the boy a permanent home. At 16 Matthias asked if he could embark on his own journey, to find a place and a purpose in the world that was all his own.
On the advice of his mentor-turned-father, Matthias ventured to the Kimchi region, a place where he could put his troubled past behind him and look to a brighter future. Vowing to become a Dark-type specialist and make his new father proud, he received two gifts from Martin as he left. The first was an egg, born from Martin's very on Umbreon. Umbreon was Martin’s ace Pokémon, who had been with him since the gym leader was a young trainer himself., so Martin wanted Matthias to have a chance to raise on of his own. The other was a limited edition jacket that matched the one Martin himself wore.
With a few tears shed, but a warm feeling in his chest, Matthias boarded the ship to the Kimchi region, his trusty Nikit by his side. The young man had been given a whole new start on life, and he sure as hell wasn’t going to waste it.
