Cider loved the chance to get out of the Academy and see her mother, even though she did like school…but she liked her family too…maybe more than school. Always more than school. Today was one of those great days when she got to spend time with Pear, and those days were becoming all too rare, so she cherished them, and ran over, hugging her mother and looking up at her, grinning, the smile shy, but large enough that her feelings were clear. “Hi. I’m glad to see you!”
Even though she had Ale and Chamomile here at the academy…sometimes Cider still felt so lonely, and it was good to go and see her mom again, even if it wasn’t for very long.
“I…I’m doing good in my classes!”

Tiny wings fluttering with excitement, Pear scooped Cider up after the initial hug and beamed down at her little daughter. Then, with a smile, she gently booped her fingertip against Cider's nose.
"Hello, little love! I'm very glad to see you too and I'm very proud of you," she said sunnily. "I hope your sibs are being as good as you! What class do you like best so far?"
For a moment, the hybrid felt a pang as she realized how big Cider was compared to when she'd first been enrolled in the Academy. Her babies were all growing up so fast!

When her mother booped her nose, Cider erupted into giggles, her normally reserved expression giving way to a huge smile that was now devoid of any shyness. “My favorite class? Um!” She had to think, growing quiet and mentally going through all of the classes she had been doing. “I think I really like Language Arts the best because you don’t really have to get up and talk in front of people much…I don’t like getting up and talking to people.” She swallowed and gave a small shrug. “I like people though...but...but I hate math class! That’s the worst ever...all of the numbers get all mixed up and I get so confused sometimes, mom.” Cider reached out and took one of the hybrid’s hands. “What subjects did you like best in school mom?” It was always such a treat to learn more about her mother, even if it was something as simple as this.

Laughing delightedly, accepted her small daughter's hand as they continued their walk.
"Oh," she said breezily, "Language Arts was my favorite too! Only my teacher was an old grump, not a lovely demon like Miss Lyra. And don't worry, little love of mine," Pear gave Cider's hand a gentle squeeze. "I was the worst at Math too. Numbers and I have never been friends."
Sighing softly, the hybrid thought wistfully of her days at the Academy before shaking off her momentary gloom. She'd graduated and gone on to the University and graduated that. She was a poet now! And she was happy and had her own little family. So clearly she was doing something right!
"You have such good teachers, I'm sure they'd be willing to work with you if you need help in your classes. And don't forget, you have Ale and Chamomile and Cinnamel to help when I can't."
Glancing down, he gave Cider a reassuring smile and a wink.
"Now, how does ice cream sound?"

Cider was practically glowing as Pear talked about her old classes…and the fact she didn’t like Math either! It made her feel a whole lot better to know that her mother was a lot like she was…or…or she was a lot like her mother had been! The small hybrid gripped her mother’s hand as they walked, growing more and more buoyant as they made their way along.
“I know, mom. I know I have lots of people to help me…but I just…I just don’t wanna talk in front of people, that’s all…I’d rather just…read…and listen. It’s easier that way, I think…I can’t mess up and say the wrong thing if I don’t talk, right?”
Maybe…that wasn’t the best way to look at things…but when her mother offered ice cream…well.
All bets were off then. “Yes! Yes I want ice cream! That sounds wonderful!” Spending time with her mother was just the best thing ever.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Cider's fear of interacting with others was something that she was going to have to address if she wanted to be a good mother. Come to think of it, Cinnamel had been equally shy. The little geist was just better than most at the whole Fake It Till U Make It nonsense.
"Sometimes, little daughter. But just remember if you remain silent and never speak up, some people will take that as weakness or that you don't care. They will find ways to use your silence against you to hurt you and other people," Pear paused and veered slightly to take them by the ice cream shop. "I know Ale knows you're shy and she's happy to stand between you and the world, but talk to Cinnamel too. Sometimes, I think your adopted sister's anxiety is worse than yours. Though it's eased up ever so much since you and your sibs came into the picture. And she'd do anything for you too."
Well, that was more than enough lecturing. Cider was a smart little thing. She'd understand what Pear was trying to tell her.
"I think I might get a bubblegum sundae. What sounds good to you, daughter of mine?"

Well…maybe the talk of ice cream hadn’t come quite soon enough…but her mother didn’t seem mad at her…she just wanted her to talk more. Cider listened quietly, some of her jubilation fading just slightly as her mother’s words sunk in. She supposed that Pear had a point…there were things that could be misheard from silence…people could think she was mean or rude or just…just didn’t care…
“I’ll talk to Cinnamel…I’ll see if maybe her and I can be better friends and yeah I know Ale is the best ever…sometimes though…” She hesitated and looked at her mom rather sheepishly. “Sometimes I think about sending Ale in to do my presentations…but I haven’t done that yet…but I think about it…and I want a bubblegum sundae too…that sounds really, really yummy!”
She wasn’t good at keeping secrets, and if her mom was disappointed in her…at least her mom knew what was going on…and that mattered more than anything. “I love you!”

"That's my good girl," Pear said, approval rich in her voice. Then, as she listened to Cider's confession, she had to laugh. "Well, if you do, just make sure the teacher has a sense of humor. No point in risking a detention over a harmless bit of fun."
In point of fact, the idea of her twin babies pulling such a joke was a source of delight for the hybrid. Pear found herself rather hoping that Cider would do it, if only to help her break a little further out of her shell. But all of this conjecture was secondary to the idea of bubblegum sundaes.
"Oh, they're the best! Sweet and just a tiny bit gooey. I'm sure you'll love it."
Then, pausing long enough to scoop Cider up onto her shoulders, Pear grinned and said, "I love you too, sweetiebear!"

Cider let out a squeal of delight as her mother scooped her up onto her shoulders. “Well…Maybe Ale and I can swap during a class one time…I think I’ll talk to her about it…but we’re not going to tell you mom! We…oh…I guess I just told you…well…well…!”
She huffed and rested her head atop her mothers, holding on with her small hands. “We can go get the sundaes now, right? We can talk about the…the ‘me not talking’ stuff later…” The hybrid let out a nervous sort of giggle at the irony of it, the fact that she didn’t want to talk about not talking…it was kind of funny.
“I think the sundae sounds like the best thing ever. Next to you, of course.”

Laughign along with Cider, Pear gently tweaked ne of Cider's feet.
"Ah, but you haven't told me where or when! We'll let that part be a surprise, hrmm? And of course we can talk about it later. Whenever you'd like and you feel comfortable with it."
Above all, Pear was not going to bully her child into talking to her.
"Oh, I happen to think the sundaes are even better than me. Not better than you though. You and your sibs are the absolute best things in my life."
After a little more walking, Pear spied the ice cream stand and pointed it out to Cider.
"Get ready for the best sundae ever, sweetness!"
