Melvin stood on the beach, calm yet excited inwardly at what was planned. Usually he'd be more cautious about an area still undocumented and new, but the journey was the real test anyways.

Pulling up the wetsuit, he adjusted the fit around his body and wrists before turning. "I'm really proud of you doing this."

He moved to Lawr but paused. "Is it okay to help you into the wetsuit?" Given the new rules, he wasn't sure.

Dread wasn't something Lawr usually experienced, so when he did it was equal parts novel and unpleasant. He didn't want to swim but he did want to see Atlantis. There were any number of riches down there and it would be wasteful to miss out on it all so greed outweighed concern and in the end he decided to give it a shot, trusting Melvin to get him down there somehow.

Nodding to the question Lawr looked to Melvin, decidedly pale even for him. "I think you are fine, I can't think of anything less sexy than this. I feel like I am never going to get aroused ever again." Nothing had the effect of a splash of cold water quite like the threat of a lot of cold water he'd have to be under.

He did however find himself concerned that this attire did nothing much to conceal how thin he was getting again but quickly set that sternly aside in favour of the fact that even if Melvin asked him, he no longer owed him any answers.

He moved to work the wetsuit, letting him step inside before rolling the black material up his legs and body, finding little need to tug too much to get it in place and zip him in.

He could tell he was thinner, which meant he was lying again. "That was easy." He said suspiciously before grabbing the gear. "Funny how this water turns you off but the water back home gets you back. I Isuppose timid waters are more your thing but don't worry. I do this run constantly."

He placed the helmet on Lawr and locked it ibto place and placed his own on. "You here me on the headset okay?"

With a thumbs up, he then lifted the oxygen tank and locked it in Lawr's back, turning it to start filtering in air. Doing the same for himself, he held his hand out. "Once we get up to our chest, you can hold onto me as I go down."

The fear slithered into his guts like a living creature as the helmet was placed on. It was fascinating and he found himself analysing the very primal response of his body to the situation as if he was outside of himself. There was a cold that seemed to take hold of his extremities, his hands and feet and he shivered even in the wetsuit.

"I can hear you." he said, his voice oddly small and tinny through the headset.

Taking Melvin's hand he clenched his teeth tight, squeezing tightly as he moved close to him. For once in his life he didn't know if he could do something and that thought alone was like spreading fractures across the surface of underfoot ice.

The tide rushed about their feet as the wet sank moved around them. "Just remember to breathe, okay."

He lead him slowly into the water before it rose up and kept his back to the tide to break it as they moved. Once deep enough, he turned and placed the hand he was holding to his neck. "You can hold on as tightly as you want, just don't let Butch pull my oxygen tube or cut into the seal of my helmet. If you feel yourself slipping, I'll stop and help you readjust. If we don't get far enough down and you want back on the shore, I'll take you there. I'm gonna dive now. Just breathe and if you feel inclined, you can kick your feet to help but don't feel like you need to if you feel overwelmed. Talk to me so I know you are okay. I'm going now."

He made sure Lawr was secure before he broke into the tide. There was a moment where the surface pulled across them before they were safely under and Melvin started their descent down."

Once they got into the water, all poise and control slipped away from Lawrence in an instinctual way he might have considered humiliating if they hadn't been completely alone. He wrapped himself around the other man, summoning his claws in a basic act of survival, burying his head against him.

He couldn't look, he couldn't pay attention to any of it, he found himself as they slipped under the water suddenly rendered a child again, clinging to safety in a blind and helpless way.

"I'm.. I'm." and he couldn't understand why it was so diifficult to talk or why his teeth wanted to chatter in the adrenaline soaked chill. "Please don't let it take long."

In his head Butch responded to his master's uncertainty and racing pulse the only way he knew how, with a low, terrified and keening whine.

"I'm not ok." he said. "But don't stop."

He took long strides, Lawr's weight feeling like nothing but the added tank making movement awkward and more taxing. If he didn't five regularly, he might nit have felt up to the challenge. It was strange to see Lawr so terrified and for that it made him something more grounded to the rest of them. Lawr could regularly accept death, could make deals about murder to creatures of death, and yet he was left tiny in the face of something Melvin felt was comforting.

The currents ebbs away from them as he descended but he did stop. "Hold on one second. Mermaids are patrolling. I didn't want to fight this way so we'll let it pass."

He wondered if they knew Atlantis had been found or even cared. His focus remained on the creature as it swam to another cave, patting Lawr's arm and claw before he then resumed his dive.

The place went darker as they entered the tunnel and Melvin turned on his helmet's lights as he traversed down the tunnel to the large door that started to faintly glow as they approached.

Lawrence just held on, oddly fixed and unmoving, the cold feeling like it wrapped around him until the only warmth he had was in his ribs, the only light in this deep and pressing darkness housed in his ribs. It was horrible and any moment he knew the air could stop and he'd die, trapped down here in the pressing darkness.

When Butch was desummoned he didn't even notice, just adjusted his grip and seemed to stay somewhere far away, somewhere beyond even flailing panic, the limp and distant acceptance of a creature in the arms of a predator, unable to do anything about the primal fears built in and hard wired to his brain.

The doors opened, and Melvin moved through the cavern portal up towards the distant blue light. It didn't take long before water rushed past as he broke the surface. "We're here." He said, turning to help boost Lawr up onto the platform of the cave that lead into Atlantis. "Through those doors. You can take off your helmet and flippers and just leave them here.

He hoisted himself up and turned, moving to start taking off his gear.

The faint blue glow came over to them, and he turned over his shoulder to smile. "Hello Sophie."

The golden mermaid guide floated there, hovering as babel moved around her.

"Sophie, this is Lawr. He is visiting as well."

Lawrence had never been so glad to feel the ground, very hurriedly getting himself out of the water, where he stood just collecting himself for a time on the dry ground, shivering bodily. He tried not to think of the deep impassable water above him, able to crash in at any time and failed.

He did as he was asked, removing his flippers and helmet, leaving them behind on the shoreline and following Melvin. It was difficult to focus on anything after the degree of trauma he felt he'd experienced but the strange mermaid guide was enough to at least pull him into a state where he could talk.

"Is it a golem?" he asked.

"Hello, Traveler of the way." She said, addressing Lawr. "I am Helpful Guiding Servant Created by Thirdmost Master Smith, Jin Gerret S'onac. I am - " A serious of words started to overlap into a jumble, but the words golem and robot could he beard.

Melvin smiled at her. "I call her Sophie for short." He told Lawr, moving over once his gear was off to kneel down beside him and rub his back. "Are you okay? I hate to rush you, but between the two of us, we have limited power to keep Atlantis operating before it goes dark. I don't want you to have braved coming all this way for no reward. Here." He offered his hand to help Lawr up. "You can lean on me.....unless you want a piggy back ride." He said with a grin.

"I welcome you once more. If I can be of any assistance, do not hesitate to address your concerns to me." Sophie said, the small, golden fish moving about her.

"We are visiting but thank you." Melvin addressed the golem before looking back to Lawr. "A much more advanced golem than we have back above. She said there were more of them but they don't have enough power to all operate."

The longer he was away from the edge of the water and the memory of how horrible it was the more he relaxed. The reassuring contact helped him too. He seemed to compose himself. "It's fine. No piggybacks required." he said calmly, his eyes on their strange guide.

He sauntered over to lean on the wall with his good hand, one leg crossed over the other.

"So, whatever your name is. Sophie. Servant. What is of value down here? Is there gold? Is there rare jewels. Monetary value, I could care less about cultural."

Melvin took two fingers and pinched the bridge of his nose under his glasses as he breathed out.

"Lawr. I thought you wanted to see Atlantis. Not pawn it. You know what happened to that one girl on Twitter."
PostPosted: Fri May 12, 2017 9:54 pm

There is a pause, and then Sophie answered, "To separate an item from culture is to destroy its given value. What is in your head, what Babel can access, is not here in such forms as you desire."

Lawrence looked wholly unimpressed at the creature's comments, not believing for a moment that an ancient forgotten city didn't have things to steal. He wasn't having any of Melvin's lectures either, he wasn't the girl from twitter, he wouldn't just grab things willy nilly, he'd be careful about it.

"It says it can read my mind and yet says there's nothing of value here. Methinks the fish is hiding something. That or completely missing what value is. There has to be things down here to alleviate my debt, we just need to find them. With or without the servant's help."
