Virell did not need more makeup. He had boxes of it at his house—more than he knew what to do with, and more than he could probably ever use.
But he also had a giftcard, and some really good coupons, so here he was, basket slung over one arm and standing on one foot as he tapped the toe of his other foot thoughtfully on the shiny tile floor of the makeup store he was visiting. He was certainly dressed the part for someone who had been standing in front of the makeup section for ten minutes already.
Today had been a work day but this was his last stop before heading home and he figured—why not? New things made him happy and right now he needed a pick-me-up. And also disgusting, greasy, unhealthy fast food, and a large coffee so he could go home and get started on the next chapter for class.

Just because Lavender’s blog posts had slowed and she hadn’t uploaded anything new to her youtube channel in a few months didn’t mean she had stopped being interested in makeup. She was just...in a funk. That was all. She would get out of it, she knew she would get out of it...but just maybe she wouldn't get out of it today, but then again...she was at the best makeup store in town so...maybe she would.
She already had a basket half full of new products--mostly things with ample amounts of glitter. Walking behind a pretty looking blonde male Lavender moved beside him, staring at the products he was looking at. “Find anything fun? I know they have some great coupons out for this brand...I like it, but sometimes it doesn’t stay on as long as it promises it will, that’s about the only flaw I’ve seen, but they have the best lip stain.”
Because it was totally normal to talk to strangers about makeup. Totally and completely normal.

Virell’s eyes didn’t immediately leave the products on the shelves; he smiled when he realized someone was talking to him. When he realized what she was saying, she had his full attention, though. “Oh?” he asked. “I don’t mind a little reapplication every now and then.”
Depending on the occasion, though, sometimes he needed makeup that stayed on. Water proof, sweat proof… He shifted positions and adjusted the bag on his arm as he gave her a look over. She seemed familiar but he couldn’t immediately place it. “A lot of the longer last stains have a strange taste to them. I haven’t tried a few of these yet—do you know a lot about this one?”
He gestured to a few new lines the brand had released. “I’ve heard good things about some of them, but I’m looking for a long lasting, durable stain—without any aftertaste. I have a bad habit of licking my lips,” he lied; he wasn’t quite sure he wanted to tell a stranger that he wasn’t really worried about how the flavor tasted to him—just the person he was kissing.

Lavender was quiet for a while, thinking and looking over the selection before her. Finally she moved down the aisle, going to another well known brand and picking up a small box. “What’s your color range? For you, I’m just going to go out on a limb and assume either you go for a natural look or bright red to match your eyes.”
She grabbed another box and brought them both over to the blonde. “So, I’ve found that this brand can last for up to six hours, even with licking your lips a lot, plus I’ve never had any sort of aftertaste. But, the color is super vibrant with the red, so if you like that, try this.”
Looking him over, she nodded slowly. “Did you do your makeup today? It looks great.”

Virell, flattered, smiled. “I did, thank you.” It didn’t take him long to make a selection; though his eyes lingered on the red, he was more interested in the natural look. “Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of being taken seriously if people can tell how much makeup I’m wearing. Not that I need it to look good,” he shrugged and put her selection in his basket. “I just like to outshine whoever I can.”
He flashed her a quick smile. “But you know a lot about makeup, I’d suspect you must be the same.”
He couldn’t figure out where he knew her from, but the nagging voice in the back of his head was getting louder. He eyed the red she was holding and couldn’t help but wonder if Nick would like it. He liked the red, but was it too gaudy? Oh, hell. What did Virell care if it was gaudy? “…I should try both,” he decided, accepting the red, too. “Thank you.” And then it clicked, as his brain was searching for a name and came up with her face. He paused, blinked, and then looked back up. “Oh, I know you, don’t I? You do videos online, I’ve seen your blog. Right?”

Lavender blinked, a small flush coming to her face. “You...you’ve seen my videos? And my blog? Seriously?” Well. Well! This was an unexpected surprise! Not a bad one, and for a moment she felt really excited. “Yeah, I do. I’m Lavender, I have a makeup blog and have done some video tutorials on youtube...thanks for watching me!”
She felt really, really honored and let out a laugh, going back over to the wall and grabbing a sparkling blue eyeshadow from off of a hook. “I’ve been kind of on a bit of a hiatus, but I was actually thinking of doing another video or at least a blog post today, it’s why I’m out.”
The girl looked him up and down again, frowning slightly. “You...you were in a fashion magazine weren’t you? A local one, you were on the cover in September? Unless I’m mistaken. There was a great article on face masks in that issue and I’ve referred to it at least a few dozen times, if that’s not you, then you look a heck of a lot like that guy, and should most likely consider modeling, I think you’d be great at it.”

At that, Virell laughed; he was hardly one to be embarrassed—or modest, really. You didn’t get noticed by being modest. “I don’t think I’ve seen those videos, but I’ll have to go look for them tonight. And not because I’m vain,” he reassured, but it was only half heartedly. He extended his hand to her and introduced, “Virell. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Lavender. I mean, officially, since magazines and the internet don’t quite count. I like your reviews, I think you have good taste. And your tutorials are very creative. I’m jealous that you can get away with wearing so many colors. I’m glad you’re coming off of your hiatus, I’d love to see what you’re doing. Clearly, there are people in the world who can use your expertise,” he added, gesturing to the suggestions she’d given him. “I’d have been disappointed if I wasted money on more makeup I can’t use. I’m very excited to go try these.” Maybe tonight, if Nick was free.

“Of course! It’s my pleasure!” She grinned. “Maybe one day you could help me out with a video? I’ve never done makeup for a guy, it might be fun, what do you say? Plus you have such a great skin tone, and flawless skin to boot.”
Maybe he would be able to give her a boost of creativity. Quickly, she dug around in her purse and pulled out a small box full of business cards. Taking one out she handed it to Virell and grinned. “Call me when you’re free. Or text me, or send an email. All of the info’s on there, plus my youtube link and my blog link. Tell your friends if you see anything that interests you, and best of luck with that lip stain. I hope whoever you’re buying it for thinks you look amazing, because I’m sure that you will.”
Lavender winked and grinned. You didn’t buy bright red lipstick just because you liked it. You bought it because you hoped someone else would like you wearing it.

“Oh, I like you,” Virell all but purred; he couldn’t just not love her after such a sweet compliment. Plus, she seemed smart. He gave her a look when she mentioned ‘whoever he was buying it for’, but the smile on his face was obviously of amusement. “I’ll have to give you the full report on how well it goes when I message you.” He took her card and gave it a quick look over before nodding approvingly and pocketing it. “You seem like a lot of fun so I don’t see how I could resist taking you up on that offer. We’ll have to work something out, I’d love to see what you could do for me. I’ll have to bring you over some samples I’ve got stored away. Promotional material,” he shrugged, “But it’s not my skin tone or my colors. I think they’d be beautiful on you, though.”
It sounded like a good plan—kill three birds with one stone, right? Get some free exposure, get some makeup done, and get rid of some of his endless makeup hoard? He adjusted the basket on his arm; the plastic bands were digging into his skin and he was now (painfully) aware that he should probably head out of the store before he totally cut off circulation. “I’ll message you when I get home tonight,” he promised. “I’m looking forward to planning something with you.”

“Sounds great, Virell! I look forward to it!” This was going to be great, possibly they could even become partners or something...or he could become a recurring guest on her videos...There was just possibility that she didn’t have before--and she liked it.
With a grin, Lavender gave a little finger wave and went back to hunting for a few new things, all glitter, of course.
Perhaps she was well on the way to kicking this funk to the curb and telling it to take a hike.
Honestly, she sure hoped that she was. She needed something new and exciting.
