Meeting with Ashanite had gone as well as Virell could have expected—considering he’d left unscathed and with at least a little to think about. Naturally, he’d texted Nick the second he was powered down and power walked to his house after confirming it was fine to come over.
It had only taken him about fifteen minutes but he’d managed to exert himself just a bit. When he reached the apartment he had to pause and rest against the wall for a few seconds to catch his breath and try to fix his hair. Just because this was important didn’t mean it was worth showing up all messy. He withdrew his phone to check his appearance and hastened to clean himself up.
Thankfully, he figured it was a quick fix; he didn’t want to show Nick any ugly side of him no matter how important the information was.
When he was satisfied with his appearance he tucked the phone away and knocked on the door. He didn’t wait for Nick to answer; instead he opened the door and stepped inside and called, “Nick? I’m here, I’m letting myself in. Where are you?”

Nick was often a daring fellow. Sometimes he was daring enough to really test the wonder and power of his phone case by texting in the shower, and today had been one of those days. He had just stepped in when Virell sent a message, and as the other blonde had a special ring, he nabbed the phone from off of the counter and said yes to his coming over. Of course he wanted to see Virell. He loved seeing Virell.
Sadly though, it didn’t take nearly long enough for him to get there, and when Nick heard his familiar voice calling out to him, he sighed and stepped into an old pair of sweatpants, a towel around his shoulders and his hair absolutely dripping.
“I’m in the bedroom, Relly. You’re welcome to come in, what’s up? I just got out of the shower.”
Yeah. Like that didn’t sound like the beginning of some hyped up X rated film or anything. But. It just couldn’t be helped.

“Oh,” Virell purred, making his way to the bedroom. He paused in the doorway, resting against the frame. “This sounds like a movie I did once.” He made no effort to conceal his admiration of Nick’s body; his eyes rested on what he could see between the sweatpants and the towel. There were a thousand things he wanted to say—he wanted to tease, to flirt, to kiss—but he’d come here for a reason and he couldn’t let Nick distract him. “I ran into him,” he said, cutting to the chase. “The Negaverse Agent, the one you talked to me about? I don’t want to ruin the mood—you look amazing, and standing here in your bedroom with you half dressed is really distracting me from what I came to tell you. But I found him, and I tried to snoop. He’s attractive, but he’s an odd one. I think you deserve better, there’s something about him that I don’t think I like. And not just because I’m jealous of him. I’m sorry for dumping all this on you,” he said suddenly, “I didn’t know where to start and now I’ve vomited all these words. I don’t quite know where to start, I just saw him and I rushed right over.”

Nick blinked, raising the towel from his shoulders to rub at his hair, trying to dry it at least a little. He grinned at Virell for his first statement, and really enjoyed the way his eyes followed his body--he liked that about Virell. Liked that maybe more than anything else. The way that Virell appreciated him. If this had been Arias visiting, all he would have gotten was a vivid blush and a stammer of apology...no, he liked the stareing. It made him feel good.
But...but what Virell said next made him frown. “You...you met Ashanite…? Are you okay? Did...did he hurt you?” Nick reached out and took Virell’s hand, giving it a squeeze and drawing him onto the bed.
“He didn’t hurt you...did he? Is that why you think you don’t like him…?” He looked the blonde over, trying to find some sort of bruise or other evidence of Ashanite’s treachery. There was nothing visible, and while that made him relax a little, he still felt on edge.
“Wh...what did he say? Did...did he mention me…?”

When Nick took his hand, Virell couldn’t help but smile. He liked to keep a certain attitude up around Nick but sometimes he was just so sweet that it faltered—even if only for a second. His heart nearly fluttered just having Nick worry over him and he tried not to look like he was enjoying it so much. He was supposed to be serious! This was serious!
“I’m fine, I swear. He didn’t touch me. No, I don’t like him because he didn’t mention you. I tried, really. I gave him plenty of opportunities, I wanted him to. I wanted to come here with good news for you.”
His lips pursed and he drew closer to Nick on the bed. “I know how much you care about him. I wanted to have something I could say to give you hope, or to make you happy. But…He just seemed like he’d have been happy to take anyone home with him. He was handsome, you were right about that, but I don’t know how much brain he’s hiding between his ears. Any guy who would toss you to the side is an idiot. And if he’s going to be so pigheaded that he thinks just any pretty face on the street could replace you, well—I don’t like him. He’s lucky to have ever had your attention. I don’t think a guy like that will ever find happiness, though. Not if he can’t recognize when perfecting is standing right in front of him. And, you know?”
He shrugged and lowered his head just slightly to rest it against Nick’s arm. “…I kinda think he doesn’t deserve it if he’s going to be like that.”

“Oh.” For a moment, Nick wasn’t sure what to think, or how to feel. On one hand, he was so happy that Virell hadn’t been hurt, but on the other hand, there was a surge of bitter disappointment that Ashanite hadn’t mentioned him at all. Did the General even remember him? Or had he just...wiped Whisler out of his mind when he had broken his heart?
Nick’s chest ached, and for he felt his eyes begin to burn, so he did the only thing he could think of so that Virell wouldn’t see him cry. Quickly, he pulled the blonde into his lap and pressed him close, burying his face in Virell’s braid.
He hesitated a moment, his fingers brushing along the woven hair and took out the band that held it all together, letting the strands flow through his fingers as they all came loose. “...I do like your hair down, Relly. You’re so beautiful.”

It didn’t take a genius to know that Nick was upset; for a moment, Virell hesitated, torn between letting him pretend like he was hiding it or just calling him out on it and telling him to let it out. A part of him wanted to just sit up and take Nick’s face in his own and kiss it, but Nick had gone through a lot of effort to make sure his hair was in his face. It helped that it felt nice to have Nick play with his hair, so Virell stayed down for a few seconds longer than he thought he’d be able to. “You’re so sweet, Nick,” he said softly. When he moved, it was to wrap his arms around Nick’s torso. He kept his head down, letting his hair spill into his eyes. “You’re over there dealing with all this bad news and you’re still thinking about me? You’re beautiful too, you know. And not just on the outside. I like what’s inside of you, too. You’re like a finely cut gem—no matter how the light hits you, you shine. Your precious and unique, meant to be on display. Maybe in a necklace, close to the heart. You light fires in people who are dark inside. And you love people who don’t deserve it, and I don’t like him because it just burns me up inside that he could hurt someone so important to me. I didn’t tell him I knew you, I didn’t mention your name. Maybe he was trying to play coy with me? He just seemed so oily, so slick. Like the grease in the hair of some 80s punk’s pompadour. Perfectly sculpted but just so wrong.”

“Thank you…” Nick’s words were halfway between a whisper and a sigh and he kissed the top of Virell’s head, holding him close. “I love you, you do know that right? Sometimes I think I’d go crazy if I didn’t have you. You keep me stable...just by existing.”
He felt hollow though, even as he felt the affection pouring from Virell...he felt empty...because he loved Ashanite. There was nothing past tense about it. He still loved that stupid, horrible General, even as he wanted to destroy him...and save him...and do other things to him that he couldn’t quite think of at the moment.
“You wanna spend the night? I think I could use a few distractions...and there’s nobody but you who’d I’d like distracting me…” Nick drew away slightly, pushing the hair away from Virell’s face so he could look into those ruby eyes, even though his own amethyst ones were somewhat full of tears.
He didn’t care. Well, he did...but...he wouldn’t for long, he was sure.
“Love you.”

The words touched Virell and filled him with a sense of pride and joy. The look in Nick’s eyes, though, just felt like needles prickling his skin, right through to his heart. “Well,” he started slowly, “We’re already in bed, so…”
He shifted positions just slightly before pushing himself up so he was at face level with Nick. His smile was soft, and sad, and he tucked Nick’s hair behind his ears. He knew Nick loved him—Nick was full of love. Nick probably loved like twenty people this very second. But for right now, Nick was looking at him, and for some reason that made his heart flutter and his stomach flop. “I love you, too.”
Carefully, he reached up to brush away what tears he could. “I’ll take care of you, tonight.” He’d do everything in his power to give Nick more to think about than Ashanite.
