■ SELFLESSThe ease with which Sam sets himself aside, and the lengths he will go to for others is unique. He is an excellent listener and supporter, and is generous to a fault. He gives exemplary hugs and is an all-around light in the lives of people who give him the chance. ■ APPREHENSIVENerves, anxieties, and the fear of rejection often prevent Sam from taking action and achieving what he wants. This usually results in unrequited feelings and an ongoing state of idleness or dormancy. ■ SPIRITUALSam has a soft heart and a diligence for the work of his God. He studies the word consistently and carefully, and is constantly penitent and humble. He knows how to listen for personal revelation, and strives to serve in the manner of his Savior. ■ STUDIOUSDeadlines, grades, and hard work have never been a problem for this go-getter. Bettering his mind is Sam's priority, second only to God and his family. As long as distractions are eliminated, Sam can study for long periods of time without growing weary or losing interest. His retention and comprehension have been practiced to near perfection. ■ AMIABLESam is not easily put off. He sees the good in people and is always open to new friendships. He has an easygoing demeanor and a humor that is light but engaging. ■ PERCEPTIVEIt is easy for Sam to see and remember small details, and he uses deductive reasoning effectively to come to conclusions. Often he can deduce when his friends are feeling happy or melancholy, and their motives or desires. Though he is usually accurate, sometimes he misses the mark and it can be difficult for him to accept that he is wrong, even when the right answer is just in front of his nose.

CHILDHOODSam was not overly sheltered as many raised-in-the-church LDS kids are. He was exposed to differing political opinions and various forms of media that contrasted what was commonly demonstrated by those of his faith, which helped him form an open-minded philosophy and a desire to understand the points and values of all people. Still, he remained strong in his conviction that his church is true, and was baptized at 8 years old. He did not actively participate in finding friends, but those who needed one seemed to find him and acquaint with him. When he discovered his magical capabilities, his faith was tested more than it ever had been before. His parents struggled also, and Sam was almost alienated by them. Witchcraft and wizardry didn't quite have a good reputation as far as Christians went, but soon enough Oscar and Jane came to an understanding. Still, Sam wears a distinction from his brothers that isn't easy.
SCHOOL YEARS Being a Mormon in the Wizarding World seemed even harder to Sam than being a Wizard in the Mormon world. He feared his classmates would not understand his need to respect the sabbath day, or his dedication to modesty and gospel study. He went to school with a plan to keep his head down and learn well, which served him well in his first years. But surprisingly his peers were neutral if not welcoming and supportive; some of them even a bit curious. He made friends as easily as he had before, and kept his resolve all throughout. He had a few misadventures in his later years, but nothing too scandalous or significant.
POST GRADUATIONA year after Sam graduated, he began preparing to serve his mission. He is working toward that goal now, while seeking a job to help him cover the cost.
