The last thing that Cordelia Carden remembered prior to drifting off curled around a spare pillow in her hospital bed was the light brush of fingertips against her cheek and the soft sound of a familiar voice. Fritz. It had been enough to ease her back into the deep sleep that she needed to recover the energy that she had expended in using too much magic, in being unable to keep her emotions under control.

In sleep a smile had settled on her lips, fading only as she began to stir. The medication for the pain must have been wearing off, or it was simply just time to be awake again. Cordelia shifted slightly with a low groan, opening her eyes just in time to see the door open to the friendly, chipper face of her nurse.

"Good morning, Ms Carden, I-- Oh. I didn't realize you still had a visitor. Slept in the chair all night, did he? Like that cousin of yours the first night you spent here." The young woman smiled as she approached the monitors to check her vitals, making note as she added the information onto Cordelia's chart.

"They're good men. Family has always been important to Luc and Fritz..." She turned her head, looking to the young man in the chair. "He's... A good friend. I'm lucky to have both of them in my life looking out for me."

Fritz was not tall, not really; in fact, he was relatively average sized, just around five foot ten, and not hugely muscular either, thought he had some definition here and there. He was, in all essence, just a simple, average human being.

A simple, average human being who was not made to sleep curled up sideways in armchairs that were specifically made for temporary visits. It was a decent enough sized chair, with a footrest and everything, but Fritz was awkwardly crammed into it, lying on his side with one of the hospital blankets thrown haphazardly over him.

He'd woken with a crick in his neck sometime in the outrageous hours of the morning, glanced over to make sure that Cordy was still okay, and then tried a new position in the hopes that it would make sleep come easier and maybe less uncomfortable.

He was asleep now, after a few hours of dozing in fits and spells. Fritz did not stir as the nurse came trundling in - nurses came in every hour or so to check vitals, and he'd learned in his time in the hospital to block out the sounds of them subconsciously.

He had a pillow over his head, and one crammed beneath it, Fritz's eyes fluttering with every slow, deep breath he took.

Lucien had left Cordy alone for the night despite his reluctance to. He'd gone home to check on Arin since his roommate hadn't been answering his phone and by the time he'd finished up at the apartment it was too late to get a bus anywhere so he'd stayed at home. He figured his cousin would be fine, she was in the hospital after all, and he'd made sure to tell the nurses she was not allowed to check herself out.

His determination eventually made them agree even though Cordelia was old enough to be able to do that. So he knew she'd be fine if he stayed away.

Coming in to a room full of people wasn't what he expected when he returned the next morning. The nurse noticed him first and smiled brightly. "See, she's right where we told you she'd be. Even had someone else come check on her."

Lucien frowned before he noticed the lump in the recliner that the nurse indicated. "I guess it's a good thing I went home..."

"A very good thing. The two of you wouldn't have fit on that recliner together." Cordelia winced as she shifted, sucking in a breath while nudging the pillow away from her. She'd slept in one position for most of the night and it had left her feeling stiff while the lingering effects of the medication had her feeling slightly dazed and more than a little fuzzy.

"It's Fritz, Luc. I know I've mentioned Fritz to you before." Fritz, the friend of hers that she had tea with from time to time. Fritz, one of the few people that her door was open to at any hour of the night. Fritz, the friend who she had been meaning to introduce Lucien to for some time now. Ever since her cousin had returned to Destiny City, honestly, but just hadn't yet for the underlying worry that they might not get along-- that it might change things.

Things have changed.

Cordelia brought a hand up to gently rub at her face, closing her eyes as she took a deep breath only to slowly release it. She didn't want to think about what might have changed, instead wishing that she could wake Fritz from where she was without startling him. "He worries just as much as you do, .Luc... Have you already had breakfast?"

He couldn't remember what he had dreamed about. Or what he was dreaming about. Or if he was dreaming at all, Fritz lost somewhere in the muzzy, messy threshold between dreaming and awake. He was somewhat vaguely aware of voices, and of a gentle beeping sound. Of warmth, and then a soft sweetness that seemed to permeate into his heart, warming his soul.

Fritz forced his eyes open, twisted, rolled, and promptly fell out of the chair with a crash.

"Bloody hell - "

"You've said that tea, even if it's got milk in it, doesn't count as breakfast so technically no." He figured he would be able to check on Cordelia first before actually getting something to eat. He hadn't been that hungry when he'd woken up so he wasn't too worried about it.

He had intended to ask her how she was actually doing and find out what the nurses may have told her but was interrupted by noise from the recliner. Lucien turned to look just as Fritz managed to roll over and fall out of the chair.

That took some talent.

Resisting the urge to laugh and knowing Cordelia would be worried he gave her a look before going over to where the other man was on the floor. "Need a hand?" He held a hand out, willing to help Fritz up if he needed it.

"That's because it-- Oh!" When Fritz began to tumble she reached for him as though reaching would be enough to keep him from hitting the floor. Were she not attached to tubes and wires she would've tried to get out of the hospital bed to help him herself.

Fortunately, Luc was moving to help him so that she didn't have to figure out the logistics of plucking monitoring equipment off. She didn't have to worry and she could ease back against the mattress and the pillows for a moment longer.

"Good morning, Fritz."

Fortunately for Fritz, he hadn't fallen too hard. He reached up and accepted the offered hand with a small wince and dragged himself to his feet, letting go to brush himself off, feeling a mixture of vague embarrassment, weariness and a general state of confusion, because he was still at least partially asleep.

He rubbed at his eyes, nudging his glasses askew in the process and ignoring the small flutter in his stomach at Cordelia's greeting.

"Good morning," he said, and pushed his glasses back down, smiling at the pair of them. "I hope you slept well, in spite of being hooked up to every machine in the country."

He was glad that the other man, Fritz, wasn't hurt knowing that wouldn't have helped Cordelia any. When Fritz was on his feet he stepped back and set his coffee down on the small table that was next to the hospital bed.

"Less machines than when i first dropped her off at least."

Not by much but at least she was looking a bit better and at least here she couldn't hurt herself worse. "Thank you for keeping her company though."

Cordelia remained quiet for a moment as the nurse finished noting her charts for the morning, glancing between the two men left in the room with her once the nurse was gone. "I'm certain I slept better than you did, Fritz, machines or no... And I'd sleep better yet if Luc would convince them to let me go home." Her lips pressed together and she gave her cousin a mildly perturbed look that lasted only a moment.

"This wasn't how I'd intended to introduce the two of you, mind you... Fritz, this is Lucien-- Luc. My cousin. Luc, this is Fritz, my..." There wasn't a single word to come straight to her tongue when it came to what be the best way to introduce Fritz. He was so many things to her that to simply call him a friend seemed like calling the Great Lakes a handful of puddles. How could she put into one word the way he made her heart skip even as his presence soothed her? How could she put into one word the bond they shared as kindred spirits who had seen things? How could she put into one single word just how important he was?

"This is Fritz." She said softly again with a gentle smile on her lips. There was no way she could put it all into one word, but the tone of her voice said enough and the fact that he was there and had spent the night in the chair alongside her bed said the rest. "Fritz, are you alright?"

He was trying hard not to think too hard about any of this, except it probably wasn't working too well. Fritz rearranged his expression to one of curiosity and interest as Cordelia gestured at the man beside her bed, his heart giving a painful flutter at the trailing off.

Fritz is my...

No.

Stop.

Stop.

Fritz held out a hand to Lucien, eyes bright. "Hello, Lucien, I'm very glad to meet you. Any relative of Cordelia's is a good friend of mine already, I hope."

"I hear your name mentioned ofte enough you might as well be." He smirked slightly as he shook the other man's hand. "Cordy keeps saying she'll introdouce us and then life gets in the way."

He knew Cordelia had probably wanted them to meet under better circumstances but it could be worse. At least Cordy wasn't too badly hurt and she was getting better fast.

"If she'd stop complaining so much they might even let her out tomorrow." He grinned, looking down at Cordy again.

"I don't mention him that often, Luc..." Often enough that despite her words there was a light flush on her face that she hoped neither of them would notice. Maybe if she was lucky the hospital bed would just swallow her whole and she wouldn't have to think about the situation anymore. She would just disappear into a pile of pillows, blankets and wires...

"I was only complaining that you brought me here in the first place when I'm obviously fine," she muttered softly as she closed her eyes, resting her head lightly against the pillow. "The two of you should go find breakfast. I task you both with making sure that the other eats something substantial enough to be considered breakfast."

Fritz opened his mouth and then shut it again, trying to ignore the way that his heart was fluttering ridiculously in his chest. He took a breath and instead gave Lucien a cheerful smile - or rather, as cheerful as he could make it when he'd just spent the night curled awkwardly in a chair.

"Well, I'm glad we finally did, then," he said, and cast a glance over at Cordelia, his expression softening a little. "And no, you needed to be here. I wasn't about to let you just go home, not after all that had happened. You have to get well."

Fritz took a step towards her, hesitating, then reached out and very, very lightly brushed his fingers over Cordelia's before taking a hasty step back again, glancing over at Lucien.

"Did you want to get some food? That sounds like a smart idea."

"If you didn't need to be here they'd have discharged you already." He managed not to roll his eyes but it was a close thing. The doctors had said she was doing better though so he didn't expect her to be in much longer. She needed the extra care though after everything. They had to take care of themselves and that meant going to the doctors when they had to. "So you'll just have to listen to Fritz and I and stay here until they say you're well enough to leave."

She'd be grumpy at him for a while for making her stay but it would be worth it to know she wasn't injured.

The idea of breakfast though did sound good. He hadn't eaten anything substantial yet. "Breakfast sounds good. The cafe they have downstairs has pretty good food too."
