Name: Roknhin
Age: 26
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Leans toward males, but does make exceptions
Craft: Harper
Rank: N/A (stopped practicing a while ago)
Location: High Reaches Weyr
Physical Description: Roknhin is tall with a broad-shouldered build. His eyes are light hazel, and he has dark auburn colored hair that is short and wavy. He has fair skin that is dotted with pale, barely visible freckles. He is reasonably handsome, with a warm smile (when he shows it) and pleasant features.
Personality: Roknhin started life, and his candidacy, as a bright and energetic boy. Never one to let things get him down, he was always the first one to say 'don't worry, there's always next time!', eternally optimistic about his chances. Even now, a kind of quiet optimism still lingers with him. There's a small part of his mind that is still always looking forward, always believing there's a silver lining and that all things will turn out in the end, though it's hard for even him to believe it.

Roknhnin is immensely hard on himself. He doesn't like to be the kind of person who points fingers or complains about his luck, so he heaps all the blame on himself. Though this once encouraged him to take up a mindset of constant improvement, over time, this inner rhetoric became more self-defeating than helpful. Since the death of his sister, he has struggled with self-doubt, and worries that when the moment comes, he won't know what to do, and this can lead to him freezing up in difficult situations.

Roknhin has always been a thoughtful person, putting other people's needs above his own. He's empathetic in the sense of being able to put himself in other people's shoes. From a young age he was able to make the jump many children struggle with, from understanding what would upset them to being able to realize that someone else might take something differently. He often notices first when someone is upset by something, and is good at soothing heightened emotions and settling fights. He's extroverted by nature, deriving energy from crowds and being around people. He's only really happy when he's surrounded by friends, but recently he's been pulling away, afraid that his low spirits might bring down the mood. He pushes himself to put on a brave face around younger friends, not wanting to discourage or worry them. With others, he hates to complain, but doesn't have the energy to maintain a cheerful facade, leaving a kind of weary and self-deprecating pessimism.

In most things, Roknhin strives to accommodating. He does his best to be helpful and he rarely says no to an honest request. It's not that he's a pushover, there's just very little he considers burdensome, especially if in the service of a friend (or the Weyr). He runs on a doctrine of 'respect your elders, indulge your juniors', so he's typically polite and obliging to everyone.

Positive Trait List Thoughtful, Diligent, Polite
Negative Trait List Unconfident, Self-defeating, Indecisive
History: Rokhnin was born in High Reaches and has lived there all his life. The child of at least one dragon rider, he was put in the creche from an early age. He wasn't particularly close to his foster parents, or his birth parents, but had an older half-sister that he looked up to immensely. She always made a point of the fact that they were siblings, and would stick up for him with staunch loyalty which he returned with an equal measure of the same.

When he was old enough to start a craft, Roknhin took up Harping, enjoying learning instruments and making up songs for the younger kids. Of course, there was really only one thing he wanted to do with his life, and that was to be a dragon rider. He would never admit it, but he was a little happy that his sister hadn't impressed yet, so they could Stand at the same time as Candidates. He hoped that they could both impress, and maybe even weyrlings together. Unfortunately, that turn brought a large clutch and a lack of candidates. And, unable to find theirs, many of the newly hatched dragonets careened violently around the Sands looking for a partner. At some point in the confusion, his sister was caught by one of their claws. Roknhin managed to get to her just in time to hold her as her body went limp and see the light go out of her eyes. A second later, a small green screamed and went between. She'd been struck just moments after impressing.

To say that it was a shock for the young teen didn't even begin to cover it. His sister was always someone he looked up to, the kind of person who would help him out whenever he was in trouble. Two turns his senior, she seemed like a strong and invincible force to him. Seeing her die in his arms while he was powerless to save her shattered his self-confidence. As far as first hatchings go, it wasn't a good one for anybody, but for Roknhin it was utterly devastating.

For a while he was inconsolable, becoming totally withdrawn, though he continued to Stand, determined, even through it all, of his desire to be a dragonrider. Still, when he didn't impress the next few times, honestly, he was relieved. He didn't know if he could deal with anyone else's thoughts in his head, and he wasn't sure it would be right to force that kind of grief on such a young mind. But with time, the pain began to fade, as most things do, and he eventually bounced back to the optimistic and determined boy he had been before (though never quite as bright or cheerful), throwing himself into his duties as a candidate with a new gusto. He had several younger siblings, both biological and foster siblings, that he would look out for, trying to be for them what his sister was to him.

One of the older (and certainly one of the more experienced) candidates, Roknhin often acted as a big brother to the younger kids, comforting the ones that got homesick, helping them with their lessons, or giving advice on how to deal with the candidate master. And every turn, he congratulated younger and younger candidates as they moved on to weyrlinghood. Every turn he watched friends that had chosen not to Stand advance in their Craft and move on with their lives, while he was stuck in a kind of limbo.

When thread came, if anything, impressing seemed even more important. This is what they had always known, the same stories he'd heard since childhood- that one day their ancient enemy would return and they would be needed to stop it. Yet by then it was uncertain if he would even get to stand again. Though he was one of the ones on the edge after the last hatching, counting off the days to his next nameday, it slowly became clear that no golds would rise again before he aged out. Not wanting to delay the inevitable, he left the candidate's barrack several weeks before his nameday.
