One Sunday afternoon, an elderly couple sat on their porch with glasses of iced tea. Even after 67 years together, they still held hands whenever they could. The elderly woman looked to her husband. "George, do you think I’ll see you in the afterlife?"
"I hope so. So long as I’m with my Mary," he said, bringing her hand to his lips.
"I will always be with you, George.”
And with that, the man kissed his wife.
That was two years ago. Since then, George has been sitting on the porch alone. The first few months after Mary's death were difficult. He seldom left the house and would sit in his chair all day, staring at nothing.
Sometimes, he could hear the wind chimes ringing and he'd think that it was his wife's spirit coming to greet him. But as soon as the wind stops blowing, he's brought back to reality.
Standing outside, a translucent old woman was looking at him through the window. "Oh, George. I wish you could see me."
The wind was beginning to pick up. She felt nothing but she could see the trees bending and the leaves blowing in the wind. Then, she heard the ring of the wind chimes above her head.
Looking up, she raised her hand and swatted at the metal rods. She was taken aback when they reacted to her touch.
From inside the living room, George could hear chimes. When he looked out the window, he saw the trees standing still. No wind. But then there was another ring. He quickly opened the door to find the chimes swinging back and forth. Then almost instantly, they stopped. As if they were startled by his presence.
Mary froze when she saw George standing in the doorway. She hadn't realized the wind had stopped when she was still ringing the chimes. She felt like a child caught stealing cookies from the jar.
"M-Mary?"
She was stunned. She desperately called out to him but to no avail.
"M-Mary...is that you?" George stared at the wind chimes hanging, his eyes never leaving them. "Please. If it's you, answer me."
She followed his gaze up to the wind chimes above her invisible head. Determined, she raised her hand and swung at the chimes. They rang beautifully.
George was frozen in place. He didn't actually expect for the chimes to move on their own. "Is it truly you, dear? Ring once for 'yes' and twice for 'no'. So answer me. Are you my Mary?"
Ring.
He broke down in tears when he heard that ring. His thick glasses magnified his tears. "Oh, Mary, girl. I missed you so much."
The following three years have been great for George. He set up wind chimes all over the house. So when he talks to Mary, he can hear her answer. In his bed, he would sleep on the left side just like he did when his wife was still alive. Little did he know that the empty space next to him was occupied by the spirit of his beloved.
George left his body in his sleep. He opened his eyes to his beautiful wife. He moved forward and held his love for the first time in years. "Mary...I missed you so so much."
"I missed you too, George."
2nd place: cherriox Prize: 50b gold
There was once a lonely ghost, she roamed in a forest all alone. But one day, in the distance, she discovered a town. She hid behind a tree and peeked at the people. There we some dressed in gowns and top hats, and some dressed in tattered rags. The people in hats carried huge bags of paper. While the people in rags carried nothing but their worn out boots. The ghost thought this funny, why would people care so much for paper money? The ghost decided to give a gift, so she will be accepted into their society. She skipped gleefully through the forest with her brilliant plan, and arrived at her cave which was packed full of gems. So she picked up a gem and went back into the town. When the people saw her, they gave her a frown. Until they saw what she was holding behind her back. The rich leaped forward and tried to snatch it, when a man finally got it, he held it up with pride. The crowd soon dissipated when they realized the ghost had no more. The ghost did this three more times, but every time they just got greedier and asked her for more, their smiles wider and bellies fuller. The ghost noticed the poor didn’t even try, and when she offered, a rich would just pluck it away. The ghost became angry at their materialism, but was too scared to be lonely again. She took a liking to this little boy, who was nice enough to ask how her day was. Though she couldn’t speak, she motioned him to follow her. She led him to her cave and he stared in wonderment. He walked into the cave and took a total of 6. One for my mom, one for my dad, and one for each of my four siblings, he said. He thanked the ghost and went on his merry way. To this, the ghost was shocked, he didn’t even take a whole handful. So the next day she went back, to lead the poor to her cave, some rejoiced and cried in happiness. Though they wouldn’t have it all, they’d finally have some food on the plate, some things they can call theirs. The ghost hadn’t been this happy in a long time, and she decided that it was fit to take her leave. Her greed for attention dwindled through her selfless actions, the boy helped her learn this important lesson. She gave a sad smile and small wave to the little boy, left her cave, and faded away.
đź‘» And the rest of the stories which were all very well written! It was very tough to pick who won between 5 different judges đź‘»

A young teenage female, around 23 in human years and it's been about 10 years since she's died. She looked around for someone to torture. She was simply bored and was a bit lonely. No one ever noticed the girl, which was much to her disapproval. She always tried to make herself known but the person would always ignore her presence. She absolutely despised it. She hated it so much that she just tortured that person. Of course, that would not solve her problems but it relieved some of the loneliness but still, more just came. Maybe it's just that ghosts are apparently common where she's at.
She floated around, desperately searching for someone to sense her. The ghost lady smirked as she saw a couple eating lunch on the ground. She swiftly floated over to them, only to make the picnic basket float into the air, but unfortunately they completely disregarded her. She pouted at them before deciding to possess the female. She made her utter a few things that would make even the pope cringe at how disgusting it was. The male shrugged it off, trying not to care that his girlfriend was possessed. Although, on the inside he was trembling with fear at the very sound of the demonic voice that was escaping his girlfriends lips. The only thing was that the poor ghost could not detect the fear that was obviously radiating off of him.
She scowled at him before escaping the woman's body. The woman's body went limp before gasping and looking confused. She flew away, looking for someone else to mess around with. She felt another ghost's presence and turned around slowly, squinting a bit at the other spirit.
"So I see that you are still bored and lonely, hmm?" He said. It was a male ghost named Oliver that she had once grew fond of when she had first became a ghost. "yes, Oli." She muttered, feeling a little bad at the moment. He might've caught her playing with the humans once more.
"Ah, Clarissa, always messing around people... Can't you just grow up and go onto the afterlife already?" Oliver pouted and floated closer to her. She flinched away. Clarissa knew that he was going to do something that he was going to regret in the future. And unfortunately for him, she was not ready for this.
"No. Stay away from me.."
"No...I'm gonna come closer to you," He purred. Oh no, she thought as he slowly crept closer. "Until you aren't lonely anymore..."
"Please don't." She sternly said, although he didn't seem to care, as he was already up close and personal.
He smirked before hugging her tightly but comfortably. She sighed a little and melted into the hug. "You're really annoying, ya know that?" He whispered into her ear.
"Yeah, I know." She smiled.
Satans Hand
The Menacing Spirit
It was dark and cloudy, no moonlight to be seen.As the spirit floated.she searched thick and thin to find the one she so desired to torture. As she had no way of harming the living physically. She still found ways to make their life hell, usually by making them lose their mind or simply driving them to suicide. She always had her way.She could never show herself in broad daylight as it was dangerous, it was one day she found the one she called her victim, a lone boy wearing baggy jeans, baseball cap and his nice new shoes. To her he was known as the threat to the locals. He was the one who would terrorise the town, by breaking into cars or by fighting anyone who dared to crossed his path. She silently followed him all around the park, watching how he walked, how he checked over his own shoulder coldly, giving anyone he seen from afar a death stare. The boy met another male figure, though it was dark, you could barely make out their faces. They talked for awhile. She could only make out a couple of sentences, “Meet me by the high school in 30 minutes” and “bring him too”. She gasped as they both departed in different directions. The one she wanted left in the opposite direction and the other boy jogged in hers. She quickly hid herself not wanting herself known. The boy ran pass and dropped his wallet. I guess it was his loosely worn clothes that made it fall out and had him not knowing it was gone. She forced it to her, and gazed into the wallet. She scanned the wallet and seen the boy who was actually her own brother, she floated off in a hurry and felt a surge of anger hit her as she knew her sibling caused her own death 3 years ago, the pain struck her by then she was fuming, rage boiling in her body. She decided it was best to make her way to the high school. She found a nice subtle spot and sat there. Patiently waiting, 10 minutes went past and her brother showed up, a younger boy was being dragged across the ground looking as if he was already hurt. There was words that came out of his mouth “ let me go please, it wasn’t me. I-i-didn’t know what i was doing...please” then as he finished the words, a fist came hurling down onto his temple. The boy fell limp onto the ground. She forced herself to stay still and not make the move now, but her brother wasn’t her target, well not at this exact time. He sat the limp body of the boy on a wall. A few silent minutes went past and the other boy came into view walking with what seemed as a weapon of some sort. “Wake him up would you” He hurried his pace to the boy and kneeled next to him, “ don’t worry i’ll do it instead….Useless” He started to smack the lightly tap the kids face to wake him up. The boy came into conciousness and started panicking. “Hello, remember me.Ya know the guy you snitched on in class”. They grabbed the boy up from the ground and lifted him into the air, not only did they lift him up but they threw in a few punches to get their own adrenaline pumping. “ You thought you could be safe, you thought you could get away, this is where you will die” The spirit had about witnessed as much as she could endure. She was already rage filled and had murder in her eyes. The wind started to pick up and she decided to chant a horrid, evil song. “I can see you, i can smell you, i want to drink the blood the flows through you, put the boy down and venture into the depths of your demise” as she finished, her dead beat brother and the boy dropped the kid and turned around to look into the bushes of where they thought they heard the sound come from. They seen bushes rustling and shouted “ get out of there, if i find out who you are i’m going to skin you!” she made no hesistation to move. Branches cracked, voices were strung and windows shattered as she screamed “ LEAVE HIM ALONE”, they smirked and pointed at the boy on the ground. “ who him” her brother shouted. “Come out let us see you, come face to face with us.” She knew they wouldn’t be able to comprehend what she was. But she had a brilliant plan. She came into view but as a light grey figure, she had her head pointed towards the ground, hair flowing. Her head flung up and red eyes were visible to see. They looked at her in shock and couldn’t move.Slowly they started to regain movement, her brother tried running only to be met by a pothole. He tripped and smacked his head onto a rock, blood started to trickle down his face.He couldn’t get up, he was paralyzed, at once the other boy pulled out his small knife and ran towards her. He couldn’t do anything, no harm would be done to her.He made an attempt to get slash at her. Only to glide right through her selfless body.” wha-wha-what are you?” as he said that she muttered “ i am your worst nightmare” forming herself into her true form. She was wearing ragged clothes. Hair was filled with dirt and grime. Finger nails were sharp and mistreated. The boy had a heart attack at that point. After a few minutes he laid limp on the ground no pulse was visual. She stared at the poor boy who stared in horror of what he just witnessed.” She then muttered, no witnesses.” The boys soul left his body, gone and forgotten. She felt like that was enough. Sirens wailed all over. ~.~.~ Timelapse 2 months. Rumors spread of the boys who committed -suicide- Everyone talked about it.Everyone cried and wanted to know the truth. She found pleasure, she found that this is what she wanted. This is the attention she desired. She knew that this would carry on for many many years.

On sunny days, I prefer staying home. My family has always been the first to tell me that something may be wrong with me, that I'm driving myself crazy being trapped in here, day in and day out. I'd like to argue, because I find myself sitting in this small little room, completely happy. There are two things wrong with our world, people, and people who hate people. Both things are completely unproductive, and the reality is we die at the end of the day. This has been my train of logic since I met Gramps. Gramps has shown me many things in life, some things that I don't want anyone else to see. When I was four we began playing together, usually at night, when no one could hear us. He would roll balls towards me, draw on the wall and sometimes swing me around, but he never hurt me. He always left me curious though, because he only came out at night, and I never really saw his face. He always warned me that when the sun comes out, to stay inside. I never questioned it because he was so serious, it scared me. I've lived in my home for fifteen years, and I've never left when the sun is out. When my family leaves, I cry, worried the worst could happen to them if they were to be out for too long. Every year, since I was a child, people have died at an abnormally high amount where I live. Officials say it could be the water, the air, the area...anything to cover up what was really going on. The hard truth was that no one knew what was happening, we just knew that people went missing and that was that. Only at night are people safe, but this was something I believe I know. I choose to not tell anyone, because I know our inevitable truth. So I watch, every year, more people die...and I've wondered, is Gramps to blame? He's lived with me my whole life, but I've never seen him in the daylight..
