All good things had to come to an end, and unfortunately for Virell, that included clothes.

His jacket had lived a long life and had a good run, and despite being several seasons out of style he’d always worn it well. Not that there was much he didn’t wear well, but this jacket was special. And, unfortunately, it was also torn. According to the tailors in town, it was impossible to fix without the repairs being obvious, and despite his love for the jacket, he begrudgingly came to accept that as soon as he found a replacement, it was going in the garbage.

Finding a replacement was not as easy as he’d expected, though; he’d been to four stores today and was running out of patience. The men’s section was virtually useless, though he had started there. A good look had yielded nothing, so here he was, looking for a very specific cut of jacket he wasn’t sure they even made.

Spirits low, he heaved a heavy sigh as he began combing through the racks.

He was immediately unimpressed with the selection in front of him but there was a woman looking at the more interesting rack and, proper shopping etiquette said he couldn’t intrude on her personal space without being rude. So he waited, trying to keep his eyes on the boring colors in front of him—and not what the woman next to him was pulling out.

Kat needed something new to wear. Or, rather she wanted something new to wear...maybe something that Mags would like. Mags had a hat, a funny hat, like one of the cowboy hats...so maybe she could dress like that too? Or if she could find a shirt with waffles, that would be ideal.

Sadly, this was not a shelf that had any shirts with waffles on them or cowboy hats...all it had was jackets. Lots of jackets.

Slowly the girl pulled out a jacket covered in rhinestones and smelling like fake leather. Did...did people actually wear these things? It looked like something you’d find in a horror story about the nineteen eighties...this jacket and big hair and perhaps some terrible boots.

...She idly assumed Mags would love it and checked the size, slipping her arms into it.

Well...it fit well...maybe she could get it and see if her friend did in fact, like it...because, if she did, it would be worth looking like a fool.

...Maybe.

While criticism was probably not invited, Virell couldn’t help but gasp when he noticed the jacket she was putting on. It was atrocious, and she had to see that. Her haircut was too good for her to have been oblivious to the blight upon humanity that she was currently trying on.

“No,” he said, against his better judgment. Not that he even had judgment; he should have invested in a filter of some sort. “No, you are too pretty to be wearing that thing. Well—Are you going to a costume party or something?”

The only time something like that might be acceptable—that, or if she was starring in a horror movie. The jacket was so gaudy it wouldn’t have surprised him if the eighties hated it so much they had to kick it three and a half decades into the future.

He shook his head; he didn’t seem condescending—only genuinely worried for her. “You can do so much better.”

What.

Kat blinked at this blonde haired….woman man...pretty man? Pretty man. Why was he speaking to her? Did he not understand that Mags might like this jacket? Did that not matter to him? She scowled and took the jacket off, looking at it for a long moment. Finally she looked back at the blonde and her scowl deepened.

“Mags may like it. She dresses funny. She has a hat.”

Clearly that would explain what she was doing wearing it, clearly he would understand. He had to understand.

Finally though...well, she did agree. It was an ugly jacket...really ugly but…

“Fine. Find me something else. Nice. Find me nice.” Hanging the jacket up, Kat crossed her arms over her chest, looking at Virell expectantly.

Virell breathed a sigh of relief when she put the jacket back. He smiled and moved closer. “That should be easy. You have a very pretty face, and very nice hair. Are you shopping for you, or someone else, though?”

He was glad he didn’t have to worry about her—she seemed reasonable if she could acknowledge that the jacket was a terrible investment. But this Mags worried him.

“Specifically, do you have an idea for what you’re looking for, or are you just browsing?”

He had a feeling today would wind up in a fruitless search for himself but, desperate to find the perfect jacket, he could live if it wasn’t his. Maybe he was supposed to be out to help her find hers.

“She likes waffles.”

Maybe there would be a nice waffled jacket that she could find, something with character. Something that smelled like syrup. But something that wasn’t sticky. That would be gross.

After a moment, Kat reached up, touching her hair and shrugged. “My hair is fine. Yours is long. Very long.” And blonde. Blonde was such a pretty color.

“What do you think. I do not mind the looks. I want something…” She paused, trying to think of a strong enough word to convey what she wanted...but, nothing came to mind. “...Fun. Something fun. Fun clothes.”

Fun was close enough to what she was looking for, maybe. Different? “American.”

Virell kept a patient smile as she suggested waffles; he had briefly wondered if there was some sort of language barrier. He did not know of any waffle fashion trends and he supposed she wasn’t looking for a waffle costume.

When she mentioned his long hair, he instinctively reached to brush his fingers over his braid; he was proud of his hair and worked very hard to make sure it was well kept.

“I think we can do that,” he said after a moment. He turned to the rack she was looking at and, when nothing stuck out, he moved to the next one. He fished around for a few seconds before pulling out two different styles, each looking like they might have been her size. He debated between the two of them before handing over the second one he’d picked.

“Try this, let me see it on you.” He had the second one ready in case the first didn’t fit as nicely as he thought it would; it had an asymmetrical cut but seemed tailored to have its own unique, fun little flair. While he waited for her to try it on, he couldn’t help but ask, “So who’s Mags?”

Kat put the jacket on and blinked slowly. Who was Mags? How could he not know Mags. She was far too special not to know. “Mags is my friend.” She moved over to the mirror and tilted her head to the side, looking at the reflection of herself in the jacket. It didn’t look…bad. In fact, she kind of liked it. It was...close to what she wanted.

Nodding, she looked back to Virell, then furrowed her brow, extending a hand. “I am Kat. Who are you?”

Introductions might have been slow coming...but at least they were there...right?

She wasn’t a total loss.

“You like...fashion? You are a fan of clothes…?”

Virell smiled, still nodding approvingly at her in the jacket. “I’m Virell, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Kat.” He gave her a quick handshake before glancing at the other jacket. “You look really good in that. I think your friend will really like it.”

He smiled again. “I do a lot of modeling, so I get to hear people yap about what fashion is ‘in’. I like looking good though, so I suppose you could say I’m a fan of fashion. Clothes, not always. But I am definitely a fan of looking good.”

It sounded vain, he knew it. He’d been told it a million times. But when you met someone, the first thing you noticed was their appearance, and the fastest way to get someone’s attention was by looking good.

Virell was fortunate to have been born with naturally good looks, but he put a lot of time and effort into making sure that any time he went out into public he looked flawless. Looking good was just his armor against the world.

“Interesting.” She had tuned out his words after the first few, she got his name, Virell, and the fact he thought she looked good in the jacket, and he thought Mags would like it. That was more than enough information.

“I will get this jacket. If it looks nice, I will get it. Thank you, Virell.”

Kat ran her hands over the soft leather of the jacket, nodding again as she decided that she really did like it. It was very nice.

“You will help again? Help me look good? Maybe help me get Mags clothes too?”

She shrugged out of the jacket, glancing at the price tag and shrugging slightly, draping it over her arm and sighing. “We will be friends?”

A fresh smile dawned on his face and Virell nodded. Kat had a unique way of speaking and it had quickly grown on him. “I would like that very much, yes. Here,” he said; he reached into his wallet and fished around before he found the card he was looking for. It was a simple thing; his name and a few different methods of contact. “If you ever need someone to go shopping with you, give me a call or text. I get so bored shopping by myself, so I can definitely make time if you want to go out. I know a few good stores, small and out of the way. Really good clothes for really good prices. If you’ve ever got time, I’ll show you.”

He handed the card over, still beaming. She seemed to like the jacket and, even if he hadn’t found one for him, it felt like a successful day. Maybe when he got old and ugly he could help people pick out clothes. The thought fluttered through his head and he instinctively reached up to touch his cheek and sigh.

…No, maybe being a Senshi meant he could skip that part of life.

Taking the card, Kat gave a grin, a real one. A big one. “Okay. Virell. We will do this again, it was fun.” She pocketed the small card and gave a nod. “I will pay. I will call you soon.” Nodding once again, Kat gave the blonde one last smile before walking off towards the front of the store, hoping that maybe this jacket was on sale.

If it wasn’t...well. She could deal with that, but she really did hope that it was, and she hoped that she could see this new friend of hers again sometime soon...he had good fashion advice.

...If only Mags would think that too, that would be ideal. She really, really hoped that Mags was going to like this jacket.
