The church was plain and old, very old. Rodney could taste the tallow of its burning candles, smell the wet of recently cleaned stone floor. Its stone walls were high, filling the rafters with shadows near untouched by the light that filtered through the small windows well above his head. The benches were wooden and plain as the rest of the place. The cross at the end, open and gilded, was the only thing close to ornamentation.

It was a little cold, but the walls held back the worst of the wind outside. There was only one other figure in the church, dark and thin and otherwise indistinct, sitting closest to the little altar.

To Seven, who had been somewhere similar to this in more dreams than it was comfortable with, it felt like home.

Attitudes to religion changed when you knew everything was real, but that man was the Creator, and the old gods were oldest ideas.

Rodney still believed in it, in God and an after, in the things even studies here in magic and science still couldn't quantify, that love was an action, that love...never failed.

Not human love.

Rodney walked down the aisle, and took a seat on a pew on the opposite side, looking at the tall cross (torture, sacrifice) and feeling some comfort.

It was good to be in a church again.

It felt like he'd been gone a long time.

"You've been troubled," the voice is soft and male, but neither young nor old in its tones. From where he sits, Rodney can see the other is not looking at him, but at their hands; he turns them over with a thoughtful gaze.

"Yes," Rodney admitted, also quiet, and relieved by the other's tone. His own hands clenched together, almost in prayer, then let those go limp.

"It's over. He made...a covenant. We both did. But...it only took him a few months to break it. He...he quit. He didn't even try. God...forgave, didn't he? Over and over, but" Rodney trembled, "I can't. I can't, over and over. The...violence, and adultery, and the lies. He said he...wanted to change. But now-"

Rodney pushed at his eyes, which were beginning to water,

"it's back to how it was before. For him, it's like nothing happened, but for me..."

"Forgave?" The figure glanced up toward Rodney for a brief moment, and then turned a wry expression back to his hands. "Not even God forgave easily. It took time, and pain, and cleansing death." He looked up toward the cross before them.

"Forgiveness isn't kind. Nor should it be."

"Y-yes, blood," Rodney admitted.

He slowly rolled up his own sleeves. He had two tattoos that covered each arm. The right had an angel, robed in a garden, holding a lamb and tending to a child. Lilies were at its feet. It had a gentle expression, and the garden around it was warm and inviting.

The left had a devil with a thick pot belly, tongue lolling out between dribbling teeth, a belt of heads at its waist and blood dripping from the sword in its claws. It stood on skulls, phallus erect, war and death and fire pouring out behind it.

"but...judgement...belongs to God, not me. We'll...all be judged, in the end. And...while we're still alive, we use the time they have to ch...change for the better. It's just all..."

Rodney was having a difficult time seeing either tattoo.

"He's my only friend."

"I am, perhaps, behind the times. The transitive nature allowed to mankind once pertained to a singular moment: that of the fallen, allowing themselves to be lifted up."

He turned once more, to take in Rodney's appearance, the arms that cage him in. "You place yourself between those two states."

"It's a long race," Rodney said. "But after, you can only go...to one place. And...everyone has to make it alone."

He looked back over at his companion.

"Are you a Christian?" he asked.

"Oh...no. I suppose I'm closer to the other one. Your devil as it were," he offers Rodney a wan smile and holds up one of his hands, long and slender fingered. They didn't look like Rodney's at all. There was no hard work to be found in abused knuckles and callused whorls. They seemed pale, but for the gilding offered by the tallow candles.

"The crudest light always casts the most gentle glow. It's a sort of magic," another wry smile, "to so easily transform those who draw near."

"A demon?" Rodney asked, softening, looking at the long hands. "Here I suppose being reborn means something different."

Seven had been. Everyone on the island had lost their old lives, and half the island (their partners) had lost their memories too. Still, the phantoms of their old lives lingered. Old hopes, old dreams. Old scars, old sins.

"Were you an angel, once? Do you remember...what it was like?"

"I was," he sighed, "a savior, once. I brought mankind magic and wisdom. I placed protection in their hands so they could defend themselves from an insidious enemy. But such gifts were turned against me, and so I fell. All fallen saviors become the devil, given time. Were you his savior?"

"I'm...sorry it happened that way. That they...that they did that to you. I...can't save anyone. Everyone has to choose their own path. It...it wasn't your responsibility, and...it's not mine either. I probably just...made everything worse. There's something about me that's..."

Rodney covered his face.

"Hateable."

"I don't have use for apologies, " and despite this, his tone was almost apologetic, "they're against my nature."

The figure leaned toward him, bony elbows on thin knees. "What did you do? To be so hated by your own kind?"

"I don't know. I try not to bother anyone. I try to...to disappear, but it's...weakness, maybe, or something...something in me...even when I was younger..."

He looked back up miserably at the figure.

"You...never say sorry? So y-you've...been able to move on? That's...what it's about, I guess. Forgiveness. But...I wouldn't even know where to go."

"You've been mistreated." It was a statement, final.

"I don't require forgiveness and I never, ever forgive. I simply wait, until some form of satisfaction is at hand. There are certain things, in any world, that once received, must be given back in kind. Preferably with interest."

There's a brief pause, and then went on, "Forgiveness doesn't move you past the harm done. Nor does it make those who harmed you a better person. It simply makes them...safe. From retribution. Equilibrium can no longer be met."

He nodded toward the cross before them. "Forgiveness doesn't heal a wound, nor keep others from following."
