Being a Super Senshi was great fun and all—probably. If you knew how to use it.

Caia did not.

Powering up now felt the same as powering up when he was just a Basic Senshi and, while he knew he was stronger, he wasn’t really sure what to do with it. He hadn’t ever really been much of a fighter so the extra strength wasn’t really doing anything for him.

He figured he should have been working harder on confronting evil and trying to convince them to change their ways—or at least dissuade them from pursuing their everyday evil schemes, but he hadn’t really even found anyone from the Negaverse.

It wasn’t that he was disappointed; he should have been happy. The fewer he ran into meant the fewer out on the streets, right?

Which was great, of course, but it meant he was left not knowing what to do.

Caia was traveling through the park when he felt the tingle of an energy signature—a strong one—and perked up. It was order—a Senshi—and that was enough to draw his attention. He picked up his pace and began to weave through the trees to try and reach it before it disappeared.

Before the end, he’d broken into a jog and only tripped once on the way. Small leaves and twigs clung to his clothes and hair; when he popped out of the treeline he blurted, “Hello?” even before he’d seen anyone.

Kallichore had nestled herself under a tree with a good view of the Moon, knowing full well that she couldn’t mask an energy signature from other powered individuals. She could have hidden from the plainclothes criminals that stalked the streets at night, but perhaps seeing her in plain sight would dissuade them, just this once. In her lap sat a well-worn leather journal, into which she was writing from time to time. A thought would come to her, she would pen it, then look up at the moon. It held so many secrets from the past, secrets that she so enjoyed discovering, analyzing, and unraveling.

Her thoughts were disrupted by the sudden appearance of a Super signature on her mental horizon, which was rapidly moving in her direction. Kallichore peered over her shoulder, hearing and sensing the person well before they were seen. Suddenly, a brightly-colored senshi appeared in her peripheral vision. The red they wore was cheerful, even under the dimming blue light of the moon.

She placed the pen in the spine of the book and closed it. “Hello.” came a cool reply, Kallichore tilting her head at the senshi she’s never seen before. “Are you out for a patrol? Or are you looking for someone?” This senshi seemed like they were on a mission, at least from the strength with which they burst through the trees.

Caia blinked and looked around promptly as he tried to identify the source of the voice. It took a moment for him to locate her and he waved. “Just out for patrol, I’m not looking for anyone.”

It took him a second to realize that, tucked into his glove, was a twig and it seemed that only then did he become aware of his bedraggled appearance. “Sorry,” he apologized quickly, trying to brush himself off.

“I think I got a little overexcited. I haven’t seen anyone in a while and you’re such a strong Senshi! I’ve never seen you before.” Which, he noted, probably wasn’t surprising nor did she need him to announce that they were strangers. He didn’t want her to think he was a fool so he approached and extended a hand. “I’m Caia. I’m sorry, I’m a mess. Please don’t think too poorly of me, it’s been a weird week.”

He eyed the journal she held and added an additional apology. “I don’t mean to interrupt you though—I can move on if you’re busy!”

The eternal shook her head and quietly closed the journal, taking Caia's hand and standing before him. Brown eyes seemed to inspect his outfit closely, noting she had not seen this senshi before. So many were awakened now that it was impossible to know of all of them. "There's no need to apologize, Caia." Kallichore had left the journal at the base of the tree, lacking a decent place to keep it otherwise. "Trust me when I say that I know disheveled when I see it. You should have seen me at Super."

A quiet chuckle escaped then. "My name is Kallichore. It's... a pleasure to meet you."

She clasped her hands together and regarded Caia curiously. "...I apologize if I am intimidating. There is no need prostrate yourself like this. Is there something I can help you with, Caia?" There wasn't any excitement in her voice. No, Kallichore was speaking to Caia with a hint of warmth but without excessive energy. She was never known as being particularly friendly in the past, but was working diligently to at least be more approachable and less... ghoulish. "Do you patrol alone frequently?"

Caia smiled and shook the Senshi’s hand gratefully. “You’re not intimidating! I mean, in an insulting way, you aren’t intimidating. You’re—no, what I mean is, you’re striking, but not intimidating. For me, at least! I bet you strike fear in the hearts of Negaverse agents!”

He didn’t seem to be off-put by her somewhat stoic demeanor; rather, it seemed like he wanted to try harder to stay on her good side. He returned his hand to his side and continued brushing out what wrinkles he could.

“I do patrol alone frequently. I have been for a while, but it’s just a little bit easier to do that. I patrol with others regularly, too! But sometimes you just have to go alone—especially when it’s either go alone or don’t go at all. I know it’s safer to go in a group, but I just don’t want to power up one night and someone get seriously hurt because of it, you know?”

She probably knew; she was an eternal Senshi and he doubted she’d gotten there by staying home and not doing anything.

“But, uhm—I don’t know that there’s anything specific you could help me with—unless you had some advice for how to make sure you’re doing the best job you can? I’ve only been a Super Senshi for a little while now, but it sort of got me thinking about—you know, everything. My homeworld, for example. I really only went one time, and…it was cold, and I couldn’t breathe. It felt like I wasn’t wanted there. So,” he twiddled his thumbs suddenly and seemed to be searching for words. “I guess—in your opinion, as an experienced Eternal Senshi—do you think, maybe…it’s possible that it was a mistake that someone got awakened as a Senshi? Like, maybe, their planet might reject them or something…?”

Kallichore seemed unfazed by Caia's complements, simply tilting her head.

"I admire your dedication to the cause. Truly, patrolling alone despite the risks is very brave of you. You don't seem like a person who doesn't understand the severity of the war... I patrol alone frequently myself. It's important to find your reason for patrolling, and hold onto it."

Friends, family, a bid for power, a love for the city... whatever the reason, everyone powered up at night with that thought in their hearts. The reason might change over time, as it did with Kallichore, but one did not simply stop being a knight or a senshi without serious consideration. Power was a blessing in a way, granting those who have it the ability to change the city, night by night. Some people used it for their own selfish gains, some did not, and it wasn't even simple black-and-white matter of Order versus Chaos.

There were so many shades of gray.

She seemed intrigued by something to Caia's left, but still spoke as if she were looking directly at him. "A good job is in the eye of the beholder, really." Linking her fingers together, the eternal senshi thought for a moment. "Do you believe you are doing a good job? And what defines good for you?" The intent wasn't to antagonize the super senshi, but have him closely examine his actions and desires.

Caia's concerns for his homeworld rejecting him caused Kallichore's gaze to lock onto him, curiosity flashing freely across her face. "Rejecting you? That's a very distinctive feeling. As senshi, we are uniquely attuned to our homeworlds. I imagine there must be a reason for this feeling you're experiencing. I can also understand not wanting to return, especially if you couldn't breathe. Could you tell me more about that, Caia?"

The thought that awakening to power was a mistake caused the eternal senshi to shake her head. "No, I firmly believe everything happens for a reason. The universe is a curious, perhaps unknowable thing, but it does not make mistakes. You awoke as a senshi because it was your time to do so. Perhaps there is something you must do that has not yet been done...?"

“Maybe,” Caia agreed, but there was little conviction. “If there was something I needed to do, I wish there was a way to find out. Otherwise I’m going to have to go up there with an oxygen mask and a parka and hope that just one trip is enough.”

He smiled again, either out of habit or because he didn’t know how else to respond to Kallichore. “I don’t really know how much I can say, though. I tried to visit my homeworld and I got there and it was so cold, so windy—it felt like hands around my neck, choking me. I thought I saw something, a vision? A ghost? I don’t know, it was so fleeting, and I was too busy choking to pay much attention. I couldn’t focus, so even if it was real, I have no idea what was going on. I thought I was going to die up there. The cold went right through to my bones. It was sort of instinctive, I just…I knew I had to get out of there. I don’t know if anyone could survive up there and—I mean, if I’m the Senshi…you’d think it might want me there. If I was supposed to be there. So that’s what I meant about things maybe being an accident.”

He shrugged and released a slow breath. “…I don’t think I was the right choice,” he confessed. “I don’t think I’m very good at being a Senshi. I’m not strong or brave or clever. I don’t have any talents that do anyone any good. I don’t think I’ve ever done a ‘good’ job on something. An okay job, at least. I’m pretty good at doing ‘okay’, but…I guess, looking at some of the other Senshi I’ve met, I just sort of….they’re so much greater than I am. There’s something special about them, something that I can see in them. Like, you can just tell that they were meant to do something great. Me, I don’t know. I’m used to being the screw up, or just barely scraping by. I want to do better, I want to live up to the standards they’ve set. I just…it’s a lot to work on, especially with no direction.”

Kallichore didn’t consider herself a warm person by nature, lacking the personable attractiveness she could very easily see in others like Pasiphae or Nepthys. In many ways, Caia, too, was a warm and inviting individual, made more so by his sunny outfit and rather honest disposition. It was heartbreaking and all too familiar to hear of his self-doubt.

“The first time I visited my moon, I was too frightened to return for months.” came an easy reply. It had been so many years since that day, discovering that Derpaline and Albali hadn’t lied about civilizations existing in the past. It was a horrifying and nauseating experience to find the skeletal remains of a small village where people had lived and died happily in the arms of loved ones. “I didn’t have a vision. There was terrible weather, or bone-chilling cold. Simply verifying that life once existed there was enough to scare me off.”

A self-deprecating chuckle escaped her then. “A horrified coward, really. Simply existing was enough to drive me away.”

She nodded as Caia confessed these innermost doubts and worries, things she herself had struggled with mere months ago. Their journeys as senshi were all marred with the scars of turmoil. It simply took perspective to see them as badges of honor.

Kallichore tilted her head, expression more serene than anything else. “Do you suppose you see greatness in others… because it’s easier to look outward than to look within?” She clasped her hands together, regarding Caia with a quiet curiosity. “I, too, saw the greatness in others, and wished desperately to emulate them. I wanted wings like I cannot describe. Ironically, just recently, I was able to meet face-to-face with one of my idols from six years ago - Sailor Scylla. She was magnificent. I was always below her in rank, you see, and looked up to her greatness. In speaking with her, she became more… flawed, more human. Her flaws made her greater in a way, more relatable, less… perfection.”

The eternal shook her head. Maybe she’d wandered off on a tangent. “I suppose, my point is that… greatness is easy to behold in others. It is much less so in ourselves, especially when we believe ourselves to be lost and without purpose. Would you believe me if I told you that it took me six years to find my own purpose? Do you suppose it would ease your mind if someone were to assist you in finding yours?”

Caia was quiet for a long moment as he considered what Kallichore had to say. Eventually, he settled for an uncertain shrug. “I don’t know,” he answered earnestly. “I guess I’ve always thought it was easy to see the good in someone else, but when I look at myself I just see all the things that are wrong. All the things I would change—all the things I could change, if I were a better person. But I don’t see that when I look at other people, just me.”

He pursed his lips and shrugged again, as if such a gesture made it easy to talk about any of this at all.

“So, I don’t know. I have good people in my life, people that I look up to. My brother, he’s a police officer. He’s had everything taken care of and sorted out for years—even when he was in high school, he made his plans and he stuck with them. And now he’s out there and helping people. And—yeah, I think I want to do that. I just don’t know how. So…I don’t know, I think having someone who knew what they were doing, or at least wanted to help, would be great. Especially if they’ve already jumped through all the Senshi hoops and know what it’s all about.”

He looked up again and offered her a quick smile. “No matter how long it took to figure out.”

Kallichore was quiet for a moment, tilting her head at Caia. She seemed to ponder him and what he was saying.

"...I would assist, if you would be so inclined. I must warn you, though. I'm not... the most personable of senshi. Touchy-feely isn't my realm of expertise. But, if you would have me, I will teach you all that you are willing to learn."

Really, this was Sibyl's job in the past - she did her very best to guide the people who sought out her assistance. She opened the will of the universe to them, allowing their own souls and minds to travel to the solution on their own. Sibyl simply oversaw the process. The Kallichore of the present day didn't have such abilities, nor the social graces to navigate that process, but... for Nephthys, and for Caia, she would try.

She seemed uncomfortable for a moment, out of her element, lacking the grace her previous incarnation carried herself with. With a shake of her head, Kallichore attempted to clear those thoughts. She was not Sibyl, nor would she ever be. "If you had all the time in the world, what would you work on first?"

Caia seemed to think for a moment—a long moment. “If I had all the time in the world, I’d want to learn how to be braver. I’d want to learn how to stick to my convictions, even when…even when I disagree with someone I love and trust. I’m a wet noodle, I know it. If someone raises their voice, I clam up. I cave in. I can’t stand people being mad at me, so I just shut up and go with it. I’m not good at standing up for myself at all. But that doesn’t matter—not for me. I want to be stronger, for other people. The people that I know I’m supposed to help. But I’ve just—you know that ‘Fight or Flight’ instinct thing? I’m thinking, you know, maybe it’s not an accident that I’m the Senshi of Cardinals, if you catch my meaning.”

He smiled, but it was brief; he was wriggling his hands thoughtfully.

“But, uhm—I just want to say, if it makes you feel uncomfortable, you don’t have to do anything for me! And you don’t have to worry about not being all touchy-feely. My brother’s a cop, he’s got that tough-guy exterior. All the ‘touchy-feely’ pretty much skipped him so I got an extra dose. But I can try to respect if it makes you feel awkward and try not to do anything too,” he paused to search for a word and settled with, “Friendly, if that would help?”

"I think it's my purpose, Caia." she replied quietly, looking away for a moment, at some distant point to the cardinal senshi's right side. "I spent a great deal of time searching for that purpose, and the universe has revealed it to me. I would be... honored... to assist you, in whatever way I can."

Caia's explanation of having a cop for a brother and being used to that tough-guy exterior seemed to satisfy Kallichore. She simply wasn't emotional and prone to hug people, which gave off a aloof and detached air. That Caia wasn't phased by such a thing was a blessing.

"Overcoming the self-preservation instinct is a difficult thing, Caia. It's built into our DNA - some more so than others. People like us and people like your brother, are in a position where self-preservation may act against us. Naturally, we cannot protect someone if we are injured, or worse..." She tilted her head, thinking almost fondly of Sailor Tsui, whose method was to rush in and pummel whatever the problem was, asking questions later. "...it's a delicate balance, one that can be learned."

Looking up at the cityscape lit by the moon, Kallichore seemed to nod to herself. "Would you mind if I joined you, for the remainder of your patrol?"

A smile grew on Caia’s face; he was nodding before she’d even finished her question. “I’d love the company, Kallichore. You seem really wise. I hope I can learn something from you.”

At the very least, he had the distinct impression that if anything happened, he wouldn’t have to worry. She seemed like a good person to want to have on your side if something was going on-even if she seemed like she had her own reservations.

He was in a good mood but, equating her demeanor to that of his brother (in at least some ways; she seemed even more serious than Jeremy) he tried not to seem too excited.

“Do you think I can learn to overcome self-preservation?” he asked, still doubting it. “I mean, you really think anyone can? I mean, I know I’m not brave. I’m scared of spiders, of the dark, of loud noises. Of totally unreasonable and stupid things. I’m scared of robbers—”

He paused and, though his words had been animated, he looked at her seriously. “Kalli, I am terrified of robbers.” He shook his head, and even though he seemed like he was trying to be serious he couldn’t quite shake the enthusiasm that slipped into all of his words. “…It’s a good thing they don’t have the powers of the Negaverse or I might just die. But that—that's probably not important. But you really do think people can actually overcome cowardice?”

"I hope I have something to teach, Caia."

She tilted her head as he admitted to a fear of spiders, the dark, robbers and loud noises. All relatively normal things for a human being to fear, regardless of gender or occupation. Gloved hands were crossed over her midsection as she regarded Caia curiously. "I am not sure self-preservation can be entirely overcome. Even I still hesitate on occasion. I think that's a natural response. Despite being senshi, we are still human. Aren't the police still afraid? They've firearms and body armor. We do not."

Slowly, the senshi turned to start a very slow and leisurely walk, gesturing for Caia to follow. "...cowardice takes on many different forms, Caia." Kallichore nodded, almost to herself, looking up at the sky with a curious squint. "If I can overcome my own cowardice, I certainly believe you can as well. Your fear of the dark is natural and ingrained in our DNA. Your fear of robbers seems reasonable as well, being that they are typically armed. What do you suppose you could do to take steps towards overcoming these fears?"

The eternal senshi stopped for a moment and turned to look at Caia. "Sometimes it is experience that overcomes a fear, or knowledge. In my case, it was knowledge. Perhaps having someone with you will allow you to feel safer in overcoming your fears?"

Caia followed without hesitation but seemed reluctant to answer. It wasn’t a deliberate pause, only time enough to think about how he wanted to answer. “I don’t know how to overcome them, except that I try to tell myself not to be afraid of them. But my emotions aren’t as strong as my brain, I think. But…”

He shrugged and finally offered a fresh smile. “Having someone with me might definitely make me feel safer in overcoming at least some of those fears. I’m less afraid of the dark, or robbers, when my brother is around—but only because he’s not afraid of those things. Or, if he is…”

He shrugged. “He must have taught himself to be brave. If not for him, then for me.”

Caia’s smile was affection and grateful; he cared greatly for his brother and clearly looked up to him.

“But if I know there’s someone with me, who knows what they’re doing…yeah. I think that would make me feel better. And maybe I could learn to think how they think, to rationalize fears how they do, and how to fight against them. I think I can do that. I mean, I hope I can. I want to try my hardest, is what I mean. And I’m prepared to fail, but not to give up.”
