The good thing about the internet was that if you dug around for long enough, you were guaranteed to find all sorts of interesting things. Leander had found an old website dedicated to local theories and oddities in Destiny City and was pleased to find some information and rumors he hadn’t yet heard before. Naturally, he was elated when the attached email not only worked, but when he got a response from it?

He hoped it was the start of something good.

They’d exchanged a few messages an agreed to meet up at a nearby coffee shop; in exchange for a few minutes of her time and answers to a few questions he was willing to foot the bill for whatever they got while they were there.

He sat at a table away from the lines but near enough that he would still be visible; he wanted privacy but not invisibility—especially since meeting people for the first time was awkward enough when you didn’t know what they looked like. He had a blue notebook out on the table—something he’d mentioned in the email to help her identify him when she arrived—and had already ordered a coffee for himself.

He didn’t want to look too eager, but every time someone entered the coffee shop his eyes lifted to meet them.

Sorry this is late! I hope this is okay, let me know if it needs any changes!

"Notebook on a table... In a coffee shop," Regina muttered to herself as she opened the door, listening to the jangle of the bell above her head before the door clicked shut behind her. In any given coffee shop in Destiny City there was bound to be at least half a dozen people with a notebook on a table, but her contact had said blue.

"Blue notebook on a table." Couldn't it have been something more obvious? Bright blue sweater. Odd looking hat. Anything. Something. Regina glanced around, pausing when she caught sight of a blue notebook sitting neatly on the edge of a table. She approached slowly, hoping that he would remember what she'd said about how to recognize her and give her some sort of a sign that she was headed in the right direction.

I'll be wearing my favorite Legend of Zelda t-shirt; army green with a gold triforce.

"Hello... Is... Uh... Is this seat taken?"

Kyuseisha no Hikari
It's perfect! And I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond.

Leander’s gaze lifted to the woman in front of him and he flashed a smile. “Nope, all yours.”

He gestured for her to take it and extended the hand to shake. “Assuming you’re the one I’m supposed to be meeting here, but you look like you fit the bill. I’m Leander,” he introduced, keen to get to the reason they’d agreed to meet. It wasn’t that he intended to be rude, just that he was excited—and it showed. He had been eager to met her the moment he landed on her website; it wasn’t often you got a juicy new piece of information and he had no intention of wasting this opportunity—or her time.

“It’s nice to meet you, though. I hope it wasn’t too hard to find this place? I figured somewhere public was best—you never know who you’re talking to on the internet,” he shrugged.

If he’d had any concerns she was anyone other than who she said she was, it didn’t seem to show; he was more interested in getting the information than he was interested in who was giving it to him.

"Regi-- Regina, depending on who you ask." Her smile was bright as she reached out to take his hand, giving it a firm shake before taking the seat across from him. You could tell a lot about a person from their handshake and Regina always tried to project an air of professionalism with hers; short and to the point with a steady grip, strong but not too strong.

"Wasn't too hard to find this place at all, honestly. I've been here once or twice before." Cafes and coffee shops made for good meeting places when it came to meeting others dedicated to investigating the number of odd things that happened around the city. Anything open and public was less likely to be a trap.

Less likely to be the Negaverse.

Her brow had furrowed slightly at that train of thought and she hoped that Leander didn't think the expression was something that he had caused, if he even noticed it. She was smiling brightly again within moments, reaching out to snag one of the small, paper menus just to have something to fiddle with. When it came to coffee shop orders she rarely ordered anything different.

"Have you ordered already? If not, would you like anything? Or are we just getting down to business?"

Leander seemed to appreciate her short, firm handshake; he offered a similar one of his own. If she had been hoping to make a good impression with it—it had worked. When they dropped hands, Leander smiled again and adjusted his position and made himself more comfortable. “I’ve got a coffee, but if you want to order something, go ahead. I’d rather you be comfortable before we get talking. I know that sometimes these things can be hard for people—are you all right with answering a few questions on it? I mean, I’d like to hear what happened from you, first. But no rush, whenever you’re ready.”

He smiled again; he was eager but didn’t intend to be rude about it. Opportunities like this didn’t come around very often and he wasn’t going to squander it by chasing her away.

"It was hard when it first happened. Now? With everything else going on in this town?" Her brow lifted briefly as she shook her head before settling into the seat across from him. "I've got a bottle of water in my bag if I need something to drink, otherwise I'm good to get right down to talking."

In all honesty, now that she'd settled down and come to terms with, well... things... she found that she was much more comfortable talking about it all. She could do so without worrying about whether or not a tinfoil hat was a necessity even if things had gotten even more strange. Aliens living in the parks? Sailor Scouts? Knights? The Negaverse.

Yeaaaah... There were some things she still wouldn't be able to talk about, but she could at least do her best to answer whatever questions Leander might have. "Ready whenever you are."

Leander nodded and picked up his pen while flipping to a blank sheet of paper. There were probably more effective ways to take notes but he felt that a tape recorder tended to make people feel like they were under scrutiny and a computer made it seem like you weren’t paying attention to them. He offered one more reassuring smile before he glanced down at the list of questions he’d prepared.

“All right, then let’s begin. I guess the thing I’m most interested in—what happened? The media had a few different stories, but I was wondering what yours was, and what inconsistencies you were most surprised with? If that’s not prying too much. If you’re uncomfortable with anything, please feel free to say so. This is for my own curiosity, I’m not planning on sharing names or information. I just want to understand what happened then, and what's still going on around here.”

"I think some papers tried to cover it by calling it a gas leak that had an effect on the memories of those affected, but you can't really cover disappearances with something like that. If you see any articles along those lines cancel your subscriptions to those papers. We were all taken." She spoke with a confidence she hadn't always possessed, certain that it made her sound crazy at best. The majority of what had happened was still sketchy in her memories, her mind only able to piece together so much of it between panic and the entirely impressionable, gullible young woman she'd been then.

"Everyone that I've met, everyone that I've talked to, seemed to have the same story-- we were taken to a place and no one knows how we got there, but it was beautiful. I imagine it's kind of like the perfect planet in a sci-fi film? Or something like what someone must have imagined heaven was like... I can assume it had something to do with the rest of the weirdness going on, the same sort of things that are still going on." She shook her head, knowing there was only so much she could say on that subject without revealing the information she had on the powered side of things.

"The oddest part, though? I'm pretty sure that each and every one of us, no matter what we experienced, have one memory in common. We weren't just taken. We died."

Leander made a face that clearly expressed disdain; he respected all journalism but couldn’t understand why everyone must have been so willing to accept a gas leak as a viable answer. The honesty at which she spoke was enough to convince him of her truthfulness; he scrutinized every report, every story, but it wasn’t so difficult for him to want to believe in something as much as she seemed to.

And her story only seemed to get more interesting.

He tried to imagine the world which she described, but too many questions popped into his head at the last minute.

“Died?” he repeated, at first incredulously and then again with what almost sounded like reverence. “You, too? Died, I mean. What was that like? What happened, to you?”

Assuming, of course, that wasn’t an incredibly personal question. But who couldn’t help but be curious when someone dropped a bomb like that?
