A bright-eyed young hunter stood at the entrance to the Deathsweeper training course, gazing out at the tiled floor of the cavern. It looked reasonably straightforward. Survive five tiles? Sure, why not. Well... Well. There were those ominous stains on the tiles, but surely they were meant for scaring people away, or something.
More importantly, Mr Brzenczyszczykiewicz had set her a challenge, and Reine was intent on succeeding. Get your runic weapon clearance and we'll talk -- okay then. Challenge accepted.
--
The fact that a golem was needed hadn't struck Reine as being a little.. odd - for all she knew, all the training courses might require them.
Stepping out onto the first tile, she surveyed her options. Would going straight ahead, left or right make much of a difference? Only one way to --
oh no
With her next step, the tile underfoot began to wobble dangerously, throwing her off balance. All of a sudden it flipped over, and she felt the sensation of free-falling in pitch darkness, and then a sudden, sharp, overwhelming pain as the golem was impaled by spikes.
The name 'deathsweeper' made sense now.

A different hunter was on duty at the counter, Reine noted. She was still reeling a little from the intense pain from before, but the sooner she finished this - and there were four more training courses to do - the sooner she could start doing cooler things. What those things were - well, Reine could only guess, because Lucky had seemed so shifty when they spoke, so reluctant to give out any more information other than what he'd mentioned at the meeting. That had, of course, only piqued her interest further. And he was a proper hunter, probably doing all sorts of proper hunter things, and damned if she was going to let a little bit of phantom pain get in the way of that.
After all, it was only a golem that had fallen into the pit with spikes, not her actual body. And if the golems weren't real, how could the pain be real?
--
This time Reine moved faster, leaping onto a particularly clean-looking tile, then straight onto another ahead of it. Mid-jump, a volley of arrows came whistling through the air at her, although mercifully she managed to evade all but two.

Crashing ungracefully onto the tile she'd targeted, Reine struggled a little to pick her golem-self up. Nothing bad was happening yet.
Yet.
Taking a deep breath, she leapt towards the next tile --

-- which she fell clean through. Dazed, Reine flailed around in the air, completely confused - what? Huh? WHAT?
The tile above her was translucent, oddly enough - she could still see the ceiling of the cavern above her. And then it flickered.
Oh. Realization dawned. A hologram.
Seriously?!
A burning sensation engulfed her as the golem fell into acid, stopping her train of thought entirely and re-railing it towards nope nope NOPE NOPE NOPE.
It took a few minutes before Reine could open her eyes again, and even then it seemed like she was seeing stars. Her skin felt raw and tender, although there was no visible sign of damage, and everything hurt. There was even a sour taste in her mouth.

A (reasonably) good night's sleep and a number of chocolate bars later, Reine was back at the deathsweeper training course, her hair tied up in a Serious ponytail instead of the usual two messy braids.
Game on.
In her mind she was already picturing Lucky's face, glowing with awe and some amount of pride, telling her how impressed he was with her tenacity and dedication and that she would make a great hunter, and maybe he would also finally share some of those secrets with her. Offer to take her out on missions.
Yes.
Today would be that day.
--
For the first time, the area ahead of her was surveyed before Reine made her first move. If the previous two attempts had taught her anything it was to actually look where she was going. Sure, some of the trap tiles still seemed virtually indistinguishable from the safe tiles, but others were getting a little easier to pick out.
She picked out a tile and stepped on it.
...
Nothing happened.
Oh yes. A grin spread across her face. Today would be a glorious day.

Overconfident, Reine stepped ahead onto the next tile, only to trigger an explosion that knocked her back.
Right. Look where you're going. Okay.
Shuddering, she peered over the edge of the safe tile to where the explosion had happened. Just a few steps further and she would have fallen down another dark chasm into certain doom.
At least the golem was only slightly singed.

Once again on high alert, Reine scanned the tiles around her. There was some amount of intuition needed, she supposed, for picking out a path - or perhaps just a keen eye that knew what to watch out for.
In her case, intuition would have to suffice.
Grimacing, Reine hopped over one tile diagonally, and hoped for the best.

Focus was making this go much better. It was almost surprising what you could see when you looked out for it - one tile seemed particularly cracked around the edges - no go. One tile looked shinier than the others around it - probably a trap tile, replaced recently.
It would be too easy, of course, to just look out for tiles that looked old, because some of those were traps too - and that was where intuition came back into play.
Skirting a tile with tendrils of smoke curling around it, Reine stepped tentatively onto the one on its left.
Nothing happened.
Safe again!

The end was in sight, finally. Finally!
Of course, the trainee mused, this would be the perfect time to step on a trap tile that cut the golem's head off or mutilated it in some other way. Crouching, she inspected the nearby tiles, before settling on one that looked safe.
It seemed almost too good to be true when yet again, nothing happened, not even when she jumped up and down experimentally.
SUCCESS!
One training course down. Only four to go!
