After a rather nerve wracking experience running (literally) multiple times into a scary looking Russian man named Kavinsky, Yuuri was perfectly content with never ever seeing the man again. He was surprised that he even managed to get out of that situation unscathed. At least physically. He’d been left shaking and slumped against the building wall for several minutes before he’d been able to push himself away to head back to his dorm.

Unfortunately, fate was not that kind.

Yuuri hadn’t even been in a rush. And he’d been watching where he was going, really! Maybe he was paying a little too close to everything, because the sound of someone dropping and shattering a mug onto the floor of the café he was leaving was enough to make him jump, and he turned around to exit the little store just as another person was walking in, causing him to spill his hot coffee (thankfully) mostly on himself, but on the other as well.

“I am so, so sor- “ Yuuri started after letting out a small cry of distress, the coffee dripping from his hands and down his jacket, but the moment he looked up to see the person he’d run into, his heart shuddered to a stop and his face paled as he gaped wordlessly.

It was the same man as before. The angry Russian who’d cornered him and almost witnessed him having a complete panic attack. Which might very well be something he was about to have now. Even if he tried to run, there was nowhere he could go.

Today had started off as a good day.

There had been lots of work in the shop which meant that while he had gone in stupidly early, he would walk out with a decently sized paycheck, which meant that maybe finances wouldn't be so tough this month. Plus, getting to do mechanical work was one of the few things that brought joy to the general stoic Russian man.

He'd even picked up a few simple delivery jobs that took virtually no time at all and happened to all be along the same route, which made things easy.

Things were going well enough that Kavinsky had decided that it was okay to splurge just a bit and reward himself with an espresso layered beverage. Unfortunately for him, the moment he walked in disaster ensued and, well, hot coffee splashed onto his white shirt. The offending party would be lucky that it hadn't gotten on the jean jacket and hoodie combo or else his generally sour expression would have taken a turn for the worst.

"черт возьми," he cursed before he remember who he was cursing at and that the boy knew russian. "Of course it's you." He simply scowled more deeply as he looked Yuuri up and down then looked at his ruined shirt. "Where the hell do you keep coming from?"

Truly, their situation baffled him and he grabbed at the dark haired man's collar, intending to drag him up to the counter with him. "If you stay with me, you won't cause problems," he declared as if things could be so simple.

Yuuri couldn’t help but flinch when the man cursed at him in Russian, unable to stop the reaction. Nor was he able to stop the startled squeak that escaped when a hand reached out and grabbed onto his collar, Yuuri shrinking back as much as he could without just pooling onto the floor in distress.

"W-wait, I… - " he sputtered and fidgeted, but didn’t fight as he was dragged across the café to the counter, his hands still dripping with coffee and he glanced back to see the mess he’d made.

"I’m s-sorry," he blubbered to the barista who looked somewhat harassed about the idea of having to clean up the spill. "I – I can get napkins. And clean it up," he quickly promised, although it was a little difficult to do anything when the angry Russian was holding onto the collar of his shirt. He didn’t want to try and tug away for fear of having his shirt damaged more than it already was with the coffee stain, and he also didn’t want to prompt the man to try and punch him or something crazy like that.

"L-let me pay for you at least," he just as quickly offered, still not entirely sure what to do with his hands until he got a napkin to clean himself up, but he could at least try to dig out his wallet then. "A-and I can pay to replace your shirt." It was the least he could do.

It appeared that his troublesome companion was no less meek than he had been the last time. Irritation was evident in Kavinsky's face, which was unsurprising considering it's resting face was quite mean looking, when he felt like he had to hold the other man up to keep him from sinking into a pooling mess on the coffee shop floor.

"Stop acting like a limp noodle," he snapped, gray eyes flicking to the person behind the counter who looked concerned, then worried when Kavinsky's irritation turned towards them instead. When he heard Yuuri offering to help, he yanked him closer. "No. You are staying right here, before you cause any more problems."

Already, K could see Yuuri making an even bigger mess in his haste to clean things up and stop being a problem. "For ******** sake, Yuuri." The Russian hadn't forgotten the meek boy's name. "Pull yourself ********." His gaze flicked to the coffee stain on the boy's shirt and the wallet in his hand.

He really couldn't afford to be replacing his shirts as often as Yuuri appeared to be apt at ruining them, not when half his stuff was in a limbo state at Isaiah's. "Fine." He let go of the collar only to press his hand against Yuuri's back and pushed him forward. "Americano, black." He said expectantly before it was Yuuri's turn to order.

Blunt nails scraped across the fabric of his shirt, ready to grab if the boy tried to run off.

Yuuri squeaked in distress, shrinking away from the taller man when he snapped at him, his face flushed with embarrassment for being in that situation in the first place, and not knowing how to get out of it. He flinched again when Kavinsky cursed at him and called him by his name, obviously remembering from last time.

He was trying not to completely freak out, stumbling forward into the counter as he was pushed, his hands trembling as he fidgeted with his wallet, trying to keep himself from panicking.

It wasn’t really working. He could feel the way the man had his fingers against his back, as though ready to grab him and keep him there. Well, it had been Yuuri’s fault for not paying attention, but he didn’t know if the harsh, gruff way the other man was speaking to him and handling him was entirely necessary.

Well, he wasn’t wrong in that Yuuri would have tried to run if given the chance.

He blinked back tears as he fumbled and dropped the wallet and his card onto the counter, and knocked over one of the fancy gift card displays in his attempt to grab his things.

"J-just plain coffee," he tried not to whimper, furiously nodding his head when the barista asked if he was okay, as she then side eyed the taller, scarier man behind him.

Finally he was able to get the card handed over, and tried to scoop up the gift cards, but the lady at the register insisted it was okay and not to worry about it.

Now if he could just disappear into nothing that would be great.

Kavinsky didn't know how someone like Yuuri functioned in the day to day world when everything seemed to make him jumpy or frightened.

Sure, he could be terrifying to be around, with his resting face meaner that most people's mean looks but there had to be some sort of pre-existing thing that had made the dark haired man the way he was. Everything he did made it seem like he was on edge, frightened that some sort of bogeyman would appear and drag him to his doom. Even Ellis wasn't as anxious as this and K was sure he was one day going to give the man a heart attack.

When the barista side eyed him, he looked back at her unimpressed, expression neutral. It didn't worry him, because looks never unnerved him.

Once things were paid for and his skittish companion was stumbling to pick up the gift cards, K sighed, and nudged him with the expectation he would shift over. "Stop." The word was gruff as everything that left K's mouth was, but it was as sharp, biting as the rest of his words usually were. Keeping himself in close proximity to the other man, he cleaned up the spilled gift cards and returned them to their proper place.

Then, he looked at the dark haired quivering mess of a man and nodded his head towards the hand-off plane. "Move." That way they'd at least be out of the way.

"Jesus, Yuuri. How the ******** do you function everyday?"

He froze as he was told to stop, his face paling even more than it already was, and made an awkward side step to get out of the way. As Kavinsky cleaned up the mess Yuuri had made, he tried to keep his heart from beating out of his chest. He grasped at the front of his sweater, fingers digging into the fabric over his heart as if physically trying to keep it in place and to calm down.

It wasn’t working very well and he held his breath to try and stop from looking like he was on the verge of hyperventilating. Which he was.

Dizzily, he stumbled in the direction he was shoved, gripping tightly now to both his sweater and held his wallet to his chest. Kavinsky had every right to be angry with him. Yuuri had ruined the other man’s clothing because he was being careless.

"I don’t know," he mumbled quietly, flinching back as the man spoke to him, trying not to make a scene but he’d already spilled coffee everywhere and knocked over things and now he was trying not to have a complete panic attack while being pushed around by a very angry, large man.

"I’m sorry. I - don’t know." It was better to just admit that he was helpless and dumb because that was how most things circled back when he was the topic of discussion.

Now if he could just not completely break down in front of everyone that would be great too.

The gesture over Yuuri's heart reminded him of the way Ellis smoothed fingers over his chest whenever he was feeling to anxious and something, briefly, softened in the way he looked at his hostage companion. "Are you having an attack right now?" Kavinsky couldn't differentiate between panic or anxiety attacks but it was hard to miss a sign like that.

It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the cause (him) of the dark haired man's stress, but it proved to be no less irritating. Yuuri wasn't Ellis though and his best friend was probably the only one he could be kind to and even then, it wasn't something that happened often.

Still, he huffed a breath and reached out to smooth out the white of his brows with his thumb and middle finger. He mumbled something inaudible in Russian beneath his breath while he was trying to decide how to continue to handle the man who couldn't not make a scene if he tried. "Stop apologizing." How many times had he said sorry already?

Too many times and it was giving him a headache.

"You keep saying you don't know. What do you know?"

It wasn’t often that anyone noticed the signs of him having an attack until he was in actual need of medical attention. This happened less frequently these days, as Yuuri was usually able to get himself to calm down, or just wasn’t around people for it to make a difference. If he was asked what type of attack he was having, even he wouldn’t be sure. He’d never been officially diagnosed, although the doctors he’d seen at the clinics he’d been to often suggested that he see someone about it.

Instead, once he was calmed again, he would explain that he was just overreacting and seeking attention, as was his family’s excuse whenever he got like this in their presence. They would roll their eyes and brush him off and apologize to those who unfortunately had to witness Yuuri and one of his tantrums, as they called it.

So when Kavinsky asked, Yuuri couldn’t help his eyes widening in surprise, and he glanced curiously up at the Russian for a moment, before nodding his head a couple times, his fingers digging tighter into the fabric of his sweater.

“I’m sorry,” he mumbled out of instinct when told not to apologize, and immediately flinched back because he’d just done something he was told not to. He bit his lip hard against apologizing again, trying instead to keep his heart from beating out of his chest.

“Nothing. I know nothing,” he said quietly through silent attempts at drawing in air to his lungs, focusing on that instead of how he was wasting Kavinsky’s time and energy and patience and, well, Yuuri felt bad about all of it.

He barely restrained himself from apologizing again.

Yuuri's affirmation of Kavinsky's assessment earned a heavy sigh from the Russian. Ellis suffered from them enough, often a result of his abrasiveness, that he recognized the basic signs easily. K's tongue slid across his teeth, pushing against his cheek as he debated his next action. It was easy to be dismissive, to gather his drink and leave the human disaster that was his meek companion, but something about his responses only served to irritate the taller man.

"Stop focusing on everything else," he barked, his intention to be helpful but possibly making things worse. Even now the gears in his brain were turning, trying to remember how his best friend handled his attacks.

Most of the time, Kavinsky left him, unable to deal with the anxiety that he was contributing to when he was in his fouler moods. He was the farthest thing from a teddy bear, no matter whom he was with, after all. Ditching the dark haired man was the simplest of the choices he had, but a barista, the same one who had been eyeing them, called out their drinks and he nodded his head towards the hand-off plane.

"You must know something," he said, voice still rough but tone softer, quieter so that his words were only for Yuuri and anyone that was actively listening in, though they would have to strain to hear him. Pinching the bridge of his nose he sighed. "Come on, get your drink. We're leaving."

He was okay. It was fine. He just needed to breathe and not offend anyone else and get out of that coffee shop. It didn’t help that the shop itself was pretty small, and felt cramped, and claustrophobic. Or maybe that was just him being dramatic.

Yuuri stared up at the white haired man in surprise when he was told to get his drink so they could leave. Did that mean Kavinsky wanted to deal with him outside and away from prying eyes? He didn’t seem like he wanted to beat him up. Not entirely at least, but enough. He looked like he was irritated, and Yuuri knew it was probably him that caused the irritation.

Just like it was Kavinsky that helped fuel Yuuri’s anxiety.

Doing as he was told, Yuuri carefully scooped up the cup of coffee and muttered a few more apologies and thanks to the barista, and then turned to head for the door.

And for some reason, against his better judgement, as soon as they were out of the cafe and away from so many people, Yuuri turned to Kavinsky with a mumbled, “Спасибо.”

He knew he should probably keep to himself, but he wasn’t stupid. He could hear the softer note in Kavinsky’s voice, even if it was still obvious that he was annoyed.

With his cup in hand Kavinsky led them out, going far enough to hold the door open until they were both out on the street. He only moved, keeping some distance between them, to step out of the way of anyone trying to get around them. For a long moment he stood there in silence, watching the brunet.

A shake of his head and something that resembled a sigh later, he was pushing calloused hands through the thick white stock of his hair.

"Can you breathe better now?" He asked, though he didn't know why he was bothering. Maybe it was because he saw shades of Ellis and his panic attacks in the man. Maybe it was because he knew how intimidating he came off and Yuuri had told him Спасибо in spite of everything.

Maybe he felt guilty. Maybe he didn't, it was hard to say. As always, Pietro Vladmir Illya Ivan Kavinsky was an enigma.

"You apologize too much and thank people for the wrong things. If you are having an attack, leave." He said abruptly, breaking the silence that had settled over them. For him, it was not uncomfortable, but he suspected that everything made the man slightly uncomfortable. "Subjecting yourself to something because you are afraid of the reaction of others is stupid."

One hand holding the cup of coffee, the other hand clutched tightly to the front of his sweater, Yuuri walked quietly beside the much larger man, feeling pathetic for causing so many people problems.

Even though Kavinsky was obviously trying to make sure Yuuri was okay, which was such a strange concept especially from someone Yuuri had bothered multiple times, he still couldn’t help but jump a little when the words left the other’s mouth.

Silence didn’t bother him, which was probably why he had such a difficult time meeting people, and an even more difficult time making friends. It was talking that bothered him, because he never really knew what to say or what to do.

“I can breathe, yes. Thank you,” he said in English this time, feeling heat in his cheeks when he was practically scolded for being polite. Or at least what he thought was being polite. Maybe saying it too much was more insulting than he realized here.

“I didn’t know what else to do,” Yuuri admitted quietly, glancing curiously at the man beside him. He didn’t seem as though he was getting ready to beat him up at least, and that was good.

“I’m sorry for causing you trouble again,” he added with a grimace, wondering how the heck he kept running into the same person and making their life miserable with no intention of doing so. "I'd say I'd like to make it up to you, but I might make things worse if I tried."

Silver eyes were narrowed as he looked at Yuuri and it was clear that the Russian was contemplating something. What it was, could not be said. He listened, with his whole body tense and rigid as it had been for most of their time near each other.

It was merely the way the boy carried himself, as if he was always filled with bristling irritation. Or maybe he was merely prepared for some unseen fight resting around the corner. Either way, there was a chip in his shoulder and that was plain as day for anyone to see if they looked at him.

"You are no good to anyone if you force yourself to stay in situations that only cause you more stress." He knew that Yuuri sticking around him was a clear example of this. "Attacks are a sign you need room to breathe, you cannot do so if stay with the thing stealing your breath." It was something he learned from Ellis.

More often than not his friend would not leave him and he would have to do so, returning only when he knew the man was capable of breathing without risking another attack.

"Worry about yourself, instead of others." He barked, almost dismissively. "You cause less trouble that way."

Yuuri lowered his gaze once more at the other man’s words, his hands clasped tightly together around his cup. He didn’t want to admit the truth out loud; that he wasn’t any good to anyone regardless of the situation he was in.

He was a pain for a lot of people. His family had no use for him, the acquaintances he made quickly tired of him after his decline to partake in social activities one too many times. It was only a matter of time before his boyfriend would get tired of him. And only a matter of time before his General decided he no longer held any value, save for the starseed he housed.

But, as he’d been told many times before, feeling sorry for himself was the only thing he was good for. And that no one cared, nor did they want to hear his troubles.

Yuuri flinched as Kavinsky barked, although he couldn’t tell if it was at him, or if that was just the way the other spoke.

“Yes, of course. Less trouble…” he mumbled, his hand having lifted to press against his chest, his eyes still lowered. Somehow he doubted worrying about himself was going to make things less troublesome for others. He liked to think he was considerate and put others before himself, which meant he could hide easier. Be invisible. But he wasn’t about to tell Kavinsky that.

“I’ll keep that in mind. Hopefully you won’t have to be bothered by me again,” he promised, ducking his head in a small bow. He should leave before he wasted the other’s time any longer.
