Mnyiri missed Jauhar.

Although Yael's fauna held many of the same properties that her homeland carried it wasn't home. The night's were colder here, with far less edible plants dripping from every branch. Over all the lack of color was...depressing, at best, and the near darkness at night was disturbing. Mnyiri was used to sleeping by the light of Jauhar's fungi, but now...

...now she made due without.

She sat huddled in the only cave for miles, legs pulled up to her chest with the smallest fire imaginable gasping for air in front of her. The outside world was in turmoil; a flat downpour had halted all attempts at travel, so Mnyiri had guided Mvua to shelter, and there they remained.

The radaku was presently curled up at her side, supposedly asleep though she couldn't be sure. Mnyiri didn't care; she huddled closer to the fire, pressing her body against Mvua in turn to keep warm. She couldn't stop the chills that racked through her body, and feared that taking off her wet clothes would only make her colder, with the piss poor embers, so Mnyiri stayed as she was, hoping for the rain to stop.

What a miserable day.

Kieran pursed his lips in frustration as he glanced up towards the gray skies. Soon enough fat drops of rain began to pelt the ground around him and then eventually even hit him in the face, "I guess we'll have to stop here." Commented the Yaeli before pulling a hood over his head. So much for covering a lot of ground while he was still in Yael.

Sighing, Kieran began to glance over the landscape before pausing. Once before a long time ago he had mapped parts of this area...wasn't there some small cave nearby? Of course his excitement to find some shelter faded as the man noticed some smoke as he got close to the cave. Grabbing his whip the Yaeli slowly crouched before moving forward, but he paused as he studied the figure who seemed pretty miserable. Her shaking was so obvious that even he could notice them. Frowning, Kieran moved his hood so that he could see better before taking a few more steps towards the cave and away from the rain. "Hello?" His voice was wary, but despite his desire to grab a weapon or stand tall the man tried his best to seem somewhat friendly.

Mvua was the first to react. He raised his head and snarled a warning, trying to scare the intruder away from his den. Mnyiri was less antagonistic; she lifted her head, having falling into a sort of half awake, half asleep state and blinked herself to full consciousness.

"H-hi?" She was a little shaky, but mostly curious. Was it a yaeli come to- Idiot! It's another elaria! Mnyiri squeaked and scooted away from the fire towards the back of the cave, scrambling in the dark for her spear. "B-be warned, I'm armed!...where the hell is that stupid thing...?"

She knocked over several tomes before finally setting back with a sigh. The truth was with her abysmal light there was no way she would find the damn thing.

Kieran almost laughed at the sight of the scrambling alkidike. Before going to the mainland the Yaeli may have taken the chance to slit the woman's throat, but now he was more reasonable. It also helped that she had a beast to protect her while she did flail about. The last thing the man wanted was to survive the mainland only to come back home and then have his throat torn out by some creature.

"I'm not here to fight." Kieran finally commented as he heard the sigh, "Now if you could get your radaku to calm down I would gladly step further inside to get out of this damn rain." The Yaeli moved his hood to reveal his face, "Unless you're one of those living in that cursed encampment with those new children then I have no need to attack you, Alk." The beast tamer reached up to touch the keldari who hissed softly towards the radaku, "Shh, Aia." Kieran smiled as the keldari slithered along his arms and allowed him to cradle her, "Seems neither of us checked the clouds before heading out today." He commented loosely before daring to take another step forward.

Surely if the woman had been one of those 'demons' then she wouldn't have seemed so threatened by his appearance. Which brought him even more questions - what was another Alkidike doing out here in Yael? Never before had he seen one leave the mainland to explore the prison that their sisters lived in. It was strange indeed.

Mnyiri sat back on her knees with her head tilted up to the ceiling and let out a long, drawn out sigh. She was too cold for this, too tired to possibly find the damn thing in this darkness let alone fight with it.

When he spoke she stilled and made a half turn, placing the flat of her palm against the cave floor to help her balance. He knew what Mvua was, which was more than most on this island, and if he wasn't here to fight....well, she assumed he could be lying, but honestly she didn't think he'd survive Mvua if he decided to turn violent.

She whistled thrice in a particular pattern of pitches, and the radaku immediately pulled back. His hard, golden eyes was still trained on Kieran but he moved closer to his mistress and sat at her side.

"Come on in. I won't attack you so long as you don't strike me first. I'm not one of them; though I am here to study them."
Mnyiri shuffled her way around the little fire, moving as much of her things out of the way as possible to give him a space to sit. If anything she just made a larger clutter pile, further hiding her spear from her grasp, but at this point she didn't much care. She just wanted to get back to the fire.

"It's a little hard to be picky about traveling weather when you don't have any place to stay if you do get caught up in it."
She scootched closer to the flames, drawing her knees back up to her chest so that she could wrap her arms around them, leaning forward just enough to rest her chin against her leg. "What are you doing out here? Most of your kind don't come this close to the elaria's camp."

"Sounds like a foolish study to me." Replied Kieran as he ventured closer, "But you're alive so far, so I wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of knowledge. If you've learned anything of interest and feel open to sharing then I wouldn't mind having some information about them myself." The Yaeli shrugged his soaked cloak from his shoulders so that he could be more at ease inside the cave. Others may have called him a fool or been in disbelief at how calm he was around an Alkidike, but after meeting less violent ones on the mainland his whole perception of the race had shifted.

"Do you mind?" He nodded towards the fire before getting close enough to catch its warmth as well, "And you do have a good point though strange to travel to Yael. Not the most comfortable place for your kind after all." He quipped back in turn to her own question, "I'm not like most of my kind, as you can probably tell. I explore and take notes on unfamiliar areas and...species as well I suppose. I've been to the mainland and back so I figured I may try venturing close to these vipers as well. Not too close mind you since they really don't like my race either."

"Yea, I guess it kind of does." She rubbed her fingers together, using the friction to bring warmth to her chilled digits before raising them towards her antennae. Mnyiri smoothed her warmed palms up and down the length of them, delighting when it didn't feel as if they were ready to pop off at any moment.

"If I make it out alive I'll be sure to look you up." She smiled his way, moving her hands back down to wrap around her knees. "The name's Mnyiri; just so, you know, if they find my body in a ditch someone will at least know what to call me instead of it."

For a moment her tired brain didn't quite catch his meaning, until he started to move closer to the fire and she squeaked, motioning him closer. "Sorry, sorry! Yes, of course, come and get warm. It's small but it's something." True, her cave was small and cramped, now that she was sharing it, but at least they were dry. The fire didn't have nearly enough firewood to last through the night, but Mnyiri hoped that the shower would stop long before then.

"Oh, oh, so you're a researcher as well? So am I! I would show you my notes, but it's too dark here, too much strain on the eyes." She gesticulated towards her own darkened eyes before looking around, as if she were going to pull up a book even after saying she wasn't. "I think that, if I wasn't born alkidike, I may have taken up healing because anatomy is so fascinating to me. I've been studying your kind recently, from a far mind you, this is my first time to Yael, but I thought; well, Mnyiri, if you're going to Yael you may as well study the elarian too, and here I am!"

Kieran watched the woman with interest. Out of all the races he had interacted with the Alkidike were the strangest by far. Not in a bad way, just in a very unique aspect considering their appearances, breeding, and their religion. It was strange to think of how so many cultures lived so close together yet each were different in many ways. I don't think I could ever call a tree mother, either. He noted silently as he settled into place.

"It would be appreciated. If you ever need as well I can offer you a place for a bit since I know the rest of Yael isn't so open to Alkidikes. In case you need a better shelter once the rains stop the offer begins whenever." He glanced about the small cave with a sly smile, "Though my home isn't the most traditional place either and actually is underground like this, but a bit more extensive." He shook his head at her poor joke, "Hopefully that's not the case, but I'll remember that Mnyiri. My name is Kieran if you ever happen to be looking around and needing someone familiar. Feel free to ask for me by vendors in the cities, I trade artifacts and other rare pieces so they'll know of me."

Kieran nodded and smiled at her enthusiasm, "Yes, yes. Ah, I heard that Alkidikes are limited in occupations. It's kill, kill, or kill, no?" He flushed lightly before shaking his head, "I apologize that joke was in bad taste, but I do understand that your race are proud warriors. Still I am surprised that there are no need for healers in their ranks. Do you naturally heal better than earthlings or is there simply no need as everyone knows a bit of something?"

"That would be wonderful. I didn't think it would be this hard to get a room here; I mean, I should have, but I didn't. " She had just assumed that Yael would be like most places on the mainland; wary of her, but ready to take the coin she offered. What she hadn't expected were the yaeli to be as standoffish and skittish as they were; she'd heard the rumors, of course, but to have them all be that way....?

She reached out in the space between them and flicked his shoulder. "It was in bad taste. Both of my mothers were killed by earthlings, but they weren't killers themselves, so yeah, flip flopped ya buddy." Just because they were all trained warriors that didn't mean that's all they did. She certainly didn't enjoy war; she just wanted to be prepared to defend her home should it ever break out.

"Our elders take care of it, mostly. A lot of your earthling occupations are done by our elders, actually. Others take them on from time to time as hobbies, but we don't dedicate as much time to them as your kind."

Kieran couldn't help but chuckle, "It's understandable, the atmosphere is still a bit backwards here even after everything that has happened. It was hard for me as well when I visited Oba for the first time." How long ago had that been now? Two years? Three? It seemed just like yesterday yet was so long ago. The yaeli shook his head at the nostalgia, "Either way I'm not like most on this island, never was one for scary stories and spirits." Too inquisitive to simply listen to what the Sanctum preached and the old wives' tales.

Blinking in surprise at the flick the Yaeli studied the alkidike. She was far different from any of the sisters he had met before, but it was rather refreshing. "Ah, then I was truly in the wrong." He bowed his head in apology, "It seems we both lost someone dear then in a rather tragic way." Kieran shrugged his shoulders, "But here we are an earthling and an Alkidike sharing a cave together." He tried teasing to lighten up the atmosphere a bit, "What a twist".

"So I see. I suppose battle is that important to your kind then." The man pushed his glasses up on his nose thoughtfully, "The Yaeli are the opposite in a sense. None of our leaders dare to even think of touching a blade and instead pray for peace and teach kindness." His brow furrowed in thought, "A shame really since it leaves them weak to any attack, they're fortunate that fighters live in the city outside the Sanctum to protect them." Kieran leaned back against the cool wall.

After a pause he stared towards the outside. The rain was still pouring down, "Seems like it may be a bit before we can even leave here, but once we do I can gladly take you on the path that leads to my home."

"But your peoples stories are the best! I don't know if they really believe half of them or not, but some of the best story tellers I've heard were Yaeli. You guys really have a flare for the dramatic. There was this old woman on the docks when we got off, who went into this retelling of the ancient legend of...oh what was his- IGNIS, his name was Ignis, some kind of warrior who rode a Limbara into battle and while he was super tough he was too slow and all his friends died."

She'd honestly tried to write down as many of the old tales as the elder had allowed her too, but once the old woman saw that Mnyiri was listening, instead of fleeing or whatever she was supposed to do, she'd chased her off with a cane.

"My best friends are earthlings. I haven't seen them in ages, but I love them both like sisters so I'm hoping we can get together again soon."
She wanted them to get to know Kida, so that her girlfriend and her friends would get along. She wanted to know how Nadiya's music was going and if Rho had ever regained her memories...There just wasn't enough time in the day. "I'm not...typical, for my kind. Most of us are still pretty closed off to earthlings, but I'm not exactly pure so I'm more flexible."

She stretched out a little, having regained enough warmth not to be a constantly shivering mess. "That sounds nice. Say, you wouldn't happen to have anything to eat with you, would ya? I could really go for a snack."

Kieran could only pinch the bridge of his nose before shaking his head in amusement, "Dramatic yes, but scary enough they believe in it." His lips twitched upwards into a small smile, "Not all believe in it, but you would be surprised by how easily the populace will move for any superstition." Kieran leaned against the back of the cavern wall and wrapped his arms around his knees, "Even during my time on the mainland I never saw anything to match it."

Kieran raised a brow in interest, "That's rather interesting to hear, but good. I hope you can meet up with them." The Yaeli rested his head against the wall, "That would make sense then...is that why your hair appears to be different? I wasn't certain if the Alks had different haircolors or if that was a unique feature." He moved his head so that he could gaze at her, "Other than that I would never have even guessed."

At the question Kieran blinked thoughtfully, "Food.....I think..." He shifted so that he could dig through the satchel he had at his side, "Not much unfortunately but something. Here." The man reached over some dried meat and what was left of a loaf of bread, "Hopefully that will suffice for now. When we arrive at my home later I can prepare a true meal for you." No one needed to go hungry after all.

"Yeah, I'm a hybrid." Mnyiri plucked at a stray dread that had fallen over her shoulder. She pulled it up to examine it in the mild light, twisting the hair around her fingers with a musing sort of look. "I have a grandfather, which isn't something a lot of my sisters can say. He was some shifter who thought he wanted a family with my grandma, turns out he didn't and he bailed. I've never met him, don't even know his name, but I've got this-" She waggled the dread in front of her. "-so that has to count for something."

It was something she'd dyed when she was younger, but now that she was older Mnyiri didn't see the point. They were going to find something to pick at no matter what she did and she liked her hair better the way it was.

She took his offering with excited, though grateful, fingers and didn't waste time digging in. The dried meat was tough, as was par for the course, but it wasn't her first time eating such a meal. She ripped into it, taking chunks at a time. When she'd had enough to remember that manners existed she sat the remains down atop her thighs and smiled. "Sorry; it's just...what kind of meat is this? It's a little sweet."

"Sounds like an a**." Kieran quipped before flushing lightly, "I apologize...I suppose I'm rather protective of the idea of family lately." The yaeli coughed into his hand, "But yes I would definitely say that does count for something and honestly it's rather fitting as it looks nice." He shrugged, "Outsider's perspective of course."

"I won't lie to you...I'm no hunter so it was something bought in the city. They sold it as aracala meat." He replied lightly, "Though I can't guarantee it since the stall keeper looked more the sort to raise normal cattle than anything else. Is sweet bad? I thought it was decent enough..." He pursed his lips thoughtfully. Not that he really cared about meat while traveling. It was a bad habit he had picked up while spending days in the wilderness....never much of one for taking care of himself until lately really.

Mnyiri laughed. "Yeah, pretty much. My grandmother was always pretty open about stuff, and she was a sweet woman, but she hated him until she died. I don't know how all that went down, but to get under her skin like that...." She shook her head. Mnyiri could only imagine what that poor woman must have gone through.

"I'm not familiar with an aracala. What exactly is it?" She asked it vaguely, unsure if even he himself knew. "No, no, it's good, I was just curious. Usually after drying and curing the meat it all sort of tastes the same. Generally if it has a distinct flavor then someones done something to it and I was wondering what."

She'd certainly had enough strange meats in her lifetime to know that much. Matori meats, Oban meats, Yael meats, Jauhar meats....all she hadn't tried as of yet were the northern stuff, but Mnyiri didn't want to go that far. She wasn't big into the colder weather.

"So...what was your favorite place on the mainland? You said you went there,
right?"
