Katrina had somehow assumed that spending the most important day of the year with her best friend had fixed things between them-- That a night out together with a bad movie, followed by a good movie, dinner and a 'girl's night' had been enough to close the rift that had started to form between them as they'd suffered apart instead of together. Her usual way of dealing with things (running away from them) wasn't helping in this situation which left her secondary way of dealing with things: facing them head on.

She was strolling through the city's main park with her hands tucked into her pockets. With the sun having set hours ago the air was starting to cool, a light breeze making things seem just a bit colder. Prissy had picked up an extra shift at the Cube that night and they'd agreed to meet here afterwards. Prissy had been picking up a lot of shifts at the Cube lately and she assumed it had something to do with why she was also spending an unhealthy amount of time moping and dragging her feet around the mansion. Something had to be done about it. Friends didn't let friends mope alone.

Sighing, Katrina pulled her phone out of her pocket, checking to see if she'd gotten any messages from Priscilla. It was always a hope that her friend-- Best and only real friend-- would let her know if she was running late, if closing had been hell, if she'd just decided not to come at all... Wouldn't she?

She had been running late, but Priscilla Stratford wasn't concerned about delaying her friend. Not when she had the easiest form of transportation available to her: teleporting.

The storage room in the back of the cafe had proven to be a useful place, if any, for her nearly nightly transformations. She preferred either opening or closing - either option allowed her to be alone in the store, which set the perfect stage for stealthy entrances. With her car being repossessed and Uber costs amounting on top of each other, teleporting had been a quick and easy route to take, as opposed to paying other people to cart her around the city.

Taking a deep breath, the young woman slipped her henshin pen out from her purse. She knew that she probably shouldn't be abusing her powers like that, but it seemed almost a waste not to take advantage of the opportunity. In a matter of moments, the cafe worker had disappeared, replaced with the elegant, bat-winged Eternal senshi. In a second blink, she was gone entirely from the store.

When she opened her eyes, she grinned to herself, proud of her quick resolution. She'd envisioned herself at the edge of the forest near the park - she'd duck behind one of the trees and return to her normal state. KittyKat would just assume she'd arrived there and had parked elsewhere.

Except, there was only one hitch.

As rose colored eyes opened, they met with the startled green ones of her best friend - who hadn't been on the other side of the park, like Dia had assumed she would be.

Whoops.

"O-Oh. Hi."

A single gloved hand rose and gave a weak wave to the civilian.

If she'd been in the park as General Tourmaline she might have noticed the slight shift in the air just prior to Sailor Dia's sudden arrival. She hadn't, however. Katrina had expected to at least start the night as civilians, even if they opted to cause trouble elsewhere as Dia and Tourmaline. Her heart was pounding in her chest. If she'd been thinking straight she would have transformed herself, drawing the shadowy cover of darkness over her civilian form for protection. She wasn't, obviously, and she stood there eyes wide until enough small, familiar things settled in for her to back down.

"I guess teleporting in is better than showing up late," she teased, a lightly playful smirk curving the corners of her lips. Until told otherwise she wouldn't assume there was any other reason why Prissy had decided to show up as her powered self.

It was only after taking a moment to look her friend over that she noticed the changes to Sailor Dia's uniform. "Well, well... Look at you. You didn't tell me that we had something to celebrate tonight. Probably a good thing no one is actually here at the park to catch me talking to you here like that, though. You could have warned me."

"Where's the fun in that?"

Her momentary confusion evaporated as she realized the woman was referring to her upgrade. It had been so long since Tourmaline and Dia had properly hunted together that it had completely slipped the senshi's mind that she probably should have gone about bragging about her Eternal status.

"And oh... this old thing?" One finger moved back, playfully pushing against one of her large bat-like wings. It was a shame, honestly, that she hadn't been given the ability to fly with the addition of her new extensions - ah well, not every dream got to come true. "Guess it must have slipped my mind. It's okay to be jealous though, you know. I won't mind."

To emphasize, she gave her best friend a wink. It felt good to be catty again.

"I might be a little jealous." Katrina admitted easily enough, which meant there had to be a catch of some sort. The grin on her lips as she watched the Senshi of Candy with bright, green eyes confirmed it. She might be a little jealous of the wings and the ribbons and even the pearls; the fancy romance of looking like a princess out of a nightmare, but she could show off too.

After reaching out to lightly brush her fingers along the strand of pristine pearls dangling from a black bat wing she stepped back. Her transformation wasn't nearly as impressive as a senshi's. She had no pen to hold up, no magic words to utter. What she did have was darkness to wrap around her like a cloak-- a safety blanket.

Katrina drew the shadows around her as she closed her eyes, taking in the familiar comfort of Chaos as it enveloped her. Katrina Halloran disappeared as the shadow faded from around her, leaving General Tourmaline behind. Gone were her the shorts and tank beneath her leather Captain's coat, replaced by something more protective and sturdy. Armored guards rose from her boots to offer shield to her knees while plated leather clung to her torso. She might not be the princess her friend was, but she could certainly pass as a dark knight.

"Didn't exactly slip my mind, but... Things have been busy lately."

"Well, well. Looks like someone's been a busy girl."

The words were laced with venom, though Dia was, in a way, sincerely proud of her best friend. After all, the candy senshi didn't pick losers to be her best friend, so it only made sense for the other girl to strive to be just as...no, almost as good as she was. Her outfit was stellar and true to form for Captain Tourmaline, which was a nice touch, all in all.

Er. General Tourmaline.

That would take some getting used to.

"I take it your training with the Puppyboy has paid off, then?" One hand casually moved up to flick away a pink spiral, the other hand moving to rest on her hip. "I'm so glad you didn't resort to such nasty habits as starseed eating. It's really a shame what happened to him, tsk."

The grin didn't leave her lips, but the gleam in her eyes darkened. For some reason she'd thought that Dia would have been pleased or proud or something. Bitterness. Jealousy. Frustration that she hadn't been allowed to have her moment of shining brightly as an Eternal first? That was something.

It wasn't the something she'd been hoping for, or even the something she had initially expected. It wasn't pride in whiskey eyes or a nod of satisfaction. Her ascension to General wasn't anything that she had expected.

But it was something.

"He's strong. Wolfeite ascended to General before I did-- Before you got those pretty little wings, unless you've been keeping that a secret for long." Katrina hadn't come out that evening to be competitive or petty, but Tourmaline was very much each of those things in spades. It took a considerable amount of effort to push the bubbling frustration back down.

"We're learning from each other the way he intended us to. If I can fight like a youma I don't need to be one. I can protect myself, and I can look out for you and I can make sure that no one else leaves again."

She audibly hmphed at the comment of Wolfeite becoming General before either of them. He was a wild card and a creepy one at that. Anything or anyone willing to fuse with a monster to get power... well, she didn't think terribly high of the concept. Not that Prissy or Dia tended to do any work in general, she too was proud of her accomplishments (however few they might amount to, relatively speaking).

As Tourmaline's last comment, though, her eyes narrowed. If there was one thing that Dia knew from the year she'd been in Destiny City, it boiled down to one, simple, difficult lesson.

"Everyone eventually leaves."

Her arms folded across her chest and she tossed her head, followed by what could only be described as a haughty sound. "Even the ones you depend on the most. The ones who aren't ever supposed to go away. They'll always betray you, in the end."

The head turn wasn't because she was dismissing her best friend. She was turned to keep her best friend from seeing the water pooling in her eyes as her fingers dug tightly into the skin of her arm. "They say they love you, that they did it all for your sake. Funny, how things work out when they just disappear and take everything with them."

Taking a deep breath, she lifted one heel up and dug it into the ground beneath her. What was supposed to be a friendly catch-up was turning into more of a mess.

"Maybe it's better that way." Her voice had grown quiet, losing some of its backbone. "If you don't have to worry about people, then you aren't at risk for losing much, right?"

"No." The word was quiet, softly spoken as Tourmaline began to tremble. Her fingers curled into fist so tightly that she could feel clawed tips of her gloves threatening to dig into the mail covering her palms. Tourmaline's shoulders squared as she straightened herself before speaking again, loud and clear.

"No. No. It's not better and it's not going to happen, do you hear me?" she snapped, fingers unfurling only to reach out and snatch one of Dia's gloved hands at the wrist. Her grasp was firm and desperate, edging back into the madness of someone who was afraid of losing more than she already had.

Tourmaline-- Katrina-- feigned indifference to many things and took too long to warm up to people beyond competitive cattiness in general. People were held at arm's length because you couldn't trust them. Tourmaline trusted Dia, though, on most days and Katrina? Katrina had never had a best 'girlfriend' before Prissy. She didn't want to think about what might happen, where she would be, if they kept shutting each other out.

"******** people. To hell with them, if that's how you want to go about it, but not everyone. People? Sure. People come and go." Her voice was stern as she kept hold on her friend's wrist, her own spring green eyes glistening as she continued, quavering slightly. "Stop depending on people and start depending on me. That's what I'm here for."

"People?"

The incredulous expression matched her tone as she snatched her wrist back from the other girl, her free hand moving to rub the skin, as if the touch had burned her. Eyes were more than in danger of growing wet now, the tears more obvious with the addition to the angry quiver in her voice. "Who gives a crud what people think - if my own father can't even stay around, what makes me think anyone else will?"

Emotional Bomb Hidden for Way Too Long From Her Best Friend: delivered and detonated.

Dia had thought that the revelation would have made her feel slightly better to finally get off her chest, despite the humiliation that came with it. But it didn't. Instead, her anger and rage at the man who helped bring her into the world was spilling over. There hadn't been time to properly grieve or vent her frustration - no - she had to keep the appearances up, had to try to keep her own head above water after being tossed out onto the street to fend for herself with no way of knowing what to do. She'd never been left alone, never been on her own to survive before.

"He lied to me. He said he'd always be there for me and now he's not and now I'm left with... left with...."

Fists curled up and she let out an anguished screech, candy drops falling into her hand suddenly as she hurled the pieces towards the nearby trees. Large globs of pink goo splattered across the bark and grass, candy shrapnel piercing the wood.

"I have NOTHING and it's because of HIM."

"Fathers are s**t. Mine thinks that I'm on drugs, spending time with the wrong people-- Convinced that when I'm out with you we've got to be doing something illegal. He--" Her own features had contorted into an angry mask, fed by Dia's venting and frustrations. If her friend wanted to burn the world down then she'd be right there beside her with the matches and gasoline.

"You've got something." her voice softened as she spoke, taking slow, steady steps towards the Senshi of Candy so as to not set her off. Tourmaline vanished one of her gauntlets so when she reached out to her friend again it was with a bare hand. Fingers lightly brushed along the cuff of Dia's glove before she slid her hand into the other woman's, twining their fingers together.

"It might not be much, but you've got me... And I'm not going anywhere, even if you throw that candy s**t at me."

The urge to jerk her hand back a second time was tempting, but Dia listened to what the other girl had to say, though her scowl remained plastered across her face. The Hallmark moment wasn't having the effect that Tourmaline seemed to want it to, but the candy senshi would at least give her credit for trying.

"You realize I'm talking in the literal sense, right?"

The tears were at least drying up, even though her voice was still sour. "I'm worthless. I've probably got less money than you right now, even."

Her eyebrows rose and fell, a sigh escaping her as her free hand moved up to brush away some of the heavy pink bangs from out of her eyesight. It should be noted, though, that she still hadn't pulled away from her friend's grasp.

"You may not care for your father, but mine...." Her nose wrinkled as she fought the urge to get emotional. "Daddy had never done anything wrong, until we find out that he's been doing wrong... this entire time? And I don't get it. Why would he risk it. Why would he risk... me?"

Her voice had quieted again, more confusion than sadness this time as she glanced towards her best friend. "Why would he risk me?"

"Money isn't everything." Those words came from her mouth before she could remind herself of who she was talking to. The early stages of their relationship had revolved around the money that Priscilla Stratford had and her willingness to spend it on making her new best friend into her new project. It had been a nice perk, but it wasn't why they were friends and she'd become less accepting of the spoiled treatment after her father had started to question where certain accessories had come from-- a fancy 'friendship' bracelet with glittery pink charms, a necklace with a wire-wrapped pendant that Prissy hadn't liked, but she'd made enough of a fuss about anyways on her last birthday... Little things that had meant something to her.

She was grasping bits and pieces of what her friend was saying-- Her father had done something terrible that had taken him away from her and they'd lost everything as a result? Gambling debt? Poor investments? The way of the world when it came to financials was often beyond her, but she was certain enough that any number of things could lead to trouble.

"Wa-- Wait. Rewind." She turned in order to get a better look at her friend, reaching up with her own free hand to see if she could help at all with Dia's mass of cotton candy curls. "Dia, what happened? Do you want to go somewhere else and talk about it? We can go back to my place... Or we can get it out now, talk about it here and go raise some hell and pick a few energy drained pockets to make up for it?"

"Sitting around hasn't done me any good so far," The pinkette finally released her hand from her partner's, using it as an excuse to pink an invisible piece of lint from off of her dress. "So I don't see how it'll be good if I sit down somewhere else."

Eyes suddenly flashed over towards Tourmaline as the candy senshi conceived an idea. Snatching the other girl's wrist, she teleported them out in a blink of an eye. A mile over, black heels and boots landed on the rooftop of one of DC's local clubs. This one, from the shape of the building, could be identified as Paradise.

As soon as they'd landed, Dia released the other girl from her hold and made her way towards the edge of the roof. It was still afternoon, albeit getting darker, so the sidewalk wasn't quite as populated as it would be in several more hours.

"We can talk here, until it opens." One head tilt gestured towards the club. Prissy had managed to find several opportunities to snatching a starseed or two from unfortunate members of the club and tonight was going to be no different, as far as she was concerned.

Well, save for the presence of Tourmaline, of course.

Taking a seat on the rooftop's elevated edge, one striped legging crossed over the other as she stated bluntly, "My father's been embezzling from the company since I was five years old. Apparently."

Teleporting always left a strange, prickling sensation along her skin, even beneath the layers of her uniform. She imagined it to be something like stepping through a pool of dark static only to arrive at another location, and that likely had something to do with it. When she teleported she generally had to prepare herself for the feeling, but with Dia whisking her away she was left dazed briefly.

By the time her friend had taken a seat she had snapped out of it, just in time to catch the information that Dia was offering about the situation with her father. "s**t." The word that fell from her lips probably wasn't what Dia wanted to here, or even what she needed to hear for that matter, but it was the first thing to come to mind as she closed the distance between them in order to take a seat beside her friend.

"When did you find out?" Wealth and power had always seemed like to very important things to Priscilla, so she wouldn't have been surprised to hear that her friend had known for some time. That illusion might have been something that she'd needed to keep up, but it would explain the at-home manicures and the lack of flare on her birthday.

Are you okay? That was another question she wanted to ask, but she had a feeling she knew the answer and she was going to try and avoid giving Dia a reason to snap at her for the moment. Instead she leaned forward over the edge, hands keeping hold of the ledge so she didn't fall. The rush was tempting, but she was trying her best to be a little less reckless.
