Jordan was tired.

Not that tired was anything new, really; especially in their blacks, only their pale hands and face and neck (and bright hair, hidden under a black beanie for that extra touch), the dark circles under their eyes stood out like they'd been punched. Some people didn't exhaust well, and Jordan was one of them, but nowadays they were always tired and it didn't really mean anything any more. Was it a day where they got three hours of sleep? Four? Five? Those were all the same.

Nobody appreciated how hard it was to run lights, either, not really; they knew the show better than half the damn actors and they only got paid because they were 18. A year ago, two, it would have been college credit and community service -- so everyone was poor, big deal, they still wanted compensation -- but it didn't matter, did it, because when you were cheap and you wanted someone to run the lightboard you went to Jordan Riley. A fast learner, an undercharger, the reputation they were building was good enough for them to want nothing to call it into question.

Maybe they'd move out of Destiny City after they went to college. They knew, they knew, their parents wouldn't let them out of sight until they were 'of an age' or 'of a responsibility' (whatever that meant) - so that Lighting Design major would wait until September when college began in full, and that was four years of their life gone like that. It didn't matter if they enjoyed lighting. It was something they were good at, and it'd be a steady job, and --

Jordan fumbled with their pockets, pulled out their phone, and started murmuring incomprehensibly to themself as they composed a series of scathing tweets about their employer.

The theater was somewhere Ashanite felt breathlessly, easily at home. Rhys, he supposed, must have been an actor - there were few other reasons to have Shakespeare monologues, with staging, committed practically to muscle memory. He had yet to attempt to step back onto the stage, but he enjoyed finding time to watch a performance or two.

The unfortunate bit of it was that he didn't exactly have much money to pay for performances, and that usually meant picking an out of the way spot in the catwalks, teleporting up to it, and moving any time a crew member got too close. It was all very Phantom of the Opera, except that he wasn't here to kill anyone, he was just here to enjoy a musical about murderous high schoolers.

While powered up, because one never knew when Order might be lurking or what might theoretically become a good energy draining opportunity. Or something.

Really it was just because teleportation would make for a quick exit.

Jordan really, really wasn't paid enough to deal with maybe-LARPers having scrambled into the catwalks. ********, they barely even had catwalks; if this had been a theater with legitimate catwalks, they would have had to hire someone with professional experience. (Or, like, at least someone else who was equally reliable, because it was really just Jordan on Lights and one other guy who'd been out sick for a week. Something about a respiratory infection? They didn't care enough to remember.)

It was enough of catwalks to involve moving the lights mid-show, at least, which had really been much easier with two people - they leaned their head out from their half-hidden spot and clicked their tongue. "We're not open for tourists. Put a shirt on, show me your resume, I can never recommend you to the director and I can die happy if a car hits me next week. Now, move, I need to turn these off."

(They were pretty, in the half-light; long eyelashes and narrow fingers, bright eyes, eyebrows raised in a perpetual look of scorn. Jordan looked like a girl who had a chip on her shoulder - because, of course, there had never been any sense in ruining their brilliant future, not when they were still dependant for housing - so, well. They looked like a girl.)

Ashanite frowned faintly. He'd thought he'd stayed well enough hidden and kept track of the lighting tech - apparently, he hadn't done as well as he'd thought. Still, being spotted wasn't the end of the world - it wasn't as if it was much trouble to move. And, alright, maybe he'd screw with the civilian just a little, for his own entertainment.

And, well, also, as an evaluation. How they reacted to seeing him vanish and reappear would tell him a lot about them - and it was always a good idea to be looking for more potential recruits. If they were, at least, not going to panic, they might be useful to the Negaverse.

"Ah, let me get out of your way," Ashanite said lightly, and then he teleported a ways behind them. "I'm afraid I don't intend to leave just yet."

Jordan kept steady-shouldered, surprisingly enough, and although they were surprised - who wouldn't be? - their voice didn't shake, their posture didn't change. They only turned around, one foot in front of the other, still frowning. "It's a nice trick, but, uh - " a drawn-out valley girl uhhhhhh, complete with mock bubblegum-bubble pop - "I still need you out of here so I can close up."

They looked at him, and their gaze was challenging. "I'm sure you think you're very interesting, sir, but like I said: put a shirt on, leave, and I'll give your resume to my director just about never."

Ashanite hummed. Yes, this one was interesting - plenty of fire, and very good at masking their fear or just utterly and completely fearless. He liked that, in a potential recruit.

"I'm not interested in you handing my resume to your director." Not that he really had one to offer, anyway. "Though I will say, I am impressed with you. Good lighting work, and I also appreciate that watching someone teleport apparently didn't bother you."

He took a step forward, and extended a hand. "Have you ever considered a career in magical crimefighting?"

They raised one eyebrow, than the other, and made half-a-show of thinking about it. "It depends, you know. What are the chances of me dying horribly or being otherwise maimed, and what're the worker's benefits? This is actually just community service hours as far as anything's concerned, so they're paying me zilch." (One of Jordan's eyelids twitched, a little, and twitched again. They liked to pretend the lack of pay didn't bother them. It meant they only fantasized about violent murder a few more times than usual.)

"And, of course, what are the chances of me getting away with murdering my employees for the fact they never pay anyone they hire? I'm not an idiot, you know." They took a few steps, pacing around him, hands still by their sides. "The murder is fine, honestly. It's just a bonus that it'd get to be no-trace."

Then Jordan smirked, slight, and it showed too many teeth. "What's the point of thinking it through? I can always appreciate a new career path." They extended their hand out in return and took his, slight-fingered, strong-gripped.

Ashanite laughed, dryly. Yes, he liked this one a lot - apparently, one of his qualifying factors for Lieutenants was ability and desire to sass him. It was good to be challenged, after all.

"On the side I'm offering, your chances of dying or being maimed are fairly low, I'd say." He shrugged his shoulders. "Having played both sides, there was a lot more almost dying on the other one." Barring being kidnapped and tortured, but that was...unlikely to be an event that repeated itself. He hoped. "The pay is garbage, but the benefits include a fancy uniform, super strength, super speed, and eventually, teleportation and a weapon capable of doing real, serious damage. And connections, for a much better job." Ah, Romano's. The best plan the Negaverse had yet put in place, in Ashanite's humble opinion.

"You can also do all the untraceable murder your violent little heart desires. I'll even show you how," he said, lightly. Yes, this was exactly the sort of person he wanted for the Negaverse.

"This might sting a little," he said. Vicious understatement. He held onto their hand, keeping them in place as he stepped forward and slid his hand into their chest, fingers curling around their starseed and Chaos pressing in with the ease of familiar motion. Corrupting Lieutenants was as easy as breathing, now that he'd done it a few times.

Jordan made a strangled little noise in their throat when Ashanite grabbed their starseed, like they were going to throw up but their throat had closed too early for it to actually happen - even through the pain their hand struggled up towards his wrist, shaking violently - and then it was done, and the cap settled down onto their head, and they were someone else.

"Thank god," Larimar managed, dry-mouthed and hoarse, "I was worried I'd end up looking like you." Actually, their breathing felt a little restricted, a little caught in their chest; they felt like they knew what that meant and were grateful for it, but this wasn't exactly the time to check such things.
