Tonight was the night.
He'd promised little Rory a night out for some fun. Her birthday had come and go without so much as a party - and what teenage girl went without a party for her big day? Tsk.
Willows was a busy man, but even Bob knew it was practically sacrilegious to skip over a girl's birthday, especially her sweet seventeen. Which was why the Mauvian had gone out of his way to pickpocket his buddy Rob's wallet a few days prior, swiping exactly one twenty dollar bill and one ten dollar bill from the fold. The lawyer would probably suspect he'd misplaced the money or that someone in the firm had taken liberties... but Bob would let him worry about that little detail.
With no pockets of his own, he'd managed to locate a rubber band and slid the cash on the underside of one of his paws. Not the most ideal of locations, but sufficient enough until she'd figured out what sort of dinner she'd like. Adventure and food - a perfect pair for a night out on the town, right?
Pushing his way through her open window, the large cat crooned softly, "Luuuuuuuucy, I'm home~"

Rory had been in the bathroom down the hall examining her latest bruise in the mirror when she heard Bob's drawl from her bedroom. Her fingers had been pressing on the bruise beneath her chin, concealer and sponge on the bathroom counter, when she realized she wasn't alone.
In a high pitched voice, clearly startled, Rory answered with a, "I'll be there in a minute!" Makeup was hastily smeared across her pale skin and she pulled the sweater she stole from Ax over her head and tugged it down over her dress to hide the mottled marks that littered her arms and thighs.
There were few instances where Rory wished she was wearing pants, but today was certainly one of them.
The girl spent a moment fluffing her hair and carefully arranging the loose strands on either side of her face to distract from whatever bruises she had missed. Slipping into her room she offered the maine coon a soft smile. "Hey there handsome boy."

She appeared from the hallway and he immediately noted that something was off.
Rory was beautiful - there was no question about it. Her happy demeanor alone was enough to convince any young suitor that she was a catch, but her natural beauty was unmistakable on top of her stellar personality. So why, then, was she suddenly covering herself up with so much makeup?
He hopped onto the comforter, adding some height to his otherwise shortened stature. Perhaps she was just excited about their evening out and had wanted to get ready for her 'ol Bob? While he had an appreciation for beautiful dames, Aurora was barely out of childhood - she was still a kid in his mind. And putting makeup on for a pet's sake?
His tail curled around his legs as he took his seat.
"Y'know, you didn't have to get all dolled up just for me, kiddo."

Rory's instinct was to tuck hair out of her face and behind her ear, which meant her hand was half lifted in the motion before she remembered that she couldn't and it dropped against the hem of her sweatshirt. Something about the way Bob was looking at her was unsettling, especially now that he was atop her bed and much more her height than normal.
"Oh. I just thought- " Rory looked and sounded dejected. Jade eyes were cast downward and her hands fiddled with the edges of her dress that peeked out barely beneath the too large sweater.
"I dunno, I didn't get to do anything for my birthday, including dressing up so this seemed..." She sighed, feeling very much like the silly school girl she was. "Does it look bad?" Maybe if she diverted enough, Bob wouldn't realize the real reason why she had make up on.
"It was a dumb idea wasn't it? It's not like anyone will see us."

He sighed.
"No, it doesn't look dumb." Even if it had, he wouldn't have told her. A woman's confidence was a spectacularly fragile thing and the Mauvian wasn't about to spend the evening consoling a sobbing teenager over whether or not she should wear makeup out in public. "I'm just not used to it, s'all."
Green eyes watched her fiddle with her outfit, which also seemed awkward on her small frame. Too small of a frame, but that was a comment he withheld, less he upset her any further. Girls in baggy clothes never did anything to help a man appreciate their figure, but if it made her comfortable... well, who was he to correct her?
His tail flicked and eyes returned to her overly-caked chin and cheeks.
"Is there anywhere in particular that you'd like to go? Or shall I lead the way?"

"I dunno, I figured maybe it was time to start experimenting with it since I never wear anyway." Make up wasn't practical with all of the volunteer stuff she liked to do and, well, despite what Bob might have thought...Boys never seemed to be interested in her. (Besides, she supposed Obsidian but that was different.)
And Oberon, but Bob would have scolded her if he knew about the boy because of his alignment.
Carefully, Rory inched closer and reached a delicate hand out to reach out and scratch the feline behind the ears. "I don't mind following your lead today," she answered, shrugging when she drew her hand back and pulled the sleeves down, up to her knuckles. "Somewhere with a patio maybe, so we won't have to fuss as much about you getting to stay with me."
Sneaking cats into restaurants was more difficult than she would like. "Let me just put my shoes on. Pops won't be home until the morning so sneaking out's not a problem"

Her words were white noise, static in his head as his eyes fell on the hand reaching down to stroke him. As soon as the sleeve lifted up, he spotted one rather nasty looking bruise - almost as if someone had created it by gripping on to her wrist too harshly.
He felt the hairs on his back beginning to sprout at the audacity of it all. Who, who had the nerve to treat a kid like that? And why was Rory letting some asshat treat her like dirt long enough to get bruises like that?
She must not have noticed the prickling, as her hand continued to stroke his back. Having had far more than enough of this nonsense, he jerked backwards, a primal hiss escaping his mouth as his fangs were bared.
"That isn't the problem, Aurora."
Anger was an understatement. How long had he dropped her hints, reprimanded her gently about the marks on her body? The one on her wrist was clearly a new one - she was still going out and about and allowing herself to be knocked around like this?
Bob had a sneaking suspicion that it wasn't fighting with the enemy that was creating the markings, which infuriated him even further.
"The problem is you acting like nothing is the matter. If you're having to cover up markings like a battered housewife, don't you think it's going to be a little obvious? I'm not stupid, but you're acting the part for assuming I'd be oblivious."
Angry Cat Level had now hit 10 on the richter scale.

When Bob had brought it up last time he'd been on her bed, in her room, she had dodged the question and he had dropped it. She hadn't meant to be so careless when scratching the cat's fur.
The second her dear feline companion snapped at her, the teen visibly recoiled, flinching and pulling her hands against her chest and stepping away. Jade eyes blinked several times, brows knitted together in a mix of surprise and embarrassment. For a brief moment, Rory looked every part of the small, young girl that she was.
"What are you - " she tried to interrupt and defend, but her words fell on flat ears because Bob was angry with her. "I'm not a battered housewife," she snapped, swallowing hard and trying to summon her stubbornness and pride to the surface. "It's part of the job!" She snapped, more irritable sounding than she actually was.
She didn't want to fight about this and she didn't want a lecture, not from a cat of all things. "I got into a tiff that I thought I could handle and I walked away from it a little worse for the wear. I'm fine. Things are fine."
Rory wasn't naive enough to think that Bob didn't know who she spent a lot of time with on their side. She could keep him out of her order-aligned meetings but not the negaverse ones. "I'm just - It's training Bob. I'm getting better." There was a pause as she shook. "I'm stronger." More capable surely.

"Stronger? You practically flinch if I so much as look at you the wrong way!"
He knew his stature was against him when it came to looking formidable, but Bob had dealt with his size all of his life. So instead, he spun around and began to pace across the bedspread, nails digging in to the comforter with every angry step he took.
Hydra was a senshi, which made her a soldier but she wasn't nearly as strong as she thought herself to be. She was going to get herself killed. And, if Obsidian had picked up on training her like Bob had expressively told him to drop, she would end up getting herself killed by her own team.
Puffs of air continued to get snorted out of his small, wet nose as he continued his pacing. If the bruises were on her wrist and other areas - oh <********>, what other areas could they be on? - surely Obsidian had decided to take the fledgling, baby bird of a senshi under his crazy, asinine wing. Bob wasn't sure who he was more mad at - Obsidian, for being himself, Rory for being stupid or his own furry self for letting all of this reach the point it'd come to.
Turning to the teenager, he narrowed his eyes.
"You're right, you're not a battered housewife."
Pause.
"You act like an abused, stubborn child because that's what you are."

If the situation had been different, Rory thought she might have reacted differently. She didn't flinch before Obsidian nor did she flinch before the white moon foes that littered the city and threatened the earth.
But, she flinched at Bob's anger.
It was startling and unsettling to see how quickly he had shifted from her happy cat who was content to let her cuddle and dress him as she pleased to see him so...volatile with the way he paced back and forth on her bed, claws leaving tiny rips in the fabric of her comforter. Rory often felt small, because she was, but this was different different kind of small. Her gaze was downward cast and her hands had wrapped themselves around the edges of the sleeves of Axton's jacket that was far too large for her.
Child. That's what Bob had called her and had her head snapping up, any sort of conflict in her expression gone - replaced by a simmering anger.
"You don't know anything." She said, an icy edge to her voice as her gaze followed the back and forth of the orange feline. Rory's pride was getting the better of her and she stood straighter for it. "Call me a child," she spat the word at him, "but at least I'm doing something instead of mooching off of the success and kindness of others." Rory's chin tipped as she tried to hold herself higher.
"I don't expect you to understand, but I am stronger and more capable." She turned on her heel, shoes forgotten when she stomped out of the room.
She would just have to prove it to him.

It was Bob's turn to recoil back at her words, the truth hitting home nastier than he'd care for it to. He'd never hidden his intentions - he knew what he wanted from life and never cared to pretend that he'd take the easiest route to get there. But hearing it practically spat back at him from someone he actually gave two craps about....
Well, it stung. Which only made it more frustrating - why did he care??
"Aurora." The name was exhaled with exasperation as the cat descended from the bed and began to pad after her. "Come back. You don't know what you're..."
As he turned the bedroom corner he could hear the slamming of doors. She'd already taken her leave of him and for a brief, terrifying moment, the Mauvian worried about what exactly she was up to. Women in the heat of the moment acted out brashly - the last thing he wanted was for her to get hurt all because of some stupid spat between them.
Turning back around, the large Maine Coon trotted across the bedroom, hopped back onto the windowsill and disappeared in the evening.
Nuxaz fin, unless you wanted a last post! <3
