Name: Farah
Stage: Prentice
Race: 1/2 Ice, 1/2 Water
Gender: Male
3 Base Traits: Abnormal, Paranoid, Volatile
Personality:

Abnormal
Ever since he was a small boy Farah has been on the unsettling side of 'odd'. He sees images sometimes that aren't there, which tends to effect his sleep schedule. As a rule he refuses to eat any meat that isn't fish, on the grounds that he'll 'upset' the voices, and they'll do something bad to him.

In truth, he's more afraid of the images and the voices then he is about anything in the 'real' world. For a time he tried to listen to his father; to believe that they weren't real and that if he tried hard enough maybe it would all go away. When that didn't work Farah gave up, and decided to try making them happy. So far his odd behaviors are working out; his good days out number the bad, though for how much longer he doesn't know.

His general behavior has always been odd; he moves a little too quickly at times, often flipping around like some kind of beast instead of a man.

Paranoid
Farah has been plagued by hallucinations ever since his earliest days; some far worse than others. On his 'good' days he can be rather pleasant, if not a little twitchy, but on his 'bad' days he's a wreck. Someone is always watching him, even when they aren't. He's been known to openly accuse his family of spying on him, even if they're miles away at the time, or of bringing others to the island when no one was ever there.

He hears voices, no matter what his father says about them 'not being real'. Farah knows it's a lie; he hears them. Because of his innate paranoia his moods can snap in an instant, bringing him from hugging his father one moment to threatening him with a chair leg the next.

Water seems to 'drown' the voices; it makes them quiet, and easier to cope with, so he usually stays on the shoreline throughout the day. So long as he's doing something in the water Farah isn't worked up by the general mess inside of his head. Most of the time, that is.

Volatile
When having one of his 'fits' Farah is a danger not only to himself but, to everyone around him. His moods simply change too rapidly. There are no 'transitions'; they simply snap back and forth so often that more than a few village elders have labeled him possessed. When he's angry he lashes out at the closest thing; whether that be an inanimate object or someone. More than a few times that's led to altercations with village children, which is the main reason why he's been separated.

His father worries for Faydis around Farah, but ultimately Farah seems to have a soft spot for her. He still has his moments, though the love he carries for his twin has kept him somewhat calm around her. In his opinion it's because he's able to be himself around her; Faydis has always egged him on, pushed him to let his moods run wild and Farah's never had to attempt hiding them around her. He knows if he talks about the 'voices' she won't tell him to shut up, and like the water, he uses her presence to calm his more turbulent moods.

History:

Farah and Faydis' parents met on the road. Their mother, Sigrun, was traveling from Zidel to a smaller village when she came across a stranger half frozen in the snow. She took him to the nearest inn, and stayed by his side as a healer tended to his ailments. In the time it took him to heal, Sigrun learned that the man's name was Taavetti and that he was a wanderer who, in his youth, wanted to see as much of the world as possible.

There was much to admire about the iceling woman who had rescued him; she was beautiful, if not cool tempered, and in her distance from him, Taavetti could tell she was strong of spirit. He tried to charm Sigrun into traveling with him, but the woman openly told the wicked little fish that she had a family back in Zidel, a husband and two daughters, and was simply on her way to visit with her sister.

Still, there was something about Taavetti that Sigrun couldn't stay away from. Her marriage was one of love, at least in appearances; she knew her husband had affairs, but had kept herself from doing so out of pure principal. At least one of them had to keep up appearances in front of their daughters. At first, she detested that she was now trapped in that little inn, forced to stay by Taavetti because of a strong storm that made all travel dangerous, but after a few weeks of near constant contact with the man, Sigrun's defenses began to wear down.

Taavetti was a cad, a horrible flirt, terribly attractive, and attentive to her in a way she hadn't seen since she was first married. She tried to explain to him over and over that she was a married woman, who was well over ten years his senior, and he should keep his distance. Taavetti did no such thing.

He selfishly desired the iceling, and though she tried to fight it, Sigrun felt the same. Before the storm was through the two had spent more than a few nights in each other's beds, and when the snows had cleared Sigrun was gone. She claimed that her senses had returned to her, and that she needed to get away from her 'mistake' as quickly as possible. In truth, she feared that she could very easily stay there for the rest of her life, curled up in the younger man's arms, escaping her duties to her family.

When she arrived at her sister's home, Sigrun was ill. At first she thought it was merely anxiety over her misdeed that kept her retching, but when her sister made the comment about having similar signs when pregnant, Sigrun only became worse. How could she not only sleep with someone who wasn't her husband, but now be carrying his child? And a hybrid, at that?! There was no way she could return home with it, So in her letters back home, Sigrun lied to her husband, claiming her sister had taken ill, and she was having to stay longer to take care of her.

In truth, her sister was aiding in her lies to keep Sigrun's pregnancy a secret. She remained in the woman's home until the time of her labor, only to come to the sickening realization that she carried not one hybrid child, but twins. Once the babes were born, plans were made.

Taavetti had been sought out. In the months Sigrun was pregnant her brother-in-law and his sons scoured Zena, then Sauti, and finally Tale to find the man. When he was finally found, buried in another woman's curls in a bar, and dragged back to Zena, Taavetti was just as horrified as Sigrun. He wasn't ready to be a father! At least, not one that was present and ready to raise children.

And yet he had to. Sigrun gave him an ultimatum; be there with her as she smothered the childen, or take them with him to Matori. Her husband could not find out, no one could, and she was willing to go to any lengths to make that happen.

As opposed as Taavetti was to halting his adventures so early in life, he wouldn't allow his offspring to be killed. He called Sigrun out on her callousness, her coldness to her own infants, before being tossed out with the babes in hand.

In the weeks that followed Taavetti made sure that his twin childern, Farah and Faydis, survived. He paid wet nurses to travel with them as far as they could and tried to do his best. Taavetti wasn't experienced with children at all, let alone newborns, but he tried. He wouldn't just ignore the life he'd produced, like Sigrun seemed to be able to do, no matter how unexpected it was.

He took Farah and Faydis to Matori, to his old home in Besaji, where they grew up in relative happiness. Taavetti's parents were long since dead, and the man raised his son and daughter as best as he could with the help of friends and neighbors.

At least, until they started to show peculiarities.

Once they were around the age of six, Taavetti began to notice that his children weren't like the others. At first he had just assumed they were shy and awkward because of their mixed heritage, but as they aged more specific issues came to light.

Farah's erratic mood swings would often scare other children away. One moment he seemed reserved, even hiding to cry, and the next he would show such a force of aggression that it scared even his father. His lack of self-restraint left Taavetti with no choice, but to keep him away from the villagers, out of fear of what he would do them or himself.

Faydis proved to make matters worse, when given an opportunity. She felt less of a need for direct interaction with strangers and non-family, particularly when the brunt of her entertainment came from egging her older brother on, encouraging his moods, and consistently pitting him against 'outsiders' whenever they happened to cross paths. She was clingy with Farah, regardless of her brother's temperament at the time, and always interested in whatever he was doing.

When they turned ten, Farah would often speak of seeing people that weren't there, or hearing voices when no one else was around. He became paranoid, jumping at every little sound and snapping at Taavetti for 'sneaking up on him' even when he'd announced himself at least three times. It was during this period that Taavetti was introduced to the idea of 'medicating' his children.

While Farah adamantly refused, and could not be tricked, coerced, or pleaded into taking anything, Faydis decided she would try whatever anyone put in front of her, so long as it was wrapped in sticky taffy. She was a bold and reckless little girl, and wasn't afraid of what 'medication' could do to her.

Farah was kept isolated in their little hut, as it seemed to calm him. He returned to a somewhat 'normal' child, finding most of his peace and delight in the ocean. Hee never seemed to understand why his father didn't like him laughing when a beloved pet died, or why it upset Taavetti when Farah's emotions didn't seem to be the same as his. Farah tried to understand, but in the long run, his oddity just drove a wedge between him and his father.

As ever, Faydis chose to stay close at her brother's. She didn't question whatever drugs she was given, but on the days when she took it, it sapped most care for anything right out of her. While she'd once been jittery, chattery, clingy, vocal, and active, after taking her medicine, she became lazy, soft-spoken, careless, and despondent. The siblings have their fair share of argument over the matter (what with Farah being offended that his right-hand lady doesn't have his back at all times, anymore), but as a creature of habit, Faydis can't be bothered to change her routine. There are days that she misses taking her pills, and both she and Farah are happy for those, but it's easy enough to take them up again.

By the time they were fourteen Farah and Faydis were living on their own. Their father had moved to a larger hut near the village and was openly courting women to marry, leaving his two children to tend to themselves for the most part.

Hey, so just a few questions to start us out! Basically, I’m still getting the gist of the twins so I’m just going to start with some of the first questions that popped out to me as I read. <3

If their father is worried about Faydis around Farah why would he leave her with her brother? How would Farah react if Faydis did leave him one day? Will he ever worry that he could harm her because of his unstable mind? Does he know / realize that she eggs him on some days and if not how would he feel that his sister is feeding his paranoia with lies and etc? Will he ever discover / understand that?

So Farah does not take medicine while his sister does? Would his father force such things on him since he seems to be the biggest danger due to the voices?

Also, I notice that their history runs pretty much the same since they were twins / attached at the hip basically. However, was there ever an instance that Farah was without Faydis? Or even more so how does his instability veer his perception of their childhood as compared to his sister's view? Just trying to see what his actual perspective may be in some of their history.

Is it only the water and his sister than helps calm him down and nothing else? Does he prefer the idea of being alone or would he harbor some angst over the fact that he can’t be normal and make friends like others his age? Has anyone tried or do they just avoid him from the start?

Side question - Will either ever have anything to do with their mother? Just curious if she’ll ever somehow come into their lives, even if they just decide to try and see who the woman was at least. Or do they simply not care? As children did they ever wonder about why they only have one parent rather than two?

It seems Faydis has magic in her future – just out of curiosity is there any certain path, abilities that Farah has? Or are his talents still uncertain, including if he would have magical capabilities.

Also, is there any specific event that truly alerted their father to the issues at hand? Has Farah ever done something extremely dangerous to himself or others due to his instability?

He's worried for her, but not enough to try to separate the twins permanently. So far Farah has never shown signs of intentionally harming his sister, and during his visits Taavetti will keep an eye on that bond. At this stage in their lives keeping the two together seems to be doing more good for their mental stability than anything else, and as a parent pushed to the end of his rope, Taavetti isn't eager to mess with that.

Farah tends to do alright on his own during the day whenever his sister is away, but he does look forward to seeing her again in the evening so I can only assume that a lengthy split would cause some sort of fissure in his mind. If he knew she was going he would likely either beg her to stay or find some way to keep her from going. While he prefers to have his moments of being alone, Farah doesn't like to be on his own all the time. Having Faydis around is like a safety net on the really bad days; he knows that out of everyone he can open up about what's going on inside of his head and she won't judge him for it. Having her gone for days, even weeks, would likely put him on edge and make him very anxious.

As for his understanding...well, at this moment he doesn't know much of what his sister does behind the scenes or rather, he doesn't understand it. When he finds out, however, Farah won't be happy about it. He'll accuse her of hiding other things and as much as he cares for his dear sister, he'll also start to see her in a new, more wary light. If she can do this without him knowing, what else is she doing?

It's hard enough to successfully trick/coerce a rambunctious child to take their medicine, let alone a suspicious teenager. His father has tried everything (bribery, sneaking it into Farah's food, out right trying to hold the boy down and forcing him to take it, etc), but Farah has fought back every time. He's seen what it does to Faydis and he hates it. While he took it the voices faded, but so did everything else.

The whole experience has made him all the more wary of anything his father tries to do for him, or any gift presented to them.

It's not uncommon for the twins to go their separate ways during the day, as they both have their own hobbies and chores to attend to. He doesn't like being without her for long, but when he is on his own he usually spends his time by the water, collecting shells or attempting to fish.

Before he started to 'change' Farah remembered being fairly close to his father. When the voices started to come to him, however, things started to slip downhill. He still tried to do as much with his father as the older man would allow, but tensions were high. At first Taavetti thought his son's stories were just that; stories. Something concocted to gain attention, and it irritated him. He repeatedly told Farah to stop, and encouraged his son to get some friends outside of his sister, thinking that maybe a more social lifestyle would help. All that managed to do was bring public scrutiny onto the family for Farah's odd behaviors.

He tried; truly, he did. Farah tried hard to be his father's ideal son, but by the time Taavetti realized there was truly something wrong with his children the circle of trust had already been broken.

At this point in his life those are the only two things that keep him calm.

When they were smaller the twins both would have had their fair share of children that attempted to make friends with them, despite their hybrid heritage, but it was their behavior that pushed others away. At this point Farah prefers being alone. It's the only real thing he can agree with his father on these days; that he needs to be kept away from the village. Farah doesn't necessarily like it; since mentally he's never really alone. The voices won't allow it.

A world where he could trust someone else, someone who isn't Faydis, sounds nice, but he knows that won't ever happen. (or at least, he believes it won't).

Farah wants answers. He wants to know if it was because of her that he's 'haunted' or if he really is possessed. (He's not, there is no spiritual influences here, it's just him)

He's happy enough with just his father, since he can barely get along with that man these days anyway, let alone throw another parent into the mix.

As of right now I can't say. I know for certain that he won't have any sort of magical talent, but he may end up as a fisherman or a jeweler (that way his hands are busy and hopefully so is his mind).

There is no one set specific trigger that alerted Taavetti of the changes. It was all gradual; just a slow build up of things he'd rather not deal with.

Beyond get into a few fist fights with children growing up, Farah hasn't accomplished anything too dangerous.

He looks really good ^.^ I just have a couple of questions.

Where do you see his condition taking him in the future? Would he be dangerous as he gets older? Or will he eventually find some sort of peace or balance that help him interact better with others?

(And I asked Fluff this too) Why did his father leave them both as teenagers? There isn't really anything written yet as to why he moved out to a bigger home.

I personally would prefer for him to be able to find some sort of balance; some kind of support system that allows him to have a meaningful life despite the voices. He's a lil cray, with erratic mood swings, but he isn't a serial killer, nor do I have any desire for him to be.

While Taavetti chose to keep his children and raise th, but when the twins started pushing him away in their later years Taavetti found himself at a loss.

When they were capable of caring for themselves he decided to put some distance between them. (or rather, finally accepted the fact that his own children were distancing themselves from him)

Farah is well aware that his father hasn't abandoned them; well within distance should the twins ever have need of him. If anything he feels more relieved now that his father isn't living in his home. Now that it's just him and Faydis he feels as if he doesn't have to be on pins and needles so much, which Taavetti noticed.

Taavetti is now able to persue his own relationship goals while giving his children the space and freedom that seems to help them the most. He still checks in with them, as a loving father would, but he's also mindful of their boundaries.

One last question. Most of his personality traits are either directly connection to his condition, or negative in some way. Can you highlight any positive or neutral traits? You don't need to do a full description, but I'm curious how he is underneath all of that paranoia...like...who is "himself" that is revealed when he is with his sister?

The best side of Farah is a nice boy, who loves to play by the water's side and make weird little 'unique' pieces of jewelry with shells and fishy bones. They're pretty, in their own special way, and he loves to give them as gifts to his sister and on occasion, his father.

I see him as the kind of guy who will spend hours just combing the beach looking for pretty shells, occasionally talking to the voices as if they were old friends. He's found a sort of comfort in it, one that can bring him happiness in random spurts.

He enjoys cooking; fish, of course, always fish, but the variety of his dishes can vary. Some days it's a stew, others it's just a fish on a stick next to a warm bonfire with the ocean at his side.

Bonfires usually come with positive images for him, especially if he can coax Faydis into starting it. Stories can be swapped, images can be seen in the flames, and all in all...they're happy memories that Farah cherishes the most.
