" Please stay in there." Glancing over at the passenger seat, the cardboard box continued its eager wiggling. Jules had never owned a pet before - not even as a child. So when the small kitten had entered her home, it had been a welcomed distraction from the stress of planning, but she soon had come to realize that she had absolutely no idea as to what she was doing. The ride to the shelter had been much quicker than her attempts at finding a container for the rambunctious, happy little feline. She didn't want to leave it alone to go out and buy a kennel - not to mention, how much did one of those cost?? - but she had nothing in her house that could work as a cat containment method. Settling on a decently sized cardboard box that she'd been meaning to toss out anyways, she'd put the kitten in the box, only for it to pop out moments later. Several attempts and pleads in, the kitten finally remained still long enough for Jules to grab her keys, her purse and put them both in the car. Julianne had never been in an animal shelter before, so she wasn't sure what to expect when she opened the door with her hip, one hand struggling to keep the wiggly kitten from crawling out and onto the floor below while the other did its best to keep the box from wiggling out of her grasp. Not seeing anyone at the desk, she called out loudly, "I'm-I'm sorry, is there someone here that can help me?"

Rory had been in the middle of giving Astrid a bath, which, normally wouldn't be a problem if Astrid weren't a burly Shepard-mix that weighed more than her. Wrangling the dog in was way more difficult than she liked, despite how hard she tried.
Dogs usually didn't mind baths in her experience and there was a part of the teen that thought maybe Astrid was part cat. He was always fighting bath time. The older, stronger volunteers were busy with something else and poor Rory was virtually all alone when someone walked through the shelter door and started calling for help.
"Oh hell," she cursed, with her soapy arms and half soaked shirt. "You stay right there Astrid," she said, pointing her finger at him. "We're not finished." Carefully, she slipped out the bathing room and prayed that Astrid didn't get into anything he shouldn't.
Hurrying to the counter, Rory hastily wiped her hands on her jeans and brushed loose strands from her face, suds making home in her hair. "Hi, sorry. My name is Rory, what can I do for you?"

She half expected to see an overworked, ambling older woman making her way to the desk with a hobble, so her face revealed its surprise as a tousled looking teenager made her appearance from behind one of the closed doors. Her clothing and hair were disheveled and.... wet. Had she come at a bad time? Jules found herself gazing on the girl to the point that it was growing awkward, words failing her until she finally cleared her throat. The kitten in the box began to mew softly at seeing another new friend, bringing the older woman's mind back to the present. "I... I'm sorry, I'm Julianne. And this is my new curious friend." Lifting the box up to the soggy teenager, she presented the tiny fluff of wiggly fur. "I didn't want to name it on the chance of getting attached... just in case someone had lost the little thing." It was embarrassing to say that she didn't even know the gender of the tiny infant. "Has anyone come in looking for a lost kitten, by any chance? I live off of Sugar Creek and Hampton."

The moment Rory registered the woman's surprise, she stood a little straighter with her chin tipped up just so when she offered her a smile. Sure, she was five feet and three inches and a scrawny thing of a girl, but she was capable and competent. She wouldn't have some silly adult looking at her like she wasn't.
No, thank you.
Rory pushed damp strands back out of her face and went up to the counter, stretching on her tiptoes to look at the box and it's contents. To her delight, she saw a kitten immediately she was cooing at it. "Hey, there," she said in a sweet voice, reaching for the squirming kitten,
"Looks like a stray," she commented lifting the kitten up and peering at it. "Not that I've heard of, few people have been in lately." But they'd come, she knew, as the weather warmed up and people started looking for dogs for the summer.
"I can check to see if it's got a chip, but if it doesn't." She paused, looking up to scrutinize the woman as the kitten mewled in her arms. "Do you wanna keep 'em?"

"I..." She would be lying if she said the thought hadn't crossed her mind. But could she handle a kitten, right now, with everything going on? And who was to say that the kitten wouldn't prove to be a menace instead of a cuddler - she could only imagine how some of the Mauvians must have been as kittens, like Bob or Tibs. They were scoundrels now, but who was to say they didn't appear as cute and innocent as this kitten did? "I don't know the first thing about raising an animal." Now that was the honest truth. She'd grown up in a house without a pet, married a man who didn't like pets and had surmised that it was simply never meant to be for her to obtain a furry friend of her own. "Are they... difficult?"

Waiting in quiet silence, Rory took a minute to observe the woman, looking at her like she was trying to decide what type of woman she was facing. Something nagged recognition in the teen's mind and memory but she shoved it away, deciding that it was more practical to focus on the present moment and assisting her with the cute kitten she now held against her chest.
The poor thing looked exhausted, curling up in her arms as she waited for Julianne to finish speaking.
"Depends, but as far as four legged animals go...Cats are pretty easy." Once they were litter trained and taught not to scratch up everything.
Coming out from behind the counter, Rory held the kitten out to her companion with an expectant look on her face. "Hold 'em," she instructed, doing her best to pull forth the confidence she sought to extrude as Hydra. "I can help you, if you want. I've got school and I volunteer a lot, but I can make time."

There was a look of hesitation across the older woman's face as she gingerly held out both hands for receiving the tiny little furball. She tried to mimic the young woman's actions by cradling the small thing, which seemed nearly equally content with curling up against her cotton sweater as it had against the young woman. "I can deal with easy, it's messy that I'm concerned abo..." She paused mid-sentence as recognition finally, finally dawned on her. Walking in with a mewling, squirming kitten had distracted her well enough to not have recognized the teal hair and the pretty green eyes against the young face that looked up at her. "I know you...." Her words drifted for a moment as she felt herself instinctively straighten up her shoulders. This was one of the senshi - the one Obsidian had taken a favor to, in fact. Out of the screaming party room of Chuck E Cheese's, it had taken her a minute to place the face. There was a pregnant pause as she contemplated her next words. Finally, the smile returned to her face and she proceeded to behave like she always did as Julianne Payne: she was outgoing and friendly. "I would love for your assistance - I don't mind paying you for your time, either, if you didn't mind stopping by my place after your school or even..." She paused once more, still smiling, "..your training?"

Rory seemed pleased with the way Julianne was handling the little kitten, who seemed attached to her already. "Cat's pick their people, looks like this one picked you." It was as simple as that really.
Reven and Bob had picked her and she wouldn't have traded either of them for the world.
"It's going to be messy," she said flatly, seeing no point in sugarcoating the fact. "It's a kitten. Kittens are messy, but he'll learn." It was like babies but easier, because you could teach them to use a litter box long before you could teach a baby to use the potty. And Rory had dealt with both, which left her confident that she could teach her adult lady friend how to handle it too.
"Huh?" She looked up, jade eyes blinking before recognition had blossomed across her face. Hadn't this lady been at that meeting thing with Obsidian?
"Oh, sure yeah. That's fine." She tried not to let it show how surprised she was. Hardly anyone had paid attention to her at the meeting, which was fine, she was young and small and unnoticeable. But, being recognized had been surprising. "Training goes pretty late, usually not in any shape to be catwrangling so before is better."

"I'm sure we can work out some sort of arrangement." Still cradling the kitten, she looked around the area, lips pressed together as an idea began to slowly creep its way across her mind. With things the way they were and the upcoming stress of the week ahead of them, it might actually prove useful to have another of Obsidian's little underlings on her side for... reasons. "I have a few things that need discussing in regards to..." She paused, smiling, "Training. Both with the kitten and without." Keeping her words vague, Julie's occupied hand gestured towards the back room from where Rory had originally appeared. Waiting for her new companion to lead the way, despite the teenager's apparent confusion, the two women slipped into the back room, sleeping kitten in tow. Nuxaz and fin <3 Thank you, sugar!
