"Page twenty-three, paragraph six," said Magiore, setting down his notes on the desk at the front of the room and looking out at the students that were currently staring back at him, some of them dead eyed and glazed. Others were actually paying attention - the majority, thankfully, since he was not known for being an easy teacher, by any means, but at least he wasn't terrible.
Mostly. Magiore was not unreasonable, even if he was perfectly aware of some of the things that were said about him behind his back - something like ice cold and chilly b*****d - which, besides from being almost unbearably lacking in creativity, mostly just made him vaguely amused.
Still, he at least tried to make his classes monotonous. That had been something that Magiore had never been able to stand, whether in classes or in the Negaverse or simply in life. A lecture style classroom was one thing, but people tended to listen better when their minds were allowed to work, rather than sitting staring blandly at a teacher or a professor who droned on and on about nothing in particular. Magiore's English Literature class was tough, perhaps, but it was interesting and it worked.
He pointed at one of his students in the second to last row.
"Miss Hensley," said Magiore. "Could you please read the notated paragraph?"

Harley certainly had reservations about Romano's, but she found that, despite the militaristic schedule and uniforms, the classes were up to snuff. The workloads were fair, so long as you kept up on classwork, and the teachers all seemed well-versed in their various subjects. Take Mr. Carpenter, for example. True, if one didn't apply themselves, they'd find themselves struggling... but Harley relished the challenge. She had to get that scholarship, but that didn't mean she'd expected them to just hand it to her!
As soon as she heard her name, she paused promptly from taking notes to switch over to her book, offering him a small nod of acknowledgement. Clearing her throat, she began to read.
" 'But this idea was soon banished, and her spirits were very differently affected, when, to her utter amazement, she saw Mr. Darcy walk into the room. In an hurried manner he immediately began an inquiry after her health, imputing his visit to a wish of hearing that she were better. She answered him with cold civility. He sat down for a few moments, and then getting up, walked about the room. Elizabeth was surprised, but said not a word. After a silence of several minutes, he came towards her in an agitated manner, and thus began-
'In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.' "
Pride and Prejudice. Harley found herself quite enamored with the book, in truth. Who didn't like a story about romances? Especially ones that didn't immediately begin with love at first sight... She promptly looked back up at Mr. Carpenter, awaiting further instruction.

Harley Hensley was a good student, and a good choice to read aloud, since Magiore had had his fair share of students who would read dirty poetry instead of the actual reading assignment. The ones less willing to put forth work were sent to detention, or the study hall to catch up on their learning, but Harley had never done anything worth writing up.
Not yet, at least. He hoped she wouldn't turn out the same way that Patrick Rothberg had earlier in the semester.
Magiore gave a small nod as she began to read, the rest of the class turning pages to follow along. He waited until she was finished, and then placed his book back down onto his desk and picked up the whiteboard marker again, crossing around his chair to reach the wide board behind it.
"If we take what Elizabeth said here," he said, and circled one of the words of the paragraph written on the board. "And apply it to the paragraph Miss Hensley read aloud, then we'll be able to see how things correlate a lot better."
Magiore set the marker down and turned back to his class.
"Miss Hensley, do you care for this scene at all? Or would you rather Mr. Darcy have done something different instead?"
