He had completely forgot about Valentines day, most years it was nothing but another day but this year it was important. He had a girlfriend this year. They had actually met last year on a Valentine's day matchup event. And he had completely forgotten about it. To be more accurate he had just forgotten about the day itself, the endless rounds of work and training, training and work tricked him into losing track of the days. Before he even realized it was nearly the first of February and that ‘special’ day was riding up hard. He was screwed. Any good restaurant had to be booked months in advance, flowers always went up in price around now, and all the gifts were cheesey as hell, at least the ones in his price range that he really liked. He couldn’t bomb this holiday! It was the first time he really had a girlfriend for Valentines day outside of like middle school.
Luckily Amazon bailed his a** out, it cost more than he really was comfortable with but hey, he had savings for a reason. It was going to take every bit time he had to get it shipped to him, if it was delayed by even a day he would miss the holiday, but it was worth the risk so he ordered it anyway. The rest of the date was quickly figured out and Pat used every second between remembering about the holiday and the day itself to get ready. When the box with the grinning logo on the side arrived that morning he breathed a sigh of relief. With it everything was ready. Now it was just a matter of getting it all put together.
By the time the appointed hour rolled around everything was as done as it could be. Pat had it all figured out, dinner here in his place then the surprise. A simple and casual date yet he was hoping to make it a magical night as well. Even though he wanted to keep it casual he still dressed fairly nice, slacks and a navy blue polo shirt, the apartment was clean and even smelled of flowers. His neighbor gave him some again, ‘for the pretty lady’ of course. He smiled as he slipped on the apron he kept around and checked on the meal, waiting to hear the sounds of the building buzzer over the soft strains of Beethoven.

Dates were something that Fiona was rather meticulous about, because she had to be between scheduling meetings for the firms and allotting time for her classes and homework, as well as making sure she didn’t forget about engagements with friends or their birthdays. Still, she had nearly missed the very important date in the wake of everything else going on in the first couple of months after the New Year.
Even so, when it seemed like Pat had forgotten, or wasn’t planning on doing anything, she was content to let it go.
After the debacle that was the end of her last relationship, Fiona wasn’t inclined to get her hopes too high and yet...she was delighted to hear from her handsome EMT when he did reach out to her and make plans.
Her outfit was simple, made for a more casual date because he hadn’t implied that they were going to do anything too fancy, with a tunic-style shirt, cardigan, jeans and boots that went up her calves. Her hair was down and lose, a rare treat these days, with soft curls done up in favor of the occasion.
Someone else had let her into the complex, so she didn’t have to buzz in, and tentatively, with a strange set of nerves fluttering in her stomach, Fiona knocked on the door.

Pat was puttering around the kitchen when there was a knock on his apartment door he didn’t even stop to pull off his apron before opening the door, “Mark you finished…” He trailed off when he saw that the person on the other side of the threshold wasn’t his neighbor Mark but Fiona. “Fiona! I didn’t… The buzzer… Did someone…” Every one of his sentences died as he quickly realized that he either missed the buzzer, she was buzzed in by someone else, or someone let her in. None of it really mattered but it did mean he was not quite prepared. He had been hoping to have a glass of wine in hand for her, the candles lit, and everything. “I was figuring I would have a little bit more time to have everything ready but this is a welcome surprise.” He smiled at her and gestured for her to come in only to realize he still had his apron on.
It was a frilly little thing, it even poofed out at the skirt. It had been something he had created as an experiment with shapes, color blocking, and a built in crinoline to give the skirt the appropriate affect. He had found out several things while making it, like how the crinoline was itchy as hell, but overall it hadn’t turned out half bad. It still wasn’t something he wanted Fiona to see him in so with a muttered curse he struggled to get it off as fast as possible, practically strangling himself in the process. With it finally off he held it casually over one arm and tried to shrug it off, “Sorry about that. A friend’s daughter made it and she gave it to me. Come on in while I get you something to drink.” He had wanted to sneak a kiss but between the apron and the neighbor he saw walking past Pat decided that any kissing would best be done without an audience. He nodded to Mrs. Johnson and nearly snickered as she winked at him on her way past. Geez, it was like a bunch of grannies sending their grandson off on his first date.

On the other side of the door Fiona stood with her hands clasped together in front of her and a tentative smile on her lips when the door was open. Immediately, upon realizing that he hadn’t expected it to be her, she laughed, automatically reaching for him because she wanted a kiss. “Sorry,” she apologized, looking and sounding not sorry at all as her hand dropped and she stepped inside, “one of the old ladies let me in. Made some comment about finally getting to see the girl their Patty boy is mooning over?” She teased.
Mismatched eyes took note of the apron he hastily threw off, lips pressed together to keep herself from smiling too widely or laughing brightly again. She liked it, but could tell he was embarrassed and didn’t want to push it. “It’s cute. I like it,” she replied, glancing at the spot where it now laid in a crumpled heap. “Think I could get you to wear just that later?” She joked, reaching to wrap her arms around his neck and draw him down for a kiss.
Fiona didn’t care that the door hadn’t been closed yet, she had missed her boyfriend and really wanted a kiss.
“I missed you,” she mumbled after, sinking back down on her heels. Slender fingers toyed with the hair at the base of his neck and she looked at him fondly, biting her bottom lip. “Uh, happy anniversary I guess?” She laughed.

“No worries. It just surprised me that's all and honestly I shouldn’t be.” He smiled and shrugged, “she actually might have been waiting for you. It’s been an open secret in the building that you were coming by today so the bridge club probably put a spotter on a window.” The entire apartment building was like a small neighborhood. You had the grannies and the grandpas who watched over everyone, dispensing advice whether it was asked for or not. The young couple who spent more time in the bedroom then outside of it, the kids who ran up and down the halls playing, and everyone in between. It really wasn’t that much of a stretch to think that the group of older ladies had gotten it in there head to give Fiona a once over. “I don’t really bring anyone over let alone a pretty lady so,” Pat just shrugged. How could he explain that he thought Fiona got lucky. The last time one of the other residents brought a woman over she was grilled by those same ladies over tea and cookies. She came back but not to spend time with the guy, apparently the grannies play a mean game of poker every weekend, at least according to guy who lamented his single status over several beers. “I hope who ever let you in didn’t give you a hard time.” He really hoped so since he didn’t want them to scare her away.
Pat couldn’t prevent the blush that spread across his face at the term ‘cute’, yeah it was what he was going for when he made it but to be caught in it, that was just plain embarrassing but that faded rapidly at her suggestion. His gaze seemed to sharpen, even darken a little, as his mind processed her request, his body already stirring at the idea. Right then it didn’t matter that it would be scratchy as hell, he was more than willing to risk it. He willingly let Fiona pull him down for a kiss, his one arm slipping around her to pull her snug against him even as the other arm pushed the door closed, the apron falling on the floor forgotten for the moment.. Pat was so focused on the woman in his arms he didn’t hear the whistle from the hall as a neighbor caught sight of the embrace.
The door closed with a soft thunk as Fiona pulled away. “I missed you too,” He said quietly before pulling her back in for another kiss. If there weren’t things he had actually planned for the night it would be tempting to just continue on in this vain for a while but sadly that would not do her any justice. Reluctantly Pat ended the kiss, “Happy anniversary ceann daor.” His voice was husky as he reluctantly put a bit of space between their bodies, not a lot since he was still holding on to her but enough to help keep his head clear. “Are you ready for dinner?”

“It’s nothing I couldn’t handle,” Fiona replied, eagerly pressing back against Pat and enjoying how lovely it was to do so. “I think I promised a talk, but they can wait. I don’t get enough time with you as is, I’m not going to let some old ladies steal any of it.” Their lines of work often kept them apart more than she liked and she made time where she could but it wasn’t nearly as much as she wanted.
Fiona found the flush endearing but liked the sharper, darker look more with a tingling in her stomach that was almost impossible to ignore as she looked up at the man. So nearly impossible that she couldn’t help the slow glide of her tongue across her lips at the idea she’d teased that brought about such a...wonderful reaction.
Later, she had to tell herself. They couldn’t get carried away like last time and she knew that Pat had put time into planning something for them and to derail from that...even if she might have been fine with that.
Ugh, that voice sent a pleasant shiver down her spine and she whined when he put space between them. “Careful, Pat,” she warned, fingers sliding through his hair. “If you keep talking to me like that, I might want to skip dinner.” An impish smile graced her lips. “But if it’s ready, then yes. I’m ready for whatever you’ve got planned.”

Pat had to suppress a groan at her look and the feel of her fingers against his scalp. He wouldn't mind skipping dinner either but that wouldn't make a very special night for her especially since it was their anniversary. Mentally tamping down the more carnal ideas floating around in his head and returned her smile although his was a bit more strained than her impish one. “That's good. I have a surprise for you but that's for after dinner.” And of course his mind slipped right back into the gutter, “That did not come out right. I mean that while dinner is part of tonight's festivities that isn’t all there is... “ He groaned and really wished he could just sink into the floor at this point. First the apron then the audience and the dirty thoughts and now the dirty thoughts and badly phrased sentences. It was a wonder Fiona stuck around this long. “You will see what I mean and it doesn’t have anything to do with sex,” there that fixed it right? Except he wouldn’t mind some more intimint time and since she started it would shooting it down mean that it insulted her? “Not that there is anything wrong with it, just that it's not what I had planned out. But we can if you want, not that we have to, but…. I’m going to shut up now before I need a elevator to get out of the hole I seem to be digging myself.” He grinned sheepishly at her before slipping out of her hold, his hand snagging hers so he could gently lead her to the small kitchen. It opened into the small dining area where he had the table set with candles, flowers, even fancy-ish folded cloth napkins.
“Sit. Sit. I’ll get you a glass of wine. The food should be just about done.” It was simple honestly, a crockpot meal for the most part with some sides. The mostly hands off cooking had allowed him to focus on the surprise. It hadn’t been easy to set up and even now Pat was expecting a text from Mark saying that it was done. “I hope you're hungry since I made quite a bit.” He said as he poured them both a glass of red wine, he honestly had no idea if it was any good. Pat had just picked it up because the guy at the store said it went well with pot roast.

Pat might have been embarrassed but Fiona was looking at him with nothing but absolute adoration. For something that had started as a blind date, she was incredibly happy with the way things had turned out. “Pat,” she said, quiet and gentle. “It’s okay, really.” She had to suppress the bubble of laughter in her throat. “If it does or doesn’t have to do with sex, that’s fine. But sex shouldn’t be off the table. I would be disappointed by that.”
She thought it was cute when her boyfriend was flushed and flustered.
Allowing herself to be led, Fiona tried not to focus too much on the way her heart fluttered in anticipation. It had been years since she’d been seriously involved with someone like she was with Pat and the idea that he’d painstakingly planned something for her and the anniversary was nearly unbelievable. “You can relax a little, I’m already smitten with you Pat, whatever you’ve got planned, I’m sure I’ll love.”
Dinner smelt amazing and the set up was beautiful. Fiona squeezed his hand before taking a seat as he requested, carefully tucking her hair back behind her ears while accepting the glass of wine. “It smells great,” she assured him, watching as he moved across the dining room.
Accepting the glass, she sipped at it, savoring the taste on her tongue. “Really, this is all so wonderful.”

Well at least that answered that. He grinned as he dished up the meal and transferred it to the table. The pot roast sliced with baby red potatoes, onions, and carrots stood in vast contrast to the vibrantly green salad and the golden biscuits he had pulled directly from the oven. “It's not much but I hope you like it.” Like the other times he had cooked it wasn't totally out of his wheelhouse since he had done crockpot meals before but that didn't mean he was certain his skills were up to snuff. If he had been able to get a reservation at a decent place he would have chosen that over cooking in a heartbeat.
“So how has work been?” He asked as he settled into his own chair after dishing up food for them both. Sadly their schedules meant that time together wasn't horribly frequent.

“Busy, unfortunately. So many people wanting to get work done on their homes.” Fiona sighed, lamenting how her schedule often conflicted with his and how she’d like to spend more time with him, especially after a year of dating.
Settling into dinner was easy, because everything looked great and tasted fantastic. The conversation was pleasant enough, with both of them talking about their works and whatever else they thought important. When Fiona had finished eating and was certain that Pat was too, she slipped out of her seat and tried to slip onto his lap, the warm and pleasant buzz from the whine humming in her veins.
“Are we cleaning up now...or later?” She asked, sliding her hands over his shoulders and pressing the line of her nose against his neck. Aware that he had more planned, because he said that dinner wasn’t the end of things, she did her best to keep from distracting him...too much.
“You also mentioned there being more that wasn’t sex related and I have to say, I’m really curious.”

He had apparently judged the amount right since there was very little left over by the time both of them finished eating. Enough to put away but as Fi settled into his lap Pat was more than willing to write the leftovers off as waste. His arms wrapped around her to pull her closer, “Later. Definitely later.” His voice rumbled in his chest as his hands absently drifted over her slightly as his mind drifted to better things they could be doing right then only to squash those thoughts when she mentioned the surprise. Taking a bracing breath he deliberately stilled his wandering hands, “Naughty, naughty Fi. Snuggling up for some hints.” He grinned at down at her where she was practically nuzzling his neck. “You will just have to-” his comment was cut off when his pocket vibrated and he jumped slightly.
Doing his best not to shift his girlfriend too much Pat fished his cell phone from his pocket and purposely angled it so she couldn’t see it. All’s ready. Have fun. You owe me some chili and some cold beers - Mark It didn’t take long to read it, even if Fiona had seen it it didn’t reveal anything. “Well it looks like your curiosity will soon be satisfied. Are you ready?” He rose a brow at her, his grin wide and cheeky. If she wanted to stay on his lap for a little bit longer he wouldn’t dissuade her but he had a sneaking suspicion that she was more than ready to see what he was ultimately up to.

“Like you’re complaining,” she mumbled, breath hot against his neck because she couldn’t stop herself from pressing her mouth against his skin. Fiona shivered from his wandering hands, pressing more firmly against Pat in response.
Pat did a decent job in keeping her in place, though she whined a little when he stopped his hands. They were always stopping and starting it seemed. Only at his question did she draw back enough to properly look at him, blue and green eyes half lidded when she smiled. “If you want me to be ready, I’m ready,” she assured him, one hand sliding into his hair like before and the other trailing up his chest until she slid it over his shoulder and pressed her fingertips into the nape of his neck and arched her back when she dragged him down for a long and lengthy kiss.
“Come on handsome, before I get carried away and miss out.” Fiona sighed, pressing a kiss to his jaw and sliding out of his lap. Once on her feet she held her hand out to him, clearly expecting him to take it. “But after.” She said in a way that implied she was expecting they’d be able to pick up where they left off.

Pat gladly took her hand, like her he wouldn’t mind just picking up where they left off but he also didn’t want to ruin the work of so many other people in the building. So with a mental sigh, he gave the back of her hand a quick kiss before threading his fingers through hers and pulling her towards the door. The trip was a rather short one, just to the top of the building and it wasn’t even all that tall. He brought them to a stop and faced Fiona, “Close your eyes. No peeking now.” Once her eyes were closed and Pat was sure she wasn’t peeking he opened the rooftop door to reveal a little paradise. Fairy lights were strung up everywhere, bathing the whole rooftop in a soft golden glow. The space had always been a patio, a small rooftop garden nestled in the corner where quite a few residents grew various plants, but for this night only he had been able to transform it into an outdoor theater.
A wicker couch was positioned in front of a lit fire pit while a projector filled a screen with light, just waiting for them to start the movie. A bowl of chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers were waiting for them, along with the required roasting sticks. Pat gently guided Fiona out into the space murmuring, “Not yet. Keep them closed.” Before pulling her gift from the blankets that had been folded on the couch. It might have been unseasonably warm but that didn’t mean that it wouldn’t get cold if they stayed out here for the whole movie. With the small velvet jewelry box in his hand he went and stood in front of her. “Ok. Now.” After waiting for a moment, but it felt like an eternity to him, Pat shrugged, “It's not much but I hope you like it,” and opened the box. There, nestled in the confines of the box was a silver cartouche necklace. It had taken every moment to be made and shipped to him, even after paying out the a** for expedited shiping but it had gotten here. “It says Fiona, or at least that's what it is supposed to say.”

Fiona followed him easily, complying with his request for her to close her eyes easily. She trusted Pat and would let him lead her just about anywhere. “No peeking, I promise,” she replied, squeezing their joined hands and grinning at the fluttering of her heart. It had been so long since she’d felt this strongly about someone or where she had someone who was willing to do such a sweet gesture like this for her…
She didn’t even need it, but she loved that he wanted to do something special for her.
Staying patient was surprisingly difficult in that moment, with every part of Fiona crackling with excited energy as he kept making her wait, shuffling around for something.
When she opened her eyes, she had to blink several times before she saw the necklace, a quiet gasp escaping her before she was beaming at him, automatically reaching for him. “This is incredible, you’re incredible Pat.” The kiss she dragged him down for was certainly a long one, with Fiona determined to show him how much she appreciated all of his effort.
Drawing back, she swept her hair over one shoulder and looked expectantly. “Do you want to help me put it on?”

He was surprised at first when she seemed to ignore the necklace in favor of a kiss but it didn’t take long for him to change his mind. He didn’t mind at all. Pat happily enjoyed the kiss, pulling her close and sinking into the feel of her and the kiss. It was with some disappointment he backed off when Fiona brought the kiss to end but he understood, especially when she asked him to help her put it on. With a grin he pulled the necklace from it’s box and slid behind her. With deft fingers he gently placed the delicate chain around her neck and secured it. With more than just watching a movie on his mind he ran his hands down her arms, just barely caressing her, before twining them about her waist to hold her close as he murmured quietly, his breath feathering against the delicate shell of her ear, “beautiful.” It wasn’t entirely clear what he was calling beautiful, whether it was the view, the necklace, or Fiona, nor did he elaborate. Instead he just gave her a kiss on her temple, holding her close for a while longer before letting her go.
“Come on. Don’t want the fire to die down.” Pat’s smile was a bit lopsided as he came around to take her hands again and tug her towards the couch. “We can’t let all this hard work go to waste now can we?” At that moment he really did want to but he also knew just how much work setting it all up had been, not just for himself but for everyone who had helped. First it had been just general clean up, then the lights, the furniture, the electronics… there were speakers somewhere to give the whole surround sound vibe, and the fire. That was actually what the text had been for. Mark had done the last minute set up and got the fire going, all so it would be perfect for when Pat brought Fiona out here. “It's a shame that we can’t see the stars.” He said with a glance at the dark sky, with the city’s light pollution they would be lucky to spot a few of the stronger stars rather than the river Pat remembered vividly from the times he camped out west. “Anyway I think you will really enjoy the movie I found and can’t end the night without desert.” He said as he gestured to the set up.

Being with Pat, pressed up against him with his breath on her ear and the tantalizing promise of so much more after the movie, left her shivering, eyes fluttering until he let her go. Fiona reached up to caress his face, expression soft and fond, while she looked at him with adoration. It had been a very long time since someone had gone out of their way to do something like this for her and if she didn’t already think it was impossible to like someone more than she liked Pat, she would have expressed that.
“Mm, no, we probably shouldn’t,” she answered letting her gaze drift over to the rest of the set up. Her hands slid down his chest, fingers toying with the line of buttons distractedly. There were several other things she could think of that would have been as equally enjoyable as watching the movie, but her boyfriend was right. People had put a lot of work into the whole set up and she was content to enjoy it.
Besides, there would be snuggling and other things while they watched certainly.
“That’s okay, I wouldn’t be looking at them anyway,” she teased, leading him over to the couch and gently coaxing him down first before settling herself against him in the most comfortable manner she could manage. “I love all of it,” she told him once more, hands sliding against his neck when she stole one last, lingering kiss before resigning to half watch the movie.
