Who: Cesc, Dair, and Nell
Where: Vermillion Bakery
When: Marchish
Weather: Still kind of chilly, but warming up quickly

While Nell always tried to eat as healthily as possible, and was usually successful at it, there were times when even she couldn't resist the clarion call of something sweet and entirely unhealthy. Well. Everything in moderation, right? And so she found herself happily strolling down the street towards a place that she knew she would be guaranteed a good treat and possibly catch up with some friendly faces she hadn't seen in quite some time.

Her trip had some ulterior motives to it as well, and when she caught sight of the bright facade of the bakery she stopped and waited for Dair to catch up. It had been a while since he had been out somewhere new and met some new faces, and she couldn't think of a better way to kill two birds with one stone. She held the door open for him, though she had to give him a bit of a nudge so she could walk in after him before making a beeline towards the counter.

Dair, however, slowed to a stop somewhere among the tables, his attention drawn fully towards the ceiling and the small wooden birds that were hung from there. His head turned slightly from one side to the other as if he were watching something move on the ceiling, his mouth forming a small 'o' of amazement.

A little less than a month had passed from Cesc’s return, and there were a few things that were still ‘working themselves out,’ as Cesc put it to himself. Customers would still come in now and then and exclaim at seeing him, ask him where he was, or tell him they’d never gone such a long stretch without seeing his shift. It had continually taken him off-guard at first (especially those who said they’d seen his disappearance on the local news, and where had he gone?), but those interactions were becoming fewer and further between. Now, mostly, people who remembered him would just try not to mention their surprise at his new legs.

Ever shift free of such curiosity was a blessing. Working at the bakery was familiar and comforting. Having employment was so present and easy, letting him slide back into his life as he remembered it. And every day, to his immense relief, was getting easier.

The door jingled as it opened and Cesc finished pouring a to-go coffee and handing it to a waiting patron. He looked up to greet the incoming customers and stopped, open-mouthed, as he saw who entered.

The sight of the Frei made his ears lift and his jaw slacken. Whomever he was, he was busily inspecting the ceiling’s decorations, as well as… something… else--er… a bug of some kind that Rhedefre couldn’t quite see, maybe? But whatever he was looking at was of far less interest to the stag than the person looking.

He was so much different than any other Raevan Cesc had seen. He had black sclera like Vesna--wait. No, he didn’t. He had black everything. No pupils to track, no iris. Cesc knew that now and then, when he fed or overcharged, his own eyes would melt into gold or white, but he’d never been on the viewing end of such a thing, and certainly had never met anyone whose eyes were in that constant state. It was, if he was honest, more than a little eerie. The Frei was pale, with what seemed like antlers of his own crowning his black hair, and wings that recalled Eth’s in their branching glory, and what was that on his hands?

Rhedefre inclined his head and continued to look--until decorum suddenly shook him, and he straightened and noticed the woman who came forward behind the Frei. His mouth split into a smile as he recognized her--the New Year’s Eve party, he’d fought her in the snowball fight--and lifted a hand in greeting.

”Hey, good morning! Good to see you again--Nell, right?” he said warmly.

"That's right! It's been awhile!" There was something different about him, she thought, but it was hard to pinpoint exactly what it was since it had been quite some time since they had met (plus the counter was blocking his legs, something she definitely would have noticed as something new). "I figured it was time for me to finally give my diet a little break, but mostly I wanted to get...sorry, hold on," She finally noticed that Dair was no longer following her and skipped back a few quick steps to give him a gentle nudge on the arm and gesture towards the counter.

Dair, meanwhile, jumped when Nell touched him, his attention so focused on the ceiling that he hadn't noticed her approach. He looked quickly from her towards the counter, squinting as if he was looking into a bright light for a moment. This time, though, he followed after Nell as she went back to the counter, a look of mild shock on his face.

"Cesc, this is Dair," she stepped to the side a bit so she could nudge him a bit closer, a large, proud smile on her face. "I've been meaning to take him around to meet everyone, but we've been a little busy getting settled in."

"Hello," his voice was barely over a whisper, and sounded even quieter compared to Nell's much more lively one. "It's nice to meet you."

"It certainly has been! Not so much snow for a rematch now, I guess," replied Cesc with a grin. He did not want to be impolite by staring at her charge, and so he kept his eyes on her until she popped back toward the Frei to usher him forward to the counter.

Bark? Yeah. Yes, almost certainly. Bark. It was bark on the frei's hands. Cesc's eyebrows lifted, impressed: Amity was bark, wasn't she? And yet he'd never seen anything like this on her. He was more tree than she, more tree than Lorin's leshy, than Eth's tea. He was as if part of the forest had become sentient and pulled itself up from moss and root and wandered into the world. If Dair was surprised to see Cesc, Cesc was just as surprised with Dair, but his parted lips slowly lifted into a warm, blooming smile.

"Dair, what a pleasure. My name is Rhedefre--or Cesc, if you prefer," he said. He looked at Nell, still smiling broadly,
and waved a quick hand. "Not at all--thank you guys for thinking of us and coming by when you could! I know settling in can be a process. I hope it's been treating you both well?"

He turned back toward Dair with the question.

"I'll just have to take a raincheck for next time." Once she had introduced Dair, though, she stepped a bit to the side so she wouldn't be too much in the way of the two raevans.

Dair, meanwhile, didn't have many examples of other raevans to find many similarities between Cesc and those that he had met before. True, he had antlers that were passingly similar to his own, but had none of the plantlike aspects to him that seemed to dominate the handful of other raevans he had met so far. And none of them were quite as shining as he was. There was something that was comforting about him though, and he could feel himself relaxing marginally and returning his smile.

"It's nice to meet you, Rhedefre." He gave the bakery another quick glance, as much of a way to inconspicuously blink the glare out of his eyes as well as get a better look at the place. "It's been going well enough I think?" Nell, off to the side, nodded enthusiastically. "Did you make the decorations in here?"
