Cadmus had been reluctant to return to the playground; any encounter he had seemed to always devolve into a fight, and he would come home battered and sticky with cranberry mush. It didn't help he would kind of pick them, too; letting out his frustrations on a wayward lieutenant or youma was so much easier than actually taking the time to process his family issues. Anger was always better utilized in a punch.
That night, though he wasn't itching for a fight, the urge still lingered and was a little hard to ignore. So he decided to let the happenstance come to him. Perched atop his favorite location on the jungle gym, Cadmus had exchanged staring at his senshi phone to eyes glued and brow furrowed to his 3DS. He'd been dying to play the new Pokemon game, but juggling schoolwork, patrols, and the fact he should've outgrown it by now (as postulated by his brother) left him unable to. At least senshidom kept his anonymity.
Cadmus's concentration on his Incineroar was broken as he became aware of an energy signature. The slight satisfaction he felt then seemed to wane greatly when a wash of familiarity came with it, and then his lips pulled down into a frown.
"You, again?" he said, cursing his luck beneath his breath. "Crap."

Titanite only rarely got the craving to go to the park. She hadn't had much a chance of late, what with her attempts to figure out how her arms and legs worked again, and her avoidance of the many people who regretted her promotion to Captain quite a bit more than she herself did. Overall, she rather liked the new power, though it made some things much less fun. For example, she was expected to participate in non-Lieutenanty stuff like paperwork and s**t. Nope. She was running from that as fast as she could. Papers and leadership or something- no, she was meant for the more punchy sorts of activities. It was known. So tonight she was taking a break from hiding by going to the park. Shahar loved the park. Adored the park. And yet the park was infested. "Oh," she said mildly, staring up the jungle gym, "It is you." one hop took her up, the Captain, now, peering at the red-headed cranberry and its 3DS. "Are you actually playing Pokemon? You know there are a hundred better games, right?"

Seldom had the boy lost his patience as simply Caelum; he was learning mindfulness from his Big Brother influence and trying his darnedest not to lose his cool. He'd become tolerant of his elder brother and father, but if there was one person he didn't have the patience for, it was this blue-haired Negaverse captain (when she rank up?) who got the best of him twice in the past.
Was this going to be another?
He scowled at her, freckled cheeks flushed red from his surpressed anger, and he scooched around on his butt to stare at the city skyline instead of her blue hair and her blue face and all that other blue.
"Yea, well, that's just your opinion, and you can think whateverrr you want. I like Pokemon. It's fun. Super fun, and I bet you're only saying that 'cause, like, you've never played it before," he harrumphed.
Infinities i'm so sorry this took forever!!

It was far to easy to hue hue hue and reach out to ruffle the bright hair presented to her by sulking kiddo. "That is my opinion, and you are right. I have not played Pokemon since Pokemon Yellow." she leaned in a bit closer and added, "I was seven, and I did not like it as much as Red and Blue. Turns out it was a good thing I did not like it." By the time the next game was coming out and her father could have sent it to her, the fatwā against it had been issued in Saudi Arabia and taken up in Egypt, and it just was not worth it, so her mother had told him not to send the games. Instead, Shahar had been neatly pressed off to other franchises. It had wound up for the best; she had greatly expanded her taste in video games. It led to her affection for FPS and paintball. It led to her spending time watching cartoons, and those other few hobbies she had that were not drinking and fuc- well. "Just because Pokemon games have a high score on metacritic does not mean it is a good game," she informed him sagely. "Have you even tried the Xenoblade game? Do you play on any other consoles? I have been gaming since before you were a- what do they say over here- a speckle in the eye?"

Cadmus's counterargument to the vast superiority of contemporary Pokemon games was stymied by the ruffle of his hair, and he squawked out a note before hastily slapping Titanite's hand away. Why. Why did everyone feel inclined to touch The Hair. By no means was he a narcissist, but it took an eternity every morning to get his amaranth locks to settle in just the right slope, and Titanite ruined that equation by simply existing.
She seemed to ruin Everything.
"D-damn it, stop! I'm not a dog!" he yapped like a chihuahua, glaring at her. "A-a'sides, the older games suck butts. You can't do any of the awesomer things, like Mega Evolution and stuff. Plus, internet battles! That's the best part, you oldbies had to use, like, bungee cables to even trade for evolutions. How stuuupid."
The boy rolled his eyes and settled himself back to half-ignoring, half-pouting at her as she questioned his video game past. For the first time, she earned an expression from him that wasn't wholly annoyed, but slightly contemplative. "Who cares what those gaming websites say? Opinions of games should totally be, like, subjectatory. Er. Subjective? Y-yea, subjective. So while I've never heard of Xenoblades, it might... be good... but I'm not saying 'cause you mentioned it! Certainly not!" He harrumphed for the umpteenth time, but added, "...And I don't, okay. My 3DS is all I have, and I like to play alone, by myself. Playing with others seems like a big... pain. I don't wanna... play with anyone else..."
Just his tone seemed to note far too many nights alone and birthday parties not invited to.
"Mario Kart was made by some megalomaniac to break up friendships, anyhow."

Oh- he slapped at her hand and Titanite laughed without shame, dropping down next to him, leaning in to consider his 3DS with interest. "I do not ruffle the hair of dogs," she told him, "only little humans. Most dogs do not have hair, anyways. They have fur." His disdain for the older Pokemon games made her gasp in (only partly true) affront, and she clucked her tongue at him. " You suck butts," she informed him maturely. "Mega Evolutions are an unnecessary amount of Pokemon, and internet battles too. Back in my day we did not have the cheat codes, either. And if you like to play alone, by yourself, it makes little sense that you would care about internet battles." The fact his 3DS was all he had made her a little bit sad; expansion into other systems at an impressionable age was so very important. "I agree with you, though," she said after a moment. "Game choice is incredibly personal, but you will need to find someone to refer you in the proper gaming direction, or you will keep thinking classics are dumb. Have you even played Zelda?" she sniffed, peering at his handheld. MarioKart was pretty evil. "Mario Kart," she informed him, "Was made for playing while you are drunk. Something which you should not be for many years, Cranberry."

Cadmus's eyes narrowed, and he steadily leaned away as the captain leaned it; desperate for her to stand sixteen feet away instead of mere inches. Her energy signature felt icky so close in his presence, that with a single prod to the cheek, he felt he might corrupt instantly.
Well, that, and he'd never been so close to someone of the female persuasion before. It made him Really, Really Nervous, and he wasn't sure of why, but it obviously had to be because she was an agent of Chaos. Had to be.
While he agreed (somewhat) to her arguments against Mega Evolutions and cheat codes, he seemed to draw the line with Internet battles. "Y-yea, but I don't need to see the other person to battle them. No shouts of how weak my Pokemon are or whatever. Hmmph." His lips parted momentarily when asked of Zelda, and begrudgingly, he said, "I've heard of it, yea. Never, like, played it. I don't know where to start, there's like hundreds of games."
"Why would you...?" he began, but quickly quieted himself. As far as he knew, alcohol was a poison to the masses. "It's Cadmus, not Cranberry, gosh. You don't hear me calling you, like, Blue-Haired Hag or whatever. Call me my name.""

Berry leaning away didn't bother the Captain; her long torso merely followed him, leaning on to keep her position in relation to his screen. It was times like this that she enjoyed the extra length her height gave her; she barely had to stretch, yet. Her head tilted, a predatory bird considering his 3DS like she was going to eat it. She was sure she could probably pick up a couple titles from her nephews a kid of Barry's age might like. Being more than a decade apart from his age probably put her in a different generation of gaming. And then there were the other differences- like the fact she was, arguably, evil. "Seeing the enemy is always important," she told him firmly. "Then if they mock you, you get to watch their face fall when they realize you are about to wipe the floor with them, and perhaps feed on their tears as you smear their lifeless Pokemon across the arena." or kick their headless body or exploded body or however she had killed them in a 1v1. "Start with the game you can," she said dryly. "You only have a 3DS? Grab those. Play them all." tilting her head, she said- "when is your birthday? Perhaps I will give you my used games." He seemed to take offense to being called cranberry; with a laugh, she said "Berry Berry Quite Contrary- How does that poem go?" she leaned back, and said, "you could call me hag, but then I would be obliged to play the part. Hags devour naughty little children out past their bedtimes. Like in fairy tales."

The boy reflexively pressed the 3DS's screen to his chest and scowled at her, expecting something much more than just curiosity. Was she scoping him out, awaiting the time when his defenses were most lowered to strike for his starseed? Was she trying to toe the line as 'friend,' only to betray him in the end and take him as fodder? Even if Titanite came off kind of friendly (read: kind of), she was still a member of the Negaverse.
Still very much evil and chaotic as the rest of them.
He frowned deeply at her words, wondering if those too were laced with some kind of layered meaning. "T-that's kinda a gross way to put it," he said, wincing. "But I kinda get what you're saying. That totally sounds fun to do, except the... tears and smearing part. Eugh."
Cadmus listened intently for a bit, but stopped just short of giving his birth date. "Okay, wait, wait, hold up," he said with a frown again. He stood up now, pocketing his 3DS and folding arms across his chest. "What are you getting at? I mean, it'd be... nice... to get games, more games, but the nickname? The laughing? I really do think you're sizing me up to e-eat me, erm, my starseed! A-and I won't fall for niceness from a Negaverse agent, nuh-uh, no way!"

Titanite leaned back as Berry stood up. What was she getting at? That was a very good question indeed. "You might not be wrong, Berry." she admitted after a moment. "You are very wise not to trust the Negaverse. Not to trust me. One day I may be in a position where it is you or me. Where you are across the battlefield, and I cannot turn around or forfeit that which I hold most valuable in the world- my life." She shifted, and pursed her lips. "But you remind me of my family. Presumably American, redheaded, and brash, but still familiar. And I enjoy video games. If I wanted your starseed, little Berry, I would have had it by now. I have been close enough many times."

The boy felt a tremble work his way up his spine. Sure, he had his defenses up, but he was relaxing himself slowly around her. To him, the Negaverse were the definition of scum, but here was one being overly friendly. Too friendly.
He was right in thinking her a weirdo. In fact, they were like direct opposites; pink to blue, Order to Chaos, years apart, and, uh, boobs.
However, Titanite did make a point. There were many opportunities for her to take it. Why the wait? Maybe there was some truth to her words.
"That's a weird thing to say," he said, kicking at nonexistent dirt on the jungle gym. "I don't think of you as, like, family or anything, but I guess, you're, like..." He blushed and considered the city skyline again. "Nice?"

She could see the young man making up his mind, considering her words with a critical mind, and she let him, tilting her head back to stare up at the sky. Out there, they were no longer stars. There were alien homeworlds. Species and worlds not like Earth. Relics and tombs to explore. "I am a weird person," she told him with a smile, feeling the jungle gym quiver with his kick. "And it is not that I think of you as family, but that I have.... many nieces and nephews. I have fourteen siblings, you see, and many have kids your age. It makes me think of those things I have not seen in many years. It makes me think of if my family would be proud of me." They would not. "I think you are very pleasant as well, little Berry- when you are not spewing cranberries in my face."

For the first time in his life, Cadmus felt guilty about spewing cranberries at her. Though he did feel it was kind of warranted; she did tickle him until he threw up. He let out a deep sigh and retook his seat on the jungle gym, still a little tense but nonetheless losing a bit of his fear around her.
Never thought I'd be having myself a normal conversation with a Negaverser, he thought, considering his words again. She's definitely, definitely, definiteeely weird.
"So, like, is that why you're a Negaverse agent?" he said, looking at her curiously as he hugged knees to his chest. "Your family? To, like, protect them? 'Cause I've heard that was a thing with Negaverse agents. They think the White Moon guys, or Order really, are a threat or something. To Earth. 'C-cause I just gotta say, I don't mean to hurt Earth or anything. Sure, I live on Earth now, but would rather be on my homeworld. If my dad and brother weren't here, yea, I'd definetely... call my asteroid home."

His question was complicated, but Titanite was not going to avoid the answer. "No," she said after a moment. "I am not part of the Negaverse because of my family. I am part of the Negaverse because one day I ran afoul of a man who could have killed me, but instead decided to make me like him. To use me for my knowledge of the streets. To show me what, for a long time, I thought was a better way. He was my General-King, and when he was called to Destiny City, it was to be my privilege to join him." She shifted her weight on the jungle gym, shifting to curl her arm over her belly, slowly wilting inwards on herself instead of expanding ever out. "I have seen more cruelty from my own side than from your little White Moon. Many of my comrades kill people, cull and harvest them for a goal I cannot see. I know you are supposed to be a danger, yet many of you..." They attacked her out of fear. A reasonable one. They were hesitant to let her get close, as was appropriate. "I hid a long time from the indoctrination of our Queen, and I am sure my views would not be looked kindly upon. I drank, and called it mourning. I lazed, and called it distance. I stayed, because they know who I am, and about my family, and how to hurt the things I love if they think I betray them and live."

Though Cadmus thought himself rather mature of his age, there were just some complexities of life he couldn't understand. He didn't know how to describe her situation. Tied up in knots? Tethered? Freedom with a leash? The Negaverse knew control, but that couldn't be all of them. Many of Chaos enjoyed the pain they inflicted; that was the only margin the teen knew. To see a Negaverse display any emotion besides fury or sadistic enjoyment... bothered him.
It bothered him even more to feel for her.
They're not human, he had decided once, as a chibi, when a lieutenant threatened with a metal bookmark to his neck. They don't think even of the White Moon as people.
But now? Now he knew they were exceptions. A bitter pill to swallow, but an imperative one. He would have to accept that.
The boy's brows furrowed as he tried to think of something to say to her. Just anything, wracking his temple with a knuckle, but the only thing this seemed to elicit was a deep sigh. Eventually, he frowned at her, but there was certainly sympathy in his young eyes.
"T-that's tough," he said. "Like, the Negaverse is scary. Even I've had some bad experiences with them, but that doesn't even compare being part of them..." Cadmus stared down at his gloved hands, clasped to each other. "I'm sorry if I... probed too far or something. I-I just wanted to know, but I kinda understand. D-do you, like, w-want a hug or something? I don't know how to comfort people well, but if I opened any old wounds or something, it's... the only way I know how to say sorry..."
