Groaning, slapping at her blaring alarm, Jada thumped out of her cold, empty bed, scraping across freezing hardwood and into her bathroom, groaning and splashing her face with cold water. Early morning- time to jog. Same as you do every morning, Jada. Try to keep fit, and keep a magical organization run by a megalomaniac from taking over the world. All in a days work.

There was a growing itch under her skin of late. Her last brush with risk- Scholomance's starseed being ripped out, Cinnabar's fury and the way the youma had dug at her. The itch that said there was something more she could be doing. This house had been where some of the Blood Moon had come, practiced, been a team. Losing them, losing Fallon, losing... so many. Her mind was consumed with it, and her body...

She needed to run. Brush and braid hair first, which was exercise on its own; brush teeth, get clothes on, check on the twins, and out the door. She was feeling the bike today- needing speed, needing that lurking need under her skin to subside into nothing- but the weather was saying no, so instead she took the Cabriolet. Sacrifices. The car responded quickly and she hit the gas, guiding the car into the city at speeds some might deem unsafe, parking and stepping out.

Stretch. Inhale. Exhale. Tuck henshin pen from purse to sock, tuck purse under seat. Set phone for an hour. Hook keys to the loop in her pocket, and choose her trail. Jada began her jog slowly, trying to leave the itch in her veins and her demons behind.

Dorian's Fitbit vibrated on his wrist every morning precisely at 5:00 (with the exception of Sundays- on Sundays he slept until 8:00). And then five minutes later the alarm clock on his bedside table would buzz. And then five minutes after that he'd have no choice but to get out of bed to shut off the alarm on his desk.

The dog woke with him, tail wagging, needing a pee.

He squished her beautiful face and kissed her big head and -a quick change of clothes later- the pair of them were out the door, Dorian hooking the leash to Murphy's collar as they made their way down the stairs.

There were a lot of things wrong with Destiny City. Crime was always high. Calls at the crisis center were constantly backlogged. People died a lot. But rent was cheap, and he'd been able to find an attractive apartment building near a park that was so eager for tenants that they did not fuss too much over his having a dog as large as Murphy. She was a brindle pitbull- a rescue with a pretty pink collar who took up most of Dorian's bed and often stole all the covers.

They ran together every morning. (Except on Sundays. On Sundays they ate waffles and watched cartoons together. The best chair was always claimed by the cat.)

The nature trails in the park near his apartment were tended well and often. Dorian knew because he was a part of a volunteer group that took care of the grounds - helping to cut the grass and gather litter. One time he'd even stumbled across a dead body that was later declared a homicide.

A thin layer of fog held the grounds hostage this morning. It made everything felt wet. Dorian was suddenly glad that he'd put on a second sweater before stepping outside.

"Alright, Murph," he grinned down at his favourite girl, who grinned right back up at him, "let's go."

Her jog started off quiet, and pleasant. It was still a bit dark, but not so much that she couldn't see. She had run these paths many times before; even in the thin veneer of fog, she knew where to place her feet, and she kept her head up, smiling to those few people she passed. The nature trails passed by several neighborhoods here- technically, Jada was the interloper on the property, and the least that she could do was be nice to the people she was passing in the early morning.

There was a low chill, but she let it cling to her bones without complaint, leaving her jacket tied about her hips as she made her way through the trees, relishing the cold air freezing her face and bare upper arms. There weren't many people around yet, but enough; mostly people she had seen before, a few walking their dogs, a few people perhaps getting in some exercise before they had to go in to work.

As a civilian she couldn't sense the dangers that had decided to lurk in the woods this foggy morning; she could only smile and nod to those people that she happened to make eye contact with, her music humming low enough in her ears she would be able to hear if someone yelled for her attention- she hoped. She was aura-blind to the creature which lurked in the trees, dropping only occasionally to the ground, shaking branches like a breeze.

If some of the dogs were uncomfortable, she did not know them well enough to notice, or look hard enough to care. No one stopped her jog to comment on the rustling trees this morning. She moved past those few she met, ignorant.

Perhaps, then, it was fortunate that as she passed a young man and his dog, tossing the man a short, side-long smile and nod, that her keys fell unnoticed from the loop on her running pants, landing in the path behind her.

There was something off about the park today. Something about the air - or the trees. He wasn't sure. They grew thick. So dense in some places that the park seemed almost a little forest at times. Animals lived in the branches and the bark and the roots. Murphy liked to chase the squirrels. Sometimes - when there was no one else around- Dorian would take her off the leash and let her sniff around as she pleased.

Today was not one of those days. Murphy was tense in a way that he had not known her to be since he'd brought her home. She stopped often along the path, ears upright, and did not seem to smile - the way that dogs did when they were so happy to be outside.

"What's wrong, Murph?"

He asked at the same time Jada jogged passed them, eyes lifting from the top of his dog's head to meet Jada's stare. He gazed back at her, surprised, and then went to collect whatever it was that she had dropped.

"Oh, um. Hey!" Dorian's voice cracked on the last word. He did not shout after beautiful women in the park. "You've dropped your keys!"

It was the man's surprise that made her take extra note of him. Most people just smiled and nodded back, didn't actively meet her gaze and... keep it? Did he recognize her? Was he someone she should know? Oh dear, oh dear- just her luck. Well, he didn't seem to speak to her as she passed by, and she was congratulating herself on the fact she wouldn't have to be-

Hey! You've dropped your keys! Rat-finkles! Hopefully they didn't actually know each other. She could probably have kept running, if she was that sort, but she may as well live up to her potential shame. It wouldn't do to run away from a cute guy, anyhow, especially not in the woods at somewhere around a** o'clock in the morning.

Jada tugged her earbuds out, turning to give the man a bright smile, bright violet eyes landing on the keys he had collected. "I didn't even notice them falling out," she told him, and rolled her shoulders as she walked back to join him, "Thank you. That would have been a really unwelcome surprise. Must have been luck you saw it." His dog looked quite attentive, but didn't seem to be glaring at her, so she moved into range, holding out her hand. No, she didn't think she knew him; he wasn't ringing any bells in her mental Rolodex of faces to names.

She could hear, now that the buds were out of her ears. It seemed to be a really windy day, but she didn't see as much swaying as she might have thought, for the noise. Huh.

In the underbrush, however, two beady little eyes peered out, staring menacingly at the dog. It hated dogmeats! Nasty dogmeats. Human meats were best. It waited until Human Meats were looking away from the trees before leaping back into the branches, seeking a better angle.

Murphy was well trained and well behaved. She would not have jumped at Jada on an ordinary day, but would have wagged her tail and smiled at her. Today she was not interested in Jada at all. Her attention was fixed on the trees; whole body tense. She had yet to start straining on her leash, but Dorian was concerned that she might try to take off on him and so looped the thick leather lead around his wrist twice more.

He suspected that she’d scented either a skunk or a porcupine. Certainly some kind of animal. It was a predictable hazard- when you walked your dog so close to nature, risks like that were to be expected. He crouched to his knees. Murmured something that was supposed to be comforting, long fingers of rubbing at her ears. He offered Jada her keys with the hand of his other arm without looking at her.

“I help keep the path clean,” he said, as if that explained why he’d found her keys. “But I saw these fall out of your pocket.”

Murphy exploded forwards, barking, muscles rolling visibly under sleek fur. She was broad and strong and pulled towards the trees with such force that Dorian ended up tasting the earth, chin grating against a couple of loose trail pebbles. He held fast to Murphy’s leash, fingers turning white, and his shoulder screamed.

The dog stopped straining, but did not relax. She remained at the edge of the path, tense as a warrior before battle, a low rumbling in her throat. Fear dropped like ice in Dorian’s belly. He trusted Murphy’s instincts more than his own.

“There’s something in there,” he said to Jada, getting -warily- to his feet.

Nasty, nasty dogmeats. Disgusting dogmeats, with their ears and their sharp eyes and their noses that could sniff if. It would eat the dogmeats once its job was done. Eat, eat! Bad dogmeats. And what it ate, it would gain as strength. Yes. And in the brush it bared its teeth at the creature and scrambled up into the trees again, swinging from branch to branch like a shadow. Behind it, the dogmeat burst into motion, trying to chase the youma into a place the beast could not follow. And around, both trying to taunt the beast and begin to acclimate prey to its presence.

Jada had just gripped the keys when the man and his dog flew forward, scraping into the gravel, and she gave a short, sharp sound of surprise. Jada was a cat owner, not a dog owner, but she couldn't imagine a squirrel getting that much attention. Skunk? Stray bear? And, of course, her mind wandered to an option that was something distinctly worse. The woman had lived in Destiny City a long time, even if not recently- she didn't like the idea of worse.

A sidestep undid her shoelace, and a kneel let her move henshin pen from sock to pocket under the guise of tying her shoe. "Thank you for picking up my keys," she told him with a quick smile, pushing back up to her feet as he did. "Are you sure your dog isn't-" violet eyes flicked to the animal, to the sheer aggression aimed elsewhere, and even she knew it didn't sound very hopeful when she ventured- "Maybe a squirrel?" Yeah... a squirrel. "Which way's your car? We can walk to whichever car is closer if you want and do a ride-share to the other one."

Or not. Something fell, in the darkness, and there was a heavy thud, and a body started to unfold- almost as tall as Jada herself, and with much longer arms. It looked like a monkey, but black as pitch in the dark, and with what looked more like smoke than fur. But teeth gleamed white as it opened its mouth and screamed between the humans and the dog.

Dorian opened his mouth to explain that his car was parked back at his apartment. That he didn't need to drive because he lived close by - when the thing that had caught Murphy's attentioned unfurled itself from the trees in a flash of teeth and smoke.

All of the blood drained from Dorian's face. He gazed past Jada at the thing, mouth falling open in horror, and almost lost his arm again when Murphy tried to launch herself at the... monster (because that was what it was, wasn't it?) that had crawled out of the belly of the woods. Its scream tore him open with fear, spit from the creature's mouth landed on his face and in his mouth and Dorian was so overcome with revulsion that he heaved up his breakfast on the ground.

The monster screamed again, jaws open wide, and stalked towards the trio on the path.

Murphy tried to put herself between both humans and the creature, teeth bared, a fierce growl rumbling out from the back of her throat. Dorian's whole heart was in that sound. He tried to yank her back, took hold of the leash with both hands this time.

"No, Murph, we've got to get out of here."

There was a shriek coming from behind her, and her companion was growing distressingly pale under his skin, mouth falling open, and jerking forward, as his brave little pupperoni decided that protecting her person was more important than getting out of Dodge. Brave, foolish pup. Jada's hand reached into her pocket, wrapping around her henshin pen, and she spun just in time to catch spittle in the face. Gross! Youma cooties. There was retching behind her, and Jada's own stomach heaved in sympathy- she swallowed against the sympathy nausea and roll of her own stomach that said 'hey, we can vomit together!' She took a step back at the monster's advance, reaching out to try and tug at the dog's leash, to help pull her back as the youma advanced.

"Getting out of here is a great idea," Jada agreed, not looking back at the other, taking one step at a time backwards, until she was beside Dorian, then a step behind him. The monster's beady eyes were on the dog, and it reached out with one long arm- Jada couldn't see, from here, if it was to try and grab the dog or strike it, and she didn't know that she wanted to see what might happen one way or another. The length of those arms, and the- that squish, underfoot- had she stepped in Dorian's vomit? She supposed it could be worse...

She could fight, but it would lead to one of two things. Dorian thinking he'd been abandoned, when she fled for cover, and making some brave, foolish mistake; or her revealing herself as Scylla to someone she didn't know. Even Negaverse agents could smile nicely and have cute dogs, though she doubted most of them vomited with fear at the sight of their own monsters. It was probably the vomit that decided her- as she tugged out her henshin pen, and stepped back around Dorian not as Jada, in her exercise outfit, but as Sailor Scylla, the power crackling hungrily through her veins.

It was always alive, and she could feel the magic spinning inside her, putting a spring in her step as she practically bounced towards the bigger, angrier monster, that itch under her skin gone- washed away in a flood of anticipation. "Murphy," she told the dog, "You should take Dorian and go." The creature was coiling, hunching, beady eyes peering between all three potential targets- and then it was airborne, going for meat.

Something in the air next to him changed. Dorian had no magic of his own - didn't know what energy signatures were, and lacked the equipment necessarily with which to detect them, but he didn't need to be magical to feel Scylla. His eyes widened when she stepped around him, jaw clenched so tight there was a headache starting at the back of his head.

She was the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen.

"We can't just leave you here," Dorian murmured, though there was a part of him that wanted to. He felt ashamed of that piece, the taste of sick still in his mouth, memory carrying him back to a dirty living room from once upon a time ago.

'I told you I don't like weakness.'

It licked at his brain. Made Dorian wipe his mouth and start getting to his feet, whole body just wrecked from trying to hold Murphy back. His heart swelled with love for her at the same time he was swearing inwardly at himself for adopting such a tank of a dog.

Murphy was too preoccupied with the monster that had crawled out of the woods to listen - or be dazzled by - Scylla. Her lips pulled back in a snarl, shoulders lowering, powerful hindquarters launching her into the air at the same time the youma came for them. Dorian had to let her go - his grip on the leash was already tentative, his shoulder howling where she'd yanked it out of its socket. Murphy sank her teeth into the youma's calf mid-air, tried dragging it back to the ground, careless of her own safety.

We can't just leave you here, her companion said, and one corner of Scylla's mouth turned up- but that was all she had time for. The dog was going after the slavering gorilla-monkey-oily-monster-thing, and threatening to drag her master with her, to haul the young man forward as she launched into the air. He let go, but that didn't stop the dog, or slow her at all, from digging teeth into tainted, chaos-infused flesh.

The youma's cry of pain and fury slammed into Scylla's ears, ringing and painful, disorienting her. Shrill, and louder than she might have thought for being an open area. The small woman stumbled like she'd been physically pushed, as her senses shifted to focus on the dizzying wave of nausea and pain in her head. She didn't have time to indulge. Eyes trying to focus back around the sound of her own eardrums ringing, she could see those long arms reaching out for their attacker, massive hands intending to yank the animal from its flesh like one would pull a thorn.

"Scylla's Hunger," she choked out, gasping through the nausea, and let the magic force its way through her, the conduit. She didn't bother trying to control it, or tame it, or direct it. Dog good, monster bad, kill. Feed. Intention and instruction were simple enough things for the lurking beast under her skin to notice, and respond to, while she shook her head again, looking to the human. Her stomach turned as her ears adjusted again, trying to recover- her senshi recovery speed? Or that she'd been moving so close? Would he even be able to hear her if she spoke?- and she moved closer to Dorian.

Behind her, the ground around the monster and the canine erupted in a mass of tentacles, six strong, starving arms reaching for the corrupted creature, the toothy suckers latching into the youma's flesh as they gripped, tearing.

"Won't leave anyone," Scylla told Dorian, and her voice was a lot louder than it would have been if her ears weren't still ringing. Jada didn't know if he could even hear her, so her small hands were already reaching out for him. "We'll all go, you first." And the dog- she'd haul the dog if she had to. If she could jump a couple stories into the air in this form, she could sure as ******** wrangle an angry dog. Probably.

Something was happening. Something was coming. Dorian could feel it in the earth under his chin; a rumbling from somewhere deep below, and which appeared, somehow, to echo out of the woman who'd rescued him. He swore under his breath, as in awe of her as he was terrified, and then the forest floor in front of them ripped asunder.

He had heard tales about the sort of magic and monsters that haunted Destiny City and had tried, as a matter of course and reason, to brush them off as urban legends. Stories teenagers told each other late at night for a good scare. But this was real - it was happening right in front of him, as Dorian watched Scylla with his sad green eyes, he could not say whether he was more frightened of her or the creature that had attacked them from the trees.

But Dorian harboured a healthy fear for all terrible and beautiful things, and it was clear to him that Scylla was both of those things.

He nodded when she turned back for him. Pushed himself off the ground with his good arm and, with the sort of pure fury that can only be born out of love and terror, roared at Murphy to heel and return to him. The dog -forced to the edge of the mass of earth by Scylla's flailing tentacles- looked back at her man, and then started limping back to him.

"Thank god," Dorian exhaled, scrambling to kiss her face and take up her leash again. He looked to Scylla. Wanted to ask her who she was. How'd she made the ground open up like that. But he didn't, because she was right. They needed to get the ******** out. He stared at her, eyes shining, traces of dirt still on his lips and chin, "thank you."
