Linnith sat at the edge of the cliff, legs dangling off the edge and eyes cast off into the distance. Had it not been for her tear stained cheeks and slump of her shoulders, one might think she was just resting and enjoying the view. However, the sights in front of her were the last thing on Linniths’ mind. She brought her fingers up to her cheek, brushing lightly over the bruise that had already formed around her left eye and down onto her cheek. Wincing, she pulled her fingers away and clenched her eyes shut against a fresh wave of tears. Home life had been rough in the past, especially since her father had first caught her wearing a dress. And it had only gotten worse as Linnith grew older and more rebellious against her parents — especially her father. It had even lead to abuse rather quickly. According to Linnith’s father, ‘no son of his was going to be a pansy’. She gingerly wiped the tears away and opened her eyes. Instantly her gaze darted down and thoughts she didn’t like swept through her mind. Would it hurt much to land on the hard rocks several feet below? Would she suffer? Or would it be a quick end? Would she even die? Was there a fate worse than death? Her wing was messed up, a useless appendage that wouldn’t allow her to fly no matter what her instincts would tell her on the way down. She leaned forward, fingers gripping at the edge of the cliffs as she contemplated throwing herself off. It would end the pain. She would no longer be around to make her parents’ life complicated. Her father could say it was an accident and mourn the loss of his ‘son’. It would just be so easy to end it all, here and now.

It had been a long time since Whan had wandered further than the market. Lately he'd stayed close to his family. His first hunt for the dragons had scared him because he hadn't expected it to happen right then and while it had been fun, his mother had yelled at him for going off alone with someone he'd just met to do something so dangerous. So, out of guilt, the boy stayed close by and hardly touched the battle axe he had bought with his money. Today though, today Whan was going to venture out because if he spent one more day bored with is mother, he was going to throw a fit. So he'd strapped the axe to his back and took off as soon as he could, his wings not out for once. He'd been following a little stream in the woods near the city and came to a cliff he knew about. He was going to dangle his feet over the edge and throw rocks down it, but upon arriving, he saw someone standing at the cliff's edge and his heart skipped a beat and then pounded hard. It looked like another boy. Swallowing was difficult when he was so scared his whole mouth was dry and refusing to make more spit. "Excuse me?" He asked carefully. Don't startle him. Whan was approaching slowly, putting the axe on the ground and holding out both hands. He had to be fast, the axe was weighing him down. "Hi. I'm... Are you okay?"

The last thing Linnith expected was company, so when she heard a voice she jerked backwards, hands losing their grip on the edge of the cliffs. Had she been standing and leaning over like she’d been, she’d likely been a gonner. Isn't’ that what she wanted, though? Frowning, she closed her eyes and forced her beating heart to calm down for a moment. A flicker of doubt about her earlier plans made itself known. Did she really want to die? Was that really the answer to everything? When she opened her eyes, she pinned the new person with her gaze. Her eyes narrowed at the smaller boy — he couldn’t be very old, definitely not even in his teens yet — and she huffed. “I...I’m fine.” She ran a shaky hand through her hair and made herself calm down enough that she could raise to her feet. “I was...I was just lost in thought...and enjoying the view.” She rubbed at her face, trying to smear away any lingering tears. She knew it was futile, though. Her red, puffy eyes would give away that she hadn’t just been sitting and enjoying anything. “What are you doing out here?” Linnith snapped harsher than she had meant to.

Whan was really getting worried about the boy. He frowned a little more and shuffled forward a bit more, holding a hand out to him. Whan really wanted to get him away from the edge. It was making him very nervous and anxious. He did see the other boy glare at him, but at the same time, he didn't care. "I ...was out to see if I could fight anything... Hey can... we talk over here? You...you really look like you could use someone to talk to. I can listen!" He might be ten, but he was a bit mature for his age. He licked his lips in a nervous tick before shuffling a little closer. "My name is Whan. I'll listen to you, okay?" He wiggled his fingers which looked small and a little short in an attempt to catch the other boy's attention.

Linnith stared at the boy’s hand, brows knitting together in confusion. She was a stranger to this kid. What did he care about her? She brought a hand up to her chest, trying to rub away the sudden ache that bloomed out from her heart. In that moment, she was reminded of her loss — her best friend, one of the few that had been completely supportive of her. Pursing her lips, she jerked her gaze away from the boy’s hand and clenched her eyes shut. “You wouldn’t understand.” Despite these words, Linnith found herself stepping back from the cliff’s edge. Her eyes didn’t return to the boy, though — the thought of looking someone in the eyes, at that moment, pained her. “You shouldn’t be out here,” Lin, said, desperately trying to sway the subject away from her current mental capacity. “It’s dangerous.”

"Exactly!" Whan called back, frowning hard. This kid didn't seem to be moving back at all. Whan stepped a little closer, wiggling his fingers again, a slightly panicked look upon his face. "It's dangerous and you shouldn't be out here alone either." At least Whan had his ax, what did this kid have? "...I might not understand, but I might! We could just talk. Let's... get away from this cliff, yeah? There's some logs a bit back we can sit on.. I'll stay away, but... I think it's ...too dangerous." He wasn't going to touch the other boy. Not all kids liked being touched, and Whan was clearly younger than this one. It wouldn't be polite, either way. "I have some snacks I can share with you! Do you like dried meats? I have a few large pieces I can't eat all by myself.."
