A place shrouded in mystery, no one knows what or why this megalithic structure is. Archeologists and anthropologists have been flocking here for quite sometime, sponsored by the IVPRF, to get to the bottom of it; but, unfortunately, with the Tower chock full of hazards the going has been slow in that area. Still, evidence of several periods of usage--a changing of hands, if you will--is abundant in the areas that have been explored.

Exit to Ikana Valley
PostPosted: Thu May 10, 2018 8:52 pm

There was a point at which the mayor became very nervous with no warning and a nearly imperceptible tell: about half way from the fork in Termina Field to Ikana Valley, where the grass began to grow red and stiff like a wine-o's old carpet, the mayor's knee twitched toward the window of the carriage; immediately thereafter, a hand went up to his chin and the man suddenly looked like he had been molded into the shape of an ear--a pathetic sound went with it too. He prayed for the carriage to turn around, for them to be half-way from the event.

But... This was not to be. The staff at the research facility had been buzzing about all day. The hive was tired-looking too; all the equipment had been getting more than its fair usage in the past week or so. See, with the coming of the new find--which had happened about a month ago; the calls, the calls! to get all the important people in Termina--mind you, Titus wouldn't mind being forgotten this time, seeming to forget, whether it was by peaceful resolution or not, that little clause of continued spotlight in or to--yes, well--with that came the excuse to ramp up other research efforts, the council seeming to have their eyes opened to the fields of discoveries instead of being deafened by the words 'science, superstition, folly...' And so it came easy but difficult to work work work in that field full of holes to hidden chambers of all sorts of beasts, and, perhaps more interestingly, the caches of old explorers. At the behest of the scientific community, the findings were to be presented on the way to revealing the relic in a sort of jamboree...

The mayoral couple was invited to tour the facility, but Titus remained stoically quiet as they were unloaded near the ruins. Something for another time? He looked like he could break into a cold sweat at any moment as he stood there. The sun was courting its dark lover behind the wrinkles of its bedding, and a silhouette held himself a pillar to hold the ground to what he saw.

And so, when the time was right, out of the carriage they went. He seemed to have been having more fun dealing with the bandits than being here, though of the two options, she much preferred that he was safely at her sidebfor even something mildly boring.

What was on his mind now? She wrapped her arm around his. A good time to distract him, perhaps? "What is it, dear?"

Perhaps something here helped him remember the days of his adventuring? Hopefully the fight from earlier didn't startle him too badly.

The mayor shook his head. "I don't like this." He couldn't manage the words to describe his feelings, but he could at least offer a smile in the meantime. A field researcher--or someone with a labcoat--spotted the two. They waved, even jumping a little to get their whole body into it.

"Heeey!!" she looked like she had just enough coffee to stay awake, which, when catalysed by the sight of her target, activated transcendently, producing the bubbly fairy of a lab-tech heading right for the mayoral couple. "You're here! Follow me." A sideways glance from the mayor. "Told you I didn't like this..."

A few die-hard nerds were gathered on either side of the street that led into town. They were mostly Deku, if the trivia means anything. They cooed and hushed as the couple passed. "We've been expecting you--all of us at the lab went through the trouble of putting our best finds on display, just to have your opinion." A few minutes of walking led them to a small tent with a few things under glass. They seemed to be different gadgets.

"We've been developing some new applications of the relic's energy. There seems to be limitless applications!" The sprightly labbie clasped her hands together and looked up hopefully at the mayor. "Do-Do you think you'll talk about it in your speech?"

"Sounds like something worth saying..." The mayor looked a little overwhelmed, and he looked like he was hiding this by looking underwhelmed.

The more she watched Dixon as he reacted to their surroundings, and in particular some of the findings, led her to wonder if there wasn't something more that was going on. He might have preferred to be actually fighting, yes, but whatever was on his mind seemed to be enough to upset and disturb his peace of mind.

Objectively, Kimi saw this area was open to more discoveries and that it would continue to progress an change. That would mean interest in the area would grow, which meant there would likely be more funding to the area, which was likely why the students of history and science were excited about discovering more.

Unfortunately, while that was one side of it, as she caught sight of some of the findings, in particular some of the relics, she found herself worrying about how such artifacts were designed to be used against how they might have been used. There seemed to be limitless applications? To what end?

For most of Hyrule and its allied nations, there was an unspoken and unwritten law that sacred sites and temples, while they could be tended, were to be left empty if they were abandoned. The hero alone traveled into these structures. And there was word that a hero was among them. That there were people interested in these sites now seemed unusual in its way. Would this bode ill for them later?

"What can you tell us about the relic?"

"Yes, well..." the labbie didn't seem to know how to say it, or maybe she was just searching for the courage to be firm. "We aren't at liberty to mention the specifics." Maybe Kimi knew that? Maybe that's why she put it in such a way to her? The mayor seemed to grow impatient; the labbie jumped. "I mean! The relic was found in a place far below the old ruins of the Stone Tower. We'd been digging for weeks... In any event, it exhibited a strange energy. We're still trying to figure out exactly what it can best be used for..."

"Why don't you tell her what it is?" Dixon jammed into the conversation like a dagger in the labbie's side. He had that familiar look of determined dissatisfaction in his eye again. There was a long and sweltering pause, then the girl finally spoke up.

"It's an artifact we believe belonged to the people who lived here long ago. We still need to know more about what it meant to them, and thanks to what we've been able to accomplish, we're getting there, sir..." Dixon was silent.

They were still learning about it, but whatever it was now existed above the surface, and if they were still uncertain about its purpose, it seemed more and more likely that this was also tied to the news of a hero in the land. She did not like the foreboding way this sounded.

She touched Dixon's arm, grateful that he prodded further, but she imagined there wasn't much else that the researcher and archeologist could share. Ignorance was bliss until someone asked you about what you didn't know.

"What have you discovered about the purpose of the building or when this place was last used?"

"Yes, well, as you know, we had quite a bit of historical records on the ruins--that is, until they were destroyed in the Garo Wars..." Long ago, it is known, the Garo returned in impressive numbers and invaded Termina by Ikana Valley. So much of what had been accomplished was torn down, and for the longest time none could enter the Stone Tower. Dixon seemed less than amused, as was the norm this conversation. "... But I suppose it does confirm the rumors that the Stone Tower was sacred to them, if nothing else, though..."

"That was all about two-hundred years ago," added Dixon.

"That's right." Then it seemed like the girl was struck with a bolt of inspiration. "Oh! You're ancestor was involved in that, wasn't he?" A slow, disinterested nod from the mayor as he kept his eyes fixed on the exhibit before him. "A-Anyway... It's assumed that the Garo had something to do with the relic, and that it was indicative of their peak as a society. One of the questions we're wrestling with now is whether or not the item was a rarity or was just a common piece to them..."

Unfortunately, without the Garo here to fill in the many blanks, there would not likely be much to supplement the evidence or confirm what the truth was amidst all of the theories. It seemed just as likely that none of them would ever know the full truth in their lifetime.

It was very interesting to hear that Dixon had ancestry here, however. At least, if the accounts so far were to be believed. There was already agreement in that piece with both. Perhaps she could persuade Dixon to tell his family's side later.

"Sounds like an interesting puzzle," Kimi acknowledged, finding it easy to find a polite smile. "May your future discoveries provide you more insight into it."

"You'll come by for the unveiling later, won't you?" That was the final question of the scientist as she bid the visiting pair farewell. At the behest of the handlers, the mayoral couple were dragged to a few photo ops in the area. They had a brief sit-down with the sitting grand-duke of the land. His mien was that of a lion, over stated but not at all diminished in terms of pride or nobility. After that a tour of the shoppes around.

"This is why I didn't want to come," said the mayor, hand in chin, head in a cloud. They were riding away from the newly re-invigorated downtown. Something about making the area more attractive for visitors; something else about the duty of the aristocracy to create something beautiful. Either way, the mayor could relate to a few things, but felt very bothered to have it seem like his responsibility at the moment.

Soon they were at the main event, and all races and kinds had come to see what had been unearthed there, a piece of the history of Termina! A podium was there and a stage to go with it, and the gold trim around the mic stand caught the sun so that the mayor looked like his head was being projected by some unearthly technology as well. After all had finally been stricken quiet enough by the heat, the speech began.

... Unfortunately for boredom, the speech would be interrupted by the sound of a line of bodies, the honored guests, hitting the ground with a flat thud. The crowd was silent, more so than a moment ago, at first, but then a loud clamour ripped through that grew like a wildfire. It fed on the panic it produced, and the shadows that it produced were its audience, were the commanders of the flame. They were beings of pure malice. They had no agenda but death. They were... Garo.

Dixon was using his podium as a shield, framed by flames and decorated with a wet rose on his side. He winced, and slashed at nothing, he cried out.

He might not have wanted to come, but he was appreciated there, and as she mentioned, it clearly meant a lot to the excavators and the people. She was at his side for the remainder of the journey, but did find herself separated from him when he was directed to the podium, where he would address the people that had flocked to join in the official unveiling. She wasn't far, this was true, but she wasn't at his side. Instead, she had been off to the side, with a few other honored guests, who were given seats somewhat beside the main stage. A seat was beside her, for Dixon, she imagined, but unfortunately, when it seemed the last part of their engagement here had finally begun, in the heat of the day the event was attacked.

Kimi was on her feet, and in the midst of the screams and shouts, it was Dixon's voice that startled her more intensely than she expected. The crowd screamed and scattered. The guards were already engaged, if delayed in moving to any kind of helpful defense.

First bandits, but now..? She began to frantically worry about him, more intensely than she had before. He had already been in one fight today, and that had wounded him. Would he be weaker now?

Kimi wanted to move to her husband's side, but felt a firm hand on her shoulder. "Mi'lady, this is-"

"Help him. Go!" She shoved off the hand and she watched the guard scramble for his sword, as he should have. She pushed him in the direction of the mayor. There was too much screaming... her voice wouldn't carry.

Of all the days not to have a proper sword... but then again... Would Dixon have wanted her to fight? (She knew how it felt for her to watch him get hurt, but damn him!) She moved herself behind the chairs that had been set up for their 'convenience', hoping the barrier would protect her in some way while she tried to gather a plan. Was this attack expected? When had their land become so dangerous?

He rode in, quite unusually so, as he borrowed a mechanical beast that he barely trusted. Sure, it was powerful, but it gleamed so brightly that he was certain to be seen as garish and he doubted such an entrance could ever be subtle if he wished to sneak in.

Nevertheless, speed was of higher priority than one's preferences. Besides, it wasn't every day he could ride in on a shining steed to the rescue of fair maiden and to the service of his lord. (Though he imagined there might have been objections to these descriptions.)

The mechanical horse... or chariot pulled engine, was piloted by a person half Max's size and who was growing more and more nervous about the speed at which they rode and to what they were driving toward.

"S-sir! We can't just-!"

"Get me there." He growled as he drew his weapon and braced himself on the side of the machine. The skirmish was underway, and he saw people scrambling, recently scattered. He hoped to be on the front end of the assault. When finally fed up with the distance, he leapt from the vehicle, trailed by men on horseback who charged into the battle with their revolving crossbows braced on their arms.

The arrows, safely over the heads of the civilians, fired at the robed assassins who appeared now and here, instead of earlier. They must have been trying to make a statement.

The metal car spun and its pilot struggled to get it back in reverse and to bail on the fight, but Max seemed to ignore it as he leapt onto the stage to challenge the Garo. The tall man and his blade was a flash of movement.

"Captain!"

"At your service!" He grunted through the motion of his strike. "I didn't realize you were putting on a play, Mayor."

Things weren't looking good. Dixon was a brawler, not at all trained to fight this shadowy horde of agile assassins. Plus, he had spent the better part of the last decade behind a desk-there was no way he was in any condition to be of much use here, try as he would. The Garo were bathing the area in fire and blood, and seemed unstoppable.

Luckily, the reinforcements brought a moment of reprieve to the hysterical group. Dixon was holding his side, shirt leaking red. "I should've known you'd come, fan of tragedy you are..." He coughed, wincing and leaning over to the side. The Garo, silently holding a perimeter around the newcomers, watched for a moment, seeming to have much to say but too much contempt to speak. A dense fog went up like a curtain, and the enemy was gone...

Dixon collapsed to a knee. "Damnit..."

And so ended the attack.... With far too many dead....

He searched the air and parted the smoke that was in the way. Just because this attack ended did not mean that they were any safer. There might be another wave. Unfortunately, Max didn't quite know what it was that inspired this attack.

His eyes narrowed and he took a rough count of the remaining numbers. He turned to his fellow guards and began to mobilize the number he brought with them to quickly gather the wounded and to get them back to medical care.

And in her confusion, with the chaos, and the arrival of the support network of guards, the assailants vanished from the field. She looked to see them on the perimeter, watching them. She waited for another attach. She waited for another volley, knives to come flying, and yet..... They vanished instead.

No sooner than she saw Dixon drop than she rushed to him. While Max took care of things and continued on, she moved to her husband's side. She wished she had answers. She would have demanded them if any of the assailants had been caught. It had happened too quickly for her to know how many had died and how many were simply wounded. Yet, the sound of those wounded were... few.

"Dixon...!" She pressed a hand against his chest and wrapped her arm around his back. She doubted she could carry him, but she was fairly confident she could support him. There were too many questions to ask about his speculations. "How bad is it?"

Injured... but not dead.

The mayor groaned and shook his head, lifting himself to his feet. The red patch at the bottom of his shirt seemed to grow as he pressed through. He still needed her, limping, leaning, lurching. He offered a weak smile, but didn't appear to have the strength to speak at the moment.

This was the price they'd paid with their gamble. In their effort to promote some diplomacy, the leaders of all nations were assembled on this dusty plateau--Deku king and Goron chief; Zora princess and human elected--and the Garo wasted no strike. All of them and those close, with names that invoked power in their own lands, were slain and slung about the floor as a string of garnets...

By the time they got to Max, some of the fallen had begun to stir, but the most important members of the gathering were most certainly dead. Dixon seemed to already be bearing the weight of it. He dropped to his knees, despite his wife's efforts, and wept bitterly against the dirt as if his friend was not there...

"I knew this was a bad idea--I told them! ..."
