The last stretch of road towards Tale was rough. There were some moments when he wasn’t even sure the wagon would make it -- it bounced side to side and back and forth as the wheels strained over the difficult terrain. Tamim and Aakil strained at their yokes and let out low huffing sounds of displeasure. This was likely as uncomfortable for them as it was for Juno, having all this load jostling around behind them.
But there was nothing for it. This was definitely the best road; everyone he had talked to told him that. To turn around now would be to doom himself to more of this, and then the prospect of being stuck in Neued when he had three deliveries to make in Tale. He’d have to make his way back through this way eventually, but for the time being he spoke words of encouragement to the two quhar, switching on his reins in an attempt to guide them down the least turbulent path.
Eventually, the ground began to even out. The trees became sparse, and the damp Jauhar ground was replaced with that peculiar Tale sand. He pulled into the first village he saw.
As he was attending to the quhar, a local man walked up and asked him if he had any ale for sale. Juno thought about it -- most of the barrels were already promised to major inns, but didn’t he have an extra few? He was supposed to give them out as ‘freebies’ if there was any disagreement with the inn-keepers, as currency to help smooth things over. But Juno was a resourceful sort, and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make some coin.
“Yeah, mister, you hold on a sec!”
He hopped into the wagon and picked up one of the extra barrels… only to find that it was empty. The turbulent drive over had smashed the corner open. Now he noticed the beer-scented puddle on the wagon floor. He let out a ragged sigh and rubbed his temples.
