It was the two of them, well, Kaelyn looked down at Wessex and rolled her eyes – Three of them. The three of them were sent to scout the surrounding area while the main Viking team rest. Each day was like a gift sent to her from the Gods above, although she still wasn’t exactly sure why Dooley was with her. Peering over at the large ex-firekin Kaelyn found herself shaking her head. Everything would have been fine without him, she would have been safe – The captain was reserved and kept a tight ship, something she really appreciated. Was he really so worried that he had to make a fuss?

Looking over at Dooley again her amber eyes rolled – Of course he would make a fuss, as Wessex had said, Dooley had feelings for her. He… loved her. Frowning, Kaelyn was now looking down at Wessex, her feet marching forward without hesitation. Would the nasty feeling she felt for Wessex ever go away?

It has now been three month since the two had reunited; Kaelyn had come to accept Dooley as a fixed character in her life. No matter how angry she got, how hard she hit or how many times she attempted to leave him, Dooley always found her. He never once spoke with aggression, nor had he ever taken a paw to her. He simply smiled and remained firm in his decision to be with her and protect her, calming each angry episode almost effortlessly.

If Kaelyn was honest, she was also starting to expect and even enjoy his presence. She found herself sneaking off just to have him find her. She’d wait for him, allow herself to get mad at him for finding her and then let him soothe her feelings. In some ways, Kaelyn was starting to accept that perhaps she truly had feelings for Dooley.

Sneaking a glance at the big, goofy lion Kaelyn cracked a soft smile. She was glad he was with him, even if Wessex was there.

Shoving her shoulder against his, Kaelyn took off in front of Dooley towards a lone tree. Her senses seemed to be heightened as was her heartbeat. She could hear her heart beat inside her chest, every grain of sand, dirt and rock – Not to mention the smells. Oh the smells she could pick out, dead grass, dusty ground, warm air, Dooley, Wessex…. Hyena.

Stopping dead in her tracks, Kaelyn’s eyes widened – Her only encounter with a hyena proved to be a rather vicious one. If all were like the one called Khimodu, then she was to be cautious. Looking back at Dooley, Kaelyn nodded for him to come closer, her paw on her mouth.

Pricking her ears, the chocolate brown lioness peeked through the tall grass, attempting to find the source of the smell.

“Dooley… is that?”

Her voice was soft, she wasn't trying to drag attention to herself while still attempting to get Dooley’s attention. What she saw through that grass made her stomach knot. Not only was there a hyena present… but a little lion cub.

He was a member of the stormborn and had been for such a short while that he was still becoming accustomed to the customs of the place. Although the big lion had decided that what ever Kaelyn did he would do to, he enjoyed his time at home. There were many youngsters in the stormborn and just as many of them were keen to learn to fight. He often found a young lion waitin at his door for him to rise and teach them the ways of the firekin. They were fierce fighters and he enjoyed nurturing them, teaching them to look after themselves.

Of course when Kaelyn had decided to become a reaver, as he knew she would, he had ultimately decided that would be a good path for him too. Something deep in his stomach told him not to leave her alone. Perhaps it was the fear that she would disappear again?

He knew she had started to sneak off on purpose. It actually made him happy to see her purposefully waiting for him when he came to look for her. She thought he hadn't noticed, he was fairly certain of that but the look on her face when ever he caught up to her said everything to him, she liked his presence, even if the price of that look was a swift chastising.

Her shoulder nudge and short race made him laugh, she could beat him in a race any day of the week, she was smaller and swifter than him, he could certainly hold his own but she simply out streaked him when it came to foot racing.

His smile vanished instantly when he saw the hyaena. He knew them to be vicious beasts, though he had met a few on his travels that were friendly, the situation before them didnt look friendly at all. Dooley lowered his ears in to his mane. "Kae you go left, Wessex go right, I'll go up the middle, lets box him in."

The stormborn was a strange place for her, she was considered a Thrall in the pride, a Thrall was basically a slave and though Dooley would never treat her differently she was treated with indifference in the pride, more often than not she was ignored. That didn't mean that she ever left Dooleys side, unless she had to, if she was alone she stayed in his den, she really didn't want to get in to any sort of argument with a resident lion.

She had of course been dragged out on this mission to become a reaver. She wasn't upset about that really, it was sort of nice being back out in the rogue lands, though she had to stay close to Dooley still she enjoyed the change of scenery. Her gaze though often fell on kaelyn, the deep chocolate lioness still looked at her with disdain. Honestly how many times did she have to apologise? Kaelyn was stubborn and held on to a grudge like no one she had ever met, well, okay she had met other firekin like her, but damn was she glad there was a mountain of Dooley between her and Kaelyn most of the time.

It actually made her smile to see Kaelyn happy, it made her happy that the lioness could enjoy herself, she could laugh and she knew that this entirelycame down to Dooley. Kaelyn had a missiona nd Dooley had upset that but he had also brought her some sort of happiness. Even she could see kaelyns change in attitude and this was proven on many occasions, this was just the latest in a series of games that saw Dooley chase after the lioness. Wessex trotted behind them at a leisurely pace she was in no hurry to interrupt them and out here she was safe as long as she stayed within a decent distance. Of course she didn't expect the sudden stop. She growled and lowered her ears taking instruction from Dooley was easy enough, of course she would be the easiest path for a getaway for the hyena but that didn't matter she would stand her ground, something was seriously wrong here.

Waphupha had started her day much like any other. Today though she had woken too early. Her siblings and mother slumbered in the dim twilight of pre-dawn. The stars twinkling above her were so beautiful and one star, seemed to move. She had chased this star, it was so close to her paws that she nearly caught it, once, twice, three times. On the fourth she had finally captured the moving star. She had spoken to the little lightning bug happily, named it star and told it all of her secrets, not that she had any. It wasn't until the hyena came up behind her that she even realised she wasn't at home any more. The hyena had spoken to her in a gentle manner, had asked her who she was and where she came from. Who was easy enough, where was a little bit more confusing. Honestly, she didn't know. She lived with her mother and a lot of other lions and she had a father who wasn't really interested. It was in a general direction, she just wasn't sure exactly which general direction. The sun had started to rise at this point and as she looked around for any familiar land mark she had been snatched up and carried away.

This was the situation she was now in. She was very lost and the hyena was no longer friendly, she was afraid and she had no idea where home was, she had no idea what was going to happen to her. tears rolled down her cheeks her blue eyes watery with grief. What was going to happen to her?

Kaelyn was on the move as soon as Dooley started to address Wessex; her heart was racing as she took in the sight in front of her. A nasty looking hyena carrying a helpless cub, its tears falling steadily down its face. Where was the mother and father in this situation? Didn’t they know their child was missing?!

Amber eyes scanned and rescanned the area, hoping, perhaps even praying that the child’s mother or father would burst through the grass and seize the hyena by the neck. That time wouldn’t come though, was with each passing second, the hyena looked more and more eager to kill its prize.

s**t Dooley, we need to move.

Kaelyn stood, so tense she could feel her muscles spasm. She’d have to go at the hyena as hard as she could, while also taking into account both the cub and the jackal. As much as Wessex aggravated the lioness, Kaelyn knew if anything were to happen to the little white jackal, Dooley would be utterly heartbroken.

Speed was of the essence and it felt like everything was taking far too long.

Come on…. Hurry up, Dooley!!!

Dooley stalked forwards, his massive hulking frame became aggressive as he moved, the usual soft, giant ball of fluff melted away in to a solid wall of muscle. "Release, the, cub." He growled his voice low, aggressive, any joy and laughter had melted from his voice. His tail whipped around behind him he edged forwards, slowly, carefully, he had to get the hyena way from the cub.

The little cub landed on the ground in a pile of damp fluff. The shock of the big lions around the hyena had clearly shocked it enough to drop the little cub. She was cold, the ground was hard and when she landed she felt like her world had stopped. All she could do was lay still and hope what ever was happening wasn't as scary as the hyenas jaws.

Wessex moved. She moved as quickly as she could, her tail whipped between her legs as she scooped up the cub, she bolted for Kaelyn. Luckily this cub was little, she was a really tiny cub and the pale jackal found it easy to pick her up by the scruff. For the first time in months, Wessex made a beeline for kaelyn vanishing between her fore legs. For the first time in months she wasn't afraid of Kaelyn, for the first time in a long time they had the same goal, save the cub.

As soon as Wessex was behind her, Kaelyn lurched forward. While Dooley was great with intimidation and a decent fighter, she was merciless and would bat no eyes at putting an end to another’s life. Everything in her very being told her to end the miserable life that existed before her. Even when she was living on her own as a rogue she wouldn’t think of killing a child – There was ill, old and weaker to eat – never young. This creature was merely an opportunistic b*****d who was about to meet justice.

Letting out a guttural roar, the dark chocolate colored lioness crashed into the hyena, claws quickly piercing the skin. It let out a high pitched yelp and immediately returned the pain with a strong bite on Kaelyn’s shoulder.

Snarling, the Viking tore away from her captor and slammed her paw against the hyena’s face. Reacting again before the hyena could, Kaelyn dove her teeth into the neck of the heinous creatures. A quick yelp was emitted as the creature struggled, but Kaelyn already knew it was dead. Smirking, amber eyes glanced at Dooley before she forcefully pulled her face, with jaws still clamped tight, away from the hyena.

Like confetti thrown in celebration, the hyena’s throat spurted blood, the artery found in its neck severed. It quivered and attempted to move, to speak, but nothing more than a gurgle could be heard. Glaring down, Kaelyn waited until the beast took its last breath.

“The deed is done.” She heaved, throwing some dirt on the corpse before her.

Dooley watched quietly. Possibly for the first time in his existence he saw a creature being killed because it deserved it. Not because it was food, not because it had been hunted, because it had stolen and caused pain to a tiny child. He kept his eyes on the scene before him and waited, he watched as kaelyn took the things life. Once the final breath was taken, he rose and moved to Kaelyn. He licked her shoulder sand shook his head. "You really need to start watching this side." He huffs, he refused to look down at the hyena. It was dead, the vultures could have it.

As much as the giant male wanted to stand there and clean her wound properly there was a more pressing matter. "Wessex, is the cub alright?" He turned his gaze towards his jackal companion before striking out towards them. He dropped to his belly and smiled a careful smile. "You're safe now, we wont hurt you." He rumbles, his voice returning to it's usual gentle friendly timbre.

Wessex lifted her head as Dooley spoke, she had barely noticed the ruckus she was so busy with the little cub. She was wet and cold and there were a few scratches to her pale cream coat. The scratches were minimal but she knew that the poor little thing would ache with bruises from the rough and tumble ride she had been on. The pale jackal gently licked at the scrapes her voice a gentle whisper. "It's okay little one, we're here to help, he won't ever touch you again."

The tiny cub rose her tear streaked face to look at Wessex, she had never seen a jackal before, she had no idea what the creature was but it spoke with such a gentle tone that her tears stopped for a moment. "Where's mama?" She queried her baby blue eyes widening. She turned her head when's he heard the gentle rumble from Dooley, her eyes widened further, such a massive lion, she thought her dad was big but this guy, and the lady, the lady she could see, she was big too. "You're not daddy.." She paused for a second tears welling in her pale eyes. "You're not Mama. Where's mama?" She sniffles massive wet tears rolling down her face though she made no move to shift from between the jackals front paws she looked between the threee unfamiliar faces hopefully.

Kaelyn stood back, away from Wessex, Dooley and the cub. Honestly, she had absolutely no idea how to approach a cub, nor was she well-armed in dealing with tears. It was definitely interesting that a child could break down all the walls Kaelyn so carefully placed and completely destroy her sensibility. Heaving a sigh, Kaelyn pressed her ears to her skull to muffle out the soft cries for a mother and started moving the corpse away from the area.

---------

Stopping finally after moving the corpse out of earshot of the child, Kaelyn got up on her hind legs and looked about. There was absolutely no one other than themselves, their Viking troupe and the dead hyena -- even a path offering where the hyena had come from was missing.

This child wasn’t going to find mother any time soon. Heaving a sigh, Kaelyn dropped back down onto her rump, offered one last glare to the hyena corpse and returned to the party.

“Only signs of life are the troupe, ourselves and the departed hyena, there isn’t even a trail to follow.”
Glancing at the tiny cub, Kaelyn quickly looked at Dooley, brow twitching with nervousness.

“Shall I alert the troupe?”

She waited with baited breath, anything to get her out of the situation, anything. Perhaps the captain would know of a pride in the area or have even ran into the parents of the missing child. It was the next step in her mind, find the child’s parents, but where would they even look? …Who would take care of her?

“Dooley?”

Dooley lifted his head as Kaelyn returned. He smiled at the big lioness and chuckled. She looked like she was terrified to him. It made him grin inside, he had never seen her so awkward, she was so darn cute. Edging forwards he scooped the little cub in to his paws and groomed her gently "We don't know where your mother is little one. Kaelyn and I will find her for you, but until then you'll have to come and stay with us." He looked up at Kaelyn and smiled, he supposed he should have asked her if she wanted to take on the child but to him it was the only obvious course of action.

Wessex wiggled forwards and whined quietly, she was getting very attached to the little cub and when Dooley took her away it felt like she lost something. She had always been a motherly creature. "Don't cry little love, what's your name hmm?

The little cub sniffles and looks around, she didn't know what was wrong with the lioness but the big lion scooped her up so gently she felt safe and the tears that had been constantly rolling from her eyes slowly came to a stop. "Promis you finds mama?" She looks up at Kaelyn blinking owlishly. She hiccups and licks her lips "My name is Waphupha, mama calls me Phu. Will you find mama?"

Dooley looked up at Kaelyn and beamed his own eyes resting happily on the chocolate female. "Kaelyn will find them she's very clever, for now you'll stay with us okay? I'm Dooley and the little jackal is Wessex and the beautiful chocolate lady is Kaelyn."

Her skin was crawling, heart racing – This was absolutely not going according to plan. Most viking trips ended with reavers bringing back goods, thralls and other items, not a child! Watching the tiny cub wiggle around on Dooley’s paws made her panic even more. Was this child even properly weaned? What could she eat right now? What if she became attached to Dooley and Wessex? What if they never found her parents, would they be raising her until adulthood? Would raising her make them cubnappers?!

Kaelyn’s mouth was hanging open as her mind raced, she wasn’t in the right state of mind to truly respond to Dooley. Mother wasn’t exactly a word she’d pin on herself, especially in her current state. “Dooley…” Her mouth was dry as she gasped for more air. Closing her eyes, Kaelyn took a couple deep breaths and let herself think.

“Okay, okay… this is a mess but if we regroup we can possibly fix this.” Kaelyn wanted to leave, get back to the captain and hopefully fix the mess entirely before they got back. There was absolutely no room in their den for another body... and who would raise the child anyway?

She already knew the answer to that question but ignored it completely. This was all a nightmare.

Opening her eyes, amber met beaming blue, causing her to shiver. It seemed Dooley had a plot in his head and it was one she wasn’t exactly excited for either. Turning away from the group Kaelyn moved in the direction of the Viking troupe. “We will see what we can do. Let’s get back to the troupe and form a search party.”

With those instructions out in the air, the chocolate lioness vanished into the grasses towards the captain, her hopes high on them finding that child’s parents.

Dooley chuckled quietly. His body moved as he laughed, he tried to suppress his laughter. He could see Kaelyns panicked look. She was worried, worried about looking after a cub. Her desperation to be away from the whole situation showed on her face. He was going to speak to her but she was so tightly wound he couldn't. Instead he groomed the child for a moment before he lifted her up and placed her on his head, his massive fluffy mane accepted the tiny cub easily. He got to his paws and followed after Kaelyn. "Come on Wessex, lets see if we can find this little ones parents."

He chuckles again "You sleep Phu." he whispers looking down at his jackal companion before glancing after Kaelyn. "Wes, you don't smell other lions do you?" He frowns.

Wessex looks up at the big lion. She too was rather amused by Kaelyn's panick, but it was short lived when Dooley asked if she could smell other lions? Her nose was great, she could smell for miles, there was nothing but the familiar band. She shook her head a sad look in her doleful brown eyes. "No Dooley, just, just the band."

Dooley gave a short nod. "Lets go." He gave a heavy sigh and followed after Kaelyn, this search would be fruitless, who knew how far the hyena had travelled, the cub was so young he doubted she could give them any real clue about her parents.

The tiny cub felt so safe nestled in Dooleys mane she could hardly keep her eyes open. Her blue eyed gaze followed Kaelyn, Dooley, he had promised they would find her parents. She could feel her eyes drooping as she nestled down between the lions ears. She heard nothing of the exchange between the massive lion and the jackal. She was exhausted, she fell asleep before Dooley started moving. Maybe when she woke up she would be back home with her mama.
