Idle energy was going to be the end of him, he was certain.
It was another night of him slipping out of the house while Fiona's back was turned, hoping that she wouldn't notice his absence and that she wouldn't flood his phone with concerned texts. He had gone out earlier, hoping to use the excuse that he'd met up with a friend (the singular one he seemed to have right now) if she did call in and check on him. Tristan never stopped appreciating the woman that was Fiona Watson, but sometimes, he wanted to be able to exist without knowing that someone was fretting over him.
Things will get better, he told himself as he hunkered down into his coat against the bitter night air.
It was early enough that he didn't feel the overwhelming urge and instinct to let magic wash over him, but he still moved quickly, hands shoved into the pockets of his jacket while he wished that he had his camera so that he could at least be doing something that wasn't walking. I
This readjusting thing, sucked, hard.

Giulia was leaving school late, and the six year old, frankly, had no business being out here alone. But Jada was out of town, and Amélie was picking up Aidan, and she wasn't supposed to have been out for another 30 minutes. And then she had seen she shadow of a kitty, and there had just been so many sad, stray, unhappy kittens! Mr. Romankai had helped the one kitten get home, and her Seal Prince had distracted her from helping another, and then there were the star-head kitties and... Just so many kitties. And ahead of her, as she passed under a street light, she could see another, glowering and glaring, back arched, and tongue dripping from its mouth. It stared at her, with eyes glowing red, and even Giulia could recognize this time, that there was something terribly wrong about this kitty. Black foam dripped from jaws, long, narrow tongue almost dragging on the ground. Giulia was not the sort to scare easily, but as its head jerked up, and off in a different direction, Giulia bolted. Her shoes slapped against the asphalt, her little heart thumping as she raced towards her home, possibly frightened for the first time in her life. Princes and Knights would protect princesses- but sometimes the princesses had to protect themselves too! In her hurry, she barely looked where she was going, and when she crashed into too-long legs, she stared up, and up- and grabbed the man, quivering. "There is a bad kitty!" she told him, full of eloquence.

Tristan had been hoping for a mundane night, but his hopes were dashed the moment he saw the shadow of something sinister and the pitter patter of tiny feet and shoes slapping across the pavement in what he could only picture as desperation. He didn't even get to react, because there was a tiny body slamming into his legs, latching onto him.
There is a bad kitty!
One hand pressed against Guila's back, keeping her firmly with him while his eyes snapped up to catch sight of the youma that was stalking towards them.
Teeth gritted he used one of his large hands to cover his eyes. "Restez calme et tranquille," he told her thoughtlessly, forgetting to consider that this was a child who spoke to him in english but - "
A quick glance around to make sure there were no observers, Tristan let magic shimmer over him with enough focus and he crouched before her. "Ne bouge pas, je vais m'en occuper. Restez en sécurité, comprenez-vous?"
The youma was approaching quickly and he put himself before the child immediately.

The person she had bumped into pressed a large hand to her head, and Giulia clung to the limb, shivering and shaking. She didn't know where the bad kitty was; she hadn't been looking behind her, but she imagined she could almost feel its hot breath on her neck, its oversized tongue preparing to gobble her up. The man told her to stay calm- and it was a man, even though she could not see, by the size of the hand and the soothing voice. And as he spoke in comforting French, Giulia's tears sprang anew. " Oui monsieur." she sucked in a breath, little mouth wobbling, and gazed up at him. And then he turned magical. Her eyes flew wide, rose-pink lips dropping wide in a silent 'O' and her rainbow-nailed fingers clasped together. A magical knight had found princess Giulia! She was saved! Again! He promised her he would take care of it, and Giulia shifted, nodding. "Je comprends. Je vais rester en sécurité. C'est un très mauvais chat, monsieur. Il a l'air malade. Les yeux sont rouges, et il a une bouche moussante, comme si le développement de la rage." It could be rabies. Or worse. "Ne laissez pas le chat vous mordre!" It would be terrible if the magical knight got sick!

Midgard could only hope that the young french speaking girl hadn't seen his face before he transformed. It had been risky in itself to power up wild and uncareless as he had but -
She was so scared.
"Don't worry, I'll protect you." Midgard promised, shield tonfas already materializing into his hands. The youma had lunged at him just as he had summoned both, the shield's coming up just in time and slotting together instinctively.
The squire had never used his magic before, never understood how to activate it but -
Bright pink burst out, forming a mini shield that protected the both of them from the snapping jaws of the youma. It let out a hideous screech, slamming into the ground before he broke the shield and threw himself at the beast, bottom part of his jagged shield thrown right at it's head.infinities i don't want to do a bunch of translations so Imma just italicize the french that's in english <3

The man who was a magical warrior promised her protection, and how could any princess refuse such an offer, when in trouble? She made a soft noise of fear and despair as the monster lunged, the child looking around desperately for something- anything- she could do to help. This was the first time she had been properly scared. Kai-Tar-toast had the bull, and an angry face, but this man looked squishy and kind, and she knew now that when bad kitties came, she had to be ready to help and fight. Like Mulan! Magic sprang out from Mr. Knight's shields, bright pink and beautifully magical; Giulia steeled herself, bright blue eyes peering around for a thing. There! A stick! Giulia grabbed it, holding it tightly in one chubby fist, watching Mr. Knight fling himself into the bad kitty and holding herself at the ready, looking for an opening in which she could run up and bap the bad kitty on the head. " Get him! You can do it! Let me know when I can hit him with my stick!" her high, small voice was shaking with fear, but she wouldn't make him protect her all by himself! Nuxaz Oh thank goodness, I didn't want to be the first one to cave.

It was strange, being on this side of things when a youma attacked. Last time he was in a situation where someone needed rescuing, he had the authority to command them to turn and leave - find a meal elsewhere. This time, there was no easy out and Midgard would have to fight instead of just defend.
His fingers shifted along the handles of the tonfa, youma squealing and thrashing beneath the point of his shield.
Even now, his weapon wasn't made to be used to attack. He'd never been one for aggression but there was a little girl behind him, cheering for him and preparing to try and aid him.
"Don't." The french command was firm, because there was no way in hell he would allow her to get any closer. "Stay back, I have this." Because he did.
The youma slipped free of his shield, reared up on it's legs and lashed out at him. He trapped it's head between the two halves of his shield and it blew up, dust exploding into the air.

Giulia paused at her knight's terse command, gripping hard her little mockery of a weapon, tiny body shaking. Should she run away? What if she came across another bad kitty? What if she didn't run and the man fell and the bad kitty came after her? What if the bad kitty tried to eat him! This was terrible! But for all the stress and strain as he assured her he had it, there didn't seem to be any fear that she could tell. But Giulia knew she wasn't always the cleverest little girl when it came to people being concerned or worried. Still, she stayed back, deciding to do like a good princess, and trust the magical knight who was going to rescue her. And then the bad kitty poofed, turning into evil magic dust. He had killed- no, knight's didn't kill, they vanquished- the bad kitty! Princess Giulia was safe! It vanished, and Giulia tackled her knight from behind with a little wail. "It was a scary kitty, Mr. Magic Knight, and I was very worried! I thought I would have to run all the way home!"

Now that the youma had been dusted, Midgard allowed himself to be concerned about the fact that this little girl was out on her own, relatively late at night. Or at least, too late for a child as far as he was concerned. Dusting his hands off, the tonfas were desummoned and he turned to his young charge that had remained close behind him.
A tall man, Midgard crouched so that he was closer to her level. Even then, he still managed to be a head or two taller than her.
"It's fine, you're safe now. Promise," He did his best to assure her, carefully reaching out a gloved hand to smooth out the girl's hair. "What's your name? We should get you home." They could start there and he would see to it that the young girl was escorted home, lest any more bad kitties came out and attacked such an innocent soul.

Her Knight turned, crouching in front of him, and Giulia shifted to straighten her spine, trying to look very good and brave like a proper rescued Princess. As she straightened her spine, the lights on her winged pink backpack and her pink sneaker-shoes flickered, bouncing over his face and the cement around them, tiny rainbows of light on his uniform. "Thank you for saving me," she told him politely, "I would have been in a lot of trouble if the kitty had eaten me." She was going to be in enough trouble for leaving her after-school lesson early without waiting for Amélie or the driver, or even seeing if a friend wanted to walk with her. If anyone found out they were going to make her take safety first lessons, and Jada would give her the disapproving look at threaten her with a body-guard again, even though she and Aidan had gotten to have some freedom after they left Europe. His hand on her hair was very comforting, and she looked up at him with wet, slightly starry eyes for a moment before blue eyes widened, and she gave a dramatic gasp. "Oh! Did you get hurt? You weren't injured protecting me from the kitty, were you?" Rainbow nails tipped the small, chubby fingers that patted over his face and uniform with anxiety, blond curls bouncing from side to side along with the rest of her, tiny teeth biting into fat little baby-lips. He had asked her a question, however, and after she was satisfied he wasn't going to die (not that she would be able to do anything if he was) she cleared her throat. "I'm Giulia. I live over there."She was very informative. So helpful.

Midgard tried to chuckle, an attempt to humor the little girl so that he could keep her close and deliver her home safely. Whomever was in charge of keeping an eye on Guilia would have likely gotten a disappointed look thrown their way. Destiny City was no place for wandering children.
It was difficult to suppress the scolding that bubbled in his throat. He ached to tell her that trouble was the least of her concerns if the 'bad kitty' had gotten her, but scare tactics usually did very little when it came to curious children. So instead, he said, "The kitty is taken care of, let's not worry about it." The sooner they steered away from the youma, the better.
"I'm fine," he attempted to insist, while allowing her to pat him down to see if he was injured. The youma hadn't been too difficult and he'd certainly been through worse before.
Standing, he offered her his hand. "Okay, Guilia, let's take you home."

Oh! Her knight gave a laugh, small but present, and the little girl beamed up at him with a star-struck expression. How could she not? This was a handsome knight, defender of scared little princesses. And she had made him try to laugh, so clearly she had done something very good. Which considering all she had done was be silly and not wait for an adult to collect her.... Maybe he was laughing so he did not cry? Jada did that. And Amelie. It seemed to be an adult thing. She would have to ask Elzo or Marlo or her teachers if they did that. They were adults too... Once she was satisfied that he was not going to die, Giulia pulled away, smacking her lips at him in a childish air kiss. "You were a very brave knight, Mr. Knight. I am very grateful." taking the hand he offered, she nodded. "I am ready to go home. I didn't wait for an adult or a friend like I was supposed to and it was very scary. Next time I will be more careful."Giulia led the knight in the direction of the city house carefully, tilting her head up almost constantly to stare at the big, tall knight who had protected her. "Are you a sen-shi? Or are you a magic person like Kairtairtaroast? He has a bull named Asterion who is on fire and I could not hug it. That made me sad. What is your name? Do you have a bull? Is it on fire?"

Something about childish innocence was endearing, even if it was also exasperating. "Well," Midgard began carefully, stooping to lift the little girl up and set her on his shoulders. This way, she got to feel tall and hopefully that would entertain her enough while simultaneously allowing him to keep her somewhere that she couldn't run from. "Next time you should wait like you're supposed to. Can't protect a princess that's always running away."
It had been a while since he'd interacted with children, but he was doing his best to cater to her strange perception of things.
She could point him in the directions, like a noble stead. "I am a...knight. My name, it's a secret princess." It wasn't that he didn't trust the little girl, but the less people who knew his name the better. "I don't have a bull, but I can be your stead, instead. Okay?" He offered as he walked towards the place she was directing him to.

She lifted her arms as the knight bent to scoop her up, assisting him in lifting her as best she could. Her fairy-winged backpack shimmered, lights splattering through the wings, even her little shoes catching alight as she bounced on her feet. Oh! Oh, he was so tall. "You're much taller than Jada and Amelie, and even taller than Elzo, and he is the tallest person I know aside from Jada's daddy, Mr. C. I think you might even be taller than Asterion! I am very tall from up here! I like it!" Giulia wriggled a bit, attempting to get herself into a comfortable place, and kicked her legs out with a giggle. "I don't always run away, I just don't always stay where I am told. There is a- diffurrants, Mr. Knight." It was a very important cementrics or salmontricks or whatever. It was when she tried to toe the line too close between word meanings. "So what should I call you, if I can't have your name? Can I call you... Hmmm. What is a good name for a knight? Arthur? Galahad? Lancelot? You don't look like a Bors or a Kay. You're a boy, so I can't call you Alanna or Jeanne, and- are you a prince?" She pointed him with her hand as he moved, guiding her knight in the right direction to take her home. "I could call you Mr. Knight but I am meeting a lot of those lately, so it would get confusing very fast. I need a secret code name, like you are a spy, or.... a magical knight."In moments, they weren't far from her home. She could see the familiar posts for the end of their driveway in the distance, and the pretty flowers that she and Jada had picked out for the city house. Only minutes now, and he could drop her and go about his business.

Midgard tried not to laugh and sigh at the same time. For how startling the events had been, he hadn't expected his companion to be so energetic still. But, adrenaline did funny things to people, he mused.
"Little princess," he said quiet but firmly, "Do not give away all your secrets so easily." He didn't think she was truly, but he was concerned about the amount of information she was slinging his way now, because what if he was someone out to hurt or use her? His heart constricted, worry and fear for the little girl wrapping around the organ. Fingers pressed a little more firmly into her thighs, to remind him that she was on his shoulders and for now, she was safe.
"But, I am very tall, yes." People seemed to enjoy pointing it out over and over again. Sometimes, he had to duck to get through doorways, but that didn't happen too often.
"I am no prince, I'm sorry." The idea that she could even think such a thing made shame well inside of him. Innocence like his young passenger needed to be protected. "You could call me..." Midgard hesitated, uncertain of what to have her call him. "Manheimr." It was but wasn't his name, sort of.
