As far as days went, this one had been okay. Or, rather, it had started okay, but for some reason, things kept happening that made every single one of his jobs a s**t show.

Today was a day of errand running, a rare occasion where the shop was closed to all business and K couldn't get the shop owner to let him in and work on his projects no matter how he tried to sell it. As working on cars and tinkering were his two favorite activities, that had put him into a sour mood after he had run an errand for Isaiah, whom he was still surprised that they were communicating after the fight.

Then, as he was dropping off a hasty supply delivery to a coffee shop, some dark haired and meek boy had run into him and spilled hot coffee all over both of them. It took him an extra ten minutes to get to his next job, which the person had complained about and paid him less because, shockingly, they had been someone who didn't wilt under his icy, resting face.

Later, that same boy who spilt coffee all over him had bumped into him on the streets and knocked the package he'd picked up for an elderly woman who couldn't travel out of his hand and halfway down the street. The boy was gone by the time he recovered his package so there wasn't a chance to say anything and now...

Now, he was on his way into a coffee shop to snag himself a beverage when he say the same boy again, staring at him from down the street. Without thinking, Kavinsky diverted from his intended goal and made a beeline straight for him.

The Russian probably looked like he was going to shove the boy against the wall and shake him down as he advanced.

"You," he snarled when he was close enough.

This was one of the worst days Yuuri could remember in a long time. Everything seemed to be going wrong. First his alarm hadn’t gone off and he barely made it to his first class in time. Then he was trying to get to his second class and somehow ended up running into a tall, well built man and spilled coffee over the both of them because he’d been distracted and startled from someone laying on their car horn almost right next to them.

He felt guilty that he only stayed long enough to try and get enough napkins to help clean everything up, before running off, his face beat red and his heart ready to burst from his chest.

Then, he’d somehow forgotten his flash drive with his newest edits for his film class and had to flub his way through a critique with old material. And then on his way to his psychology class to take a test, he’d run into the same tall, good looking guy and managed to knock his package out of his hands because naturally Yuuri was a complete idiot and had no idea what he was doing, and even as he tried to go after the man to help get the package back, the crowd of people in the streets pushed him back until he lost sight of the man. And he still had his test to take so he had to leave, another thing he felt guilty about. And he probably didn’t do that well on his test because he was much too distracted thinking about the horrible things he’d done.

So when he was miserably shuffling his feet back towards his dorms that afternoon, the sight of the same white haired man made the color completely drain from his face, Yuuri’s eyes wide.

To make matters worse, it looked like the man was planning on kicking his butt with the way he was striding towards him, and Yuuri made a delayed attempt to escape, which only managed to get him cornered in a faux alcove of where two buildings met; he’d been hoping it was an alley so he could try to slip away in the shadows but he’d been deceived.

“I’m s-so sorry, it was an accident, I didn’t mean it,” he practically whimpered, his arms lifting to protect his face and his head as he curled up on himself, back mostly to the brick wall behind him.

Sharp gray eyes were narrowed, chapped lips pressed firmly together with a tightly set jaw. Everything about Pietro Vladimir Ilya Ivan Kavinsky screamed dangerous and tense; from the way he held his shoulders to the tight curl of his fists. He was, undeniably, a man that people would glance at and know that he was a problem child or that they would go out of their way to avoid.

If he were ever honest with himself the way he was with other people, he would admit that he projected this angry tiger trapped in a cage to keep people away.

Something about watching Yuuri cower, drawing his arms over his face because he was afraid instead of intimidated, had Kavinsky drawing back instead of stomping forward as his instincts demanded. Still, even with a few feet of distance between them, Kavinsky seemed to fill the empty space of the alcove and tower over the boy probably only a handful of inches shorter than himself.

But K was used to making himself look bigger than he was.

"Блядь," he grumbled beneath his breath, the sharpness of his scowl never softening. "Have you been following me?" He asked, sharp and viciously. "You have been every where today." Causing problems, but he'd address that later.

He physically flinched at the curse, prepared for whatever else might happen to him, Yuuri’s eyes squeezed shut as he tried to make himself as small as possible against the building wall. He had no idea how he managed to run into the same person multiple times during the day, much less how he was able to physically run into them. He was normally a rather observant person, but when he became too observant, too hypervigilant, he tended to get overwhelmed and that was when things went downhill.

Like today, because he was already jumpy and anxious as it was, and he really didn’t want to get beaten up by this big Russian guy.

“No, I swear,” Yuuri practically squeaked in fright, afraid to open his eyes lest he see a fist being thrown at his face, his arms still up above his head so that anyone walking by might think that he was in the process of being mugged or harassed, which Yuuri thought he totally was.

“I am so, so sorry I’ve caused you problems. I swear I didn’t mean it,” he promised, venturing a cautious peek up at the man. Nope, he was just as scary as Yuuri remembered. His eyes were shut once more.

"Из-за любви к" Kavinsky was grumbling, shoulders tense and gray eyes sharp with something. Groveling was pathetic, embarrassing even and the Russian wondered what the hell life had done to the boy to make him so fragile. Did he suffer a fate like Kavinsky, but instead broke as a response to the harsh realities of the world and the fact that, no matter what, they were not worth anything?

K lashed out at the world as a response, did this boy cower instead?

"Pull yourself ********," he snapped, looking more like he might splinter and explode violently if Yuuri continued to hide behind his arms. A hiss of breath slithered out between clenched teeth and K's jaw ticked as he continued to scowl. "Do you realize that your - " he stopped, feeling the words grate against his throat.

"Is this how you always handle situations? Run until someone stops you?" If so, the boy was more spineless than he thought, which would be insane, considering how spineless he viewed him now.

Tamping down on his instinct to react violently, against someone who was clearly non-violent and afraid, was difficult but Kavinsky was an a*****e, not a mugger. He solved problems with his fists more often than not, because the people he butted against could take it.

This kid?

Definitely not.

"черт возьми" He sighed, hand uncurling enough to push through his cropped white locks.

He would have liked to not cower under the fierce gaze of the angry, irritable Russian, but somehow it seemed to be keeping the man at bay if at least a little. If Yuuri showed his face, showed that he wasn’t a cowered, maybe this man would want to make sure he went right back to being fearful with physical violence or who knew what else.

From what he could see, this might be his best option at making it out of this interaction unscathed, as pathetic as it was.

“Not preferably,” he mumbled timidly as he peered somewhat curiously up at the man between his arms. He hadn’t run from the wolf, but he was convinced he would have been killed, anyway. This interaction he might be able to get out with just some scratches and bruises.

“I’d rather not get into these situations at all,” Yuuri admitted, and against his better judgment, he slowly lowered his arms from protecting his face, although he still stared, wide eyed at the man who looked about twice his size. He kept his hands curled against his chest, pressing against his heart as though trying to get it to calm down.

“I really am sorry. Is there anything I could do to make it up to you?” Because if it was money he wanted, that was no problem. If he wanted to punch his face, well… that was not ideal.

Kavinsky was barely contained rage and aggression, a raging storm confined bones and muscle and human skin. The more he looked at the dark haired boy, cowering and frightened, the more he looked like he was going to break open and release everything that had been building within him for years. All he could see was everything that he could have become if he had let the system break him instead of building this hard exterior and gruff attitude.

But Yuuri wasn't anything like him and he could tell just from the the quality of his clothing.

"Then why do you run?" He asked, leaning in when hands lowered even if he kept his own balled into tight fist locked at his side. Stormy eyes flicked away from the boy's face to his fingers and the way he smoothed his fingers over the space of his chest where his heart would be. The image of Ellis flashed brightly in his mind, a movement so familiar Kavinsky would have sworn that he was looking at someone else, someone who wasn't nearly as short as Yuuri but was still as soft and fragile as him.

"Don't have a god damn panic attack on me," he snapped, unable to bite back his nasty bark. "то, что гребаный беспорядок" He mumbled to himself, head shaking as he took a step back. The scowl never softened even though he looked less like he was going to beat the boy's face into the ground.

"Watch where you're ******** going for starters. Quit staring at people like you're ******** invisible, because you stand out and you can start by giving me your goddamn name."

Yuuri flinched as the man leaned closer, his hands gripping tighter to the fabric of his shirt over his heart as it pounded noisily in his chest. Why did he run? Probably because he really was a coward and didn’t want to get into these situations.

"I thought you would hurt me," he admitted quietly and truthfully as to why he ran. Physically, emotionally; it didn’t really matter. He’d obviously upset the man and caused him trouble, so of course he would expect some kind of retribution. The demand for him to not have a panic attack definitely wasn’t helping. Yuuri flinched again, a small squeak of distress escaping as the man barked at him, his shoulders curling in slightly as though to try and protect himself or make himself look smaller.

There was a flicker of shame and exasperation in Yuuri’s eyes as the man mumbled insults in Russian at him, and although he bit his tongue against responding out loud, he couldn’t quite control himself enough not to glance away in embarrassment. So maybe he was a mess. It wasn’t as though he could help it.

"My name’s Yuuri. And I’m sorry… I won’t look at people, then," he promised, his voice a little strained between trying to hold his breath to make it less obvious that he was having a difficult time controlling his breathing. Not having a panic attack when there was a guy who looked like he could beat him to a pulp towering over him was easier said than done.

I thought you would hurt me.

K's jaw ticked, something sharper in his gaze at the admission. "If you treat the world like it's going to hurt you, then that's all it will do." While he spoke no less harshly, there was a hint of something softer. Experience maybe or the harsh reality of understanding.

"World won't do you any favors if your instinct is to cower." Kavinsky was sneering now, head shaking and teeth flashing. His teeth disappeared as his face shifted back into something mean and stony, his resting face. In his eyes, a flash of disappointment because all he could see was someone that let the world beat him down. Pathetic.

Kavinsky wondered where the boy's fight was. Did he possess it or was he only capable of the flight response.

A sharper realization had his brows lifting and adam's apple bobbing. "Вы понимаете меня?" If so, that opened up a whole different host of issues and doors.

"Do you always give up this easily?"

He kept his eyes lowered, away from the angry man’s face, hoping that maybe one of the passersby would care enough to stop and ask if everything was okay. But he already knew people tended to keep to themselves. After all, who would really want to get involved? He certainly wouldn’t want to.

"I don’t need any favors from the world," he responded, just as quietly as before, but there was a slight edge to his voice. Perhaps bitterness. The world had done enough that Yuuri was perfectly content being on his own. The less favors he received, the less he would owe. If that meant he had to cower, then so be it.

"Are you not going to tell me your name?" he asked, wishing the man would stop looking at him the way he was. Like he was worse than garbage. Even though Yuuri thought the same thing about himself didn’t mean that he liked the feeling.

And then he froze when the man voiced his next question in Russian. Yuuri wasn’t sure what he’d done to even suggest that he understood the man, but he felt himself tense. His face darkened even more as he kept his eyes focused on anything but the tall, intimidating man in front of him. He hadn’t wanted the man to know he understood him, not wanting him to use that to his advantage against Yuuri, but if he already suspected…

No no, this was bad. This was very bad. Yuuri could feel his heart rate picking up in his panic, even though he still clutched tightly to his chest, trying to coax it to calm down. He didn’t like the tone of the man’s voice. It was dangerous and he needed to figure out a way to get away, and fast.

"Yes, I give up. I give up," he barely choked out, his eyes squeezed shut as he backed further up against the wall. Maybe if this man got tired of him he would just… hit him and leave. Or just leaving would be good, too. "I give up."

The longer Kavinsky stood across from Yuuri, the sicker he felt. Part of it was the irritation and the other part was the disappointment that had his stomach twisting.

What good did it do to grovel? It didn't stop the bad from happening and only made one pathetic. Life was not made to be lived by the soft hearted. Kavinsky's had certainly taught him such, molded and sculpting the hard-edged barely a man man before Yuuri.

"Do you even care for it?" K asked, trying to gauge what his name would mean to the man. He conceded though, last name rolling off his tongue instead of his first. "Kavinsky." If looked for, that was the name that would get answers at least. Only Ellis got to call him Pietro anymore.

"достаточно." His voice stayed firm but the sharp edge seemed to have disappeared when the boy appeared to collapse into himself. "Вы слишком легко сдаетесь." He didn't sound mad, but disappointed.

Kavinsky was stepping back trying to find something salvageable in the other boy. "Learn to stand for yourself." And the world won't owe you anything.

He spit to the side and turned his back on Yuuri. "Stay out of my way next time."
