Stellerite waited an entire hour to see if Kari would meet her like she was supposed to.

An entire hour was wasted because of her brother's screw up and now the blonde didn't know if she was going to even be given the chance to try and repair the damage. Dealing with the reprimand had been frustrating enough, because Alkaid couldn't find out about Epi's blunder under any circumstances.

Night effectively ruined by the super senshi's lack of arrival, Stella had fished out her communication crystal and barked into it, irritation barely hidden. "Lieutenant Epidote," she called clearly, making sure her voice didn't waver because of who might have been listening.

Really, she thought their communication devices needed an upgrade, this crystal tech was outdated.

"Meet me out our usual rendezvous point. In 15." The strain her voice would have been barely noticeable to anyone that was not, in fact, her brother but it hinted at a, be there or you're in trouble.

He'd been skulking in the shadows, lurking in wait of finding an opportunity to present itself in which he could retrieve a good amount of energy from - be it a shopper out too late in the evening, someone stumbling out of a bar, an aimless hobo. It didn't matter at this point, no, all that mattered was finding some sort of replacement energy to satisfy the Powers That Be.

When his communicator flashed, it briefly startled him. As his sister's voice echoed from the purple crystal, he found himself clutching the glowing stone even tighter than before. What did she want this time? Had she found Kari? Her voice had lacked the usual enthusiasm it held, sending him nothing but foreboding feelings.

Sighing, he straightened up his shoulders and disappeared into the shadows, making his way towards their usual meet-up spot.

Epi was taking too long.

Impatience was not something that Stellerite broadcasted often, because she only ever projected what she wanted to, but all of her body language screamed I'm pissed. Her arms were folded over her chest, fingers high enough to dig in and wrinkle her puffy sleeves, pale brows were knitted together in something akin to a scowl, and one foot was tapping away in the concrete.

She felt him before she saw him, expression still sour as she unwound her arms and practically stomped his way. "She didn't show," she hissed, clearly saying, and it's your fault. "And you got your butt kicked last time we ran a practical, so." She set her jaw, gave him a look that implied she wasn't in the mood for his potentially smart a** comments.

"It's time to get physical." She held out her hand for her lanyard, which really was a terrible weapon, to shimmer into her hand.

Wait, what?

She hadn't even give him the opportunity to defend himself, immediately rushing at him and pulling out her oh so intimidating lanyard. What was with her - he had said he was sorry and it still wasn't good enough for her??

The thought didn't settle well with him, especially considering how he'd been nearly eaten by ghosts and beaten up several nights that week in his desperate attempts at gathering enough energy to make up for the loss of her pet senshi's easy energy gathering. Didn't she see how hard he was trying? Why couldn't she just accept that the Kari thing happened and they needed to move on?!

"What are you going to do, scold me to death?"

His eyes rolled as his arms crossed over his chest. He felt a nudge from the remote in his pocket, giving the teenager a spur of the moment idea.

Reaching down, he pulled it free from his waistband and moved to point the rather pointless device in his sister's direction. Making an exaggerated point of clicking one of the buttons, he said allowed, "Hey, maybe this can prove useful for once. Mute."

Clicking the button again, his gesture's intent was obvious: he was tired of hearing her nagging.

"You wish," Stellerite snapped, her irritation bubbled up enough to the surface that it rippled across her skin and threatened to taint all of the hard work she put into her fronts. Her heels clicked as she closed space between them.

When the remote came out, the woman's eyes narrowed, then her brows arched and her pretty face twisted into a scowl. "Grow up!" She snapped, swinging her arm back and slapping at him with the metal part of her lanyard.

It probably wouldn't do much damage, but it would annoy him at least. Maybe even distract so that when she drew her hand back to slap him, she'd get a hit in.

The lanyard came whipping down across his arm and although he wore sleeves, the metal clip left a stinging after-effect that forced him to let out a pained noise as he looked down at the mark. The distraction proved successful, allowing the Lieutenant's slap to hit him directly across the face. Reeling, he stood there stunned for a moment as his free hand moved to cover the offended cheek.

"Hey, what the hell, Stella?"

He backed up several feet, the anger growing in his own expression as his left hand clutched tighter around the remote. Instinct told him to throw it at her, to get revenge on her for the assault, but brotherly habit reigned him back. Epidote was taller and stronger than his older sister and he knew from previous experience that using force could end up hurting her more than intended.

Even if he really wanted to punch her back at that very moment.

"Cut it out, you're being ridiculous."

Pause.

"More than usual, at least."

Stellerite's slap had managed to startle her and she stared at the reddening cheek of her brother with wide eyes and a gasp caught on the tip of her tongue. It remained for a fraction of a second before blue eyes had narrowed again. She had made a choice and she was sticking to it.

"Kari didn't show up." She reiterated because that simple fact made her mad, an emotion Stella hardly displayed because it was unladylike and not useful.

Her little pet project had been going so well before she was spooked. "And you were an embarrassment against that senshi." Not that she was much better at combat but she shouldn't have to be. Not when she had Epi.

"Don't you get how special you and I are? Miss Alkaid doesn't have agents under her, she's got us and we can't afford screw ups like this."

His cheeks reddened further at being called an embarrassment and it hadn't been from the recent slap he'd received. His hand left his face and fell to his belt, where he quietly tucked the remote back into place. No, he was better than that.

"Hey, at least I tried something, instead of just standing around! It's not like... it's not like I'm throwing my body at every senshi just to get a little bit of their energy!"

He stepped forward, towering over his older sister as his own eyes narrowed in return. That same green color that they shared, daring her to call him out again, daring her to insult him and push him over the edge further.

"I told you I was sorry and I've been making up for it ever since. Mistakes are going to happen - you can't expect perfection when I'm just starting off at this."

Epidote was taller, by several inches, but Stellerite didn't fold into herself when he stepped closer. Instead, she stood as tall as she could manage, chin lifted and back straight. "That's not what I do," she snapped, fingers winding the lanyard into a ball in her hand, metal clip biting into her palm. He was implying that she was basically whoring herself out and if she hadn't already slapped him, she might do so again.

"Kari was a special case. Some people are more malleable when there's a promise of something. Others can be swayed by words." She didn't need to justify herself or her actions. "I don't fight, that's not where my skills lie. I can defend myself if I have to but my job is to get information and to turn people." She had been so close to being able to draw Kari into the dark folds of the Negaverse before this incident.

Her other hand lifted so she could press her index finger into his chest. "Your job is to do as your told. If you don't know what's going to happen, don't risk it if it doesn't involve using your fists to get away. You should have called me the second things went wrong. Epi, it's not my life on the line. It's yours if she found out."

The same, familiar pang of fear revisited his heart as it had that night when he'd confessed his failure to his angry sister. She was even more volatile now than she had been that horrible evening when he'd nearly killed Kari. It didn't take hold of his entirety as it did that night, though the reminder of what could go wrong definitely still hung over his head like the figurative Sword of Damocles.

But he was tired of her tossing it out there, a quick and easy dig at reminding him at how utterly inferior he was.

"No, I get it. We wouldn't want to tarnish your reputation, since you were the one to vouch for me at the start."

His now free hand moved up to offer the other Lieutenant a mock salute as he assured her, the bitterness clear in his voice. "You got it, Stella. Your brainless muscle will do as its told from here on out, don't you worry."

Nevermind that bringing Kari's starseed would probably have awarded him with praise from any other General. Why Alkaid had interest in such a trusting twit was beyond the blonde teenager's rash comprehension.

The blonde remembered why she rarely let her anger bubble to the surface; because it twisted and made her ugly. It brought about the type of fighting she abhorred, especially with the single person she wanted to stand by her side as she took on the world. Fighting with her brother was the worst, because she could never judge his limits the way she could judge others because there were so many more emotions tied up in everything she said to him.

"That's not - " Stella stopped, hand dropping and lips pressing together. Epi had a point and was sure driving it home. "God Epi." Her hand was on her face, pressing against her temples when she closed her eyes. How did she make him understand that she was angry and frustrated and scared.

"It's not about that. God, Kari not showing up is the icing on the cake but - " Her voice started to shake. "I vouched for you, I dragged you into this." It's my fault if your life is compromised.

"I just - I need you to be more careful. I need you to understand that this game is dangerous and there are no tutorials that'll guarantee success. If things go south, it needs to be on me. Not you."

The high level of sass within him dissipated as Stella's impervious attitude began to shake and break down. He wasn't prepared for her to cave first - he'd already known that he'd lose in the argument, he always did. She was smarter, she was the thinker - he really was the muscle of the two, with her the brains behind the operation.

"Look, I get it, okay?"

One arm reached out and held to her shoulder. Compassion wasn't his strongest suit - girls did better with all that emotional junk, but he couldn't just stand there and do nothing. "If we don't snag Kari, we'll find someone else. There's always another path - just like in the video games. No tutorials, but there's always a side door that nobody ever thinks to look for."

Offering a smile (though it was also fairly forced), he shrugged his shoulders. "You're the best thing the Negaverse has ever seen, Stel. Trust me, you'll impress Miss Alkaid something fierce with whatever idea that comes outta you next. And I'll be there, helping out."

Stellerite had to take a deep, shaky breath as her brother did his best to console her. Inwardly, she was frustrated that she had cracked and broken so quickly but Epi was quite literally the most important person in the world to her and not someone she was willing to abandon when she was on the path to some sweet personal gain.

"Okay," she replied, closing her eyes for one blissful moment before she opened them and looked up. "Right, there are other options." Of course there were, but emotions had gotten the better of her today.

"Damn right I'm the best," she cracked, grinning just a bit before she reached for her brother's hand. "I'll figure something else out. Everything will be fine."

It would have to be, if not, she'd make it so.

"Let's go home Epi."

His arm slid over her shoulder while she hugged against his waist. "Sounds like a plan."

He gave her a squeeze as he navigated the abrupt turn-around. It worried him that Stella was so concerned on his behalf, but he had to remind himself that for as much as she thought things over, she was notorious for over thinking as well. Maybe, just maybe, this was one of those situations.

"Dinner can even be on me, tonight."

Failing to mention the fact their father had given him his allowance early, the two shifted back into their civilian forms as they made their way to Penny's apartment complex, where an hour later a pizza would find its way to her kitchen table.
