So far, his time on the Island hadn't been too bad. Some basic training, some basic information sessions, that one mission to the desert with a giant monster under the sand (that people said was normal?!), and a whole lot of really boring shifts doing grunt work in the infirmary. He was fine with the grunt work, but it wasn't very exciting. What he needed, ultimately, was more training. He was still doing his daily running in order to be prepared to for quick escapes, and he had added stairs to the regiment. He'd also taken to beating up training dummies. However, he'd not had too much actual combat, and he was beginning to worry about that. What if a situation arose and he failed because he sucked at fighting? What he needed was practice with actual fighting against actual living things. A training spar. Someone down at the infirmary had assured him that spars were mostly safe now - little chance of dying. So Travis decided it wouldn't hurt to give one a try. Not that...he had a partner to spar with. He had decided to solve his "no sparring partner" problem by hovering around down at the training grounds. He was just going to ask anyone he found if they wanted to fight.

Anyone would come in the form of one Liam Johnson, Moon trainee. He was on his way back towards the dorms from the cafeteria, a half eaten apple in one hand, and a bottle of water in the other. He'd stopped in for a quick snack before stopping off to change his clothes before heading out for a run.

Travis was on the look out for anyone that didn't seem angry or like they were having a bad day. He thoroughly expected everyone to be at least a little better versed in fighting than he was, but he didn't want anyone taking out their bad-day on him. It was one thing to lose because you're learning, and another thing to lose because someone just used you as a punching bag. He spotted someone who seemed pleasant enough, and not like he was running to or from somewhere. Just moving along, having a bite to eat - Yeah. He'd do. "Hey!" Travis waved an arm and started jogging towards said person, "Hey you! Guy with the apple! You busy? Wanna spar?" Travis was good at getting to the point sometimes.

Liam had a mouth full of apple when the call hit his ears, so it took him a moment to chew and swallow before he could answer. "Liam," he'd correct pleasantly, offering a smile to the other young man. "Moon trainee." "And no, not too busy." He had some time before he had to show up for afternoon duties. A spar would work just as good as a run as far as a good means to kill some time was concerned. He'd still be getting a work out, and honestly, this was a better. Liam had gotten better with his weapon, but there was always room for improvement. The apple, mostly core at this point, was tossed towards a garbage can on the edge of the path. The bottle he'd set in the grass once he'd made met the other trainee on the training field.

"Oh. Right." Travis scratched at his temple, committing the name to memory. "Liam, got it. And that's great! I've been hoping I could find someone to spar with." He was already walking back towards the training field, happy to have found someone. It was a good few moments before he remembered it was polite to introduce oneself, too. "Travis. Also a Moon Trainee. Nice to meet you." As the settled into a spot on the training field, Travis realized he had absolutely no idea what he was doing. Was there any special sort of protocol to follow here? "So, uh, do we just...start?"

Hands empty, Liam could summon his weapons, duel tonfa with glowing blue lines that circles the ends and runes that raced down the outside edges. He gave them a spin before tightening his grip and bringing his arms up, on the ready. "Nice to meet you, Travis." Another grin, that competitive, athletic side starting to kick in. "And you can go ahead and start us off, since you're at a little bit of a disadvantage, being so new."

If Travis had to describe it, he would have said Liam looked comfortable just slipping into a ready stance like that. At least to his eyes that's what it was. "Okay," he said, summoning his own weapons. Clawed gauntlets formed over both arms, something Travis didn't know if he'd ever get used to. "Yeah, okay," he said again. He did two small jumps, like he was ready to spring forward then thought better of it, before finally gathering up the courage to actually spring forward and throw a closed-fist punch in Liam's direction. HP: 40/40 Damage: 6 Charge: 1/3 Beejoux xD Liam, so nice. and ahh Trainee dice~

Liam waited patiently, smile an odd mix, both confident yet encouraging. However past experience would have taught him by now that getting cocky early always had a way of coming back around to bite him in the a**. He was hoping to avoid that this time around, if possible. So when Travis came at him, he moved automatically, tonfa coming up to deflect part of the blow, though that closed fist managed to slip past to clip him across the shoulder. He turned with the impact, letting it swing him around, and he brought up the other tonfa, swinging it around to aim a strike at the other boy's upper arm. HP: 34 DMG: 7 CHG: 1/3

Travis flinched. The hit was was fairly solid, and since he'd not had much combat experience it was just as surprising as it was damaging to him and his shield. His return swing was a little wild, most of his momentum having been lost when he flinched. It was more open-handed smack than punch. This was going to be a bit harder than he'd thought it would turn out to be. HP: 33/40 Damage: 4 Charge: 2/3

Liam's counter to the blow was a quick swing of the opposite tonfa, trying to knock the other boy's arm away before it could connect. His reaction time wasn't quite fast enough, but he was fairly certain he'd managed to deflect someone of the power behind it, and also managed to click Travis on the shoulder at the same time. HP: 30 DMG: 2 CHG: 2/3

The blow to his shoulder was answered with another swing that didn't have too much behind it. Travis took the moment to try and step back and away. "Not used to this." He said with an exhale. HP: 31/40 Damage: 2 Charge: 2/3

Liam gave a very small wince before chuckling. "Well that's understandable. Have you ever had to handle weapons before, let alone fight with them competently?" It wasn't meant to be a jab at the other boy's pride, just a question. Before Day Zero, Liam hadn't had any experience with violence or weaponry. He was still a little shocked he'd made it through all that, and knew a lot of his survival was thanks to the rest of the university crew going through it with him. He kept moving while he talked, because what was the point of training otherwise? A quick step forward, and a flip of his wrist to bring the tonfa around so his forearm supported it, and he'd thrust the length of it forward at the other teainee's chest. HP: 28 DMG: 5 CHG: 3/3

"Nope," Travis said with a small shake of his head. He'd never really been in any fights, let alone with weapons. "It's all knew to me." He'd tried to keep moving himself, keeping himself a reasonable distance away from Liam, but not too far. Both of their weapons required a close target. Still, Travis wasn't quite ready for the tonfa to hit his chest. Good move, Liam, good move. "Oof!" Travis said, taking half a step back before forcing himself forward. There was only one way to learn how to do this. Another punch was aimed at Liam. HP: 26/40 Damage: 6 Charge: 3/3

Liam chuckled again, but it was short lived as Travis swiped at him. The gauntleted fist caught him in the chin, sending his head to the side, and he backed away quickly. "Well, can't expect you o be a world class fighter right out the gate then, can they?" Though that last hit had smarted a bit, and it was evident by the way the Moon trainee rubbed at the side of his jaw with the back of one hand. If it was any sort of indication of the future, Travis wouldn't have much trouble learning how to use his weapon well. He might even have had a bit of a leg up on it. His weapon was something he wore, rather than something he held. Liam had to wonder if that was easier to deal with. The tonfa still managed to remain a bit of a challenge, even after many hours upon hours of practice with them. He swung out with one, but the angle was off, and the end of it whipped past the other trainee without connecting. HP: 22 DMG: - CHG: 3/3

"I suppose not," Travis replied, even though he wore a grin after that last hit. "Everyone has to start somewhere." He stepped back even as he said it. "How often do you practice?" Practice was, of course, the whole point of this endeavor. So far, not too bad. He balled his hands up into fists again and stepped in for another punch, using his right hand. HP: 26/40 Damage: 3 Charge: 3/3
