The better part of Chance's morning had been spent on duty, then napping, and now he was in search of a certain blond haired, grumpy hunter whom he hadn't yet seen.

And of all places, seemed to be lurking out in the library. Chance peered around a tall shelf, then leaned against it, hands in the pockets of his jeans.

"Homework?" he asked lightly, brows raised.

Otto was trying to learn himself some s**t. He hated studying. Hated the effort it took him to memorize anything. But he was doing it anyway. Rather than use ignorance and forgetfulness as a shield, he planned to better himself like he had in that dream with Alice. He wasn't a fighter, but he was going to learn how to be.

Step one; learn what the Hell all this legacy garbage people talked about was.

And so Otto was reading an ordinary book on butterflies with a look of utter perplexing on his face when Chance came knocking. He looked up, giving the man a smirk. "Pretty much." Rather than ignore the man or make him do any of the work for attention, Otto set his notes aside and stood up to greet Chance himself; with a hug and kiss.

Which also took effort, since Chance's face was always harder to reach due to issues of the vertical nature.

"How's it goin'?"

Otto doing any sort of research felt - and looked - a little weird, but it wasn't totally unprecedented, Chance thought. He felt a flutter of pleased surprise as Otto stood, Chance automatically leaning down to return the kiss, more so just so Otto wouldn't have to get up on tiptoe.

"Hi. It goes," said Chance, smoothing an idle hand through Otto's hair. "Glad we're not both kids again."

He glanced around his boyfriend to the books littering the table. "What are you looking for, anyway?"

"That makes two of us." He'd not talked to Chance when he'd regained his memories after meeting with Alice. He'd still been in his teenage body, and knowing Chance wouldn't have his own memories yet, felt it would have been awkward for them both to meet again. Not until now, anyway. Now he could better appreciate Chance in his full grown glory, and to take in that smile that was just for him.

Otto looked back at his books, rubbing his neck in a bashful attempt at nonchalance.

"Uh.. Legacy s**t. The whole thing kinda confuses me whenever folks bring it up. But I feel like it's important, yanno? And like uh.. colour theory s**t." His face reddened. He wasn't focused at all. He had too many questions and not enough focus to concentrate on one thing at a time.

"Some dreams I've had made me wanna hunker down and get me some learnin' in."

Chance hadn't regained his memories until everyone else had, and mostly was still trying to figure out what the heck had even happened. He carded his fingers absently through Otto's hair in a continuous motion, eyebrows still raised.

"You were a cute kid," he said, sounding amused, "But I like you better grown up. And what sort of dreams?"

Chance's hand fell away, resting lightly on Otto's waist. "I don't know anything about much Legacy stuff either," he admitted. 'But what do you mean, 'color theory?' And what sort of dreams?"

Relaxed, Otto let himself enjoy the closeness he had with Chance. Small gestures and absent contact that he'd usually be leery of in public. He tried not to allow his anxieties about what other people thought of his ruin what he had. A feat he felt was hard to win.

"Cute?" He snorted. "I was an a**." But Chance knew this, and so did he. He was still an a**. Just taller.... ish.

"Well um... it's this dream I had when I was stuck as a kid." He began, letting the shield Chance made around him be his comfort zone as he opened his mind and heart. "Alice pulled me into it. Ain't the first time I met her. But there was this um.."

He shook his head, and started from the beginning...

. . .

"...so anyway." He said with a huff, after a lengthly recount of his time in the dream realm. "Colour theory. Cause of the dream, and the Red Eyes s**t I heard about from.. well." He shrugged, since they'd both had a bad experience with that lovely side effect. "Colour s**t seems to come into play a lot here. Red eyes.. Green eyes.. that blue s**t that appeared on Tenya. They all got different um... aspects to'em, right? So I dunno I just thought..."

He moved his papers around, feeling a little self conscious. "I dunno if I'm headin' in the right direction with this at all, but I can't sit around and wait for it to come to me. I gotta make mistakes and find a way on my own."

He liked it when Otto was openly affectionate. Granted, Chance liked it when he was stubborn and scowly faced too, but the open affection was a rare and precious thing that Chance was careful to savor for as long as he could while he had it.

But it usually also meant that something was on Otto's mind.

"Yes, but you were a cute a**," said Chance in amusement, giving him a little squeeze. The smile faded somewhat at the mention of Alice, his expression shifting to one of contemplation as the story slowly unfolded, growing more and more curious and thoughtful the more it went on.

"Ah, yes," he said, after Otto was done, a slightly wry smile tugging at Chance's lips. "Yes, I remember the whole Red Eye s**t." Only too well, as a matter of fact. The bruises had taken ages to disappear fully, at least on the outside, even if both of them had still been trapped by the memories later on.

"Red eyes, green eyes...blue," Chance murmured. "Roy G Biv, right? The color theory?"

They had moved to the table for Otto's recollection, and Chance was resting one of his free hands on Otto's knee, a gentle reassurance. His other flipped through a book, Chance frowning at the pages.

"Wasn't Alice the one on the beach too after the whole - " He waved the book-sifting hand. " - Red Eyes thing? I don't think you're entirely wrong. Who was the figure in green, the one attacking Alice in your dream?"

Otto gave a sheepish look to Chance. He didn't care to recall the Red Eyes incident between them. Chance and Maebe had suffered a great deal from Otto thanks to that night. It was horrifying to allow that truth into the forefront of his mind. Nightmares are what reminded him such events had happened.

Otto shrugged. "I just figured colour theory was a good start, since each colour effect has a different... thing." He rubbed his neck again, thankful for the affection Chance gave to him. It helped to lure out the information he was still mulling over in his head.
"It might have less to do with normal theory and more to do with the legacies they're attached to.." That made more sense, now that he said it.

"Yeah, that was Alice." He smirked a bit, remembering fondly the wall of pies he had summoned. He really liked Alice.

He became serious again when Chance mentioned the green figure. "That kid.. he didn't have a face ether. It was made of vines. Alice said she accidentally woke him up and now he won't go back to sleep. I didn't catch his name... but I recognize him. I think he's the kid I gave my wish to..."

"...on the same night the red eyes had happened. Like, right before s**t hit the fan, but after the vines attacked the base." His brows rose, as a figurative lightbulb seemed to become a little brighter.

"I'm s**t at rememberin' faces, but you'd think I'd remember faceless kids that I lend my wishes to. Geez..."

The sheepish look received a gentle squeeze of Otto's knee from Chance as he mulled over the books. The nightmares hadn't stopped, but at least Otto knew where to go now if Chance wasn't spending the night, even if he did most days.

"What other colors are there?" Chance asked, reaching for a pen. "Red, we know...and green, apparently. That's two, so two legacies, I don't know a lot about them, either."

He made a scribble on a blank piece of paper - the word red, with a line, and then underneath it: Alice (?) + virus + bad things. In another spot, he put green with a line, and underneath that: kid with no face, lots of vines, connection to Alice(?), Otto wish given to(?)

He tapped the pen on the paper, gaze narrowed slightly.

"If that kid was made of vines in your dream, and vines attacked the base, then the two have got to be connected," said Chance. "It's too coincidental otherwise. So green has something to do with vines, or nature, or some s**t like that. Where does Alice factor into all of this, do you have any idea? Has she always been helpful?"

"Blue is one. I saw it.. for a second anyway. I think it's Protection." He nodded. "Remember I said I met you and Grandpa in my dream? The whole time I was fighting, I felt you two at my back, keepin' me from harm. Somethin' like that." He tapped his lip with the end of his pen, chewing on the cap that sat there.

"Alice has always been helpful. I remember seein' her everywhere in the weird dreams I've had. I think I saw her back when I was in that nightmare with Gale way back when... When we fought Peter Pan."

Another note was made on the paper - blue, underlined, and then in parentheses beside it (protection possibly???) along with a little absent doodle of a shield because Chance couldn't quite help himself.

"So...when the green viney thing gets out of control," said Chance slowly, adding a few lines to the shield, gaze slightly unfocused as he thought. "Protection - blue - is what keeps things from getting too shitty? Or, well, protects the ones who need protecting or something like that."

His eyes came back into focus, a slight smile tugging at his lips. Rather than say anything sappy and risk Otto rolling his eyes at the thought of Otto thinking of him and his grandfather, Chance merely lifted a hand and gently smoothed a few stray strands of hair from Otto's forehead before letting his fingers fall away again.

"So wait - dial it back." Chance made a rolling gesture with his hand. "What was that about Peter Pan? Like...like Peter Pan and the Lost Boys Peter Pan?"

"I guess? I mean, it's what saved me, anyway. That and just not wanting to die, I guess." He could have let the thing devour him, just to be rid of the constant need to puke or forget everything important for a chance at a remedy.

Otto flicked his eyes up at Chance as he smoothed strands from his face, carefully assessing his features. It was hard to articulate how much he appreciated and loved to have Chance by his side, to have him look at him like that all the time. Even if he vowed to better appreciate the man he loved, it was always hard when the opportunities were there, but his own insecurity was unwilling to part with it's pride. He instead gave Chance's knee a quick squeeze of response.

"If by lost boys you mean a bunch of dead kids trapped in purgatory cause Pete Pan is a d**k? Yeah." Otto replied nonchalantly.

"I would really prefer you not die," said Chance dryly. "I kind of like you around, in case you haven't noticed."

He drew a little lion as the symbol on the front of the shield he was doodling, but he caught Otto's eye, the gentle look that was reserved only for him. As fleeting as it was, it was still noted and appreciated and adored, because Otto was not good at talking, but his face gave it away anyway.

Chance paused in his drawing to turn his head back to Otto, eyebrows raised.

"Wait. Seriously? Why would he do that?"

"I noticed. And I like bein' alive too." He remarked more seriously than he meant to. Even if he naturally gravitated towards giving up and lamenting, he at least now knew this much. "Might be cause I like livin' with you around. Maybe." He didn't give Chance the satisfaction of seeing his face as he said this, rather instead doodling in the margins of his notes. Skulls and other graffiti mostly.

Otto shook his head. "I don't remember if we found out why he did it. We did free the kid's souls.. I think. That's when I think I saw Alice... and some other thing. A red monster trapped in a cage. But that was so long ago, I dunno what of it is relevant anymore."

He wished he had a better memory. Details faded and blurred over time like a pebble smoothed by the river. He had a vague idea of things that had happened, but anything that stuff was only horrid images that haunted his nightmares.

"I feel like I don't know anything. I always thought it was cause I was too dumb to get it. Maybe I just ain't been puttin' the right pieces together though."

"I guess I could survive a little longer, than," Chance deadpanned. He added a flower deliberately to one of Otto's skulls, leaves curling out of its eye sockets and spilling out onto the ground.

"Souls..." Chance mulled over this inside of his head, along with the monster comment. "Well, that can't be good, if there's monsters - that red thing must be something to do with the red in general - what color would you say Peter Pan is? Red, too?"

He added monsters underneath the red column, then glanced sidways at Otto, his elbow on the table, leaning forward a little so that his head was propped up on his free hand.

"You're definitely not dumb," said Chance with a little smile. "And this is a lot of s**t to put together. You've already made one connection today."

He drew a line from vine kid under green to vines taking over Deus, which he'd written as well, adding little arrows to connect them.

"It's like a big puzzle with only half of the pieces."
