After their chance encounter at the cafe a few weeks ago Shiloh had messaged Ellis, keeping well on his promise not to disappear again. Though he did not want to be seen as clingy he texted a quick good morning and a quick good night almost every day, finding great delight any time that the conversation happened to last more than a few words. Soon their conversations began to span hours, pictures sent back and forth through out the day, starting with the cutest bunny in the world, Poe.

It seemed so hard to believe that everything was going so well these past few weeks. Everything seemed to just want to work in his favor, and happiness seemed almost endless. Even his anxiety seemed to slowly subside for a while, finding excitement to know everything he could from Ellis each day. Shiloh began to feel so wonderful, and had gathered just enough confidence to send Ellis a text just the week before, inviting him on a small mid-day outing.

After the other redhead agreed, Shiloh made sure to remind him daily of their outing plans, truly and deeply not wanting to find himself alone on that day. And when the day came... Well, He found himself anxiously holding onto his phone, but not uncomfortably so. Rather, he was far too excited for later that day. A simple text was sent in the morning to confirm their meetup location.

Good morning, Ellis! I'm so excited to see you today! Where is your apartment, I'll come by in an hour or so, then we can go to the park together. biggrin

Ellis had woken up for the day when the dim, red glow of his alarm clock read 4:43, for no particular reason at all. He had simply opened his eyes to the still dark of the morning and found himself unable to sleep once his mind began to tick. It wasn't unusual to find that whistful whimsy itching at his fingertips in the silence before sunrise, so he just pulled his legs free of the limbs that were tangled around his and slipped quietly to the little, battered writing desk after he opened the door of Poe's cage. The sleek little animal rustled but didn't come out.

The time ticked by, the sunrise came and went. A gruff voice said its goodbyes on the way to work and Ellis smiled and nodded between ink-stained fingers and scrawled words. He felt the most at ease in his comfort zone, with Poe winding between his ankles and -

s**t, what time was it?

Deep in his daydreams, the thought struck him and he rebounded so quickly that he nearly toppled his chair clean over. Suddenly reminded that he had been promising Shiloh that they would hang out, he rushed back to his bedroom and began scrambling through the clothes littered around his floor. It only took two pairs of pants for him to find the pocket he had shoved his cellphone into - with a missed text message 20 minutes old.

Groaning at himself, he opened it and typed up a quick answer:

[To Shiloh: I'm so sorry! I wasn't paying attention to the time. I'm at Redfort Village apartments, #4a]

After the text message was sent, Shiloh clung to the phone, atleast for the first five or so minutes. It wasn't all that late in the morning. Heck, it was barely 10:30, and they didn't exactly set a solid time for their outing, so there was no reason to panic, right? If anything, the rather anxious young man knew that Ellis answered his text messages eventually and that brought a bit of comfort to him. Instead of worrying his head off, as he was often like to do, he busied himself about his apartment, tidying up.

The place wasn't all too big, maybe even the smallest in the building, as it shared it's walls with the maintenance closet and the building managers' office on the second floor, but it was more than enough for Shiloh. He was always alone and quiet, coming in and out of the building as if a ghost most of the time with nary a peep. Even when he found himself wanting to watch t.v. (which was almost never) or wanting to fill the house with music he refrained from doing so, choosing to wear headphones or sit in the silence instead. With the silence came peace, and with the peace came relaxation and a slip away from his general worries and fears. The landlady herself didn't really like it all too much, if only for the fact that she had to force herself to check on him maybe once every few weeks to make sure he wasn't dead.

Either way, the place was his own, neat and tidy but lovingly lived in, with quilted blankets thrown over the back of the cheap couch in the itty bitty living room and a kitchen right nearby. A small bedroom that seemed to be nothing but a bed hid behind a close door, as did a military-grade spotless bathroom and that was all. Simple, but warm. There weren't any real windows in this small place either, as most seemed to be covered by whatever was outside, be it a tree, the alley, or just constantly in shadow. Every inch of this tiny bit of heaven in an otherwise unsavory neighborhood brought joy to the boy.

What brought even MORE joy was the soft ping! of his phone which he immediately dove for. It was Ellis, of COURSE it was Ellis! They did promise they wouldn't forget this time, and they didn't! So he was...

Shiloh blinked, re-reading the text a few times over, confused. It can't be... Were they really?

[To Ellis: Redfort Village Apartments? Like... Between Cider Tree Road and Chickasaw Blvd? The old brick building that's kinda falling apart, with the staircase that's missing the top of the first three steps, so they covered it with fake tiling and duct tape?]

He waited for a moment, Ellis couldn't be that close, could he...? Had he always been so close...?

[To Ellis: If that's the case then... I'm in apt. 2E, in the back corner near the maintenance closet and the land lady's office.]
[To Ellis: I've been here since the day after we graduated.

There wasn't an answering text message, this time.

Time ticked by with nothing out of the ordinary except the sound of someone, distant at first, drumming their feet too loudly on the stairwell. The batter of feet echoed inside the semi-crumbling plaster walls until it steadily grew louder and louder, though less frequent. The damn halls were too confusing.

"2B, 2C, 2D," the redhead's voice whispered as he counted, eyes zipping from old bronze door hanger to old bronze door hanger, "wait - 2F?"

Ellis drew up short for a moment, eyes narrowed on the plate accusingly. With his cellphone still clutched in his hand, Ellis rounded back and turned left down the fork in the hall instead of right. 2E. One slender hand reached out and tapped its knuckles against the door while Ellis drew a series of deep, struggling breaths; he had taken the stairs a bit too fast. The realization cracked his lips in a wide, pleased smile even as he buckled and braced his hands on his thighs.

Maybe more than a bit.

He reached out to knock again, laughing to himself between gulps of air.

"Shy?"

When no response was immediately received, Shiloh put his phone down for a moment while he cleaned his glasses. It just wasn't possible for them to have lived in the same apartment complex without noticing each other. He knew very well he wasn't the most observant of people but... That would have been too much, even for him. He would have ATLEAST seen his name on the mailbox downstairs, right?

And yet there was a knock at the door and a soft, breathless voice called out his name between laughs.

Shiloh stood up far too quickly, knocking the chair over behind him, but he didn't care! He raced to the door and undid the almost paranoid number of locks on his door before he flung it open and came face to face with the most important man in his life.

"Ellis...?" For just a moment he was confused as well, his brain a little slow on the uptake of what was going on here. But that feeling didn't last for long and the normally nervous young man pulled the other into a tight hug. "Y-you're actually... You've been close this whole time! I-I can't believe it!"

He didn't want to let go, not with a flood of realizations began to fill his mind. Ellis was HERE! Ellis was just upstairs! He could try to come over as much as he was welcomed without fear of traveling alone at night! They could even spend the night with one another, just like before!

"Did you run down the stairs?" He murmured against his shoulder, a hint of laughter lacing his words in a rather uncommon manner. "If you broke one, you know the land lady would make you fix it... But you're here! I just...."

Words were lost on him for a bit as he continued to hold on tight to Ellis, embarrassment and guilt the last thing on his mind. How could he be anything but happy with his dear friend so close!

In a flash, Shiloh had whipped the door open and gathered him into a hug so tight that Ellis felt another, gasping laugh escape his heaving lungs. Even if he couldn’t breath, this was perfect, like the daytime dramas he sometimes watched with his mum when she was lonely.

“I did,” his words with mirth given form as he wound his arms around the other, adorably happy ginger. Shiloh wasn’t often unaware enough of his anxiety to initiate physical contact but here, with the sudden surprise, he seemed as caught up as Ellis did himself. He used the grip to rock slowly from one foot to the other, making the pair of them seem like waddling penguins, tramping around on Shiloh’s welcome mat.

“Ah, screw it if I did. I’ll just make K fix it.” The laugh he emitted then was weaker, but only because he knew, really, that there was no making K do anything he didn’t actually want to do.

Both of his arms unwound from Shiloh’s warm body so that he could brace his hands on the other boy’s shoulder, staring down into his eyes with all of his pleasure plastered across his tan, youthful face. Really, what were the odds that Shiloh had lived so close without either of them noticing? Well, apart from the fact that they both seemed to be trying to work themselves to death..

“I’m sorry, I rushed down here without even asking - are you ready? Do you still need to uhm,” he glanced over Shiloh quickly, then past him into the apartment that his friend had claimed for his own, “get stuff together? Can I do something?”

When Ellis' arms wrapped around him in turn, Shiloh just beamed, entirely content with what had happened and what they had discovered. Who knew? From the little rocking dance they did to the mention of the steps breaking again all just all felt so happy and light that Shiloh lost himself in it, falling into a fit a giggles that seemed to be endless.

The arm left him far too soon but found themselves about his shoulders with their owner smiling down at him with a gaze that worked a blush right across Shiloh's cheeks. He didn't feel any less happy, however, and just smiled back in his ever so shy manner. He stood up a little taller and pressed their foreheads together in an affectionate manner before relaxing back on his heels.

"Oh, no no no, It's fine! I've been ready for a while, and was just waiting to come by!" He pulled away just a bit, regretfully and looked about his living room. Quickly stepping inside, he grabbed his crafting bag, his small bottle of water, and fixed the chair that had met it's doom when Ellis had come. After that, well, he was good to go. Except for maybe one thing... And he asked with a soft voice as he headed back to where his dear friend stood.

"But... Uh... Um... If you're here... Then does that me we can stop and see the wonderful little Poe before we head out? I think I would really, truly love that."

Ellis found that his anxieties and worries were diminished a little in Shiloh’s presence - having someone that worried more made him feel steadier, even if it was just because he felt that overwhelming urge to stave off anyone else’s fears. Especially a someone that really mattered to him.

He just laughed gently under his breath as Shiloh pressed their foreheads together, leaning into the smaller figure so that he could use Ellis’ weight to balance him on his tippy-toes. It was an affectionate, familiar gesture that he might’ve questioned from anyone else but Shiloh? No. Comfort was the cure for the anxious soul and they had always shared that need. It was a relief at times, especially when he knew Pie was more likely to rebuke him when he was in a foul mood (which, honestly, was pretty often). That was a complex, tangled web compared to the simplicity of Shiloh’s easy friendship.

“Oh, okay,” he mumbled through a laugh, shoving both of his hands in his pockets while Shiloh stepped back into his apartment and busied himself getting the things he wanted. His shoulders shrugged and he rocked easily from toe to heel in a nervous, fidgeting gesture as he waited. Ellis was full of such tendencies even when he wasn’t worried about a thing.

“Really?” The laugh was louder this time, almost disbelieving, but he was already heading for the stairs he had just bounded down. Poe was one of the most perfect joys in his life and it seemed to thrill him to no end anytime someone else wanted to shower the fluffball with love. At least by now most of his panting breaths had abated but he had absolutely no intention of taking the flight with as much gusto as he had before - there was no need, not with Shiloh securely beside him.

“Just make sure you lock it first,” he reminded from the bottom of the stairs, “I don’t think everyone here is as nice as you.”

"Really! I haven't even met him and I love Poe already." Maybe the only other time Shiloh had felt so light and airy was when he DID manage to find Ellis again after all that time. But now, it was just complete contentment because there was no nervousness there, no fear or anxiety that laced his actions and his words. He was utterly and extremely elated and did, in fact, find himself forgetting to lock his door after he hurried after Ellis who had already started up the stairs again.

Shiloh didn't panic about it though, or apologize once or twice or a thousand and one times, no. He simply took it as it was and turned on his heel to lock the door before quickly gaining up on Ellis' heels. For a brief moment, he wanted to take Ellis' hand, to grip it gently in his own and reestablish that connection they had at the doorway, but decided against it. It was a dangerous thing to do, climbing up stairs, and there was plenty of time later for them to enjoy that contact again.

Soon, he was beside Ellis, eagerly awaiting the introduction to the cutest little thing on this earth.

"Do you think he'll like me?" Shiloh murmured, both a little serious and in a tiny joking manner. Sure, maybe with people he would often feel anxious and scared to meet them, but bunnies? No, not at all, they were sweet and small and fluffy and Shiloh found himself wanting one too. "Maybe if he likes me, I should get a bunny too. A small fluffy floppy eared bunny to be his friend. Hehe... A male one though, we don't need this place teeming with bunnies, do we? Even if that would be super cute.... No, we only need Poe!"
