Inspiration was in short supply nowadays.

It seemed he had exhausted the universe's supply, either that, or he'd reached his quota for receiving super natural aid while pondering the night sky. In recent weeks he simply hadn't come across anything profound... And to see both he and his brothers were bored was an understatement. For some inexplicable reason, not a single soul had stirred and by the gods had they watched for it. It was as if the phantoms had ceased their activities, or fled deep into the shadows as soon as they heard that they were being hunted.

...But he knew this wasn't the case.

They'd had several skirmishes with them, one after the other and at no point had they backed down. There had been considerable casualties on both sides, and to assume that they had now retreated seemed entirely unreasonable. No, there was something that he was missing, something significant that he couldn't quite put his paw on. Eventually it would come to him, but for the time being he had to concede that his allies were growing restless and the wild goose chase helped no one.

it was for this reason that he now found himself alone, away from his forward camps, and staring idly out in to the marshlands. He was past the point of wishing that ideas or leads would come to him, he just needed a moment to gather his thoughts and to consider his options. There was a part of him that strongly believed it might be advantageous to return home until they received more leads, but the other side of him realised that by the time they reached that lead...they would be gone.

His eyes flicked towards the soft glow of the fireflies as they flitted to and fro on the horizon. Another quiet night was to be had...or so he thought...

Silence was golden.

It had been this way for a considerable amount of time; just him and the lights. It had brought a measure of comfort to the lion who had run for so long that he was nothing but skin and bone. Haggard and aged, he was a shadow of his former self... The light had long departed from his eyes and yet, he somehow managed to continue on. Those who saw him under the light of the moon no longer sought to cross his path, providing him with a wide berth as he made his way towards whatever it was he seemed to be seeking.

Few realised that the lion sought nothing material, all he desired was to escape.

His mind's eye hadn't plagued him for some time now, lulling him into a false sense of security that he was simply too paranoid to trust. Eventually they would come for him, he didn't know when, but as they had always done they would enter his shadows once more and he would find himself gazing into the abyss. So while others might have assumed they could rest and recuperate, it was safe to say that this lion would rather not take the chance.

...With only his fireflies for company, the almost ethereal (but gaunt) lion continued his way along the river's edge. Dull eyes lowered and breaths quiet as he marched onwards. To him, Tethys was nothing more than another passing observer, one that would perhaps acknowledge his presence through a stare, but would refrain from pursuing him.

After all, he'd disturbed more than enough of them with his ominous warnings; there was something about skinning your loved ones alive that really didn't make for a good conversation starter...

Tethys had heard a lot of stories growing up, even more so as he traveled with his band. The Stormborn had a large number of myths and legends, and many he had chosen not to believe is only because he could potentially explain them via the meddling of a deity. However, on this occasion he wasn't entirely sure what he was looking at - as he had continued to watch the fireflies, they had soon parted much like the red sea and the peculiar lion had walked through.

...If he could even be called a lion.

Quite frankly, Tethys was inclined to say that he was watching a walking corpse; alternatively, he was witnessing the haunting of the water's edge as a ghost made its presence known. Strange, but no one had given any indication that anything supernatural existed here... Yet here he was, eyes trained on the lion as it swept path without so much as a glance in his direction. It was as if Tethys didn't even exist, or he simply couldn't be seen. Perhaps it was a case of ghosts being unable to see into this realm, even if one such as he could see them...?

With a perplexed expression that he continued to observe the lion as he marched on.

It was only as his initial surprise dissipated that he began to take in everything else that seemed to occur around the strange ghost. Not only did he seem to glow with his own light, but it seemed that the proximity of the fireflies seemed to make him even brighter, or was it the other way round? He wasn't sure, but given his own band had been forced to adopt several different ways in which to fight in the dark, he was beginning to suspect that perhaps his inspiration hadn't dried up.

...He just hadn't been looking hard enough in the first place.

Fireflies.

He was going to have to catch some fireflies; but how was it that the strange ghost managed to attract them; the flowers along the edge perhaps? It was something that needed to be investigated...

Spectre was thankful for small favours...

Once again the observer had elected to leave him be, and though he was certainly acknowledged by the stares, no attempts were made for conversation. The gaze still seared into his back, causing all of his fur to stand on end, yet his heart had yet to race. He was reassured, if the observer had made to move then he was certain that he would have known. After all, Spectre always knew... All it took was for one unintentional thought, one little flicker of inclination, and his entire being would be overwhelmed.

His world would go dark, his muscles would seize, and he would find himself paralysed as every fiber of his body cried out in agony. The world would never see what he saw, they would never hear or feel it, but it would at least confirm his suspicions and once again set him on the path. It was a never-ending pursuit, one that he knew would never end until he expired from old age, or until they found a way to catch him.

Yes; he was grateful for the observer who elected to leave him be so that he might move along undeterred.

...Or at least he would have been grateful.

No sooner had he been reassured that the observer had no foul intentions than it seemed that observer had changed his mind. Tethys was following him, or rather he had slipped in behind and seemed to be trailing him. Did he think he would would go unnoticed?

Spectre always noticed, he always saw...

What could he possibly want?
