"How did you even know they were there...?" he shook his head as he stepped away from the snakes that slumbered beneath his paws. Glassy eyes seemed to peer back at him before they slid shut and he turned to regard the lioness who had finally descended from her perch. He still had to marvel as to how she had managed to get up there in the first place, simply put he didn't know how she had gotten up there, but it was a question for another time.
Pressing his lips into a thin line, he carefully placed distance between himself and the snake pit. He wasn't afraid of them in the grand scheme of things, one on one he could probably take a snake... But she had previously referred to her friends, plural, and that generally meant there was more than one creature hidden in the depths. Now given his track record for being assaulted by unseen foes, it was highly probable that there were more than one or two in there... and it was even more likely they were poisonous too.
"You know what, don't answer that," he said finally and took a breath. "I have a better question," he began and settled himself in the open where he was confident nothing was going to catch him out. He had his wits about him here, even if he apparently needed to learn a quick method for checking under every single bush.
"How many snakes are there here?" he asked at last. "And why are they gathered here, if there's such a large number?" he finished.Words: 267

"All three would be reasonable questions," Suu'marle replied as she came to a halt, fixing her eyes upon the lion who seemed to have recovered from his initial, startled response, to what lay by his paws. It seemed that despite being part of another pride, the lion had still remained influenced by his father. Admittedly, Destati had recently pointed out that his son had matured considerably since joining the pride he had selected...but Suu'marle had been unable to comment given she hadn't met him as a cub.
"I know, because they are my friends and we have resided in this place for a very long time," she elected to answer his first question with a chuckle and shook her head. "We work well together," she continued and gave a small wave of her paw. "They provide me with some rather potent tools, one might say this entire forest is equipped with such things both breathing and otherwise," she paused and pressed her lips together.
"As to how many there are, I couldn't possibly say. Their numbers grow or fall in accordance with whether or not they have business to attend to elsewhere, but it would be safe to assume there are a considerable number -" she shrugged her shoulders and peered behind him towards the pit he had almost stepped into. She knew her companions better than that, they wouldn't have snapped at him immediately, but they would have made sure he was aware they were there to avoid the mistake being repeated.
"Why they are here is also open to debate - some come to assist in the production of our goods, others simply prefer the climate of this jungle to what lies outside," she raised a brow. "You have noticed it can be terribly dry in some regions and a touch cold at night, no?"Words: 305

Tethys's eyebrow shot up before he had even had a chance to fully process what she had said. Subconsciously she had hit several of the buzz words that not just he, but those within his circle, had been looking for. He was fairly certain that his sister and the High Priestess would give an arm and a leg to have this at their disposal. If Suu'marle was implying what he thought she was, then he could very well have stumbled upon what could only be described as a weapons factory. Granted, nothing seemed to give any indication that it was, the place simply looked like a normal jungle and yet what she had said had struck a chord...
"And what goods would those be...?" he asked curiously as he glanced about him.
Sure enough, he still couldn't see anything that would indicate that any form of production occurred here. However, he'd been in enough forests and jungles to know that not everything was as it seemed. Gideon had resided in a lair that had been difficult to see, and it had continued to be difficult to spot even after he had begun to be more aware of his surroundings. For all he knew, the lioness had a similar abode elsewhere...alternatively, it could even be above his head - he turned his gaze upwards at this possibility, though there was nothing up there that confirmed his suspicion.
"I can only see one use for snakes," he pointed out, beyond what Arina might have mentioned to him. "And it certainly isn't benign..."Words: 262 Total Words (Tet): 529

"They can be benign," she waved her paw dismissively and then motioned for him to follow. He was right on one thing, she had a lair hidden nearby and it would certainly be in plain sight, but she wouldn't judge him for his inability to see it. Suffice it to say that the Collective were notorious for such things, whether it be them who was hiding in plain sight and blending into the crowd, or their chosen home, they didn't make a point of being seen. Gideon might be excluded from this given his role as a noble, but the rest of them had managed to keep a very low profile...
"When producing antivenom for their bites, you do need to have the venom that caused the symptoms in the first place," she pointed out and glanced round to ensure he was following. Fortunately he was, thus she deemed it appropriate to continue with his education. She'd let his eyes light up later when he entered her abode and caught sight of more than just a few pots. She'd always been the weapons master within the collective, charged with constructing the necessary tools of war to win.
...To say she had a few toys would be an understatement.
"However we predominantly specialise in tools to assist with some of the more unpleasant aspects of society," she shrugged her shoulders and smiled. "Something that you appear to have need of, if you are sniffing around in our jungles looking for some of the more peculiar resources we make use of," she pointed out.
She could imply that her companions had caught sight of him, even if they hadn't. It was an easier cover to maintain that placing any other lions in the firing line who might inadvertently meet her descriptions and have no idea what the Captain was talking about should they meet him...
It was with that in mind that she swept back the vines, so thick that no light escaped from within, and permitted him to enter the den hidden behind it.
"It would be much more efficient for you to simply explore supplies and completed products, rather than wasting too much time with trial and error<" she concluded as he strode inside...Words: 375 Total Words (Suu): 680
