KD was a great many things, but a carpenter she was not. The kit she’d gotten had an extensive instruction packet showing her step by step how to build the insulated shed that would become her college work space. It was oversized, as far as sheds went, but it was large enough to accommodate shelving for her supplies and plenty of space to work. Even built in windows to let in natural light. Staring at the instructions felt like an effort to understand Greek. The words were lost on her as her talents were usually bent toward other ends.

Times like this it was amazing to have a handy, rugged boyfriend.

It hadn’t taken a lot of buttering up when she asked for his help. She was still kind of glowing from saying the L word for the first time and with him all felt right with the world. He complimented her, everything she was not he was. Like good with a hammer, for example. Growing up on a farm seemed to have its perks.

Her dad was nice enough to lay a concrete foundation for it the week before, letting it cure so she had a stable surface to build on. It was in the corner of the yard, out of the way, but that was fine with her. She tended to like music while she worked. Thinking about it, she started humming a quiet tune while she waited for her Westley, staring blankly at the instruction manual as if it might suddenly make some modicum of sense. At some point she ended up turning the whole thing upside down, playing with the shapes and illustrations in her mind to come other more useful things.

Quote:
Willie came walking into the yard and grinned seeing KD, slowing to the creep with a smile of her face trying to be a quiet as a field mouse and sneaking up behind her. He kneeled right down beside her and whispered noticing the upside down instructions, “you might have better luck with that, the other way around KD.”

He chuckled hoping she wouldn’t be to mad at him for trying to give her a start. He gave her a kiss on the cheek and leaned over to get a look at the directions. He was really glad KD was back and he was also really glad for the unseasonably warm temperatures they were having this February. It was 65 and would be 60-70’s all week, so it was a really good time to get the shed up.

“So, do you have any adjustments to the design?”

Quote:
KD was lost in her own little world as she waited, giving him a good jump reaction for his trouble. She turned around with a wide grin on her face and light in her eyes. She was laughing even as she kissed him hello and yelled at him for the trouble.

“Damnit, Westley, you scared me!”

But she didn’t sound angry, only amused.

She offered up the directions without him even having to ask, turning them the right way up before she handed them over.

“I hope you can make sense of them cause I sure can’t. They’re too...structured.”

She was terribly happy he was there, getting up and dusting off her pants. She was dressed to work, borrowing an apron from her mother just in case things got messy. Honestly, she’d never really built anything large and didn’t know much of what to expect. She was quite confident with him taking the lead, knowing he probably did his share of barn raising, or shed building, or whatever farmers did for storage on their farms.

“No, I think the design is pretty good. There will be some shelving in the back and maybe a small day bed against the wall under one of the windows in case I end up working too late some nights.”

Or days. Or pretty much whenever. She often lost herself in the work but he had to know that by now.

Quote:
Willie gave another chuckle and nodded, “yes I can read them. Not that I really need them … my brothers and I have done this a lot … along with general upkeep. It pretty simple, though I’m surprised to see windows, that’s quite a find. Very modern I suppose.” He grinned at her.

He looked to the directions, giving them a quick once over, mostly looking at measurement more than the actual directions. The base was standard simple enough. “Do you want a light of some sort inside? And maybe a simple sink, my dad could help with that … there are a couple ways to do it … a small tank might be best … would be good for cleaning up brushes, and what not yeah?”

He looked to the concrete foundation and back to KD, “I think we can get the floor done quickly, probably before lunch even maybe frame up a wall of two after! You ready?”

This was like being home, it wasn’t something he got a lot in the city, but it was a nice sort of reprieve from fast paced city living.

Quote:
“Well, not all of can be old fashioned farm boys, Westley.”

She grinned to tease him, liking and choosing the building for the fact that it was a little larger than the normal tool shed and had the benefit of windows. It was like her own little studio apartment out on the back of the property and likely she’d be taking shelter there a lot during her terms. She loved her parents, and they were pretty easy going about her occasionally bad judgement, but they trusted her. Still, she was technically an adult and wanted her own space to work and sort of live in, even if the main house had her bed in it.

“No, there’s a spigot up by the house. If I need water I’ll have it close by. A light would be nice, though, for when I’m working at night or,” she gave him a sidelong glance, “when I have overnight company out here…”

She chuckled, always knowing that she’d have to take it slow with him, but that didn’t mean that teasing was out of bounds. She was human, and had those kinds of urges but she was also willing to give him all the time he wanted to decide that for himself and, when he was ready, she was his.

“To sleep,” she clarified, half serious. “To sleep.”

She looked at the flat concrete slab.

“Just tell me what you want me to do. I am at your command.”

Quote:
“Alright no …,” he started before his cheeks and ears turned red and he looked away sort of wide eyed. Now was not to time for his mind to think … well anyway, he relaxed a bit when she clarified and quickly finished his sentence. “Right … no sink, but definitely a light. A light is simple enough. We can put it to hang right in the middle of the ceiling.”

His face was still red, but he moved over to the wood and looked it over. “We’re just going to get these pieces here and measure and frame up the floor. Once we get that done, I can nail it all together. The we get it on the skids and lay the plywood floor sheets, nail and trim any excess and we will have a floor.”

He motioned to the wood on the ground, “this looked like everything for the floor. Let’s move it all right onto the concrete and start the frame.”

Quote:

KD started to laugh at his reaction but stopped herself, reaching out to take his hand a second to reassure him. Embarrassing him a little was one thing. Pressuring him was another and something she really wanted to avoid. Moving a chunk of blond hair away from his face with a tender brush of her hand, she considered him.

“Hey, no pressure, ok? I mean it. I can wait, if that’s what you want. No problem.”

They hadn’t really talked about this kind of thing before and maybe this was an awkward time to mention it. She had meant it as a bit of a joke at first, anyway. She let the subject drop with that and grinned at him before following his instructions to get everything for the floor and framing onto the concrete slab. She was a hard worker when it came down to something she really wanted or something she found worthwhile. Other things? Not so much with the work. She generally opted to ignore things she found to be a waste of her time.

“You sound so competent.”

He never ceased to find ways to impress her and this was no exception. She laid the two by fours at each wall for the cross framing and let him put those together while she laid out the pieces for the floor. There were plenty of tools at their disposal and she tried to work quickly.

Quote:
Willie chuckled and shook his head. No pressure, huh … that was good, not that he didn't want to, he was just a little unsure at the moment. He smiled and went to work, deciding not to worry about it. It would happen, when it did and not before and that was okay.

Separating everything out was the easy part, he set the two by fours on the concrete and set them in place on the concrete, then he decided to set the framing for the back wall since it didn’t have a window or a door, since their wasn't much to do with the two by fours just yet. The back was the simplest wall to start with, windowed wall would be the most time consuming … he had a lot to make on the wood where they were concerned.

Afterwards he grabbed the nail gun and a hammer and walked over to KD to get the frame all nailed together. He did a quick check over and grinned, “Wanna put a few nails in, or would you rather me do it?”

Quote:
KD was content to be support on the project, putting things together as best she could with what knowledge she had. She didn’t go near the nail gun, knowing her limits and knowing that a projectile launcher of sorts was probably more dangerous than useful in her hands. When he offered it to her, she burst into laughter, waving him back with both hands. It was the worst idea, but he didn’t know any better it seemed.

“You want to trust me with some sort of gun? Are you nuts?”

She shook her head and left him to it as she went into the house to throw together some kind of lunch, surprised they’d already been working a few hours. Things were coming along really well, but it was still surprising. She came out with sandwiches and lemonade, offering him the first ones as she sat in the grass.

“Come take a break.”

She leaned back on her elbows in the soft grass and looked up at the blue sky underneath the oak tree in their backyard. In summer it provided good shade and would overhang the shed to keep it from getting too warm.

“What are you going to DCU to study, anyway?”

Quote:
Willie laughed outright at that and gave her a slight playful nudge shaking his before making sure the wood was flush before starting to nail the frame together. He worked easily enough, looking up briefly when went into the house. He was about to set the frame onto the 2 by 4’s when she came back out with lunch.

He put everything down and made his way over, though he decided to quickly run and wash his hand before sitting down with her to have a break. “I’m going to be continuing my engineering degree. I’ve always been really into technology, how things work and making things better. It annoyed my parents that I took everything apart as a child. Im not sure whether I will become a agricultural engineer or if I look into vehicle, transportation … they are oddly different things, aerospace or applied engineering. I mostly torn between agricultural and vehicle, but the others are still in the running. You never know, right?”

“You're majoring in art, yes? Looking to have your art in gallery around the world one day?”

Quote:
“That’s the plan,” she confirmed, smiling at the thought of it. “I want them to look back on my work someday and say I was ahead of my time.”

She listened to him talk about his major, not really sure what he wanted to do with his life, engineering seemed like a complicated field, but if it made him happy she was willing to support that. KD was a rather big fan of technology herself, addicted to her phone some days. Besides, the advances they’d made with art as a digital medium was pretty incredible, if she looked back even fifty years ago and what they had. She was all for traditional artwork: painting and sculpture and the like but there were some things that had really evolved.

“But even if all I ever do is paint for myself and maybe pick up some commissions here and there I think I’d be happy with that, too.”

And, of course, he was in this future she imagined. Him, and his dogs and maybe horses and whatever else he wanted. Maybe some kids; she hadn’t decided how she felt about that, yet, thinking she was still too young for that kind of thing. She needed to lose her virginity first for it to even be an option, anyway, so there was no sense rushing things. But, maybe, someday.

“Do you think you’ll wanna end up in the country like your family or in the city like mine?”

Quote:
“That sounds like a nice place, hopefully you’ll have a huge exhibit in the museum in Destiny City, you know the one … the really big one, in the middle. We can go there and see your art and everyone will want to meet the artist.”

He could see it now, he was certain it would happen and he hoped he would get help her when and wherever he could. He looked over to her and smiled, “well I think my job will require me to be closer to the city, but I wouldn’t like to live smack in the middle of the city. I want to build my own house … I’m sure my brother’s would help. Buy a piece of land and build a house, a large piece of if I can.”

He laid back on the ground, looking up at the clouds, “need lots of room for Ollie and for family parties … mom, dad, 7 brothers, 7 wives … nieces and nephews … going to need lot of room.” He chuckled and while he hadn’t said it he hoped KD would be there with him for it all.

Quote:
So they were both planning for a future with the other in it. That was a good sign. KD smiled and leaned back, laying her head on his leg as a pillow. The sky was a beautiful shade of blue today and it made her happy.

“I could live with that,” she responded easily. “I’m never gonna have nieces or nephews of my own so being a part of someone else’s large family is my only option.”

And with seven brothers to help she was pretty sure the house would be pretty easy to build. He was lucky with his family, though maybe he didn’t always think so. She liked her privacy and probably wouldn’t all the time herself if she had the chance. But she could see large family holidays, birthdays, and it made her feel warm inside.

“I could see us there together.”

She sat up and kissed his cheek.

“Should we get back to work?”

Quote:
William realized in that moment lying in the grass with KD and thinking about the future, that being in love was a really amazing thing. It was odd to in a way, just in a small conversation to sort of … what was it … start planning a future. They’d been together for a while already though, hadn’t they.

When she sat up and kissed his cheek, he started shaken from his thought, rolling his head and blinking at her clearly still in a bit of a fog. He gave her a somewhat lazy smile and sat up, “yes we got pretty far, lets see how much further we can get before we have to wrap it up for the night.”

He got to his feet, extending a hand to her wanting the help her up. “I was just set the frame and nail it to the two by fours … then I’ll square it up, get the sheets one and you’ll have a floor. After that I think we can get together the back wall easily enough.”

Quote:
When she thought about it, they’d been together a long time. By far her longest relationship and though she was young still, only twenty, she felt in her heart that he was supposed to be part of her future. Any future with him was one worth planning and worth talking about. He seemed to understand her in a way most people didn’t and that was important.

Besides all of that, she really was in love with him.

“I set aside the whole day for this. It seems to me once we get the frame up, everything else should be easier. The tiles for the roof are over there but we can work on that another day. I’d like to have some cuddle time with you when this is all over without immediately falling asleep.”

She grinned and set to work again, letting the sun drift lazily across the sky as they set to work on the walls and flooring. By the time it was getting too dark to see much she stepped back and realized the thing was half built. Another day and it would be finished. It looked like it was supposed to, that was a bonus, and she knew she couldn’t have done any of it with him.

She was tired, felt dusty, but oddly accomplished.

“So...pizza and a movie?”

Quote:
It didn’t surprise them how much had gotten done, he knew the pair of them were very capable. They did get a bit further than he thought they would, but that wasn’t surprising, the worked diligently and tomorrow he was certain it would be finished.

He stepped back giving their work the once over, and starting to cover the wood, just in case. There was no call for rain, but one never knew. He looked to KD when she suggested pizza and a movie and gave her a nod.

“I think pizza and a movie if a great way to end this day. We worked hard and now we should definitely pig out and relax.” He chuckled standing up and putting an arm around her shoulder giving her peck on the temple. “What kind of pizza are you in the mood for?”

Quote:
“Whatever. I’m not picky.”

KD was actually very far from picky when it came to food. He could order anchovies for all she cared and she’d be fine with it. Mostly she just wanted the cuddles that came with laying on the couch watching TV. Her parents were at some real estate convention or something and would be gone most of the weekend. They’d certainly be surprised at the progress she made on her studio.

“You can take a shower first, if you want. I think I have some clothes you’ve managed to leave over here after a while. I’ll order while you do that and hop in after.”

She was one hundred percent certain there had to be some of her clothes over at his apartment by now, too. It tended to happen with couples and that was especially handy today. She picked up a local delivery menu and let him browse it, setting their lunch dishes in the sink to deal with later. Everything felt very relaxed to her at the moment.

“Thank you, by the way, for the help.”

But also for loving her, being the other half of a sometimes crazy whole. It was good, finding a balance, and her time away helped her to appreciate it.

“If you wanted to, I mean, it would be ok if you wanted to spend the night. It would be better than driving home late, right? If you didn’t want to share my bed there’s always the couch. Mom and Dad won’t be home until tomorrow afternoon.”

This time she totally meant to sleep.

Quote:
Willie nodded and took the menu when she handed it to him. He honestly didn’t care what kind of pizza they got, but he asked if she meatlovers pizza, but without the ham, as he always thought that was a bit of overkill when the pizza had pepperoni on it. He blushed slightly when she suggested he take a shower and chuckled slightly. He gave her a big hug, picking her right up off the ground. “Awwwww, but sweaty hugs are just the best.” He was teasing of course, but sweaty hugs were not the best, but they weren’t horrible.

“Oh I bet you have that red hoodie I’m missing … I’ve been looking for it for a while and I could not remember what I did with it.”

He moved to go take a shower and stopped when she thanked of him, “I’m happy to help. It’s good to get to spend time with you after we’ve been apart for so long. I missed you.”

He moved back over to his girlfriend when she suggested he stay the night and hugged her, “I think it would be nice to sleep with you in my arms. Call me a hopeless romantic … I think is the term.” He gave her a quick on the lips before heading to take a shower.

It didn’t take much time at all before he was out and dressed in joggers and a shirt he’d apparently left at some point.

Quote:
“No, wait, Willie, DON’T!”

She laughed as he swept her off her feet, pressing their sweaty bodies together. She giggled, struggling playfully in his embrace. When he finally set her down she acted put out, but couldn’t hide the grin that told him she wasn’t mad at all.

God, she missed him, too. From the depths of her heart she had missed him.

KD smiled at his reassurance and tried not to look too bashful about it. Sleeping together for the first time seemed more intimate, all things considered, than having sex for the first time. The fact that he was such a romantic was welcome, as she liked romance herself. She nuzzled against him, not minding the sweat, and hugged him back. Personally, she loved the feeling of his strong arms around her and wanted to know what it felt like while she slept. With that decided she let him go and ordered their dinner. It came pretty quickly so he could get started while she showered. She came out in her pajamas, no sense in getting re-dressed if he was staying the night. She joined him on the couch when she was ready, leaning against his side as clicked through the channels until she found some suitable rom-com.

She ate pizza and cuddled him and ended up drowsing before the movie was even over.

“We should go to bed.”

She left the pizza box where it was and led him to her bedroom, climbing into her queen sized bed. Motioning for him, KD made room and kissed him goodnight when he came to bed.

“Goodnight, Westley. Sleep sweet, ok?”

She settled against him with her head on his shoulder, her body pressed to his side and her arms wrapped around his big chest. She drooped soon enough, falling to sleep wrapped up in his embrace and slept like a stone.
