It had been so many months since the last time she had spoken to the young senshi of her growing asteroid family. The last time, perhaps, had been a trip to her planet and the crystal flower they’d found there. Seeing the familiar figure now across the empty playground drew a smile onto her face that was equal parts relief and joy. She was okay, and truthfully, Ida had missed her.

The older senshi jumped, touching lightly off the top of the chainlink fence before she dropped inside, landing with a thump of her white boots.

“Elvira!” She called as she waved one slender brown arm above her head, picking up her pace into an easy trot across the basketball court. In mid February now, the night was chill, but clear. Occasional bursts of wind to n** at noses and ears, but not too much for the magic that let them wear what they did. Moonlight reflected off the pavement, picking up the faded lines of paint, and glinted off the wildly curly hair of her young friend. Of all the Koronis she knew were out there, Elvira was probably the one she knew the best. The others seemed content to travel their own paths, but Ida was glad that hers kept crossing with this one.

Arian had mentioned something about Elvira looking for her and she hoped it hadn’t been too stressful an experience. Her disappearance had touched more lives than she had realized and it made her sad for the trouble she had caused the people she cared about.

Elvira had felt Ida before she had seen her, and when her long lost friend called out her name, to be honest, the senshi wasn’t quite sure if it was real, or in her imagination. When the other senshi got closer though, Elvira felt her eyes burn and then fill up with tears.

It really was Ida.

Just being told that she was okay hadn’t been enough at all, not even a little bit at all.

“Idaaaaaaaa!”

The word came out as half a screech, half a sob, and the super senshi ran to hug her friend and mentor, squeezing as tightly as she possibly could, not wanting to ever let her go again. “I knew you weren’t dead. I was right, but the one guy didn’t believe me but I told him that you weren’t and I looked everywhere for you but now you’re here and you’re okay and he told me you were but I don’t know, I didn’t get to see you for myself and now…”

She pulled away a little and looked a mess, tears cascading down her freckled face. “I really, really missed you."

Elvira squeezed her again, burying her face in Ida’s front.

She hadn't quite expected the force of Elvira's reaction to seeing her and she started as the younger girl all but tackled her. Her arms went around her in a natural motion and her face softened. She felt the tight squeeze around her ribs and she returned it with a hug of her own, chuckling softly at her enthusiasm.

"Ah, sweetheart... I'm sorry to worry you." She hummed soothingly. Her fingers smoothed down the wild hair and then threaded through it, gently separating the curls in calming motions. "Its okay. I'm okay. I missed you too, but I'm back now. I would have come and found you sooner if I'd known you were looking for me."

It was a curious thing, that she had talked to a 'guy' about here.

"Who was it you talked to? There weren't many people who knew where I had gone or when I got back... it probably wasn't his fault he didn't know. I'm... really glad you believed in me, though. That means a lot to me." She gave the younger senshi another hug, gently patting the back of her head where it was buried in her chest.

She was getting so tall... all those months apart, she'd gained a bit of height. It was a reminder that things had not waited for her while she'd been gone... eight months had passed, people living their lives. Alkaid had stolen a lot from her and she was still trying to recover.

“His name is Athene.” Elvira finally moved away, wiping at her eyes and just looking up at Ida. “I was…I was handing out posters that I drew trying to find out where you were, you know to see if anyone might know? And I ran into him and he got really upset and ran away, but then he told me that you were back and then we had to go fight this strange stuff and I don’t even know, but there was another me, and that was just strange as anything!”

There had been a lot of other things that happened besides that big fight…there had been more close calls than she would like to admit, but…this wasn’t the time to tell Ida all of that…no, Ida needed happy things, since she was gone for so long…she needed things to make her smile!

“Oh! I started decorating my asteroid for Christmas! I mean, I put up a tree and stuff, just in the one greenhouse…but still! It made it look so cozy…do you wanna go up and see it with me, maybe? I think some Christmas would do you good, even if Christmas is way over!”

Elvira was already pulling out her senshi phone, thinking that this was going to clearly just be the best idea ever, and of course Ida would want to see it. She grinned at the older girl and held out her hand. “I mean…we don’t have to, but I would like to show you! We don’t have to stay long!”

The confusion on Ida's face cleared and she smiled.

"Athene in my team mate, and my friend. We live together. I'm sorry if he made you upset. He's been pretty upset himself while I was gone." She said. It was surprising to find that Athene had gotten upset with the young girl. He was usually such a sweet man... but what had happened seemed to have tested even his gentle nature. Maybe not surprising... losing a friend could do that.

She brightened at the offer, reaching to take her friend's hand and wrapped the smaller fingers warmly in her own.

"Yes! I would love to see what you did. Oh, now I'm excited... I think its wonderful that you decorated for Christmas. Its one of my favorite holidays." She stepped up close, already anticipating the shift. "I'm ready when you are!"

Grinning, Elvira hit the button on her phone, and squeezed Ida’s hand tightly as they were both transported up to the asteroid of Elvira. “Ta-Da! Here we are again!”

They were in the greenhouse, really the only place that the super senshi had been on her asteroid, since it was the warmest place available. “See? Here’s my Christmas tree that I set up!” Dropping the older senshi’s hand, Elvira rushed over and turned the battery pack for the lights on, basking in the soft, warm glow of them. “It’s so pretty…I really do love Christmas!”

She ran over to the poinsettia plant that had given her pendant and frowned. The normally beautiful, healthy looking plant…was drooping.

Elvira hadn’t realized that…crystal plants could…droop?

She knelt beside it, her frown deepening. “This wasn’t like this when I left here last! Do you think It’s dying, Ida? What do I do? It never needed water or anything before…”

Surely Ida would know. Ida clearly knew everything, she was so strong and so smart!

The cold hit her immediately, the change from the slowly warming Destiny City making it readily apparent they weren’t where they had starting. A glance upwards revealed a sky full of unfamiliar stars, and that spoke of being somewhere far different. The shapes of other asteroids glowed in the darkness, just like on Ida, and it’s senshi smiled with joy to be on another of the family of asteroids. It didn’t radiate the warmth she had come to associate with her own, but she fancied she could still feel the welcome from the planet.

Elvira had released her hand to run ahead and Ida followed at a comfortable pace, enjoying the snow around her boots and the clear night before she surrendered it for the inside of a green house. She passed through the glass doors and smiled as she saw the younger girl run to turn on a string of lights that wrapped one of the trees that grew here. It looked bright and cheery, just the way a christmas tree should.

“Its beautiful!” She said as she went to inspect it closer, her fingers reaching out to run her fingers along a branch and the ever green needles. She turned at a worried note to Elvira’s voice when she spoke, and her eyebrows lifted in question as she came to see what was wrong.

The flower that Elvira had shown her before… look distinctly different. Sadder… like it had lost something, or was in the process of losing it.

“That’s… strange, isn’t it? It was fine before?” She had to assume it was… Elvira wouldn’t be so upset otherwise. Was it dying?

It tickled something in Ida’s mind and with reluctance and apprehension, she opened her senses and focused on feeling the energy around them. She felt… Elvira, first and foremost. The planet, maybe? Large and vague in the background. And… there. Dread filled her as she focused on the dark thread, like a hint of a bad taste in her mouth. A feeling of chaos energy, faint and small.

“There’s… something here, do you feel it? We need to find it. It doesn’t feel right.” She said as she crouched down, starting to search for something out of place in the pretty green house.

Something bad? On her asteroid? No…that…that couldn’t be right…had she done something wrong? Maybe when that corrupted senshi had her…maybe something had happened then?

For a moment, Elvira remained where she was, her lip trembling in an overwhelming feeling of fear and worry. “Ida…is it because of me? Did I do something wrong…?”

Her mentor was looking around, looking down…and the ground? What could be wrong with the ground…? Quietly, the senshi looked back at the drooping poinsettia plant, and saw a lump near the bottom. Frowning, she moved a little closer, digging out some of the dirt around the plant to better see.

It looked…sickly, like a spot of rot on the plant, but…like a pimple rather than being flat, and it was larger under the soil. “Ida! I think I might have found something…It…it’s on my plant…I think it’s making it sick or something…” She reached out to touch it, still frowning. Maybe Ida was right…maybe this was the bad thing…

It felt like a bad thing.

"Did you do something wrong?" She returned as she looked about. "I mean, do you remember doing anything? Try not to jump to conclusions, sweet heart... you could miss something really obvious because you're blaming yourself."

Leaving off her searching for a moment, the older senshi leaned to place a hand on Elvira's shoulder, giving her a gentle squeeze. Her fingers gently smoothed down the riotous curls as Elvira began to search and she joined her in looking for the source of the gross feeling they both shared.

When the younger girl seemed to find something, Ida leaned to watch over her shoulder as she dug into the rich soil to find... a familiar looking growth. Ida frowned, her lips tightening. Without a thought, she powered down, digging into the bag she carried as a civ to dig out her knife. She flipped the switchblade open and offered the handle to Elvira.

"Here... maybe you can cut it off. That looks like what I found on my planet... it was draining the life out of everything around it, but it was a lot worse on Ida than this. Maybe we caught yours early and we can get rid of it before it really hurts anything."

“I…I mean…” She didn’t want to talk about it, she didn’t want to worry Ida about anything and…when she was given the knife, she hesitated, looking at the blade and back to the growth that was suffocating her precious plant…she couldn’t just let it happen…

Especially when Ida mentioned that it had drained the life out of everything? That made the senshi gulp in fear, but then she reached out, grabbing the stem of her plant as carefully as she could. Drawing in a breath, she slid the knife carefully between the blight seed and the plant, wiggling it gently.

When it seemed like being gentle wasn’t going to work, she frowned, tongue sticking out of her mouth and dug the blade into the seed, twisting it like she would with a tick in the forest.

Well. There was no doubt that it was effective. When the knife pierced the heart of the…of the whatever, it let out a scream, and so did Elvira, her purple eyes growing wide with fear and concern and confusion.
Why was it screaming? It was a plant! It was a plant pimple and…and it was screaming.

And then it wasn’t. After just a few moments and with a large puff of dark smoke, the screaming was gone, and so was the seed.

Her poinsettia plant seemed to gain back its strength before her eyes and the senshi let out a sigh of relief. “Ida…do you think this happened when the corrupt senshi…almost…uh…” She gulped, looking anywhere but at Ida. “Almost took me to…to join his f-family…? Is that why this happened? Because I almost went…? I didn’t want to…he had some sort of attack…and I just…started walking towards him…and…”

Elvira gulped again, hot tears filling her eyes.

“Ida it was scary…”

Despite herself, Ida jumped when the growth let out a shriek, her dark eyes wide. Thankfully, it didn’t last long and they didn’t need to do anything before it disappeared, leaving the plant to slowly recover. The older senshi sighed in relief and was reaching to take the knife back when a very distressed Elvira began talking about a corrupt.

Startled, and then concerned, Ida closed the knife quickly and put it aside so that she could reach for the younger girl, pulling her into a tight hug as she stroked her hair.

“Oh, sweety, no!” She crooned, gently rocking them both. “No, its not your fault. I had one on my planet too, remember?”

There was no way what had happened had caused this, and while the thought of someone taking away the young girl to forcibly corrupt her brought a sense of panic to Ida, there was also a deep need to comfort and protect. Poor Elvira… she’s so young. Its not fair, making children deal with this war. Its hard enough as an adult.

“Its okay.” Ida said as she petted Elvira’s hair, pressing her cheek to it. “You didn’t do anything wrong. It wasn’t your fault and you were very brave to escape. That couldn’t possibly have caused this… I don’t know where these things are coming from, but I think… they were already here all along.”

It was a thought that had been nagging at her, and it was starting to clarify with this new development.

“I think it… needs energy. Like the Negaverse. It was probably sleeping, and then when we woke up as senshi, our planets came back to life and that got those seeds going again. If they were on my planet and yours, they’re probably on other ones too. Maybe… maybe we should find some of the other Koronis and go check. Just to be safe.”

Elvira leaned into the hug, trying so hard to no cry. She had to be brave in front of Ida of all people…she couldn’t let Ida think that she was weak…and…the things she was saying helped her. Calmed her. Maybe…maybe it wasn’t her fault…and maybe that thing had been here the whole time and she just hadn’t noticed…or maybe it just attached itself to the crystal poinsettia plant…because it could feel the power there…

That did make sense…

Quickly, she wiped the tears out of her eyes and nodded. “…One day, Ida. We should just have a picnic up here or something. I just want to spend time here and not deal with suddenly growing or having freaky chaos pimples on my plants…one day I just want to come up here and hang out with my friend. With you.”

And other Koronis people…not that she even knew any…did she?

Ida always talked of them…but she didn’t think she had met any others…
The senshi gulped and sighed. No, getting jealous was stupid. There was no reason to be feeling this upset. No reason at all.

“Do you know more, Ida? Can you talk to them? I can come help you, I’d like to come help you…I want to meet more of our family.”

Family. Speaking of family. “One day you should come to my brother’s bakery for some cookies too, I think you’d like him, he’s really nice. But he’s gay, so don’t go getting ideas okay?” She waggled a finger and reached out, taking the other senshi’s hand and giving it a squeeze. “I…I think I’m ready to go…if you are…I’ve had enough screaming pimples for the day…”

Ida smile gently and stroked Elvira's hair

"I'd like to have a picnic here, that sounds like a lot of fun." She said softly. "It would be nice to see it just being its own beautiful self."

There was a warmth to the way Elvira called her a friend and she hugged the girl closer, feeling her chest ache just a little for how sweet it was. So few people ever singled her out... made her feel special.

"I know a few." She said when she pulled back. It was nice here in the green house and now different from her own beloved planet. It felt good to be here. "I think its long past time we should get them all together, don't you? I've been meaning to, but it always seemed like there was more going on..."

He's gay, so don't go getting any ideas... The older woman flushed as her eyes widened and a bright laugh escaped her.

"I'll try not to!" She giggled as she wrapped her hand around Elvira's, giving it a squeeze back. "I'm ready to go. Lets get you home and let your planet rest for a while. It probably feels good to have that... parasite gone."

Hopefully. Though it looked like there might be more to worry about than just one or two planets.

Elvira grinned sheepishly and pulled out her senshi phone once more. “I’m sure it feels better without the…parasite?” It was a parasite? Maybe it was. “I think we should get together! That would be super fun, can bring some cookies and we can all be friends and it’ll just be great!”

Carefully, the younger senshi took hold of Ida’s hand and squeezed it tightly, pressing the button on her phone that would take them back to Earth. Back to Destiny City, away from the cold of her world.

But they would be back.

They would always be back.

It was their job, and their duty and their destiny.

Plus it was fun to hang out with friends!
