The whole reason she started to go to these cooking classes was because of Evan's suggestion. She saw him around, hung out when she could with him, picked up cooking advice and made use of his amazing ideas and experience. Not to mention the experience of all the older ladies that were, as he'd warned, happy to grandmother her.

For Cassie, it'd been amazing, and a stress-free thing to look forward to at least once a week, if not a few times, a good change from the pace of school, work, and senshi life.

When Evan vanished, the void was... noticeable. She'd texted, called, asked the older ladies if they'd seen him around. But after a month, the calls, the texts... never went through. No text was ever read, no call ever answered. No one really had an answer. He just... vanished.

But she didn't have his address. She didn't have a place to really... reach out to him, beyond his cell and the classes, and the random meet ups they would have. The more she learned about the war, the more Cassie had begun to worry that Evan was just another... casualty out there. But she never saw anything about a missing person's report on him, at least on the few times she tried to look that sort of thing up.

Maybe he just moved? Something came up?

It wasn't like he owed her an explanation, though Cassie's mind couldn't help but run down a million horrible responses to it all. He'd never ignored her before. Why start now?

But she didn't have proof. Nothing but a horrible feeling in her gut, and a weight on her shoulders each time she went to the classes and noticed the green-eyed boy still wasn't present. She'd work with the ladies, laugh and enjoy herself, but always, she'd keep an eye trained towards the door, hoping... waiting, for him to run in, apologize for being so late, for the no contact.

Not that such a thing happened. The weeks rolled into months, and onward time ticked.

"I'll see you ladies next week--and yes, I'll bring in the family photos," she added with a laugh, before anyone could again accuse her of trying to purposefully forget. The ladies had been wonderful, telling her all about their family histories, from what they knew of them, sharing photos... it was only fair that Cassie should do the same, they said. And she looked forward to it, hoisting her bag over her shoulders, a tin of cookies cooled and frosted after being baked that evening settled in her arms as she headed out the door into the cool night air.

In one pocket, she could feel the weight of her pen, but she didn't plan on using it. She had her card for the bus in her hand, and planned on just... heading home like normal. No senshi stuff. Besides. She didn't want to risk losing the cookies!

But she grumbled as she fumbled a bit with the tin, large and not exactly super confident to carry around. "Why didn't I bring something with handles... or an extra bag..." She paused on the sidewalk, trying to see if she could fit the tin into satchel stuffed with her school supplies and laptop, brow furrowed in concentration and a huff on her lips.

Youma were not uncommon in Destiny City.

Youma that ran full charge at civilians were probably not even that uncommon.

Youma that saw a civilian and came bounding over like an overzealous puppy were probably uncommon, if not rare.

Evan had first spotted Cassie when she was leaving the building, but Sanidine had been keeping his eye on him since he'd tried to bolt away once earlier in the evening. It wasn't that Evan wanted to cause trouble, just that he couldn't control himself. He was driven strongly by instinct, and occasionally by memory.

Evan, the human, was still in there. Somewhere. Even if it was just a small part.

When he recognized Cassie, he'd squirmed and writhed and finally just gave up trying to please Sanidine. Despite the General's protests, he'd bolted away from him at full speed. He'd intended to come to a stop next to her but completely misjudged his speed and momentum; he crashed right into her leg with a surprised chitter.

The youma fell back wards, blinked, rubbed at his head and then looked up at her with large, golden eyes.

Evan was small and humanoid--unrecognizable from his previous appearance, but not as frightening as most youma. He had large ears and black fur that coated him completely. The most impressive of the fur was around his nape, which had settled in a fluffy mane that traveled down his back. His tail was a small stub that was currently wagging, and he was standing on his two legs, reaching up and tugging at her bag as if trying to get her attention.

He was smaller than a human, and if it weren't for his obviously sharp claws and teeth, he would have appeared completely harmless.

He couldn't speak--at least, not in any language anyone could understand--but it didn't stop him from trying. He was making squeaks and chirps and kept eye contact, enthusiastically clinging to her.

But the youma wasn't the least of her problems. A very angry General rounded the corner shortly after and, angry, shouted, "Evan, I swear to God, get back here."

Sanidine looked tired, exasperated, and disheveled. He wasn't sleeping much; he spent too much time trying to balance work, a relationship, the Negaverse, and fixing Evan. He barely gave the civilian a second glance as he stomped towards Evan.

The youma looked at the General and his ears folded low; he knew he was in trouble, but still, he looked up at Cassie and managed to make a puppy dog eyes at her. He looked absolutely pathetic, and absolutely desperate for her attention.

One of the worst things about being aware of the war, but being not in senshi form? You didn't feel the incoming energies that otherwise served as necessary warnings. Occupied as she was with fussing with the tin of cookies and her bag, she missed any warning of the sound of feet against the sidewalk, even the sound of claws against sidewalk if such had occurred. It wasn't until a black blur entered her vision that Cassie yelped and then not even a second later the dark figure rammed into her leg.

She stumbled back, clutching the tin and one of her hands jammed into the pocket with her henshin pen. But she couldn't get the words out. She stared down in alarm at the humanoid creature--small, dark, with wide puppy-like eyes--that wasn't trying to lunge for her throat or her starseed. His claws tugged at her bag, and she could only stare in bewilderment as it... as it just chattered.

It wasn't attacking her. It kept looking up at her, tiny tail wagging and looking, for all she could figure, happy. Was this... not a youma, but some other random creature? If Caedus came from space, and there were other creatures that popped up now an then from beyond Earth's atmosphere, maybe this was one..? She couldn't feel it's energy since she wasn't Cassiopeia but--

"Oh ********> she squeaked, when someone in a uniform rounded the corner. He didn't look like a senshi, didn't bare any of the marks of a knight. Her pulse sped up, and she would have tried to bolt... had she not heard what he'd said. Her heart thudded, sputtered, and picked back up. Evan?

That was... a convent time for that name to pop up...

She looked down at the chittering creature, staring at the fact it looked like it was responding to the name... and then looking back up at her like that. Did it... did it want help..? If this was a Negaverse agent, was he hurting the creature?

Shifting her stuff, she held the cookie tin in one arm, while the other hand came to tentatively rest on the creature's furry head. Her body moved, trying to usher it behind her as she glared up at the man in the uniform. "You realize taking that tone, you're frightening it, right?" This was stupid and she knew it. But if it wasn't a youma... but what if it was? What if this was just some ploy to kill her?

But why bother with a ploy?

"Why did you call it Evan? That's a... pretty mundane name for a not so mundane creature." Look if she was going to die, she was going to die saying she was at least brave.

Though she wondered what her chances of survival might be if she henshined up...

The General shot the girl a look but he didn't seem entirely interested in harming her. "Good, he ought to be frightened," the man muttered. "Better he be afraid than run over. Evan, get off of her."

Evan gave an exasperated sigh and seemed to collapse against her leg; he remained on his tiptoes and just slumped against her for support, burying his face into her leg. He muttered a few tired chirps and then flopped into a seated position.

His ears folded low and it seemed like he was pouting, not unlike a small child.

Sanidine crossed his arms and stood up tall.

"Come. Here."

Evan reluctantly relented and gave Cassie one last look before he started crawling along the sidewalk, dragging himself as slowly as possible.

Sanidine was not impressed.

"If I'd named him, I might have named him something a bit more fitting. Right now, I'm thinking brat is appropriate. But, no. He came with that name. And if he wants to keep it, he needs to stop acting out. Jesus, Evan."

The General had enough and marched over, picking Evan up by the scruff of his neck. "It's no wonder you're stuck like this, you're not taking this seriously at all. Who is she--do you know her?"

The youma looked like it was pouting but his ears perked up at the last quest and his tail wagged; even as Sanidine held him he looked at her with excited eyes.
