Pippa and her best friend Beatriz had met at the Orchard, and together had managed to bring the abandoned farmland back to blooming. Through working so closely together, day in and day out, in all kinds of weather, they had grown close. They shared so many common interests, so many passions, so many dreams.
One of them was the desire to raise a child. When it came up, they found themselves with the same yearnings, and the same fears of raising a child alone. Would she have the skill to rear a child well? Would life on the Orchard be sufficient for a child, or would it be too isolated and lonely?
As they talked it through, the solution bloomed as naturally as Pippa's prized apple trees: they ought to make this commitment together. What could be better? Each woman would be able to help the other, their children would be the same age and could grow up together--loneliness solved!
Once the seed had been planted in Pippa's mind, it flourished. She mailed out for applications--two copies, one for her and one for Beatriz. When the parcel arrived, with it was a brochure for a 'mixer'. Now, that was an interesting idea! Instead of a mysterious half-imbued stone that might have whomever's intentions and genetics involved...this would give them a chance to meet the very people who would help them to bring their children to life.
"What about it, Beatriz?" Pippa asked, after she'd shown her partner the pamphlet. "Want to attend this mixer and see who looks like a good match?"
