Valentine's Day was for children in grade school, who gave cards and candy to everyone in the class, or for people with significant others. Corrupted Sailor Hydra was in neither category but still, for some reason, had spend too much time crafting treats she could give to the people that she thought were important to her.

They were sugar cookies that were in the mixed shape of whales and hearts, carefully iced and bagged with a set of ribbons she had painstakingly threaded tags through and curled the ends. Most of them had been distributed by now by various means, either being left outside someone's door, dropped off at the hospital, or in person, except for one.

For some stupid reason, Hydra had found herself making a little bag for a certain white moon senshi who had been awfully kind to her when so many others had been horrible. His name was printed carefully in block letters along the red and pink tag. Oberon, it said and she clutched it tightly in a gloved hand as she set about looking for him.

Since she had run into him in the general vicinity of the library and the boy had mentioned that he spent a lot of time doing research, she figured it would be the best area to start.

"Ugh, I feel so stupid," she grumbled to herself, trying to keep the flush from staining her cheeks as jade eyes looked around for anything that looked like the senshi of adventure.

There were plenty of reasons Oberon definitely did not want to be home on Valentine’s Day. One, he wasn’t sure how his brother was going to mess things up with his fiance, or maybe it would turn out great, which meant it would be even worse for Oberon to stick around.

He also didn’t want to stay home because there was nothing for him to do. He didn’t have a girlfriend, or anyone who was even close enough to being a girlfriend. Haven obviously placed her ice skating before any thought of boys, which meant he was indefinitely friend zoned, despite knowing her since they were two. There were a couple of cute girls around, but since he went to an all boys school, there was no handing out Valentines. At least not him.

Powering up was clearly the best option, and searching for youma seemed to be the only good idea he had for the night. But even that didn’t result in much.

He’d already powered back down by the time he’d made his way towards the library, having given up for the night and needing to get back to where he’d left his bike. Sneaking around as a civilian was getting easier and easier, but that also meant he needed to be more careful. And when he turned the corner to cut through an alley, he almost had a heart attack, having not noticed anyone else until he heard her speak.

Hydra?? Peter clamped his hand over his mouth as he very quietly backed up and out of the alley before she saw him. He knew she wasn’t horrible, not like a lot of the others, but he also didn’t want to see what she would do to a random civilian. He either had the choice of turning back and running, or maybe talking to her. And since he didn’t have anything better to do, he drew in a deep breath and quietly mumbled the words to power back up.

He knew she’d be able to feel him before she saw him, so he quickly held up his hands as he stepped back into the alley, flashing her an awkward smile. “Hey,” he said lamely in greeting, hoping this was not a bad time for her. “Guess that maybe ended up being a yes, huh?”

She felt completely and absolutely ridiculous for going out, on Valentine's Day, looking for some dumb boy who was probably busy doing something else. Like flirting with other girls. Yeah, she was so stupid for deciding that he was worth -

A bright aura flashed in her senses and panic flooded her immediately.

No, no! She had been careless, too preoccupied looking for Oberon to pay enough attention to her surroundings. "Crap," she hissed, clutching the bag of cookies pressed against her chest as she spun around, long turquoise hair whipping around with strands sticking to her face and catching on her lips. "I'm warning --!" Green eyes went wide, heart aflutter in her chest when she realized that the person who'd snuck up on her was the person she'd been looking for.

"You jerk!" She gasped, shooting a glare his way. "Why'd you have to go and scare me? Jeez." A gloved hand was pressed against her chest, finger tips pressing against the skin around the crack in her chest. "But...I guess that's fine. Since I was looking for you."

“Woah, hey, it’s just me,” he clarified, keeping his hands up, although he lifted them a bit higher to shield his face in case she was going to attack him. “Sorry, sorry! I didn’t mean to scare you. It’s sometimes easier to observe youma unpowered,” he admitted, although he knew it was probably dangerous to do so. “The senshi aura is stronger and more desirable to them than just normal civilians, so…” And now she knew he wandered around as a civilian, but that was fine because he was careful.

He blinked curiously at her when she told him she’d been looking for him, completely dumbfounded as to why. “Oh,” he said, at a loss for words. “Really?” Wow, that was lame, obviously really, otherwise she wouldn’t have said anything.

Of course, there was also something that caught his attention, and he wondered if it would be wrong of him to mention it, but he was curious and figured it wouldn’t hurt to try.

“Does that hurt?” he asked, lowering his hands but keeping one up to gesture to his chest where the hole in hers was. “It looks painful.”

Feeling her cheeks heat up, more so than before, Hydra dropped her gaze, lip caught between her teeth and she worried down on it in embarrassment. "S'fine," she grumbled, struggling to convince herself to look up because her heart was doing that stupid thing it did whenever she was around Obsidian, too fast a flutter and a pulse that was difficult to hear over. His explanation was what had her looking up, the slightest flicker of concern flashing across her face. "Yeah, but you're more likely to get hurt." Or compromised, which was probably worse but she wasn't going to say that.

Taking a deep breath, Hydra rolled her shoulders back and made herself relax. This was fine, Oberon was fine. They were just going to talk, that was it. Go with the floor, she told herself when she took a step toward's the boy.

"No, I said just cause." Her voice was flat and she looked annoyed, for all of two seconds before a smile was teasing her lips and she looked genuinely happy to see him, until he drew attention to the crack in her chest. Immediately she was recoiling, putting distance between them, and her hand was covering the exposed expanse of her chest. "It's fine," she snapped.

Half turning away she grumbled, "this was a mistake. I don't know why I thought this was a good idea."

"I’m careful, I promise," he said quietly in reassurance as he watched Hydra and the way she tensed and her cheeks turned red and she didn’t seem to want to look at him and grumbled out her answers, or didn’t have any emotion at all. Oberon stared at her in concerned confusion, because she was acting different from the last time they’d crossed paths. Had something happened? She seemed more energetic last time. This time she seemed embarrassed. Was it because something happened? Maybe he did something to upset her? Was it a girl thing?

Of course, he had to go and say something that upset her even more, and Oberon practically sputtered in surprise at her reaction. He knew it was probably a touchy subject, but he was honestly curious. It wasn’t every day he got to talk to a senshi of the negaverse.

"Hydra, wait," he tried to coax her back, taking a cautious step towards her, but to the side so that she could see his movements, not wanting to make her think he was trying to sneak up on her. "I’m sorry. Obviously it’s something you don’t want to talk about, and it was wrong of me to ask," he quickly tried to apologize. He knew he was sometimes accused of being cold because he said thing that were unintentionally offensive or mean, but he really hadn’t meant to upset her. He would have come up with all kinds of creative things to say if he’d meant to upset her.

"I’m glad I got to see you again. I was worried something might have happened to you," he admitted, wondering if that was something weird to say. "I’m sure you’re exposed to just as much danger as I am, so. Yeah, I’m glad you’re okay."

She was regretting the whole thing, the crinkle of the cellophane she'd wrapped the cookies in audible when she clenched her fist and tried to keep a hold of her resolve to leave. Cursing her nativity, her stupidity, and the stupid desire to see and to spend time with Oberon that threatened overwhelm her, she tried to keep walking.

But his tone had her halting in her heels, skin warm and the butterflies in her belly making her feel lightheaded.

You should go, she told herself, even as she seemed to remain planted, locked into place. Oberon was apologizing...admitting that he was happy to see her -

She was happy to see him too, wasn't she?

Exhaling she glanced at him from the corner of her eye, not quite forgiving but not so quick to leave...for now. "There is nothing wrong with it." A pause when she turned to give him a sharp look. "Or me." Hydra refused to believe anything anyone had said to her about how her existence was wrong and perverted. She was breathing, she had a pulse, and she was living. "Why do you even care?"

Hydra needed to know, because it didn't make sense.

She stopped. That was a good sign, right? She wasn’t completely fed up with him if she stopped and didn’t run off, right??

Oberon let out a small breath of relief, although the glance at him from the corner of her eye had him tensing up again, feeling like he was being scrutinized and expected to say something wrong or something offensive. Well, that wasn’t good.

He stared at her when she told him there was nothing wrong with it, or with her, and it took a moment for him to realize she was talking about his previous comment about the holes in her chest. Was she self conscious about it?

Why do you even care?

“Why wouldn’t I?” he responded without really thinking, and then realized he probably should have put a little more thought into what he was saying. She was asking him seriously, and he acknowledged that, but he also didn’t think his answer needed much thought because it would have been the same no matter how long he waited to say it.

“Just curious,” he added quietly with a small, awkward shrug, feeling a little out of sorts because he had no idea what she wanted him to say. “I just didn’t know if you’re in pain. That’d suck if you were, that’s all,” he tried to explain himself, although he kept her distance. It wasn’t anything earth shaking. There was no hidden meaning to him asking about the holes. He hadn’t had the chance to talk to many negaverse senshi before, so he didn’t realize it was taboo to mention.

The longer Hydra looked at him, the more she was torn between the flighty desire that had her shifting her weight onto one leg and the impulse to step closer. No one in the Negaverse had been mean to her, but outside of her cats...and Obsidian, before, no one had been nice really. Obereon had been and he'd called her cute and was worried about her -

"I don't get you," she said with more bite than she wanted. Looking at him from the side wasn't comfortable and she turned slowly until she was facing him completely, treat bag held limply in her fingers. "I wasn't - ugh." Hydra was huffing because of course she would be talking about one thing and have him thinking she was talking about something else.

"No. I don't get why you care. About me." Not many people did, no matter how hard she tried or what she could help with. "You think I'm wrong," she gestured her all of herself. "Bad? Misguided, I don't know." Obsidian made her feel special though and the boy across from her just made her feel confused. "I don't get it," she said, quietly this time.

He stared at Hydra in confusion, not entirely sure what there wasn’t to get about him. He wasn’t lying to her. He wasn’t making stuff up. He didn’t understand what she didn’t get about him. She, on the other hand, was entirely confusing, and he held his hands up in a form of surrender when she let out a noise of frustration.

Part of him wanted to ask her if he wasn’t allowed to care, of perhaps there was a rule against someone on one side caring about what happened to someone on the other side. He could see that she was already on edge. She was already assuming he thought about her a certain way when he had no reason to, at least not yet.

Slowly, he lowered his hands, although one reached up to rub at the back of his neck, feeling awkward and out of place.

Because,” he said quietly, not really knowing how to explain himself when she already didn’t think it was possible for him to care. “You thought it was neat that I like youma, and you didn’t attack me even though you could have, and you still could, I know. And I would like to learn more about you because I think you’re interesting and pretty and you joked with me about Harry Potter and you talked to me about starseeds when I asked if you maybe knew how to fix them. And you have a cool sphere of magic. And you said you guessed I was kinda cute, so… yeah, I care about you because of all that, and I don’t want you hurt more than you already have been.”

And it seemed as though she had been hurt in more ways than just physically, if her comment about how he thought she was wrong or bad said anything. Misguided, she’d said, whatever that meant. They were all people, regardless of whether they were in the Negaverse or not.

“Whoever said that to you was a jerk, about you being wrong, or bad, or whatever, and they obviously don’t know you. I mean, I don’t know you very well, but I’d like to get to know you. You’re funny and…” he stopped himself, shaking his head because he was sure he was just making things worse.

“Sorry… I shouldn’t have startled you like I did. I should have walked away when I saw you. I didn’t mean to upset you.”

All she could do was watch him warily while she tried to convince herself that this was all some kind of joke. People only seemed to care about her when they wanted something from her and she could not, for the life of her, figure out what Oberon would want from her.

Hydra wanted so badly to throw the cookies at him and run off because the more he looked at her, the more self conscious she felt. Her feet shifted just slightly, the desire to flee making her heart clatter against her ribs but the way he looked kept her rooted in place. He looked confused and embarassed and -

She thought he wanted her to stay. (But maybe she just wanted an excuse to stay.)

So the corrupt stayed and listened, using the cookies as a shield to hide the crack in her chest. The one that didn't hurt, but seemed to scar and brand her anyway.

Hydra couldn't hide the flush of her cheeks when he told her that he wanted to get to know her better, when he said that she was interesting and pretty and all sorts of other things. "I don't - " her voice shook and she stepped forward, feeling a swirling rush of emotions she couldn't pick out or control. People didn't want to get to know someone if they didn't care, on some level right?

Oberon had basically said he wanted more reasons to care about her and she knew that some part of her wanted him to. She was ashamed for it, but it didn't stop her.

"No I - " She swallowed, trying to hide how flustered everything made her. "I want you to get to know me but..." It's a bad idea. Yet, she wanted it anyway. "I was looking for you. I - I wanted to see you and I just - I don't know. People have been so awful but you've been nice and I don't - I was so happy to see you." Until he pointed out what everyone else did. "You're different and it...It's scary."

“You were looking for me?” Oberon asked, his eyes widening in surprise, which was saying something because he was very rarely surprised. He was a scientist, after all; things didn’t often surprise him. The fact that she was looking for him was, well, he didn’t think many people take the time to actually look for him. Usually they waved him off as a kid and went on their way.

“People tend to be awful when they don’t understand things, don’t they?” he said with a grimace, not liking it but knowing it was unfortunately the truth. He was guilty of being ignorant on occasion. He didn’t like it, but he was also only human.

“I don’t think I’m that different,” he said with a small shake of his head. “I mean, once I was turned into a cat and that was weird, but I think there were a bunch of others who got turned into cats, too. So I’m not unique with that, at least. Yes, furballs are awful,” he said, trying to make something of a joke even though his voice was still pretty dead pan, so it sounded almost like he was being entirely serious, aside from the fact that it was a ridiculous topic.

He could see the bag of cookies in her hand, but he refrained from bringing attention to them, not wanting her to think he was paying too close attention to the hole in her chest or her forehead. He was also afraid of what she would say if he mentioned that he thought they were kind of cool, as long as they weren’t painful. They looked interesting, even though he was sure it was a horrible process to have a starseed corrupted.

But she’d said she wanted to see him again, and he had no idea how to respond to that, because he’d also wanted to see her again. And now she was flustered and on edge and he worried that he would just say something to make her more upset.

“I don’t have a problem with you,” he said as he shuffled his feet a little, wanting to say something, but still wary about it. “Have I said anything that made it seem like I don’t think you’re cool? Because if I did, I didn’t mean it.”

Undeniably, she was embarrassed and was trying to hide it behind a strong and stubborn exterior. It wasn't working as well as she would have liked because everything that Oberon was saying made her heart flutter. She tried to ignore it, she was being stupid, so stupid for even standing across from him. For giving him a chance. For, perhaps the worst offense, potentially liking him.

That would do her no good, she knew, yet here she was looking at him and wanting to forgive everything and just -

Hydra shook her head, long strands of turquoise hair falling across her shoulder, skirting the ground from it's sheer length. "I told you I was," she said in a quiet voice. She had been looking for him for something so silly but she had found him - that counted for something right? "You'd be a funny looking cat," she told him while giving him a once over.

Before she realized it, she had inched a little closer, chewing on her bottom lip because she had no idea what she wanted to what she expected from him. But wasn't that the thing about youth, that you did dumb and reckless things without thinking them through?

Hydra had always been adaptable, but she was hardly reckless and rarely took chances that she didn't think were favorable. Maybe it was okay that she was doing something foolish.

"I..." There was a long pause as she tried to study his face. He seemed genuine. "I believe you." If he said he liked her, that he didn't have issues, then she was going to believe him. "I was looking for you because, I wanted to..." She flushed again, stepping into his space and shoving the bag against his chest. "I made cookies for people and I made some for you too..."

He waited patiently as Hydra tried to figure out what to say or do, and he sincerely hoped it wouldn’t result in her using her magic on him. He definitely was not prepared for a tsunami. But soon she as moving closer to him, almost shyly, looking at him strangely. What exactly was she trying to figure out about him? Maybe it had to do with the fact that he was White Moon and she wasn’t. Not that it ever really mattered to him, but he knew it mattered to a lot.

Oberon quickly lifted his hands up to catch the bag that was shoved against his chest, staring at Hydra, and then down at the bag of cookies, his eyes wide in surprise. She made him cookies? For Valentines?

And now he was going to try and ignore the fact that his face was probably completely and hopelessly turning red, flustered and unsure of what he should do now.

"Thank you," he said, clearing his throat after the words came out a little too breathlessly. "You – I mean – that was…" he paused because he was not making much sense and he knew it. He cleared his throat again and lifted one of his hands to rub awkwardly at the back of his neck, glancing away from her for a few moments as he regained his composure, and then looked back to her.

"Thank you, Hydra," he said, wanting her to know he was appreciative of it. He showed her a small smile as he took hold of the bag and started to pull it open. "Would you like to share them with me? Or are you cookied out?"

It was easy to focus on any part of Oberon that wasn't his face because he was so much taller than her. Her face felt hot and she knew she was blushing fiercely, mad at her pale skin for giving away her nerves and embarrassment too easily. Jade eyes were fixed on his hands, which her fingertips brushed when she drew them away, opting to play with the hem of her skirt because she didn't want to think about how his hand might feel in hers.

The way he sounded had her head jerking up in surprise, green eyes wide and mouth parted in the beginning of a startled gasp that got stuck in her throat. Seeing him also flushed and flustered sent her heart skittering in an unfamiliar way and suddenly, Hydra was terribly aware of how close she was to him and how easy it would be to stretch up on her toes -

She shook her head to push the thought away, smile spreading across her mouth as she looked up at him. "I - " she hesitated, thinking bad idea, but her mind was already made up. "I think I'd like that," she admitted, glancing down at the bag then back up at his face.

"But - " She felt like a silly school girl all over again. "Can we sit somewhere?"
