Personality: Xander has a short temper and often forgets to mind his tongue. He can be rude, brash and crass in nature. He builds up a metaphorical wall around himself to protect himself from others. Xander has become very distant and withdrawn, though it might not be noticed at first. He does not really avoid conversation, but he rarely speaks of anything genuinely important to him and he is liable to become angry and dismissive when pressed for personal details. But despite these flaws, Xander is dedicated and loyal to the people around him. He is not quick to call someone a friend, but his actions show him to be more caring and friendly than he seems on the surface. He is easily embarrassed and easily irritated by becoming embarrassed. In many ways his attitude and behavior make him seem even younger than he is.

Bio: Xander was born to Richard and Sarah James, a baiter and his wife. Richard was obsessed with fighting back the A.I. Core menace; he devoted most of his time and energy to growing stronger and fighting harder. He believed that it was the duty of every human to fight back in some way and that taking up arms was the single most important thing any one person could do. Xander had been indoctrinated with this belief ever since he was very young and took to it whole heartedly. However, it caused some strife between his parents. Sarah loved her husband, but resented the baiter program. She believed that humans were once again meddling with things that they did not understand, just as she believed that doing so was the cause of the initial spread of A.I. Cores. She wanted no part of the program and she felt residual anger at her husband for volunteering for a procedure that had a 65% chance of taking him away from his wife and children. The two tried to keep Xander from hearing their disagreements, but the tension grew more and more until it was palpable even to the child.

Tragedy struck the small family when Xander was twelve years old. His father had been away from home for two weeks, but the boy was not worried. His father was off on a mission; he would defeat A.I. Cores and grow stronger the way he always did. And when his father finally came home, for a while everything would be perfect. His mother would be so happy to see his father come back alive, that she would forget how angry she was for a couple of days. She wouldn’t complain so much about having to raise him and his three year old sister by herself anymore. And his father would tell him about the latest A.I. Cores he had fought, defeated, and maybe even incorporated into his arsenal. Xander loved those stories; he could listen to them for hours! Maybe, if he had been very good and mother went to bed early, his father would even summon one of his A.I. Cores. It wasn’t something the man did often when not in combat, so it was always something of a treat. Xander was so excited for the possibilities that he practically bounded toward the door when the bell rang, certain that his father was home at last.

Instead, Xander opened the door on a uniformed official who asked to speak to his mother. The child was confused; who were these people and why were they at his home? Xander called to his mother who immediately looked somehow deflated when she saw the uniformed woman. She quickly moved to Xander and tried to usher him away, but the stubborn boy refused to move. He could feel the tension and there was a sinking feeling in his gut; he knew he did not want to leave from the spot where he stood until he had heard what the stranger had to say for himself. But nothing could have prepared him for the news that his father had died trying to bind an A.I. core that was too powerful for him. Feeling like he was punched in the gut, Xander first crumpled into his sobbing mother’s arms, shocked and speechless. But he quickly moved into anger, screaming and demanding to know why from the uniformed woman who could not have possibly offered an answer. It took an effort to calm the boy, particularly as his mother seemed too distraught to offer any assistance in the matter.

Life moved on, but not for the remaining James family. Xander wanted to rage against the world and hide away from it at the same time, but he could not do either. Not when his mother had entered a catatonic state not long after hearing of her husband’s death. She no longer even cared for herself, let alone her son or her three year old daughter, Julia. As much as Xander wanted to fall apart and bring down everything around him in the effort, the boy instead stepped up to take responsibility for the family he had left. He looked after his little sister, cleaning and feeding her. His mother he could usually push through the motions of living as long as he set food in front of her, drew a bath when she needed one, and generally just remained diligent and attentive. But as a result, Xander became a truant, eschewing school for grocery shopping and running errands.

This went on for two years with Xander struggling to survive and drag his mother and sister alongside. He became bitter and quick to anger, landing him in trouble as often as not. For a while, he was let off with warnings out of respect for his father, but when the boy’s violence began to escalate into broken bones, his and those of others, law enforcement had had enough. Xander was escorted home by an officer who fully intended to tell his mother than the next time her son was caught out of school and causing trouble, it would land him behind bars. Xander made every excuse he could, but the officer was determined and there was no preventing the man from discovering the truth of Xander’s situation. Once again, Xander’s life would change completely around him and there was nothing that he could do about it.

Xander’s mother was whisked away to a home for the mentally infirm where he was assured that she would receive the care that she needed. Xander insisted angrily that he was providing all the care that she needed, but the adults around him only attempted to mollify him. He and his sister were entered into foster care where Xander turned even more sullen, withdrawn, and volatile. He got into fights with the other children and showed nothing but hostility to potential foster parents. It was only when he was warned that he might be separated from his sister to offer her a better chance at a real home that Xavier calmed and internalized his anger, at least as much as he could. He could never fully swallow it, but it was enough; he and his sister were taken in together. Fortunately for Xander, his foster parents were patient and supportive even in the face of his anger and distant behavior. They were even supportive, albeit surprised, when Xander declared that he wanted to undergo the H.A.L.F. procedure.

Despite everything, Xander still idolized his father. He blamed the A.I. Cores for the death of the man that had been his hero and for his mother’s breakdown as a result. He hated that they had been able to take so much away from him and he wanted to take something back. He wanted that more than anything; it was worth the risk that he would die. His mother did not even seem to know him when he visited her and his sister was in the care of people Xander grudgingly admitted were good and kind to her; he was not needed anywhere else. He had no intention of getting married or having children; there was not a family that needed him any longer. If he died, then he died. But if he lived, then he would be able to really strike back for the first time since his father was taken from him.
