"Alright Shiloh, I'll see you inside, okay?"
"Yes, sir." A final wave was offered to his manager before the older man disappeared into the building. Every so often Shiloh's boss would pull him aside before work began to just simply check up on him. When he first got this job working on the weekends while he attended school, everyone could tell there was something slightly off about him. He flinched when approached, he hardly smiled and responded with the utmost respect he could muster. It always seemed as if there was just something extra hovering about his mind and he found comfort by being meticulous with his work, trying to do everything he could to drag out his time there. Even in the beginning his boss began to worry for the kid, finding some sort of relief when he appeared the next week. But he returned every day, half an hour early, and waited for his shift to begin each and every Friday evening.
What a surprise it was when Shiloh had told the manager to change his shift to full time, that he had graduated. The Manager never seemed to know what was going on at the time, but even he could see there was a gradual change in him since he had graduated. Smiles came much more frequently, words were still hard, but he did his best to make conversation with his coworkers. Heck, he had even made a friend with the old fella who he was often paired up with. Things were changing after nearly two years out of school, and Shiloh, himself, was not blind to it.
A small, tiny smile came as he entered the mall through the staff entrance. The place closed around 9:30PM tonight, and the time was just encroaching on 9:15. There wasn't much time left, but there was just enough where he could get a coffee before heading in to work the night time cleaning shift. Honestly, the boy didn't really like coffee if he was honest with himself. He knew someone who really, truly breathed the stuff as if it were air, and that person was beginning to grow on him more and more, so Shiloh still wanted to try it, so that he could atleast find himself a small appreciation for it.
He wasn't sure how likely it was to get a coffee at this time... Especially given how quiet it was, and the fact that there was no one quite behind the counter. Part of him truly just wanted to leave; completely avoid that confrontation with someone who would be pissed at him for coming in the last minute on his way into work... Yet somehow there was a smaller, sweeter voice within him urging him to try it, atleast just this once. So resigned, Shiloh softly called out into the empty cafe.
"U-Um... Excuse me...? Is it alright if I still made an order...?" Maybe someone would hear him.

A loud thump below the counter was followed by a groaned, "owww". Somewhere below the lip of the counter top someone unseen had been surprised by the presence overhead. There was the sound of something like metal on tile and a rusty-red head appeared as the lean man rocked back onto his heels. One hand was rubbing delicately at the back of his head as the other braced him against the ground, giving him balance while he slowly pushed himself to his feet. That had hurt like a son-of-a-b***h, but all Ellis did was muster up his best smile and - "Oh!" The forced smile brightened even though there was an obvious squint to his left eye. It helped the pain when he tried his best not to look at the low-hanging ceiling light just over Shiloh's right shoulder. Despite the pain he was obviously trying to ignore, he seemed absolutely thrilled to see him standing there - 9:16 or not. "I didn't realize that was you, Shy." Ellis brought his hand down from his head and leaned a bit more casually against the counter, letting his proper employee pose die in the face of familiarity. It had been so long since he'd seen Shiloh - honestly, much, much too long. Ellis had been working so hard since they'd graduated that he hadn't even had much time to think about anyone but Kavinsky and all of his school problems. With a sudden guilty heart, he tried not to let his smile waver and even managed a pleased laugh to couple with his surprise. "Did you want something? I'm sorry, I guess I'm supposed to ask that."

"A-are you alright?" Immediately after the thump rang out through the empty shop Shiloh made his way closer to the counter, leaning over it to try to see just exactly what had happened. He wasn't expecting to see a mess of red hair there groaning, or bright eyes that seemed all too familiar. Wait....
"E-ellis! I um... I d-didn't know you worked here! I-Is your eye okay...?" Even in his surprise his voice was soft, coming up as just a notch above a murmur. Just how long had it been since he had last seen his old friend? Their last encounter was just a small promise to see each other the next day, but it never happened... And it didn't happen the next day, nor the next, nor the next... Time and time moved on and Shiloh had finally pulled himself away from his phone, hoping that the other would message him or call him soon to finally see him again. But that never came.
And yet even now Shiloh held nothing but adoration for the other. From Ellis' warm smile to his laugh and the way his eyes seemed to light up at the sight of the quiet young man, Shiloh found himself pulled in by it all. How could he fight his own small smile that crept up on him and he adverted his eyes in the same shy fidget he had even back in high school. He was happy to see Ellis, there was no doubt about that!
There was no telling if Ellis truly felt the same, and all too quickly, that thought began to plague his mind. It came up quickly, egging the young man on with thoughts implying that Ellis didn't want to see him, that his once friend found this far too awkward to bare and really, truly just wanted him out. Naturally, Shiloh followed that thought process, gently pushing away from the counter to create a bit more space between them. He had to go, surely Ellis wanted him to go.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to catch you like that.. I-I... I'm sure you're closing up, huh...? That's okay, I don't need anything, I wouldn't want to keep you from going home... And work starts for me soon anyway..." There was no hiding what exactly Shiloh did for a living these days. His cover-alls hung loosely on his thin frame, and plastered on the front was his name and the name of the contracting company that did all the cleaning. for the mall. All that was missing was his cart that he lugged around from floor to floor. Luckily, that wasn't something he brought in himself.
"It was good to see you, but I-I should go..." His feet didn't want to leave just yet, not when Ellis was there, not when he was so close... But even he knew that Ellis couldn't read minds, and couldn't hear how much he hopped that Ellis would ask him to stay, just for a little while longer. The other red-head did care for him somewhere inside of him, right...?

Ellis felt his own anxiety flaring internally when he realized that Shiloh, true to nature, was spiraling out of control mentally. The bleeding heart in him ignited his over protective nature and before he could even stop himself, he had hopped up and slid over the counter in one quick, fluid motion until he could plant both feet on the floor next to Shiloh. Both of his arms reached out and caught him in a hug, squeezing him with all the happy surprise he felt at suddenly seeing him here. Sometimes people needed to know they were loved a little more than others and that was okay. Kavinsky always did, too. When he pulled away, he kept both hands on Shiloh's shoulders and stared into different colored blues, genuinely happy. The smile on his face was as honest and bright as Ellis ever was, even if he felt guilty suddenly not just for leaving Shiloh alone but also for forgetting that he had until this moment. He had to know he'd never meant to forget, right? Life was just so busy (and complicated). "Don't be silly, Shy, I wouldn't ever turn you away. It's really not as difficult a process as it looks, anyway, we aren't a fully functioning kitchen or anything." He shrugged and let his arms drop finally, so that he could lean into the swinging door built into the counter. It creaked a little on it's hinges as Ellis craned his head around to look at the clock, then announced plesantly: "It's only 9:17. That's thirteen whole minutes, so what'll it be?"

Everything happened so quickly Shiloh could barely grasp what had happen. It wasn't until he was wrapped up in a warm, familiar embrace did it register in his mind and his cheeks flared up in a dusty rose of a blush, hot and quickly spreading to his ears. The hug was tight and memories of safe feelings and gentle touches when he needed them most back in High School came flooding in. How could he not relax? Why the time Ellis held him at arms length, he was as red as a apple, with eyes wide and staring back into Ellis' with wonder. How could someone who he truly felt had forgotten him manage to put so much feeling into a simple touch, as if nothing ever went wrong?
"Ellis... T-thanks.." His own smile returned and he nodded quickly, easily allowing Ellis to leave his side again. So quick the hug was, and so soon did his old friend pull away that there wasn't any time to return the hug, only enough that he noticeably leaned into it before it was over. Happy little goose bumps began to show on his fore arms and he did his best to ignore them and the heat in his face while he tried to figure out what he wanted. Even with Ellis' assurance, he didn't want to take up too much time... He wouldn't deny that he dearly wished to speak with him longer. It was already 9:18 when he finished browsing the menu.
"Oh.... I just don't know... D-do you recommend anything? Something sweet...? You always did know me so well..."

Shiloh's stammering only made Ellis smile, so used to it as he had become over the years any time Shiloh wasn't expecting an extravagant gesture - which was always. Some things never changed. He let himself fade into the backdrop for just a moment, choosing silence while Shiloh read through their menu, and leaned his hip into the counter while he waited patiently for his friend's decision. Or indecision, as it happened. That, too, made Ellis laugh pleasantly. "I should've just picked something out for you anyway," his smile was bright and pleased even as he teased him, making his blue eyes crinkle at the edges. By the time he turned and headed behind the counter, his laughter had faded to the easy smile he always wore in Shiloh's company. Encouraging, bright, honest. He set about pulling out different ingredients - coffee, syrups, sugars. In his mind he was considering how much caffeine Shiloh might need for an overnight shift - even if he got decent sleep, Ellis knew that night hours still seemed to drag on more slowly, like the soul didn't perceive things properly without the guidance of sunlight. By the time he had gathered everything together and set it out along the counter, it was 9:20. "How long have you been working here? I'm surprised I haven't seen you but, I guess, I usually also work mornings here. Not always, but usually." Depending on his bar schedule and how many of his co-workers were calling out at each establishment. This time of year, with the flu rampant and colds sprouting up like weeds, he was often working 70 hour weeks. Good for the money, bad for friendships and stress levels. Shiloh was a bright spot in his week that he wouldn't believe even if Ellis tried to explain it, so he didn't. While he made his small talk, Ellis was busy putting all of his skill into making a drink for Shiloh - but he made sure to peak up every few seconds to make eye contact. You're not bothering me, I'm glad you're here, those bright eyes said.

There were very few things in this world that could could make Shiloh's heart race in his chest. At the top of the list surely would have been Ellis' smile. He had a smile that easily pushed away any sadness that gripped his heart and forced a smile onto Shiloh's own freckled face. And it didn't feel laced with pity as so many smiles from other people seemed to be. It was genuine and something that was just for him. Something so wonderful and gentle that even now it hadn't changed.
The little bits of eye contact that he kept getting from Ellis as he worked as well as the little smile that lingered on for him did nothing to help the heat on his cheeks, but he didn't mind. The attention and focus on him did help to ease his nervousness, relaxing him to the point where his stammering all but ceased.
"I um... I've been working here for four years... Always nights... But I normally just go straight into work. I just thought that... I um... I would try some coffee tonight. I made a friend at the other place I work, and he really likes coffee, but it's super bitter and he takes it black. I thought maybe I could see if he wanted to go out and get coffee one of these days but I don't really like coffee.... S-so maybe I could find something I like... How lucky I am that you are here then... I'm sure you'll find something perfect for me." When he began to speak of the Judge, he couldn't help but shyly look down, feeling shier mentioning it, but still proud. Ellis knew how hard it was for him to make friends so maybe he'd be proud too.
"I-I'm sorry for disappearing though... Had I known you were so close, I would have come in to say hello. I really... Really did miss you, you know...? But I didn't want to bother you, since you've been so busy... I'm so glad I could see you again, even if it was an accident." Shiloh was the same, working whenever he could, feeling awkward when he couldn't say he was contributing to something, but he was still at his 40 hours a week. It was enough to support him, barely, but he wasn't greedy, nor had anyone to support, so he was alright without working so hard... It wasn't as if he was working towards anything specific anyway. The clocked ticked away another minute, marking it 9:21.

As Ellis busied himself at different types of machines behind the counter, he listened to the half-mumbled story of Shiloh's friend with pride. He was, in fact, very happy for the other redhead - it wasn't often that he got close enough to anyone to find out how they drank their coffee. It made him toss an amused smile up at him as he poured all of his hard work into a cup already decorated for Valentine's Day. "I'm really glad that you have someone to talk to, Shy, that's great. Don't apologize to me, though." Ellis was shaking his head in unison to a can of whipped cream. "I know I'm the forgetful one. It's all my fault, okay?" It was weird, the difference in the self-loathing Shiloh and Kavinsky carried on their shoulders. Shiloh was the little flame that needed to be coaxed to life and Kavinsky was the angry, raging forest fire. Shiloh returned smiles and shied at his compliments, making him feel like he was actually helping someone for once. He'd nearly forgotten what that was like. "Buuuuuut," he drew the word out as he finally capped the drink and put a topper on it. In no time he had a sharpie in his hand and was making his way back around the counter so he could hand it to Shiloh. Below his name was a phone number, printed carefully. "I finally got a cell phone, so no more missing out on each other, okay? I missed you too." Ellis smiled again - then remembered the drink in his hand. When his bright eyes looked over Shiloh's shoulder, it said 9:24. That was a huge chunk of time but he had wanted to make sure it was just right. If the difference between Shiloh making a close friend and being too afraid to talk to him was confidently having a drink to order, he was going to make it perfect. "Caramel Macchiato, it's sweet and has a spot of espresso - good for a night shift. If your barista makes it right, it won't be bitter. It's probably hot though."

Shiloh felt almost a little silly as he watched Ellis work quickly and quietly behind the counter as he made the drink. He hadn't realized just how intently he had been watching, curious to see how such fancy drinks were made and how deftly his hands moved about. It was very entrancing to watch, to the point that he gave a slight start again when he was addressed again.
"He is nice... Kinda cold, but nice... But I only ever get to see him at night, when we work; our paths wouldn't ever cross otherwise." As wonderful as the judge was, to Shiloh atleast, they really, truly wouldn't cross paths in the daylight. Not when he was merely a janitor and the judge was.. Well, you know.
"Don't you say that, Ellis! I've known you for a long time and I know when things are accidents! S-so I'm just as much to blame for not being... For not having... " Gah, even now he found himself having trouble putting his words together, and only turned his eyes downwards... Until he was offered the cup.
No words could quite describe the effect something as simple as receiving Ellis phone number had on Shiloh. Already bright red cheeks somehow turned brighter, and he simply stared at it for a moment, stammering and slightly panicking over it. What had he done to deserve such a sweet and wonderful and amazing action from Ellis? What sweet blessed goddess was out there and took pity on Shiloh's simple and shy soul to have one of the people he held closest to his heart extend a hand to him like so? Over and over again he went over this in his mind, a number of different emotions coming over him at once until he managed to wrangle himself in JUST enough to take the coffee from Ellis' hand, only to quickly set it back down, realizing just how badly he was shaking.
"Y-y-you didn't have to! I-i'm not... W-what if..... I just.. I mean, I don't..." He struggled for a moment, completely unsure of how to handle all of this delight that came over him, until he managed to squeak out a few more words, eyes turned down again and hands fumbling about in his pockets.
"T-thank you!! I-it means alot! It really does, because I've always n-needed you and missed you and you were always there and I would love to see you again because life just isn't the same without you there, a-and I don't need protecting anymore s-so maybe I'll be actually fun to be around sometimes and if you did manage to make time for me o-or something I would be there in a flash, you know that you do, I'm sure! I-i'll text you my address in a bit a-and we can hang out and I dunno, I'm sorry, I'm rambling, I'm so sorry but I just... I... Thank you!"
After that, he fell silent, and the clocked ticked to 9:26 before he managed to pull out his wallet and pull out a few crumpled dollars, face and ears hot and hands still shaking ever so slightly. He pushed the bills towards Ellis without another word. He knew if his mouth opened, he'd find himself panicking and gushing and wanting to stay longer and longer, and he'd all but flog his own self for getting to work late, even though they didn't -technically- have a set time to clock in.

Despite the way that Shiloh began to immediately stammer and them immediately stammer through apologizing for stammering, Ellis found himself smiling in the most honest, happy moment of his night. He had entirely forgotten how easy it was to see the pure moments of joy in Shiloh’s face, from his over-excitement right down to the blush in his cheeks. It made Ellis realize how unrestrainedly adorable he was and, for once, his own cheeks tinged with their own bit of rouge. “You don’t have to apologize about anything, Shy, let’s just agree not to forget each other again. Okay?” A hand reached out and squeezed his old friend’s shoulder lightly as he began fishing for bills and, for a moment, he almost considered refusing them - except that he knew it would have made Shiloh even fussier and quite possibly might create some form of guilt for him. So, instead, he just took them and rounded the counter to the register so he could ring him up properly. It took only a few breaths for him to punch in the order and, in no time, the drawer slid open with a ‘ching’. Ellis concentrated on fitting the bills in their slot and pulled free a few coins with an ease from practice. He rounded the counter again with the shiny silver coins held up for the other boy to take, never letting his smile falter. “Just don’t forget to text me your number. I’m off tomorrow night and again on Thursday.” The clock over the door read 9:28 by the time he had finished ringing him up, each minute ticking by more quickly than the last. Ellis knew that Shiloh must be on his way into work and, too, he knew that he was obligated to lock the door by 9:30. He wasn’t overly worried that guests were going to wander in, though he could hear some rowdy teenagers heading for the exit. Very few people wanted coffee so late in the night. Few people, apart from Shiloh. “And let me know how it goes with your friend too, okay?”

As panicked and happy he was the hand on his shoulder calmed him quickly, just as it had so many times before. He was thrilled and found himself truly longing not to leave.
"I won't forget, I won't ever forget, I promise... A-and I'll try go get some time off too..." he said softly, reaching out for the coins, but resting his hand there against Ellis' briefly, squeezing it and just wishing so badly that he didn't have to let go. But even he could hear the clock strike 9:29 and though it was only right around the corner, it was best that he get going... With a heavy heart, he let go, and stuck the change into the pocket of his jumpsuit.
"It was truly a wonderful thing to see you again, Ellis... And I will, I'll text you all the details, promise." Finally pulling away and heading to the door, Shiloh took a moment to think back on tonight and how incredibly lucky he was to have come in when he did.
"I will see you soon, I swear.. I won't fade away again." In saying that, he gave a small wave and a slight nod, beaming all the while, and then went out of the door, rounding the corner and going into his own workplace. It would be several hours before he'd be able to go on break and pull out his phone, but until then he would slowly enjoy the coffee in his hands, treasuring each ship that was made for him and only him. What a wonderful night it was.

Ellis walked quietly behind Shiloh as he began to see himself to the door, listening with that same, patient, pleased smile that he had been wearing since the moment he realized his old friend was standing in front of his check-out counter. "I know you won't, Shy. I swear I won't either." His words were the last spoken between them as Shiloh finally opened the door and slipped away, heading to begin his shift as Ellis came to the close of his own. The bright, baby blues followed the redhead's shrinking form as he rounded the corner and disappeared down the side of the cafe, finally slipping out of sight of the large, open windows. The clock overhead ticked finally to 9:30 and Ellis reached up to twist the lock on the door, bolting it closed and stopping anyone else from entering. Shiloh had not only helped the last fifteen minutes of his shift fly by but, too, he had given Ellis something to smile about. Something easy and simple, like making an old friend a good coffee. As he turned his back on the door and headed toward the small working area behind the counter, he couldn't mentally help ticking off all the little things that had led to the pair of them crossing paths again - Prissy had been generous enough to give up a shift and some friend of Shiloh's had made him curious enough to enter a coffee shop in the first place. It seemed an awfully odd coincidence, but he wasn't going to question it. The universe had been giving him a lot of awfully odd coincidences, lately. Ellis began humming to himself, chipper despite the hour's worth of work he still faced before he could head home, and set about prepping the cafe for the crew that would be in come morning.
