It was only a couple weeks into the semester, and already Cassie was about ready to scream and rip her hair out at how much reading she had to do. She glared at the mass of papers she'd just printed out, sitting atop her pile of books she'd also had to grab to start doing some of the required readings for her various classes.
Social sciences often required a lot of contextual sources, especially in the upper classes that delved into theory. So in that sense, it didn't shock her that she had so much on her plate already piling up... But it didn't mean she wouldn't gripe about it and groan over it.
Swathed in a heavy winter coat, her cream wool knit sweater dress consumed her, hanging to her mid-thighs with thick dark leggings decorated with constellation patterns covering her until tall knee-high boots took over to protect her from the n** of the winter day. A silver belt cinched her waist, star charms clinking like bells with her movements and matching the earrings she wore. Her satchel was slung over her shoulders, crossing her chest, and it bulged with the papers and books inside of it, with her hair done up in a messy bun with a pen sticking out of the top of her mass of colored curls.
Perched atop the pile of books and papers she carried an extra large white mocha coffee purchased from the cafe in the library, precarious in its position and her constant nervous glances towards it confirmed she was totally aware of the impending doom.
But her problem was, as she wandered through the library, was finding a place to sit. Usually, she opted for a lone table or desk, and squirreled herself away to work in peace. But that was not apparently going to be an option today. She finally spotted a large table near some of the wide windows on one of the upper floors of the library, and she approached tentatively, offering a sheepish smile to the man already there. "Um, hey sorry, but do you mind if I sit here?" She tried to motion to some of the empty chairs at the other end of his table, but the coffee cup began to wobble and she made a small noise of terror as she quickly tried to still her stuff.

Alec was no stranger, himself, to teetering towers of research material - sometimes for class, sometimes for pleasure. Currently it was upper-level economics driving him mad, and he sat in the library surrounded by textbooks and notes, jacket slung over the back of his chair and massive travel mug of coffee half-finished. He probably looked like a mess - he honestly wasn't sure when he'd last slept. Between classes and being Valjean, it was all very....time-consuming. Sleep could wait.
And there in front of him was an absolute vision of loveliness, looking a little scattered herself, and as soon as he noticed the teetering coffee he stood to help her right it, and the stack of books, because that was what you did, and he gave her a smile.
"Of course," he said, voice a rolling Scottish brogue, "you're welcome to sit here. Not sure that stack would make it much further, anyway, and it would be cruel to make you try."

Oh he. He was tall. It took her a moment to notice that--first, her main priority was the leaning tower of academic destruction. Which he was very, very kind in helping her right, stabilizing the mass. Enough that she sent him a tired, but very relieved and grateful smile. "Thank you, holy crap... that could have been bad."
Then he spoke, and Cassie was pretty sure that for a small moment her mouth hung open a little in dumbstruck awe. Or maybe it didn't. But she sure felt like she was staring at him like an idiot because he had a Scottish accent.
Still, she nodded and winced at his words, carefully lowering the stack--and coffee--to the table in a clear section that would still give him plenty of room. "No kidding. I'm lucky it even got this far, really. Thank you for the save." She took hold of the coffee cup that had been considering mutiny and took a few sips, eyes closing briefly in relief at the surge of sweetness and incoming caffeine. Opening them once more, she couldn't help but take a peek at the titles of the books in his area, and very obviously winced. "I do not envy your work right now. Hope I didn't throw off your focus, I'm sorry." Math was not her friend, and she felt the urge to make the sign of the cross against the pile.

"Luckily, it wasn't," Alec said, a light laugh in his voice. "I'm glad I could help."
He remained standing until she had the whole pile on the table and he could be reasonably certain she wouldn't need any more help, and then he returned to his seat, prepared to dive back in - even if he'd much rather entertain the lovely lady.
"Well, you've obviously got some sort of skill to keep it all together," he said, "but when you start getting ready to putt hings back, let me help you?" He hoped i didn't come across as condescending - just a genuinely meant offer of aid.
He glanced down at the book, and then laughed. It wasn't as if he was fond of all of this, butt here was worse, really. Worse maths, even.
"Ah, it's numbers, but it's a little easier since it's practical," he said. "Lots of parts of history only make sense if you can follow the money trail."
