Adopting a child was no joke. Col knew that better than most, but he hadn't been able to stop thinking about it even so, despite his simultaneous dread and certainty that it would be the worst mistake of his life. After accidentally finding a half sibling he hadn't known he'd been missing and graduating with a degree in architecture all in the past three months, taking on parenthood felt like the next logical step in the all too frightening business of being a grownup that he had fallen into. Kia seemed to think it was the worst idea he'd had since they'd met, and she wasn't afraid to tell him so.
"You do know it's in poor taste to give a child back if you don't like it?"
"I wouldn't ever give them back," he said, pulling a face. "How could you even assume something like that?" He was many things, but a totally gross child abandoner wasn't one of them.
Still, no matter how many times he tried to reassure her, Kia wouldn't relent in time for an adoption during the winter solstice. Instead, she arranged to meet in the middle, asking her numerology professor if Col could watch his son for a short time tonight, just to see how it was done. Temporary parenting.
He flicked his hair out of his eyes as the doorbell rang, and he took a deep breath before answering it with a steady hand. He wasn't about to be all nervous around some kid.
